Primaries, Polls
— Dave in Texas

Primary votes in Colorado, Connecticut and Minnesota today with a runoff in Georgia. I'll try me a run down:

Georgia: Former SecState and Palin-endorsed Karen Handel in a runoff against former Rep. and Newt-endorsed Nathan Deal. Yesterday's Landmark poll showed Deal with a 2 point lead, and early results (55% reporting) show the same, 51%-49%. Winner faces Former GA Gov. Roy Barnes in November.

Connecticut: No surprises in the Senate races, Linda McMahon outdistancing her opponents and will take on Vietnam Veteran Syd Blumenthal for the Senate seat vacated by Christopher Bankshot Dodds (hey, at least he paid the taxes on his yacht. And the cleaning charges). The governor's race though is still a fight, between noted centrist Ned Lamont and former Stamford mayor Dan Malloy in the Dem race, and Republicans Tom Foley and Lt. Gov Mike Fedele.

Minnesota: Dayton leading big against the other two Dems in the Governor field. Any one of them can beat Horner.

Colorado: No results I can find yet. Incumbent Dem Michael Bennet holds a slight edge (3 pts) over challenger Andrew Romanoff in the Senate primary, and in the Republican race Lt. Gov. Jane Norton against Jim DeMint endorsed Ken Buck. Norton had a 2pt edge in yesterday's PPP. In the Governor's race, Republicans McInnis and Maes are virtually tied, one of them will face unchallenged Dem Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, whose name is so goofy I almost want to pull for him.

Almost I said.

5 Our tiny rural county in GA had good turn-out for the runoff. I'm glad folks are staying interested/focused. I really didn't have a strong preference btwn gov candidates, except that Palin endorsed one and Huckaby (ew!) endorsed the other. Deal better not be a squish.

8 Huckabee put his "seal of approval" on Deal.

We have just enough libtards (actually more than enough) to elect Roy Barnes again.  He came in after Zell Miller left office and flatlined.  Just what we need again.

I hope Karen Handel can pull this off.

12 During the primaries, for the first time in Georgia history, more Republicans than Democrats turned out to the polls.  By something like 225,000.

So even if Deal beats Handel, I don't think Roy "please, please, give me one more chance not to fuck things up" Barnes can win.  And Barnes treated Barky last week like he was radioactive.  Heh.

Historically, when there was major crossover voting in off-year primary elections, it was generally the result of a machine boss from one city trading favors with a machine boss from another, e.g. the Democrat boss of Jersey City trading horses with the Republican boss of Atlantic City.

The Colorado governor election exemplifies what is meant by a political class, imo.  GOP dirtbags and a Dem idiot ideologue who will turn Colorado into Mexico North.  The CO GOP could have nominated a cat and won against Hickenlooper.  Tancredo will be blamed for causing losing the election but the truth is the GOP didn't have a viable candidate.

In CO I hope Michael Bennet (D) wins over Romanoff(D).  (left and lefter)

Bennet has been a rubber stamp for the Pelosi/Reid agenda.  He voted FOR tax-payer funded "heath care reform" and everything else.

Bennet is running a campaign on "cleaning up Washington"  Hilarious. Maybe the winner on the R side will be smart enough to point out the hypocrisy?

The bad news is that Bennet has all $orts of big-democrat machine money behind him.

I expect Roy Barnes will go negative big time to try and depress Deal supporters in the general election but that won't do squat.  The donk base will be demoralized by Obama's continuing failure to produce hope and change.  Conversely, the Republicans and ravening hordes of Tea Partiers  are going to turn out big this November and vote against anything with a party affilation of 'D'.

67 McMahon will get crushed in the general. She spent 18 million dollars to get 70000 votes and that isn't even 50%. Against 2 guys that didn't spend a dime on advertising. The Republicans endorsed basically whoever would self finance for the races here in Connecticut and it isn't going to play in the general. It killed Ned Lamont. The only real shots I would give the Rs come November is Dan Dibecella and Janet Peckinpaugh for the House and Dean for State AG. Everyone else is toast.

68 Romanoff concedes in the Dems' primary for Senate; Norton concedes in the Republican to Buck; 51 to 48 Buck over Norton.

Maes/McInnis still too close to call- less than .6% separating the two- just over 2400 votes out of 345k cast.  VERY tight race; GOP is trying to entice REMAX owner/founder Dave Liniger to enter race for the GOP to counter Tancredo, who went from GOP to 3d party.  Trouble is, Maes would have to lose, and McInnis step aside for it to work.  Neither is likely.

don't know if you guys have discussed this.  A lib/dem told me about it in the context of "the republicans destroyed the economy knowing a dem would win, BO, and they think people won't remember when BO is up for re election, but they will, you'll see, they will and you should read the Stockman Op Ed where he lets the secret out for everyone to see and know".

So marketwatch picked it up and tomorrow it will be the topic of discussion?

Posted by: curious at August 11, 2010 12:21 AM (p302b)

73 @ curious

The Democrats are having a predictable CYA moment as the Bush tax cuts expire. Funny, all this talk about an economic apocalypse while they raise taxes on the investors, demagogue Wall St., invoke class warfare and send Michelle Obama on a lavish, taxpayer funded vacation in Spain. Stockman blames Repuublicans for not matching tax cuts with spending cuts. So when have the Democrats? He turns a pretty phrase about vulgar Keynesianism,  but Republicans haven't been saying the stimulus would work  if only we spent more. "Former Federal Reserve Board vice chairman, Alan S. Blinder has called for ending the tax break for the top brackets for at least two years — a savings of $75 billion over two years — and using that money not to reduce the deficit but to pay for unemployment insurance and food stamp benefits." Reagan and both Bushes put together couldn't match the Obama deficits. $75 billion over  two years?!! That might sound nice if we weren't in the hole $1.34 trillion in 2011, plus now people will have to cough up some dough for mandatory healthcare. The economy cannot rebound  from that.  It's ridiculous to blame the GOP for destroying the economy when the housing market interference that caused the 2008 financial crisis was from Democrats, Wall  St.  overwhelmingly contributes to Democrats and the Democrats won all three branches of government  in 2008. Does this idiot think this was the  GOP's plan?

74 Stockman also called Paulson, Bernanke and Geithner Republicans, which is weird. Paulson was a Republican appointment, but that's not unusual for a lame duck president to appoint someone from the opposite party.

Was this the race where bill clinton backed one guy and BO backed the other?

If so who prevailed?

Bennet did win, and he was backed by Obama.

76 I'm not sure Penry hasn't at least slightly damaged his rep with the way he ran the Norton campaign.  I'm hearing a LOT of "I'll never vote for Norton after the campaign she ran," I'm wondering how much of that will slop over on to Penry.

Just something to note - some of the same people are involved in McInnis's campaign that are involved in Buck's campaign.  I'm wondering if Penry didn't take the position with Norton's campaign because of that.
