— Gabriel Malor Mayo says the U.S. government does not pay enough to cover the cost of care.
More than 3,000 patients eligible for Medicare, the government’s largest health-insurance program, will be forced to pay cash if they want to continue seeing their doctors at a Mayo family clinic in Glendale, northwest of Phoenix, said Michael Yardley, a Mayo spokesman. The decision, which Yardley called a two-year pilot project, won’t affect other Mayo facilities in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.Obama in June cited the nonprofit Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for offering “the highest quality care at costs well below the national norm.” Mayo’s move to drop Medicare patients may be copied by family doctors, some of whom have stopped accepting new patients from the program, said Lori Heim, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, in a telephone interview yesterday.
“Many physicians have said, ‘I simply cannot afford to keep taking care of Medicare patients,’” said Heim, a family doctor who practices in Laurinburg, North Carolina. “If you truly know your business costs and you are losing money, it doesn’t make sense to do more of it.”
Bloomberg couldn't get the White House to comment, but some utopianist from a "health policy" think tank says that the complaint that patients cannot pay is "overstated." He then says the decision to forgo Medicare patients is all about money. He apparently didn't connect those particular dots.

No shit, it's all about money! What a moron. Dr. Utopia's crew continually prove that they have no concept about how their plans won't survive contact with reality.
If Dr. Utopia gets his way, we will all be on Medicare. Then we won't have to worry about getting good medical care -- there won't be any (except for the Democrat party elite, of course).

So the world famous Mayo clinic, a freaking non-profit organization that Obama applauded, is dropping Medicare patients.
This is gonna leave a mark.
I'll bet Barry is severely pissed at this news. It's gonna make him look like a real dumbass.

Is this related to the unpassed Medicare fix - or are they saying the current rates before the rollback are too low?
According to the article the current Medicare reimbursement rates are too low. Wait until the Democrat's Medicare cutbacks are instituted. You aint seen nothing yet.

Might be time to set up an off-books relationship with a local doctor for regular care issues. For serious treatment, the best bet might be to save up a cash pile and self-insure using off-short resources. Maybe even buy a health insurance plan off shore? For example, the Dominican Republic has medical tourism with excellent resort-like facilities. While visiting there I met an American man with a host of health issues - he documented his experiences on his web site. I tried to use that damned tiny url to post a link, but that doesn't work for shit. His site is thornlesspath.com. Go to the Luperon page and click on DR Health Care Experiences.
It's pretty amazing, and I think it's worth checking out. You don't need a visa to visit the DR, they generally like Americans, and you can enjoy some nice weather while getting your body fixed up.

I think that has begun. I have read elsewhere of Costa Rica becoming a medical service destination with a pool of good American doctors and well-equipped hospitals.
If Obamacare becomes a reality, I guess Costa Rica will become our escape valve for obtaining the medical care that Obamacare will not provide in a timely fashion. On the bright side, if Obamacare becomes a reality, the Canadians will really be screwed and they will get to enjoy socialized medicine without being able to make a quick hop across the border into the U.S.

The only problems with this system are the following:
1 The selected implant may not (will probably not)
2 The surgeon may have zero experience in putting it in
3 The implant may be "pre-owned."
As to the provenance of the pre-owned implants, I would prefer not to think about it.

Now, factor in the planned REDUCTION in Medicare funding, as dictated by the bill the fraud will sign, and you get the sense that it's headed right down a highway to Hell.
Doctors everywhere have "shut off" Medicaid/Medicare patients and Obama wants to ADD thirty million more? I know that in Texas and Vermont, you have to look high and low to find ANY doctor who accepts Medicaid or Medicare. If and when you do find one, it's a day trip just to get to their office.
It makes NO sense at all. None. Zero. Zilch. Zippo.
I become eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare in August. It should be one Helluva ride.

You guys really don't play much chess, do you?
No ... Barry most likely put them up to it. Mayo is likely in on the subterfuge (note that it's not Mayo worldwide, just these 4 clinics in Arizona ... and only affecting about 3,000 patients).
Only now Barry has the impetus to convince Congress to pass a law requiring all hospitals to treat Medicare patients.
And ... mate.

There ya go.
Cutting half a trillion from medicare payments and then counting that money twice as savings didn't have any impact on the Mayo Clinic.
The Mayo Clinic agrees with Obama's decision to kill off hundreds of thousands of seniors, and was going to do its part anyway.
Posted by: proreason at January 01, 2010 10:48 AM (Rllt+)
This particular Mayo Clinic is just down the street from my house. It's not a very large operation: It's in one of those single story medical condo office park deals.
There's yet another Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale (on Mayo Blvd no less) that's actually hospital sized, and from TFA it's still accepting Medicare.
I believe the rub with Medicare is that residencies are actually funded through Medicare. So if you have residents, you have to take Medicare.
The other thing to consider with Medicare/Medicaid is that many doctors who still accept those programs can only afford to do so by walking a very fine line between fraud and sharp business practices: They've figured out how to use billing to circumvent the system.
Posted by: Topper Harley at January 01, 2010 11:14 AM (LfkYP)
Medicare is "government health care" - by definition. Aren't conservatives against "government health care?"
If Mayo says they're not going to do government health care any longer, isn't that a good thing?
Aren't those bums getting "free" health care on our dime now out one more place to get it? Doesn't that make "government health care" not as good as "private health care?"
Aren't they now forced to pay for their own health care? And get it from a private business - paying cash?
How is this bad again?
Posted by: someguy at January 01, 2010 11:51 AM (VRJIW)
i don't know why liberals seem to think paying doctors almost nothing has no downsides. i mention the already fairly high refusal rates for medicare in many areas and they just don't seem to get that it is already a problem.
it's like they don't understand that doctors have to pay salaries for non-doctor staff, buy equipment, rent or purchase office space, settle student loan debt, and provide income for a family (doctors like to have kids, the horror).
and that isn't even counting insurance and taxes.
i guess they think doctors pluck a practice off the practice tree and have zero costs so when they charge 100$ for a visit it is pure profit.

The federal government is now in charge of most of your life and business options, the takeover has been astonishing this past year, and since it's been unreported by the main/lame stream press, it has gone unnoticed by many.
There are 3 major auto companies in the US, the federal government owns 2 of them. ALL of the major banks are owned by or beholden to the federal government. 95% of ALL mortgages in the US are now funneled through either 1)FHA or 2) Fannie Mae, or 3) Freddie Mac. The Federal Reserve and its policies, the enormous debts being run up through failed stimulus policies, the run up in stock prices unconnected to reality, continuing high unemployment, most state governments & municipalities teetering on bankruptcy, who benefits from all this chaos, the federal government that's who. Never waste a good crisis.
Cap and Trade (TAX) has been passed by the House and could still pass the Senate, obviously any bill at all in this area would be signed by The Won, thus putting the entire energy sector under White House control. Gas at $5 per gallon, check. Home heating costs at thousands of dollars per home per month, check. Check out the real reason why so-called "Smart Meters" are being touted as so energy efficient, what a Smart Meter does is shut off the power to your house when the energy czar feels like it.
The destruction of health care is proceeding apace. If the government takes it over, as it is poised to do later this month, then what? Will doctors be ordered to provide care to Medicare & Medicaid patients or go to jail? Right now the House version of health care destruction includes jail time for those of us who don't purchase insurance, what would stop the feds from jailing doctors who refuse to see patients?
When does the body politic come back into balance? Right now the statists and their bureaucrats in office are running roughshod over freedom and laughing about it.

Mayo's position is:
"While encouraged by the Senate bill, Mayo Clinic will neither endorse nor oppose
entire bills in the House or Senate, but will continue to point out provisions that we
think move the country toward patientÂ]centered health care goals."
The MC is more or less supporting moves in the right direction, and opposing moves in the wrong direction. Examples:
"Mayo Clinic supports the proposed insurance exchange model based on the Office of Personnel Management's Federal Employees Health Benefit Plan (FEHBP). This system will improve access to insurance, make reforms to the current insurance system that eliminate preÂ]existing condition exclusions and create an individual mandate where individuals can purchase private insurance in various ways. We also believe that the government should help people pay for insurance premiums through sliding scale subsidies as needed."
"Expanding this (Medicare) system to persons 55 to 64 years old would ultimately hurt patients by accelerating the financial ruin of hospitals and doctors across the country. A majority of Medicare providers currently suffer great financial loss under the program. Mayo Clinic alone lost $840 million last year under Medicare. As a result of these types of losses, a growing number of providers have begun to limit the number of Medicare patients in their practices. Despite these provider losses, Medicare has not curbed overall spending, especially after adjusting for benefits covered and the cost shift from Medicare to private insurance. This is clearly an unsustainable model, and one that would be disastrous for our nationÂfs hospitals, doctors and eventually our patients if expanded to even more beneficiaries."
