Primary Night
— Ace

Miller and Hayworth are not expected to win, but we can hope. Results at top of page.

And if you're an Arizona resident, yeah, pull the lever for Hayworth. You're not electing a flight commander, you're electing a Senator.

And definitely pull for Miller and pull hard. Then go get your kids, dress them up in Groucho glasses and mustaches, fake them up some ID and have them vote seven or eight times too. No one checks; it's the Democratic way!

Some stuff at Hot Air.

Below, John McCain shows how he won another Republican Primary despite being a closet Democrat (and a closet Democrat in much the same way Liberace was a closet pianist).

Video funny thanks to rdbrewer.

Florida, Florida, Florida: McCollum and Scott neck-and-neck for gubernatorial nomination, and a ridiculously close three-way race in FL-24.

Meeks won, so that's good for Rubio.

Bang...? Oh dear. Jim Geraghty writes on Twitter:

In the Fla. GOP Senate primary in Florida,787K votes cast; in the Dem primary, 489K votes cast.

Now, the GOP Senate race was all but uncontested. (A pair of not-very-serious candidates will collect 15% between them.)

And the Dem Senate race was contested.

There is a big contested gubernatorial race at the top of the ballot, so that brings out the GOP, but... okay, fine, so both parties had a reason to vote in the primaries; why does the GOP enjoy a nearly 45% edge in turnout in a 50/50 state?

Neck and Neck and Neck: FL-24 GOP Primary: 88% reporting Adams 31 Diebel 29 MIller 27. Nathan Wurzel.

97 #88 Rubio will continue raising $$ like a rockstar. Meek got a boost from Obama, and will get more $$ from Democrats who are watching Crist waffling like a moron back and forth. I just want people to start focusing on, as ace says, the NEXT most vulnerable seats. and those are the current Dem Tossups (if the Connecticut newspapers are already writing off Blummy, by the way, its worse for him than even tossup status at this point). THOSE seats are: WA,CA,NV,CO,IL,WI,CT. PA,DE,AR,IN,ND are solidifying for the GOP. All the "vulnerable GOP" seats are solidifying now for the GOP. These numbers 7 weeks ahead, rather than them getting "closer" indicate those states are gelling under ONE trendline, not waffling anymore.

Florida Senate is a 2 way race. Meek was at 25% 4 months ago and now he is at 17% and that's with the knowledge he was likely to win the Dem nomination and all the hype of the primary race. The Dems flocked to him, the ones that bothered to vote, in the primary but they will slowly spin off to Crist now as the only liberal with a shot at victory.

Saw a guy with a booth saying "stop obamacare!" he was collecting voter registrations for Republicans in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. I asked him how many new voters has he gotten this week. Eh, five or six. I told him 5 or 6 sucks since its supposed to be a Republican county. He then yelled at me that I wasnt fully listening to him- "five or six HUNDRED you goof! I have registered about THREE THOUSAND new voters for the GOP in the last eight weeks." He told me he doesn't count the number of Dem and Indie registrants- he just hands them the forms and the stuff they need to send it in. "About a dozen or so a week for them". NO MA'AM, NO MORE.

See, CAC, this is where you make your mistake and what I have been trying to say for quite some time now.  In the end elections, believe it or not, are not a numbers game.  They hinge on the composition of electorates (this is why, for example, CA's basically fucked) and the personalities of specific candidates.  "Trendlines", even in wave elections and positive environments, only go so far; if enough Florida voters still really like their governor, then he's got a great shot at being the next senator from the state no matter how strong the Republican wave is, or even how much of a carrot-skinned idiot he is.  Waves are good for a boost but only that; the core of every race is still who the candidate is and what the electorate looks like.  That means all the "toss-up" states you mention are doable, but tough sells (and it's totally unrealistic to consider CT a "tossup" unless McMahon starts tying Blumenthal in polls; MoE is not going to save a Republican in a state that blue).

Optimism's good; lying to ourselves will only lead to some pretty huge letdowns.

Since we're talking about the Senate and long shots/underdogs, does anyone know the status of the Oregon race?  Wyden is heavily favored, but (1) last I saw, his reelect numbers were at 50 or lower; and (2) Oregon isn't quite as leftist as everyone thinks; the Portland area is, but the state overall tends to be about even in competitive years.  (OTOH, Alaska and Arizona aren't nearly as far right as everyone thinks, either, which is why Murkowski and McCain can win in those states).

Also, is there any move toward putting up a fight against Gillibrand?  Not only is she vulnerable, being a newcomer and unelected, but there's an outside chance that if she's in trouble, enough people might not split the ticket to make Chuckie the Evil Doll  Schumer have to fight for his life in a GOP-tilted electorate.

They hinge on the composition of electorates (this is why, for example, CA's basically fucked) and the personalities of specific candidates. I think you have it backwards. In a wave election "change" is on the ballot in every election and personal attributes of candidates count for a meager 10% of voter decision. Composition of electorate (partisan split) of course counts but when 70% of independents break one way and only one party mobs-up to run riot funky shit can happen. The stuff you're saying, "this is 435 individual races," is actually never really true (there is a decent correlation with national voter sentiment) but that really goes out the window in a change/wave election. You know how I know? I fuckin' said "these are 435 individual races" in 2006 and 2008 a bunch of times (never believing it, but holding out hope). It's like playing craps with biased dice. The dice rolls are all "indpendent" but they're going to cluster towards the same results.

149 TWBTUS EEYORE! No, I get the concern. And this is better than the idiots screaming "oh no but everything will just fall apart." You are right about WHO turns out. But thats part of the trendlines to. The Democrats ARENT. Conservatives are. California is a huge, huge hurtle. But you really need to hear what I have heard, in working class Dem districts, about Boxer. Brown. Even Obama. If the Democratic coalition cracks here, which it most definately is along the I-5 LA/OC Dem band, the I-10 Inland Empire working classs hispanic bloc, and the central valley, the Democrat's structural advantage begins to break down. We have REASONS to be excited, and we should capitalize on them and look ahead like we will win. The last few undecideds just look at who has the most momentum, who has the biggest appeal, and they jump on the bandwagon. We saw it work for Obama in 2008. Reagan in 1980. Brown in 2010. You promote the impression that we are WINNING, its a self fulfilling prophesy IF we are willing to do the ground work. A lot easier to do that if you think your candidate will win.

Lots of people may be voting locally for some Republican they don't really know, but in their minds they are going to be voting against Obama. And that is good news.

177 I don't think the responses will be linear this year. For every one unit of GOP or non-DEM effort there will be a multiplied outcome. The GOP has the wind at its back. The DEM Party has the wind in their face. That's why if you vote, well, that's groovy, but if you vote and do even a little bit more, your efforts become much more significant.

Hi folks.

Rubio is pretty good in front of a camera.  I know its a softball interview, but still.  The Tan Man really has no cards left to play.  He needs Dim support, and alot of it, so it's going to be hard for him to run as a credible centrist.  Oh yeah, he's also an obvious scumbag and opportunist.

Size matters, pal.  When you go bankrupt can you drag the whole fucking country with you?  Didn't think so.  Nice try.

Posted by: California at August 24, 2010 05:23 PM (xMSXs)

212 The stuff you're saying, "this is 435 individual races," is actually never really true (there is a decent correlation with national voter sentiment) but that really goes out the window in a change/wave election.

But it doesn't, really.  The ODDS get a lot better across the board for the beneficiary of a wave election, which is why seats in a whole bunch of dark-blue states are up for grabs in the first place.  The political center has shifted to the right, and that will hurt the Democrats everywhere, definitely.  But if the candidate is a dud, no wave can save him or her; while if the candidate is strong enough he or she can survive and even thrive in hostile environments.

Connecticut's a great example of this.  In any other year it wouldn't be on anyone's radar; the wave has made it a possible GOP pickup.  But who is on the ticket still makes all the difference.  Chris Dodd was a likely loser as the Dem nominee in CT (I believe that if he'd stayed on the ticket, he'd be trailing by 20 points by now), but "Iron Dick" Blumenthal, who at least until the Vietnam stuff came out was probably the most popular Democrat in a very Democratic state, is (I believe) the significant favorite.

Florida, on the other hand, would be a solid GOP hold in this environment if Crist hadn't decided to blow everything up.  Asshole that he is, leftist tool that he is, as likely to caucus with the Dems as he is, he's still just popular enough in Florida that a three-way race with him as the independent becomes a giant question mark.  I think Rubio wins but it will go all the way to Election Day.  (The only obvious outcome here is that Meek loses.)

Illinois would probably be a more obvious GOP pickup if the nominee were someone Republicans could get excited about, instead of Mark Kirk.  Delaware seems to be an easy GOP pickup unless Christine O'Donnell upsets Mike Castle in the primary (it could very well happen), in which case the general election against Coons becomes much less clear.  And so on.

The identity of the candidate, and the makeup of the electorate, are the foundations of every election.  Because of that, all politics truly are local.  National waves just help to push things in one direction or another, but whether or not they're strong enough to make the difference always depends on who's riding the wave, and where they're coming ashore.

248 266 It almost looks like something sneaky is going on in AZ.  Everyone is chattering about "where are the results"....I mean not even a dribble?

Skulduggery happens.

249 Did you think I really wanted a 12-inch McCain?

251 Who the hell is Jim Deakin?

Posted by: Rocks at August 24, 2010 07:20 PM (ivAmM)

252 I guess BO has a lot of sway since Meeks won and then he'll win the election cause the vote will be split among the other two...ugh the dems always do this.

First, BO was drawn kicking and screaming to endorsing Meek.  I would still look to Meek suffering from some sort of scandal.

Second, Meek cannot win.  Rubio's polling very well, Crist has an outside shot, but Meek can't win a 3-way race.

The Dems desperately want Meek out of the way.

253 272 Who the hell is Jim Deakin?

I have no idea? but, he is getting 10 % of the vote so far. WTF??

256 274 272 Who the hell is Jim Deakin?

I have no idea? but, he is getting 10 % of the vote so far. WTF??

That is great news.  He is a citizen politician, owns his own business and is a true conservative.  I watched two of the debates and he was there for both of them.  The guy is awesome.

Posted by: imtoast at August 24, 2010 07:32 PM (lJUxf)

257 the MFM and You People have no idea of what's coming in FLA;  Red Wave

Rubio will crush Orange Boy and Meeks;

Scott will multi-crush Alex Butter-Face Sink

( Sink looks and sounds like your third grade teacher )

so relax, forChrist'sSake, and enjoy the show

258 CNN called it already like ten minutes ago for McShame

Posted by: curious at August 24, 2010 07:38 PM (p302b)

259 Sabato now lying on twitter that Palin endorsed McCollum and that Scott beat her. LOL She did not endorse in that race.

Posted by: Dan at August 24, 2010 10:59 PM (1jzSs)

Sabato is usually good but sometimes steps on his dick; McCollum was the dipwad who ran a terrible campaign against Bill Nelson and allowed that Empty Suit to win a Senate seat.  He was like Crist before Orange Boy left the fold:  One of the Repub estab boys who trailed in Jeb Bush's wake

Scott needs some polish, but will demolish Sink.  She sounds retarded ( with apologies to retards )

260 CNN called it already like ten minutes ago for McShame

Posted by: curious at August 24, 2010 11:38 PM (p302b)

yeah but his numbers went down slightly. He has it locked up but if he goes down near 50% against the other 2 it's going to be pretty embarrassing. Especially after spending 20 million bucks.

261 Is Cindy McShame deliberately trying to look like Barbara Bush?

Posted by: curious at August 24, 2010 07:44 PM (p302b)

262 My Friends, I can assure you that I'll be as Mavericky non-Maverick as you imagine I need to be. But for all of you concerned about amnesty, illegal immigration, and sovereignty, let me quote my Good Friend, Lindsey, and say, "You bigots can shut up now." I'll be "regularizing" everyone and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

Posted by: Maverick McMaverick at August 24, 2010 07:46 PM (swuwV)

263 I'm glad I don't live in AZ they didn't really have a choice.  It is a shame that no one wants to challenge these incumbents.

Posted by: curious at August 24, 2010 07:53 PM (p302b)

266 For the third time, McCain gets the primary win while I vote for the other guy. Pisses me off that I have to vote mavericky in the general election. On the plus side, Jan Brewer gets 80 some % in her primary race, so we've got that going for us.

Posted by: Karl Rove at August 24, 2010 08:10 PM (EL+OC)

269

I always thought JD looked like a dolphin, especially when he was fat.

But that doesn't mean he isn't the best man for the job.

McCain should have resigned.  Someone pointed out earlier today that it seems like the more unreliable they are, the longer they fight to stay in DC.

Posted by: rdbrewer at August 24, 2010 08:27 PM (X+sda)

270 You all notice that the guy huckabee and romney supported in florida LOST to Rick Scott, while Pam Bondi and Paul Gosar who both ran in competitive races are looking very good? Bondi just won, and Gosar is up 10 pts with 57% in. Not to mention McCain and West whose races were never really in question. Miller could be the BIG BONUS if he can pull a big upset!

Posted by: Dan at August 24, 2010 08:31 PM (1jzSs)

271 Fuck.  Can I just say that I strongly dislike McCain.  G-d.

People are so fucking stupid.

G-d help us.

278 McCain won because Hayworth is a buffoon and a blowhard and the stupid infomercial did him in. No mystery here. Put a credible candidate against McCain and he would have been toast.

Posted by: jason at August 24, 2010 08:51 PM (Q7Qxx)

279 Sorry folks, but if I'd been an Arid-zone voter I'd have held my nose and voted for McCain.  Hayworth just wasn't good enough.

Posted by: JEM at August 24, 2010 08:52 PM (o+SC1)

280 Frick. Six more years of McCain. Hayworth rubs me the wrong way (ew that sounds gross), but I voted for him anyway because I thought he would be easier to control. There's no way to keep McCain in line. He'll go back to his old ways and he won't give a rip how pissed we are when he does something we don't want, and it won't matter to him how many calls and emails we send. Oh well. I'm just complaining tonight, but I'll shut up and I'll pull the lever for him in November because he's still better than a Dem. I'm curious to see the final voter turnout numbers for today. If it was low for Republicans I'll be pissed.

281 The polls closed an hour ago but nothing yet in AK

Posted by: Rocks at August 24, 2010 08:56 PM (ivAmM)

282 Posted by: JEM at August 25, 2010 12:52 AM (o+SC1) Yeah, cause fucktard mcCain was a man of ethics, principles and oh wait... He's a shameless flip-flopper who fucking gave us Obama and has attacked every fucking Republican viciously and bitterly his entire career. That little gremlin fuck bought off Arizona voters with $20 million. How disgusting and sad. That dancing fucking poodle would have been better than McCain. Now I have to suck it up again and support that villainous assmaggot another election season knowing that he will give the GOP a majority but vote against not only the GOP but every damned lie he told this primary.

Posted by: ChicagoJedi at August 24, 2010 08:58 PM (WZFkG)

283 From Mccain's victory speech tonight:

"No one is satisfied with the current condition of our country.”

“I am convinced that Republicans will win in November and we will regain our majorities in both the Senate and the House!”

“We will stop the out-of-control spending and tax increases, and repeal and replace Obamacare!”

Whatever....

296 It's official...

My fellow Arizona Republicans are a bunch of fucking gullible fucking bots.

Thanks, my fellow Arizonans!  Thanks very much for re-electing, once again, the very man that has been the reason for the downfall of conservatism in the Republican party, you stupid fucking fucks.

FUCK YOU VERY MUCH!

(Here's looking at you 'bamapachyderm' and equivalent dumb bints.)

298 So when Juan McShamnesty once again drafts amnesty, cap and trade, facilitates raises in taxes that affect small businesses, (Read: destruction of jobs wholesale), and everything else you would normally depend on the Democrats for, who shall we blame?

FUCK you, you stupid fucking FUCK voters.

300 Hey guess what, bamapachyderm?  I won't vote for this fuck in November.  Congratulations.  I would prefer, once again, to have a democrat lead us down the fucking shitter than to have Juan McShamnesty lead the way.  Yes, people need to learn the lesson.

Why can't we get a decent candidate?  This shit is getting annoying after fucking SIX YEARS.

Posted by: Obviously at August 24, 2010 11:05 PM (qqal2)

301 You know - with the amount of flip-flopping McMaverick did to fool enough AZ primary voters this season it seems to me he owes Mitt "Flipper" Romney a pretty fucking huge apology.
