— DrewM Well, this just got (even more) interesting.
It looks like thereÂ’s a real possibility of a major upset in the Delaware Senate primary on Tuesday night, with insurgent conservative Christine OÂ’Donnell leading longtime Congressman and Governor Mike Castle 47-44. That 3 point lead is well within the pollÂ’s margin of error. If Castle is indeed defeated Tuesday night it will be yet another sign that conservatives have a strangle hold on the Republican Party and moderates may or may not be welcome anymore. Castle has an overwhelming 69-21 lead with moderate voters but they only make up 33% of the likely primary electorate. OÂ’Donnell has a 62-31 lead with conservatives thatÂ’s more than enough to propel her to the overall lead.
ItÂ’s clear that CastleÂ’s popularity has taken a sharp turn in the wrong direction over the last month. An August PPP poll found his favorability with Delaware Republicans at a 60/25 spread. Now his favorables within the party are negative at 43/47. ThatÂ’s largely a product of 55% of voters in his party saying they think heÂ’s too liberal compared to 37% who think heÂ’s about right.
...General election Senate numbers we'll release later this week make it clear the biggest beneficiary of this primary becoming so unexpectedly hotly contested is Chris Coons. He would start out with a large advantage over O'Donnell in a general election match up, and is polling closer to Castle than he was when PPP polled Delaware last month.
Not sure what's left to say that hasn't already been said at this point (though that doesn't mean someone won't have something else to say about it tomorrow).
On the upside...it'll all be over one way or another on Tuesday.
Okay, one new thought...RCP has one poll on the House race in Delaware (from PPP in early September) shows the Democrat leading the two possible GOP candidates by 16 and 18 points.
Why does anyone think a state that is going to elect a Democrat to the House this year really wants to send a hardcore conservative about whom there are a lot questions to the Senate?
Remember, Delaware has one house seat, so it's the same electorate. Do you really think they are going to split their ticket for a Democrat and O'Donnell? This is probably one of 3 or 4 Democratic pickups in the House this year but on the other hand they are just dying to send a Palin/DeMint backed candidate to the Senate?
How does that make any sense?
*I corrected the headline. Technically it is a tie since it's within the margin of error but O'Donnell is leading.

If Delaware elects Mr. Coons, their Senator will vote for the Democratic Party agenda every time except a few minor local issues, because he's a Democrat.
If Delaware elects Mr. Castle, their Senator will vote for the Democratic Party agenda every time except for a few minor local issues, because it's bipartisan and we all have to get along.
I'm not seeing a huge advantage here. Is it a scoreboard thing? More "R"s than "D"s makes you go rah-rah and sing drunken team-spirit songs?

Paul has a hefty lead in KY, though he's batshit insane. He is still better than a Democrat, I support him, and KY is red. Angle is well-known in NV, a swing state, and I'm not convinced Tarkanian or Lowden would have fared better against Reid, a powerful incumbent with the full weight of a well-organized state and national apparatus behind him. DE is blue, though. Someone with a thin resume and Tea Party talking points stands no chance. Especially when that person is crazier than Ron and Rand Paul put together.

In a year where everything is setting up for the big wave, you take a chance here and there. Nothing ventured nothing gained. If O'Donnell can't win this year, then you can always run another Castle in 2016. Where else have the R's made a calculated gamble that could really turn the tide?

I went over to another website where Ace is mentioned quite a bit (It rhymes with BotFair), and kept seeing the same arguments about this race from people. And it makes me mad. Here's why:
We don't need or want 51 seats.
Now, why is this? Because if we get 51 seats, or more, Obama's got an excuse to use in 2012 for all the problems. It'll be like 1996 all over again. Not to mention that we still have 4 RINO yahoos that are still in the Senate right now: Graham, Collins, Snowe, Voinovich. So we need to get to 55 in order to really get the balance we are looking for.
Now that that's out of the way, let me explain my frustration with people tearing each other up about this DE Senate race: It's futile. It's not necessary. We have potential wins in places we never thought of and everyone just seems to think that this race is "it.". It isn't. We can let Delaware go. I mean, we SHOULD be spending more of our resources in places like Washington State, West Virginia, or even Oregon. West Virginia is our most likely chance to make a major earth-shattering pickup, and trading DE for WV is a good trade, IMHO.
So all of the people who are getting really nasty in their words about this Delaware race really need to focus their attention on another race. It'll be much more helpful that way.
For note, I'd rather lose DE for we can win WV or OR. Like Gabriel Iglesias: "Why do I drink Diet Soda? So I can eat regular cake."

That isn't margin of control. Because Biden splits ties, a 50-50 Senate would still give the Dems the majority, and the chairmanships that come with it and are the real key to power in the Senate. 51 is the first number that matters: 60 is the next, where we can break filibusters, and 67 would be where we could override a veto.

This is a revolutionary election cycle - Ruling Class vs. Taxpayers. The Right is fed up with the status quo and the voters will have their say. If Mike Castle is another Arlen Specter than we might have the ability to stop the next Wardlaw or Reinhardt and you can sure as hell bet that Obama will be sending those folks up.
If Mike Castle is the next Senator versus a Chris Coons (because O'Donnell is far far more likely to lose) we'll have somebody who is much more likely to oppose partial birth abortion procedures and other pro choice positions.
If Castle wins, even though he might not check all government excesses in spending, at least he'll believe that there are limits like when he opposed the additional '09 800+ billion additional 'stimulus'.
If Castle wins and becomes a senator over Coons we'll have another person willing to go after GSE's, the ACORN's and Kevin Johnson's of the world.
If Castle wins you'll have another senator who supports a border fence and enforcement as a stand alone where Coons will want the whole 9 yards on amnesty otherwise.
If Castle wins you'll be guaranteed a friend on nuclear energy.
If Castle wins you'll have a guy who supports free trade and isn't automatically beholden to unions.
If Castle wins you'll have a senator who will vote for trial lawyer fee caps.
If Castle win you'll be guaranteed another friend of the military.
If Castle wins you'll have another vote for making the Bush tax cuts permanent and you'll have another member of the Congressional Flat Tax Caucus in the senate.
Mike Castle might be a centrist, but you are underestimating how much better a centrist is than the hardcore Joe Biden clone we're likely to get if O'Donnell wins. Don't let hysteria blind you from pragmatism.

Where is Castle getting some advice from ? Good ole Murky in AK.
Where did Castle spend his day today campaigning? Well, there weren't many Republicans there.
Voters here greeted Castle like an old friend, with most calling him by his first name and offering him encouragement ahead of Tuesday, but it was tough to find Republicans in the Arts Festival crowd.
I don't have a dog in this hunt other than how it affects the country. If I did, I would still vote my principals. And Castle doesn't have any.

If Castle win he doesn't just become a +1 for '10 but also for '12 and '14. By those cycles we will have definite chances at 51 senators. I'd rather have a 75% chance of having a squishy repub for those year than a 10% chance of having a strong conservative one, especially from a state where even getting a repub senator is pretty much icing.

The difference in your case is that your squishy senator is from a state which is much more favorable to republicans. We don't need a moderate to have a legitimate chance at winning from there. Delware is a completely different ball game. It is deep blue. That needs to be the central part of any of the political calculus here.

OK, flip that around. If Castle is the nominee, the Dems throw in the towel in Delaware and use their resources in other races, whereas if O'Donnell is the candidate the Dems are drawn into the race and are weaker elsewhere.
Same difference -- overall.

Well then fuck-tard, let the "moderate" be a Democrat instead of a RINO who will just drag the Republican name down even further.
Oh wait- the difference between a "Moderate" and a Democrat is what again?
You reason like a 12 year old, you ignorant vulgarian. After our push for Miller over Murkowski around here, you think you can question our conservatism?
I already know what kind of thinker you are, and I could script your posts from here on out. Whenever someone makes a specific point, say, about flakery, you'll move like Jell-O. Because you aren't arguing from a rational standpoint. That willingness to pull out all the rhetorical stops shows your basic dishonesty.
Take another look at what you wrote, and try to think of how it makes any sense whatsoever: Let Castle be a Democrat, since RINOs drag down the whole party. Well, brilliant.

I'm not looking for quantity, I'm looking to salvage the good will of people around here by dropping a race that is easily causing a lot more damage than needed. Frankly, if we "need" to win this Castle race, and we forsake a lot of the development that the GOP and Tea Party have done in the last 19 months, then we have our priorities backwards.
It's not worth killing momentum and America for one, lousy, stupid Senate seat in a state of very little consequence. We get a win in WV and a loss in DE, and it becomes a wash. I'd rather have that happen, than a drag-out fight that kills the momentum that the American people have developed since the Santelli statement.

It's like we have to spell everythign out for you morons. It's an easy compared to the circumstances we'd typically expect from a place like Delaware. The entire discussion has been predicated on the fact that while O'Donnell might be a better conservative she has just about no chance at the seat where Castle has consistently sported huge leads. You're literally poo poo'ing the good for the perfect. This is Glenn Beck land. This is america and unfortunately almost half of the country are stupid enough or dependent enough on the dems to vote for liberals. We run candidates in America, not in fox news. That's why we take the Mike Castles when we can get them.
And what momentum killing? Was it killing momentum a month ago when O'Donnell was just another nobody tryign to get rich off of bullshit gender lawsuits? When democrats were wetting their pants, we were creeping up in WV and we had at least 3-4 seat guaranteed to flip to us? Will you be happier when we lose that extra seat now and you can say, 'well FUCK, I don't care about worker's not being squashed by unions, those extra wackjob judges who got confirmed or bullshit lame duck legislation because my nipples remain extra hard when Demint talks about the 30 chosen senators'.

Regarding #2, Castle is in the fight of his life in the republican primary. Despite probably being more centrist than the general republican voter pool in that state. In the general election he leads because he's a popular local politcians who people across the state including independents know to be somebody who they think could represent delaware well. O'Donnell is none of htat. She will get none fo the democrats, will lose some pissed off Castle supporters (with her mature gay references, paranoia, etc) and will get the Angle treatment from teh media which will guarantee the loss of independents.

You seem to think I'm on O'Donnell's side on this issue. I'm not. I think she's a complete nutcase. But, I also see that Castle is a complete and utter lost cause, and that we shouldn't bother with DE when we have other races we can commit to and not have the divisions that we're having.
I'll be very honest with you, I don't want us to take the Senate. Because that will give Obama a perfect foil to use against the Conservative/Republican candidate in 2012. We're looking at a potential 1996 all over again, and I'd rather try not to repeat history like that when I could have a 1980-style victory.

Palin does appear to be a solid conservative. But McCain as a rightwinger? Maybe 20 years ago...

Over the last two years the Democratic majority is both houses was so large that they could, and did, ram anything through. The only thing delaying them was the threat of a filibuster in the Senate and that was a weak threat because of the RINOs ready to walk across the aisle if you blew on them hard.
Now that the Republicans should have the House with a solid majority, and the Senate should hover around a 50/50 split, the filibuster is safe. The next two years shouldn't be like the last two.

Way to demonstrate your ignorance. Sure, Senate Judiciary's rules require the vote of at least one member of the minority to report a nomination to the floor. But a Senate committee chairman has absolute power over their committee because they alone control the committee's agenda. I work in a convenience store. Every day I meet hundreds of people, from Fortune 500 retired executives, professors, students, working people, contractors, owner-operators, housewives, to drug addicts, drunks, you name it. I've listened to folks who've never given a shit about politics before repeat quotations from the Constitution ; auto mechanics who took their kids up to the big Tea Party rally in DC. The anti-incumbent fervor in NC is something to behold and now it's transforming itself into an anti-Dem movement (Burr's numbers are moving up).
I'm not surprised that Castle is feeling the heat. Every thinking American knows this country is at a crossroads, and that every vote counts and they are going to vote for people who are as angry at Washington as they are. To them, Castle and the other squishes are part of the problem, not the solution.

Why on earth do you think O'Donnell is a conservative? What the hell do we even know about her?
She's a career politician.
She filed a completely bullshit gender discrimination lawsuit for 7 million fucking dollars. Against a conservative group, no less. She's tried to leech money from our own side.
She's a compulsive liar, even lying about things that make no fucking sense to lie about.
She claimed 5,800 dollars of annual income, which is impossible. That means she's a tax cheat.
She's living off of her campaign funds. He campaign is paying for her fucking house. Oh, but she doesn't really live there. Here home is somewhere else, which she won't disclose. Either she lives somewhere that would ruin her campaign (out of state) or she is living in her campaign funded house. So what is she, a parasite or a cheater?
She thinks "they" are out to get her.
Now, please, explain to me which of those things are hallmarks of a conservative. What? None of them are? Those are all the things that the hyper liberal political leeches do that we constantly rail about?
So. Why. The. Fuck. Do. You. Think. She. Is. A. Conservative.
Seriously, why? Because she says so? Yeah, because politicians always tell the truth. Especially liberal ones. Does she have any sort of voting record that would prove it? No, because she's been pathetically crushed in every single election.
There's two option. You can pick between electing an honest, sane, RINO who's almost a guaranteed win. Or you can pick a fucking lying nutjob, who has no chance in hell of winning, because she feeds you the sad fantasy that she's a "true conservative". She doesn't live like one. Why would she vote like one?

Somebody posted McCain got 38% of Delaware.
So, a moderate Republican only gets 38%.
Wouldn't it be better to run a conservative and give folks a choice?
It baffles me when alleged conservatives tout Castle as a possiblity to win DE.
Again, to what end? Do you not have conviction of your values? Are you not willing to fight for them?
What really pissed off conservatives in this race is when online "conservatives" set about trashing O'Donnell. Not touting Castle, but saying O'Donnell was sooooo bad we had to take Castle. They sounded like DEMOCRATS when they described conservatives. We don't need a fifth column in the conservative movement.
And they stated Castle wasn't so bad. Not a major RINO, but RINO light. Best that we could get in DE. So, we might as well just throw our principles out the window and accept the inevitable--Mike Castle.
I would rather fight for O'Donnell than settle for Castle. Elections are also for educating voters. In '64 Goldwater lost, but we later got Reagan. And Reagan won DE.
I am tired of the pissant losers who don't have the intelligence or stomach to argue for conservative leadership. If Castle wins the primary, then fine. Back Castle. But until that bitter day, I would rather fight for O'Donnell.

Isn't it far more likely that if the Republicans run the table and get a 51 seat majority in the Senate, Castle flips or goes "statesmanlike" independent and votes for the Dems to organize the Senate to preserve the "balance of power" or some such?
There have been rumors...but wouldn't Castle have flipped back in 2006/8 if were the sort? No, he wouldn't have been quite a important, but in 2006 the Dem's majority in the House was smaller, and after 2008 it looked like the Reps were done in blue states...

Only a RINO would actually believe that Rasmussen is a legit pollster.

On Wednesday the First Couple will don black tie for the annual Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gala, one of the more entertaining political galas of the Washington fall season. A number of entertainers are being honored with awards, including Eva Longoria Parker, five-time Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval, and musician Sheila E. Also participating in the festivities will be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Hopefully the Obamas get some rest Thursday or Friday, because they will be back in formalwear on Saturday night for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's (CBCF) annual Phoenix Awards dinner.

There is an unfortunate tendency among some on the right to adopt the view that no one is a *real* conservative except for them and a handful of their friends or followers. This sort of divisive, exclusionary attitude is a sure ticket to perpetual minority status, and should be avoided by all conservatives.

It's going to be Coons or Castle.
pick one.
this isn't a debate, its going to happen. The sooner you resign yourselves to that fact, the easier it will be.
Forget ideology of Castle and O'Donnell just for one second. Just look at them as candidates. She has no appeal outside of the conservative base. She isn't a very good speaker, doesn't have a very good track record, hasn't been able to stand up to much criticism from right leaning outlets, and seems to have trouble making financial disclosures, house payments, college payments, etc.
She isn't worth it. She is a bad candidate. If she wins, she will lose.
Castle on the other hand has a track record everyone in the state is familiar with. He has run for and won almost every electable position in the state. He is popular with the people of Delaware. Politics aside, he is a good candidate.
He might be an Olypia Snowe, but he will be far better than a Joe Biden, whose seat is being filled by this election.
why can't we take this gift and be happy with it?
The left leaning democrats put up with the blue dogs, and Nelson in the Senate, and look what they got. Healthcare, two Left wing supreme court justices, and all the free money they could steal.
Maybe we should put up with a senator from Delaware who occasionally votes with us on the big issues of the day.
good night.

"On the upside...it'll all be over one way or another on Tuesday"
Good to know you think conservatives have a winning message.
Making the government (much) smaller is my goal. A Republican majority is the way to do that. However a Republican majority doing the liberals' bidding and debating their arguments instead of our own is not going to cut it any longer. If they can't a third party will form.
How do we ever win (I mean actually make government smaller - that's my goal not Republicans in power) if we don't press our issues. What are your issues? Do you want smaller government? Is Castle the way to get there?
If smaller government is not your goal why do you present yourselves as though it is?

Conservatives have much work to do. Education, the press, popular culture and institutional government are all in liberals hands and have been for a very long time. They got there because they were unfailing in prclaming and standing by their sole principle of progressivism. Race, feminism etc were and are all just means to an end.
How do you ever expect anybody to take our (your?) principles seriously if you are willing to abandon them for an empty victory? Believe me they don't. Nelson voted for Obamacare, and the Dems didn't need his votes for the Court and let him take a gimme for his reelection because, ta dah, a herd of Rinos trampled over to their side to kill any danger of filibuster.
Kagen
Today's yes votes included Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the lone Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee to support Kagan when the panel recommended the nomination to the full Senate on a 13-6 vote. Other GOP yes votes came from Richard Lugar of Indiana, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, and Judd Gregg of New Hampshire.
Sotomayor
Nine GOP senators voted for her confirmation...Among them were four Republican senators who will be retiring at the end of 2010, including Sens. Kit Bond of Missouri, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, Mel Martinez of Florida and George Voinovich of Ohio. Other GOP senators who cast an "aye" vote were Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

Palin=Monty.
It took us decades to get into the hole we're in now. We're not going to get out of it in one election. There will be a time to purge the Republican party of RINO's. After we've purged the Democratic party of progressives.
But we have to do this in the right order. If we get rid of the middle of the Republican party we weaken ourselves while the Democrats keep their strength. We need to teach the Democrats that listening to progressives is a sure-fire way to lose elections. They need to realize that the way back into political power is to convince the RINOs to become Democrats. When someone like Castle is running as a Democrat in Delaware we'll know we've won.

One more time... The odds of taking the Senate this time are remote at best. What we really need to concentrate on is the House. That is where the purse strings are controlled. Repealing of health care probably won't happen this time because Obama will veto it. The house, on the other hand, can cut the funding. That is where, at this time, we should be concentrating.

I am thinking about long term principles. How do you ever expect anybody to take them seriously if you don't?
I don't think you are very serious about them and I'm a conservative. Liberals see you are very willing to negotiate them.
Castle will but only in their direction. Not ours. Theirs is a position of strength. They control everything and they will smell weakness. How to you ever expect to win? By that I mean make government smaller not committee chairmanships. That is what you want right?

I love self-justification.
The odds of taking the Senate this time are excellent at best, but they get significantly worse if Delaware decides to nominate Crazy Lady into a race that was supposed to be a slam-dunk pickup with a real candidate.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's O'Donnell's supporters who are loudly proclaiming they'd rather see a Democrat win the seat than Castle, and it's O'Donnell herself who won't rule out running third-party if she loses the primary.
It's hilarious. You O'Donnell shitheads love to whine about RINOs, when in fact you are the biggest RINOs of all. You're worse than useless to us.
As I said the other day: A vote for Castle is a vote for a democrat.

Dude, this isn't about bravery. And you've got the short-view on principles. I'd say the real principled person would vote for the candidate that is more likely to assist in getting actual legislation passed. Since your principles are embodied in the laws that get passed. Maybe not all of it, btw, but some of it.
There is no greek chorus to sing your praises for a tragic defeat. "He lost in November, but he stood his ground in September." But if there was, it would sing, "He had the wisdom to accept half a cup in September, and now in November he's going to get down some great fuckin' leglislation shoved through fuckin' Congress." Greek choruses sing like that, right?

Here is an exact quote from Christine O'Donnell.
"They’re following me. They follow me home at night. I make sure that I come back to the townhouse and then we have our team come out and check all the bushes and check all the cars to make sure that—they follow me.
"That’s what’s disgusting, as you can see from the YouTube videos. They knock on the door at all hours of the night. They’re hiding in the bushes when I’m at candidate forums. In 2008 they broke into my home. They vandalized my home. They wrote nasty notes on my front door, on my front porch. They jeopardized my safety. They did the same thing to our campaign office. They broke into our campaign office. They vandalized our campaign office. They stole files. My campaign signs that had my picture—they put a spear in my mouth poked out my eyes, and cut out the part of my heart, and wrote nasty names all over those campaign signs.
"I would be a fool to be pressured into disclosing where I live, when I know that the stakes are even higher this time. What makes me think they wont do the same distasteful things they did in 2008 when the stakes are even higher, when we’re even more viable. I mean come on, John, you’re a class act. You don’t want to—you know that this is a security issue. You know what they’re capable of."

Go eat a dick. I've specifically mentioned multiple times in posts above that I'd vote and support whoever the republican candidate is. It's the tea partiers and holier than thous who always threaten the same bullshit democrats do with the equivalent of moving to canada.
I'll be holding my nose and donating to Angle because Reid is an abortion of a politician and Nevada is crucial. Meanwhile you'll probably try to send message after message that it's your way or the highway.
And to the person saying we'll having more seats to win in the next cycle - that's exactly why Delaware is so important. Look at the Democrats. In 2006 they got moderate or conservative dems elected in places like Montana, Virginia and reelected Nelson in Nebraska. They accepted that they wouldn't get total liberals there because they realized long term it would be beneficial to have at least nominal allies from blue state. Then when they had enough liberals in 2008, they had a supermajority which was criticial on a number of issues where they were (unfortunately) able to pass during Obama's term. That is an intelligent roadmap. Getting 30 really strong conservatives in the Senate but remaining a persistent minority might sound noble, but its a losing strategy every time.

Nah. If Castle is defeated Tuesday night, that means a fellow with 100% voter recognition loses to someone that's never served in Washington. What the pro-Castle people don't seem to understand is that what the voters think in 2010 means a helluva lot more than what the voters considered important pre-2010.
The Wave isn't a love-bomb for the GOP, The Wave is giant, glaring eyeballs FU to Washington, D.C. Castle is Washington DC to his fingertips. You will come around in a few more election cycles.
This is an old, old, argument with Republicans, and we are always waiting for just one more or two more elections.
You're going to tell me what it means to be a Republican? You know, there are people around here calling other RINO's, and you know what? There isn't a damned RINO in the house. Not one.
And our "cause" is never realized.
So let's fall on our swords while we have 'em. You're wrong, of course. Back in '80, we ejected a few people like Frank Church. We do it all the time. It's an ongoing process. And we can never give up. We have to think practically for the greatest gain.
Die on your sword if you want, fair knight. But I shall not sing your praises.
In the meantime more and more citizens are falling prey to government welfare and government employment. We are running out of patriot voters.
See my comment re Frank Church. Think about welfare reform in the '90s. We put a stop it before, and we'll do it again. We'll never quit. It's less overwhelming an enemy on the battlefield than it is whack-a-mole.
NOW is the time to remove any and all threats to our liberty, there is no more time for glass half empty kind of reps. Only patriots.
We have to win LEGISLATION, not lose elections with the perfect candidate. We'll get a good part of that with Castle. None with the Donk.
Men like Castle will betray us, they will leak to the press, they will use powerful propaganda against us. On balance, Rinos hurt much more than they help.
Okay, this is silly. You think the problem with Arlen Specter is him running around spreading our secrets? Geezus.

O'Donnell could roast a live Hobo over a mesquite fire and then violate the charred corpse with a brass shoe-horn and she'd still be better than Castle.
Cap'N Trade is a nation destroying clusterfuck.
Anyone who voted for that should be hung upside down from the ankles with their throat slit and all the blood slowly drained from their body and fed to a Neocon- because that's exactly what Cap'N Trade would do to our economy.
Anyway, I gather from all I've learned the past couple weeks that O'Donnell could use a steady paycheck that a position in the Senate would provide so that's one less Hobo to worry about.

I want the maximal amount of legislation which aligns with conservative views/positions. The best way to achieve that is to have the maximum number of conservative senators along with the maximum number of senators with conservative leanings in at least SOME areas in place of very liberal senators who would typically come from states that would be inclined to send liberal.
Delaware being a liberal state would be sending a senator considerably to the right of it by sending Castle even if he were considerably to the left of the senate republicans.

What are the odds that Castle is the 51st and final Repub in the Senate this year anyway? My guess is less then 20%. And this is the Castle supporters main argument. He could easily be number 53 or 52 or 50 or 49 or 48 or 47, making their case moot. I think 20% is the high end.
And whats the odds that if the Repubs end up with magical vote number 51 that they actually play hardball on appointments? And whats the odds another gang of 14 developes making hardball nearly impossible anyway?
Now, whats the odds Castle jumps to the Dem party? Or the odds he votes with the dems on most issues giving more cover for the Maine twins? Or goes on meet the press and bashes every conservative and issue?
And how many Senate, Governship, and House seats will be lost in 2012 if the Dems have a 51 Seat Repub majority to slap around and blame? And how many more votes does Obama get in 2012? Remember Clinton in 1996? Maybe 50 is the better number to have in the Senate and look at this as a two election cycle like the Dems in 06 and 08. Make it a one-two double whammy. Sixty is the key number in the Senate, not 51.
I think O'Donnell has a better chance then many are giving her credit aswell. She lost by only 2 points more then McCain lost by in 2008 to a stronger canidate[Biden vs. Coons]. And this election is going to be a tsunami with the 20+% of blacks sitting home in Delaware. And Coons is a crappy canidate. She was losing by only 11 and 7 points in the last two polls I saw against Coons. A victory here should give her some positive mojo. She could win.

Tons of problems with your post.
First Castle winning means Castle untile 2016 - a repub from delaware until 2016 (the only people passing on the castle flipping smear are Erickson and other O'Donnell supporters).
Secondly, hardlining nominees has nothing to do with it. Having control of the judiciary committee means control of the schedule. IT means brining the appellate and district court nominee process to a halt.
Having Castle in there puts more pressure on conservadems because there's one less dem to hide behind in very close votes on unpopular issues.
Having Castle there means NOT having Coons who is more apt to support more liberaly policies that will likely have several dem defections.
Finally, if O'Donnell wins she's going to get the Angle treatment. It won't be like now where she has a good chunk fo the conservative blogospheres support as the main media narrative about her.

CAC, my man, this kind of thing is why I've been warning about overconfidence... the GOP is just this good at imploding. It's practically an art form with us. We've just got too many people who don't really want to win.
+10 can still happen, but it becomes a lot less likely if we can no longer count on Delaware. We'll end up relying even more on CA, WA, WI, which are, as I've argued for some time, problematic. We really need this seat.

There is nothing worse then a ignorant person with an opinion, for all the whining about RINO's , the Maine women voted with republicans 63% 68% of the time. If you knew anything , you would know that most important factor in determining how a politician will vote is the letter behind their name.
That's why Democrats were able to pass their radical agenda even though so many of their members were so called conservative. And this stupid business about throwing away a for sure Republican senate pickup to go after seats that at best are 50% Republican pick up is fcken ass backs, you people must be "my parents were related" ring of the republican big tent..

Moreover, her character is questionable, at best, why is this something that should just be overlooked? We sound hypocritical to kill Democrats for their "Culture of Corruption" and then support someone who clearly has issues with being forthright. The biggest threat to the conservative movement is electing people that seemingly have a strong conservative philosophy but poor moral fiber. When those folks start getting into big trouble, it will do nothing but serve to discredit the movement to the rest of the country, namely independent votes that we need and should covet. Haven't we learned anything from the whole Abrahamoff scandal? We need candidates who, before anything else, are honest and ethical and we should not expect anything less. I'm not a big fan of Castle, but conservatives don't need to sell-out their principles to support O'Donnell either. I was assuming we were all on the same side (other than that snark about Move-on but thats ok), I get both of your arguments completely.
I used to make them myself just a few years ago.
For me, the clear evidence shows that it has not worked, government is bigger than ever, we are losing more and more citizens.
How much longer can conservative politics win? How can conservative candidates campaign against healthcare? They cannot even campaign against ANY entitlement NOW. SS? Medicare? Federal Education?
We need VERY strong men and women for this...not weak Rinos (which is what defines a rino...weakness)
This is where Rino propaganda comes into play, it is not about leaking "secrets", it is about them being unable and unwilling to articulate and teach liberty and conservatism in the press.
They work against us in the press because they want to be re-elected by buying votes with entitlements.
This gets us no where.
It gets worse every year the public more dependent on gov for their very lives, and their livelihoods.
So again, it is you guys who want to keep the same strategy year after year, maybe you are both correct, and I am wrong.
But I don't see a speck of evidence that your way is working.
I think we ought to at least give the tea party a chance and see if they can get rid of as many rinos as possible, scare the rest into not running, and even give some who are weak chance to go before the press and press for conservatism, now knowing that a large group (tea parties) has their back.
Why isn't it worth a try?

Erick Erickson of RedState?
Erick Erickson, the fat bag of banhappy dicks who's such a crusading outsider that he brings Republican congressmen onto his site to guest-diary every few days?
Erick Erickson, the fearless monolith of principle who issued a laughable "ultimatum" to Chuck DeVore, whom he'd been pushing for months, right before throwing him under the bus in favor of the primary candidate he'd previously told everyone had to be opposed on principle?
Erick Erickson, the budding man-who-would-be-Breitbart who told the world he had all the goods on Will Folks; had the dude COLD, knew who was backing him, names, dates, everything; and strung people along for a week with this before finally admitting he never had anything; he was just joshin' with us and couldn't we see he was trying to make a point?
Erick Erickson, who when Kay Bailey Hutchison decided not to step down after all announced it was because "the GOP does not want a black man in the Senate"?
Erick Erickson? Fuckin' seriously?

I don't expect to roll back to before the new deal in one election. But I don't expect to EVER get there if we don't fight for our position.
We fight for our position by standing up for what we believe in all venues and articulating our values. People will listen. They are correct. That is assuming mine are the same as yours.
Fear of losing or desire for worthless power will not get us anywhere.
By worthless I mean the type of power we have held in the past wherein our side grew the government. (50's, 70's, 90, 00's) That is why people think there is no difference between the two parties.
If we ever actually want to win, and I mean ideas not individuals then we must stand behind our ideas. The liberals did and they managed to transform this nation into a Euro state despite the Constitution.
That is the power of standing behind your ideas.

I am not saying its likely Castle flips to the Dems inyourheadZOMBIE. But having 1 seat at 51-49, there will be a ton of temptation out there. The Dude is 72. What does he have to lose. And not just with him. Snowe could flip. Nelson could flip the other way. Anything is possible. Which is why having a 1 vote majority is much more marginal in its value then some seem to think IMO.
Zombie, you also said...."IT means bringing the appellate and district court nominee process to a halt".
I think that wouldn't go over all that well with the public. They could slow it down a bit, but thats about it. I am not saying there are not advantages here. I am simply saying, there are also disadvantages that the Castle people are ignoring aswell. They want to look at the big picture. Maybe they should also look at the even bigger picture such as 2012. Patience is a virtue. Some actually think Obama has been doing exactly that and he might not mind losing the house and or senate. Its also what some thought the dems were doing with the health care bill. Lose the house for 2 years, but gain government run socialist health care for eternity. And didn't some dem the other day say oh well, we are only losing the conservative seats anyway or something to that effect.

In campaign reports filed on Aug. 25, OÂ’Donnell reported raising
about $260,000 for her bid and had about $20,000 in the campaign bank
account. Castle had raised $3.2 million and had $2.6 million cash on

This makes no sense at all. Neither is the prediction that O'Donnell can catch fire in Delaware the way Scott Brown did in Massachusetts based on anything but fantasy. Coons may not be strongest Democratic candidate, but he is no Martha Coakley. And O'Donnell is no Scott Brown - he didn't have all the financial questions, the honesty questions, and the whole discrimination lawsuit thing.
Levin says we don't need Delaware? Then to hell with Levin! We need every doggoned seat we can win. If we had a principled conservative who could win, that's one reason to oppose Castle. We don't. Character counts, and O'Donnell's is questionable. Don't get complacent with the wave of Democratic ethics charges we are seeing - only a couple years ago we had our own wave of them. Do we really want a ticking ethical time bomb to blow up in our faces down the road, even if she could win?

We've been arguing all night that we wouldn't get everything we want with Castle, but that we'd get more than if the Donk were elected. And Genius shows up and tells us "Yeah, but with Castle we'll get bigger government!" As if losing him on an occasional vote had not been considered from the outset. And then, "Boy, sure looks like a lot of unprincipled liberal RINOs around here." Just brilliant, guys. It's like you guys can't read.
Or that you read and then see what you want to see--instead of what is on the screen in front of you. You know what? That is not helpful. It is a brand of ignorance that doesn't help us move the ball forward.
There are no fucking RINOS here. Not one. There are no liberals here. We understand that Castle won't be there on all votes. You're not providing a great "Aha!" moment by chiming in 300 posts later and saying Castle isn't a strong conservative.
What you are doing is not understanding, and in doing so, you're making things worse. Shut your mouths and open your eyes and ears. Hear what people are saying. No one likes Castle. Get it? No one here would prefer Castle if asked to pick. The practical ones among us realize that Castle has the better chance, and that we gain more with him than we do losing to the Donk.
One more thing, doubting anyone's patriotism here is not smart. But who is the greater patriot, a palooka who loses in the short term or a strategician who wins in the long term? ("Patriot" has no place in this argument, btw, but I use it because it seems to have a magical effect on some, regardless.)

First, Palin is paying back the Tea Party and DeMint for supporting Miller in AK. That's all this is. Nobody should give much of a shit either way. I would much rather gain Miller in AK and lose the seat in DE. But that's just me.
Second, I seem to recall this very blog attacking Palin for supporting Fiorina over DeVore. What the fuck changed? One minute we're supposed to suck semen straight from the cock of the "ONE FUCKIN' TRUE CONSERVATIVE (read: DeVore/ Hayworth/ Lamontaigne/). The next minute...."GO RINOS!!111!!!11!! YOU FUCKIN RULE!!!!11!!!!111!!!"
Third, I saw Gabe's tweet about judicial nominees, and how we could derail them if we had a majority in the Senate. Fair point, and I consider Gabe to be the smartest blogger here. But right now, even with a 9-seat deficit in the Senate, we're blocking nominees by procedure. The ability to do this will increase as we pick up seats (I'm thinking 7 or 8 minimum in the Senate). Plus we WILL control the House. I know nominees don't have to be approved by the House, but every law and budget that goes to POTUS' desk does. This means the House can say, "comply with our wishes, or NO SOUP FOR YOU".
Fourth, what guarantee do I have that Castle will ever vote with the R's EVAH? I will be shocked if he doesn't switch parties within 24 hours of being sworn in (see Jeffords, Jim, and Specter, Arlen). This is a guy who is to the left of Collins and Snowe most of the time. He makes John Fuckin' McCain and Lindsy Graham look like fire-breathing reincarnations of Barry Goldwater. It's more likely he'll join some gang-of-retards with other RINO turds who will side with the dems to advance the O-Turd's nominees the same way the gang-of-whatevah blocked Bush's appointees.
So fuck Mike Castle. I hope he joins Lisa Scruntowski in the unemployment line soon. He's a backstabbing RINO turd who will cause us heartaches innumerable.

I think a lot of people are misreading the American people as a whole. Sure, castle, if the world had not changed and it was business as usual would be the right pick cause he has all the money, all the power, the connections and he can make a good run for the seat, but nothing is guaranteed. But things aren's business as usual. These are difficult times and the challenges are enormous. I almost feel someone like O'Donnell, sort of a regular person who goes to home depot and takes the train, might be a better candidate to listen to the people as opposed to a professional weapons grade politician who feels he deserves the seat and is willing to do anything to get it. I was listening to talk radio the other day and an O'Donnell supporter was furious and horrified that castle would not even dane to debate O'Donnell, or even acknowledge her. I remember thinking to myself "man, that is a huge mistake, cause we women always vote and stuff like that never sits well with us"

Now it's come to a point where it's unsustainable and to reverse the trend isn't going to happen overnight. People still love government taking care of them and some free money. Occasional votes from Castle are better than no votes, and they're also more important that your weird notion of propaganda. Propaganda opportunities arise when Castle doesn't vote with us? Like Obama's going to grab Castle and have his picture taken with him and score points in speeches by mentioning Castle's name. Just like he did with Arlen Specter. The fact that someone can post O'Donnell's "OMG MIKE CASTLE IS IN MY BUSHES" speech and the only responses are "That doesn't sound so crazy to me" is unbelievable.
Seriously. That's a Roman Emperor level of paranoia there.
You're right. The Republican party is trying to destroy O'Donnell, in the same way that the Democrats want to destroy Greene. She's a fucking embarrassment.
Name one reason that O'Donnell would make a good senator. The only thing she's ever done is spectacularly lose elections, all while leeching off her campaign funds.
She claim 5,900 in yearly income. Please, give me some sort of explanation for that that doesn't involve corruption.
You have absolutely no way of even knowing that she's any more conservative than Castle. She has no voting record. The only way you can get any sort of idea of her politics is to look at her life. And that is not the life of a conservative. It's a life of a liberal political hack.
She saw the Tea Party wave and decided to hitch a ride, and it's working. She's an opportunist. Pure and simple. If she were to be elected, the only thing she'd be concerned about is continuing to suck on the public teet. She'd vote whatever way would be most likely to get her reelected. In Delaware, what kind of voting do you think that would be?
So go ahead, kick out the sure winner RINO for a corrupt longshot RINO who happens to be completely fucking crazy.

But what I'm seeing in these comments is a basic disconnect. I don't know how many times some commenters have referred to the Republicans as "us", and to us as "Republicans". "We have to get the majority". You got a mouse in your pocket, because the Rs haven't been "us" for a long time. There is no "we" to a large portion of the country now. I'm in Ohio. You really think George Voinovich is my Senator?
If your goal is depriving the Dems of the Senate majority, a worthy goal, then it's Castle all the way. If your goal is to slap nine inches of limp dick across the cheeks of the R establishment, a likewise worthy goal, then it's O'Donnell.
The "Whassup" Repub establishment has failed to grasp the mood of its own electorate. They should've gotten the hint from the overwhelming "meh" given to McCain, but they didn't. They should've gotten it from the polls, the demonstrations, the reactions of the media, etc., but they must have been at the bondage club when all that shit went down. Capt. Clusterfuck is a master of reading public opinion compared to the brain dead shitwads running the R party.
In short, you various supporters of different sides need to realize that your "opponents" in this have very different goals than you do, and they are both worthy goals. Myself, I'm really torn on this. Sure, I'm apprehensive about running O'Donnell. Unless she heads out to the union halls and gives free lap dances, I doubt she can win. At the same time, Castle is dependably undependable, and the only plus of electing him will be another Senator towards a majority for a governing apparatus that is itself highly suspect, but at least, hopefully, marginally better than the Cirque de Douchebag currently running us into the ground. And to have Castle there for six years picking his nose and flicking the boogers in random directions? You O'Donnell supporters: the Castle guys are not "RINOs". They're trying to strip the Dems of power. You Castle guys: the O'Donnell backers are not "purity conservatives", they're trying to change the political establishment for the long term by shitting in the Van Voorhees' cereal. Both you sets of shitballs: quit getting mad at the other side, and realize that your candidate sucks.
Posted by: Herr Morgenholz at September 13, 2010 01:14 AM (0Vo4/)
Of course Castle sucks. I've admitted that from the get-go. I have no love for the man and have always said that he was the logical choice for the GOP to recruit for this race because as far as the party bench in Delaware goes he's pretty much IT. There never were any viable conservative alternatives to this C&T-voting shithead.
And yeah, a limp-dick slap across establishment cheek is a very worthy goal. Problem is, that's only satisfying for about the next 24 hours. The next morning, we all wake up to the hungover reality that we have a non-starter of a candidate and that we may have just thrown away a spectacular tool with which to tell Obama to go fuck himself for the next two years, just to buy an evening's satisfaction.
And yes it is in fact "we"; the GOP is "us" insofar as it is the only apparatus with which conservatives can stop the Left, short of things the Head Ewok doesn't want us talking about. This is the army we have. Even when it sucks, as it does in this contest, we have little choice but to fight with it. To throw away the Senate in the name of an establishment bitch-slap is madness.

So you know I'm "O'Donnell People," eh?
I stated "She's gonna win." That's based on the swell in support (fast becoming a tsunami) I'm seeing. My point is you assumers, and those name-calling types have to deal with it.
I can see a movement here, and I can see it's gaining steam, not losing it. From this distance, all the folks screaming about the lunacy, the terrible strategy, and weak candidates look like little dogs yapping at a bulldozer.
Sure, you can make "you break it/own it" statements. But obviously they not only "own" it, the TOOK it. That's what the "let's play it safe" crowd is missing.
This ceased being about "winning the Senate" a while ago. Screw that. I used to worry about this movement, too (not that they're crazy, but that they were missing chance after chance to make the safe play.) But it's proven tself to enough people that the Cascade Preference (or Preference Cascade) is ON.
Right now.
You aren't gonna stop it by flames, anger, or media talking points.
Losing Delaware isn't that big a deal. Castle will be gone either way, and there are more contests, and other ways to play.

I'm neither Republican nor Conservative. I just told you there's a movement happening and you aren't going to change it. Especially if you make assumptions about what people think, why they do things, and who they are. Must be some damn fine Soma available where you live.
Me, I just watch what I'm seeing happen, and she's going to win, as it looks now.
The "Fucking losers" are not the folks who are steamrolling this, as it appears from every angle you look at it.
Suicide bombers of conservatism? Since when does a "suicide bomber" march in huge ranks with all the big guns?
This is as absurd as claiming a herd of elephants is just a noisy dog. That we could talk about Obama like.

It also represents DE voters possibly picking up on the fact that 99.9% of the negative crap about O'Donnell that is out there is unsubstantiated BS and the other .1% is distortion.
And no, this is NOT a "purity" issue. Castle doesn't have enough "conservative" in him to be enriched to weapons grade Republican.
And no, the "only Castle can win" argument is pure BS. That argument never was very good and using it became ludicrous after 2008.
In any case it will be over for the primary after tomorrow.

Well I have just read the first 100 comments and it is simply a repeat of the same tired arguments from the past two weeks.
We have reached an impasse in which neither side is going to budge. When this argument first started I looked at Castle's record and said to myself this guy is a flaming shitbag DIABLO; no way I can support him. But I saw all of the stuff about what a loon O'Donnell was and I said WTF? can't the Repubs in DE get their shit together? My first post was "we have lost this race already, neither candidate is worth a shit".
But then I started looking into all the allegations. I found they were ALL either distortions or BS rumor in the same manner as the Palin attacks of 2008. That is when I said better O'Donnell support.
The Palin and DeMint weighed in with their support.

Like a lot of people in politics with little money, her house in the city IS her campaign headquarters. She runs her campaign out of the same house she lives in (rents). She used some campaign funds to help pay that rent. That is perfectly legal AND is not unethical.
Look back through some of Fox's articles from the past several weeks. They looked into a lot of this stuff and seemed to be OK with what she had done and her explanations. Add to that the fact that NONE of the attacks that have been posted on here ever provides a link to anything of substantive evidence, or the link provides a site with an ax to grind and the article is distorted as hell (Weekly Standard civil suit article)
Also, I would submit that Palin and DeMint with their political connections would be a lot better able to sift out the BS from the truth than any of us and their endorsement in this case means even more than it normally would.
In any case, time for my morning walk. Back in a few.

I normally support the most conservative electable candidate. In past years that would've probably precluded O'Donnell.
But things are different this year. Conservatism is making a big comeback nationwide. There's lots of conservative enthusiasm everywhere while Democrats are are full of malaise. O'Donnell is surging.
Under these circumstances I really think O'Donnell is electable. If she wins the primary the key will be increasing conservative enthusiasm and getting out the vote. The GOP will have to be on board in the effort, but a victory is doable. It's up to the conservatives in Delaware to see that it gets done.

That is the traditional kick off for the hard campaigning. You can expect the Democrats in all the races to start narrowing the gaps in the polls as the voters start paying more attention to politics instead of vacation and backyard cookouts.
The Republicans have enjoyed a huge advantage in enthusiasm because of the Obama-Pelosi cabal in DC destroying the country. As the voters come out of their Summer funk the traditional yellow dog Democrat cockroaches will crawl out of the baseboards and begin polluting the national kitchen again.

To answer Drew's question, Most people in any state are not political junkies. They know very little about policy or ideology, they sort of act on a knee jerk reaction philosophy. Much of their decision making occurs as a result of communications between them and their friends and acquaintances, not a deep analysis of the candidates.
What I am getting at is that it is perfectly reasonable to believe that fickle voters might vote Republican for Senate and Democrat for the house. This sort of dichotomy is not at all uncommon and only looks peculiar to us politics junkies.

Seems to be the same arguments. It's just a bit different in that it's coming from RedState, which had been nominally supporting O'Donnell (or at least Erickson was) until about a week ago, when all the gay attack stuff started crawling out.
Posted by: Tom in Korea at September 13, 2010 04:34 AM (nS7nk)
Graham controls the State Republican Party in SC. The State Republican Party in SC is also like the NY Republican Party; it is dysfunctional. Hell look at that Republican Gov Primary where the State level attack dogs lit in on Haley like yellow jackets attacking a piece of meet left raw on the grill.
Also look at the "Republican majority" in the SC legislature; Tax and Spend FDR Democrats to the core in a hard Red State. Frankly I can not fathom how they keep getting elected.
But things are starting to look up. I think all those attacks on Haley and the antics of Graham have finally woke up some people. Graham has been censured by 4 local county Republican Parties now. I have a feeling if he were up for election this cycle instead of last he would be primaried out.

t won't help that Castle will more than likely endorse the Democrat.
If that happens that'll prove the point.
I'm really very divided on this question. Not that it matters since I don't live in Delaware. I do think the Party is stronger if the Rinos are taken to task, however, I'm not completely sure if Rinos are Rinos because they are ideologically Rinos (Bloomberg, Arnold, Christ) or whether they are Rinos because they think that is the only way they can be elected in a blue state. We should have learned something from the McCain debacle-playing to the middle loses the right. I wish there were some way to determine how many people you lose on the right when you try to pick up some of the middle. I do prefer right candidates who are more Christi, Miller, Rubio than the Angle, O'Donnell version but I don't know if we can find them everywhere.
I also don't think that WV is lost. I think that state might go right now that their source of pork has gone to his just reward. I can't imagine they will side with Obama if the right can effectively link Obama with whomever their lefty candidate is. Don't completely discredit what Bill Clinton says about them, he's probably right. They have traditionally voted in the presidential elections for what appears to be the southern/redneck canidate. except for Dukakis which looks like an outlier.

The gay "attack" stuff was not from O'Donnell. The attack on her was that she didn't distance herself from it "fast enough". I thought that was pretty lame.
Now after the State Party went after the TPE in court she told Castle to "man up", I don't consider that a "gay attack". Hell we use that here all the time.
Posted by: Vic at September 13, 2010 04:40 AM (/jbAw)
At the very least, an O’Donnell victory would mean you won’t have to hold your breath every time an important vote comes up in the Senate – wondering if she’s going to go “squishy” on us. But as a Republican, if you thoroughly enjoy the sensation of being kicked in the nuts on a regular basis by GOP “stalwarts” such as McCain, Graham, Snow, Collins, Specter, et al, then by all means, Castle is your man.

County Sues Farmer, Cites Too Many Crops
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County is suing a local farmer for growing too many vegetables, but he said he will fight the charges in the ongoing battle neighbors call “Cabbagegate.”
For those of you not familiar with GA when you think DeKalb County just think Atlanta and its suburbs. Here we have a guy with a 2 acre plot growing vegetables in the county outside the city limits yet he is in violation of some kind of zoning ordinance.
That would have been unthinkable when I was a kid in GA in the 50s. But since then Atlanta has had a major influx of Northerners from the rust belt escaping those kinds of laws that kill freedom and the economy.
Yes, escaping only to implement them in their new home. Atlanta is now solid blue and it makes GA a borderline purple State now.

Its protecting turf, max, nothing more than that. In DE and the other "blue" states, the socialists have given the RINOs a fiefdom in exchange for mounting a polite and losing, but never explicitly anti-socialist, opposition. The tea partiers are gonna screw up that gig, they fear (correctly). For this crowd, "conservatives" are great in flyover country, but most unwelcome on their own turf.

I think that's probably the biggest problem in MA (and my guess would be a place like Delaware too): The belief that we can't win is so gigantic a lot of people don't bother.
Conservatives (even nominal ones) for many years didn't even bother running. I can understand why: the press here will attack you, you'll get maybe 40% of the vote if you're lucky, and probably wind up spending your own money.
Scott Brown's election has kind of changed the dynamic, but whether or not the GOP actually rises from the dead here depends on what happens in November. If we pick up a House seat, even one, it could signal a huge sea change.
I'm hoping at the very least we pick up a few seats in the legislature, maybe enough to where it can't override a governor's veto.

Most of the speeches I have seen from Tea Party people, and yes there is no Tea Party central, they are OT concerned with social issues.
ALL of what I have seen from them is "small government", fiscal responsibility, low taxes, and follow the Constitution "as written".

I'm pissed at the NY GOP.....weeks ago you could see that gillibrand was up for grabs, possibly other seats might go....they are impotent...
The conservative party in NY is the party with the balls and isn't that ironic.

Most of the speeches I have seen from Tea Party people, and yes there is no Tea Party central, they are OT concerned with social issues.
ALL of what I have seen from them is "small government", fiscal responsibility, low taxes, and follow the Constitution "as written".
And THAT is right down my alley.
I think that's what I was saying. I didn't suggest that the teaparty was particularly socially conservative, but I think that is the fear in some of the establishment types.
I get the impression that they look at the normal hard working constitutional crowds and think, oh no, I bet these people aren't sophisticated and they won't appreciate political give-and-take and the nuances of wheelin' and dealin'. They might even believe in God.
I could give a rats ass what else they believe in as long as they believe in the Constitution--as written.

I'm amazed at how this primary devolved.
1.O'Donnell has positions that many Republicans like, particularly those that will bother to vote in a primary. Castle certainly does not.
2.Between the nature of the general electorate here, O'Donnells' weaknesses and Castles' name recognition, Castle is clearly the best (most electable) candidate for the general, which others here have noted repeatedly (some ad nausuem).
3. If Castle had disavowed Cap n' trade, or promised to strive for a 'D' rating, instead of his usual 'F', from the NRA next year, we wouldn't be having this row.
4. Attacking her in front of the people who are the MOST DISPOSED TO LIKE HER OVER CASTLE WAS STUPID. The local party clearly picking favorites and shunting outsiders away didn't help. it would be interesting to see what fallout, if any, will come form the local GOP filing suit aiming at the tea party. Even if Castle wins, we're likely to see a further dimisihiing on an already small party (think New York Conservative party).
5. Discounting an endorsement from Palin or DeMint was wrong, (see reason #1). The general electorate may not like Palin, or may even vote against her endorsement; but we're not talking about that electorate yet.
6. People including Jim Gerathy keep talking about asix year term, and the likelhood of Castle not running again. it's a four year term (replacing Biden) and he'll be 75 then. We've seen an 80 year old Specter doing gymnastics to stay in office, and there's reason to believe that Byrd was embalmed before he was removed from his office. Don't count on this either way.

I think the establishment republicans dislike fiscal conservatives almost as much as they dislike social conservatives.

No. No I do not. This is the weakest argument made in favor of Castle. The jusge who meddled in DADT was a Clinton appointee, confirmed by a Republican controlled Judiciary committee and Senate. So was Ginsburg. There are over 20 years of examples of leftist judges getting past Republican Senators. We do not 'Bork' people. Leftists like Biden do.
The most important thing to come from Castle would be the vote for a Republican Senate Majority Leader, who could block further ugliness from reaching the Senate floor. That's about it. Because no one here can argue with ANY surety that we can expect more from Castle.

Blue Hen,
Nice analysis. I agree with it, but wonder whether the Palin endorsement will help or hurt in the final analysis. My feeling is that many of the R's in DE (not that there are many R's in DE, period) are moderates and squishes who do not like Palin. Castle's scare campaign may also work on these people. We got a call from Chris Christie, for Chrissakes, on this. My wife, who does not exactly follow Republican politics, was wondering what the heck was going on and why Christie would be worrying about Mike Castle.

This is a fraud. The same fraud which is used to show O'Donnell can't win the general. Besides being from August, not Sept, in both races it is a single Dem against either of two Rs. The Dem is assumed so Dem voters do not split their loyalties and has better name recognition like Castle. The Rs in both cases are having hard fought primaries which polarize their party. The hard core supporters of either R in each race are refusing to give their support to the other R in this poll when asked the question and say undecided instead. Once there candidate has been eliminated the majority, and I would say near all this year, will switch to the winning candidate. No matter who is the winner in either of these primaries for each race the winning candidate will start with 45% of the vote minimum. They may still lose but neither race is a forgone conclusion. There is no Dem running for an open seat, House or Senate, that is going to cruise this year. I think even Chuck Schumer with token opposition will struggle to reach 60% this year.

I have lost track of the calls that I've received, including Sarah Palin (yes, I was thrilled to her call me, no I did not retreat to the bunk).
O'Donnell is improving in the polls. Something, or somethings, is causing it. I participated in that PPP poll. You'll notice that Palin's endorsement was seen as a positive here, at least among those who will be voting tomorrow morning.
I have been maintaining that the negative stuff was likely to backfire, and it was painful to notice that all of the positive Castle stuff I did hear, was for fiscal sanity. I know that the "Castle won't repeal Obamacare" stuff is overblown. In one case, what was said was downright false. But also note that no one has explained cap and trade. That piece of crap makes no sense to any R or D in Delaware, execpt the chattering class ( to which Castle belongs). And also note that many here have been concerned that the Republicans may not carry out the repeal of Obamacare that we all want.
The local party was its usual sluggish, anti outsider self. It did not sell Castle well, counting on 'hey, the guy's been the guy' to do the job. And then they ran stuff in a tea party type year that simply isn't playing well.

Rasmussen poll September 7, 2010 "Castle captures 71% of the GOP vote, while O'Donnell earns 63% support among voters in her own party. While Coons is backed by 70% of Democrats against OÂ’Donnell, he earns the vote from just 55% of Democratic voters when matched against Castle. Voters not affiliated with either major party prefer Castle over Coons but favor the Democrat if O'Donnell is his opponent."

This question was asked in the PPP poll. I was asked which (if any) of the three Rs I'd vote for. Then I was asked whether I'd vote for any of them against that jerk Carney 9The Dem stuffed suit for the House). m vote was clearly anit-Carney all three times. Maybe peole do hold out, but that area was explored by the poll.

Castle opposed the Lilly Ledbetter pay act, which the ACU described as a “new Pandora’s Box for trial lawyers.” He voted for a January 2009 bill that would prevent the Treasury from spending the $350 billion that remained in the TARP program. He opposed the Obama stimulus. He voted against efforts to water down legislation barring federal funds to ACORN or other organizations that employ people who have been convicted of election-law violations. He voted to eliminate the earmark for the airport near Johnstown, Pa., named after Rep. John Murtha. He voted to cut discretionary government spending in the appropriations for the Departments of Housing and Transportation by 5 percent.
He supported an amendment to the health-care bill that would ban using taxpayer funds to provide abortion services, an interesting vote for a self-described pro-choice Republican. He voted against the health-care bill.
A central point of the OÂ’Donnell folks is that Mike Castle is unacceptable because he doesnÂ’t support the repeal of Obamacare. But thatÂ’s only half his stated position. Castle thinks trying to repeal Obamacare while Obama is president is a waste of time, but heÂ’s open to the idea if the GOP can regain control of the White House (he said this in April.) If the GOP tries and fails to overcome an Obama veto, they can always try again in January 2013 if a Republican wins the presidency two years from now.
He voted to extend the repeal of the estate tax and opposed making the new estate-tax rates permanent. He voted for a bill to repeal the TARP program and lower the federal debt limit. Finally, he voted against the financial-industry-regulation legislation backed by Barney Frank.
Despite his ACU rating, his recent voting record has been more conservative than Scott Brown's, for example. This is what we expect from a similarly blue state. You might argue this is because he is coming up for an election, but pragmatism is a desirable quality in this instance. The winner in this election will be seated immediately, not in January. Castle has given a statement on how he will vote if nominated and elected. “The only business that should be conducted during a lame-duck session of Congress is keeping the government running until the newly elected legislators are sworn in. I do not agree with those who say this period of time should be used for passing controversial legislation and would not play a role in helping to circumvent the will of American voters.”

That was fun. Obama and Specter touting Arlen's stimulus bill vote....so excited about the new 60 majority.
Of course Castle will wait until an opportune time...some commie legislation like a VAT tax, a carbon tax, international criminal court....who knows.
Anything to help the messiah get reelected, what is more beautiful than a Republican telling the public that Obama deserves 4 more years!

That statement has been taken several ways. Many posters have noted that attempts at repeal are not a waste of time. Judging from the ads Dems are running right now, forcing them to vote in favor of it would be advantageous from a tactical standpoint.
Again, this is item that would be appreciated most by a primary voter. And this is the election we're talking about at the moment.
I do agree that he has voted against most of the spending; his vote in favor of cap and trade has been used effectively to dilute his other votes on the subject.

I meant the argument is a fraud, not the poll. As to your other point about the internals my original point still applies. In either case you have people who support one of the Rs saying undecided or even switching to the Dem because they are still in battle mode. That ends with the primary. I am not saying these polls are wrong. I am just saying you can't make a one to one comparison to the general from polls taken during the primary. Linda McMahon in CT is a perfect example. Prior to the primary she was well behind Bloomers but once that was over she closed considerably despite no recent scandals for Bloomers and a large cut back in her advertising to concentrate for later.

Can't wait for Castle's party switch presser with Obama, (remember Specter).
He won't switch, and I don't think that he can. And I don't think that he can or will run as an independent. My guess is that if he loses, the party will forge ahead with the FEC suit, to knock her off the ballot and replace her. Dunno.

Tattoo nailed it in 622. I'm voting in Delaware, and as much as it pains me to vote for friggin' Mike Castle, it hurts more to think the Dems will take that seat for another 4 years. Yes, I'd feel more comfortable with O'Donnell's purported conservatism (she's never held office, so who knows how she would really vote?), but I'm not more comfortable with her questionable character.
And no one from outside of Delaware realizes that if Coons takes the Senate, we who live in New Castle County will get stuck with another questionable Dem leader for county government, Paul Clark. We get screwed comin' and goin'.

More questions -- what's John McCormack's connection to Castle, the GOP establishment, etc. and why is he carrying their water? Why didn't he, or some other hero blogger publish this information weeks ago? It was a matter of public record, yes? Why wait till the eve of the primary? Oh, I see -- it is great strategy, plus it shows them uppity non-northeastern conservatives what's what.
If this loading of the old trebuchet with shit and flinging it all over the landscape works tomorrow, then Castle and your hoped-for committee chairman had better not be caught hauling butt for crap & tax, or splitting the difference on the rest of the Democrat's America-destroying agenda.
But looking at Castle's voting record in the House, I wouldn't bet on it.
