Preparing for the SOTU
— Slublog

Tonight, in his first official State of the Union, President Barack Obama is going to explain "why he thinks the American people are angry and frustrated."

Hilarity sure to ensue.

Let's face it - this is likely going to be a tedious speech (as most SOTUs are) in which Obama outlines new and interesting ways to spend our money, but we here at the AOSHQ are here to help you get through it. First, there will be live-blogging with the usual suspects at the helm. No word on whether special guest stars such as Peggy Noonan, Chris Matthews will show up.

Since it's a good bet that at least 99.4% of you will be in possession of an alcoholic beverage of some sort, various writers are offering various games that, if the rules are followed, are sure to make you regret playing. Seriously, don't play these. It's not like they're just handing out replacement livers.

The Huffington Post - don't let the website keep you away. This one is pretty funny.

The San Francisco Chronicle
- Funny, but this one requires actual physical activity at times, so it's not exactly Moron Nation-friendly.

S.E. Cupp - The most moron-friendly of the bunch.

For those who are not drinking-inclined, how about a game of bingo? I've created this one (pdf), and Nom de Plume was nice enough to send us the one available below the jump, which was great since I was too lazy to create multiple cards. Obama State of the Union BINGO card.jpg

We hope this is enough to help you endure listening to Obama attempt populism for an hour.

Had my uber liberal friend, when I said that BO seems to do what Beck predicts said "oh you are so dumb, don't you realize Beck is working for us".  I was a little shocked and she said it matter o factly.   wonder if this is how they are planning to undermine Beck?

33 The White House is taking the "high speed rail" bait.  This is one of those policies that people love to hear about, but politicians hate to debate.  They know it is almost impossible to support high speed rail policies because it really isn't "high speed" and it isn't "high speed" because when a Treasury funds it every politician wants a stop constructed in their district.

It's quick sand.  The White House is walking right into it.

I like how several folks have drinking games based on what they know he'll say, because this means the WH speechwriters have now read those same games and are scrambling to re-write the speech.  (To take out the references or put more in, I don't know.)

You could program those phrases into a "Sound board" type thing and make Instant Obama speeches any time you wanted to.  Which would probably be never, but it's a fun idea.

Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama will propose extending a temporary tax incentive through 2010 that encourages businesses to accelerate purchases of equipment, an administration official said.

The president will call for renewal of the 50 percent “bonus depreciation” in his State of the Union address tonight, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Extending the break, which expired Dec. 31, would save companies that make qualified purchases of equipment such as tractors, wind turbines, solar panels, and computers a collective $38 billion this year and next, the official said.

The economy is saved or created! Those wind turbine and solar panel purchases will turn everything around.

The left hate Reagan with a boiling passion - but they are happy to attempt to mimic Reagan's "charm".

The problem for the leftwingers is that Reagan was authentic.  Obama and his progressives are a fake as the day is long.

I heard there was going to be a gay guy (Trevor Yager) sitting with Michelle, as well. I guess so they can show his face when Obama talks about DADT.  I guess it's no coincidence that yesterday Mommy in Chief announced all these new services/programs for military families.

That's one thing I can always count on at AoSHQ: a littany of newfangled put-downs, insults and swearings. Perhaps we should compile a reference sheet. That way I wouldn't feel so uncreative when compelled to refer to someone as just a plain old "asshole" -- I could cross-reference for something more colorful.

150 If I was in Congress, I'd be organizing my colleagues to simply say "Bullshit" in a conversational voice every time Obama said something stupid. The reaction from O, Reid and Pelosi would be priceless. Especially as the speech wore on. It would be even money on which one of them snapped out first.

This move will further hurt Obama especially if China start saying, US not going to moon, we try to do that now.

Anyone who also thinks that this money should be use for the poor, NASA is only less than 1 percent of the federal budget. The poor already get 1 trillion in programs and entitlements already.

172 one of the things that is killing the Constellation project is that it is, behind schedule and way over budget.

Nothing new there.  My rule of thumb has always been triple the estimates and add another 50% on top of that.  Then you'll be close to what its really going to cost.

The real problem is that trying to do something "on the cheap" costs more than doing it right in the first place.  If you bid something and always take the lowest bid, you're almost always going be disappointed because that bid was lowballed to get the job and get you locked into that vendor.

The highest bid invariably comes from a guy who doesn't really want that job but if you're willing to pay crazy money, then they'll grudgingly do it.  The middle/high bids are almost always the most realistic.

I would love to see more and more space programs and ventures taken up by private firms. First of all NASA is a govt agency, like all govt agencies it is plagued by the usual bureaucratic issues. A privately run space agency will bore cost efficient and effectively run.   That will not happen until there is a private interest to be had in space.
