I imagine if you did a study on the 10's of thousands of kids who drop out of college each year and the one's that stay in school regarding their alcohol and drug use and depression you would find it greater than that in the military.

PTSD not so much, going into battle is different than finding out you're out of beer, the bongs empty and mom and dad's check is late.

The military is dangerous work, it's not for everybody and everybody knows that, including 18 YO recruits.

31 The real question is how to they measure "mental illness". I know when I was hired we took a test that measured this kind of stuff. Eventually they moved to the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) which I had to attend a class on when I was going up for my SRO license.

What these tests measure is not "illness" per se but where and by how far the taker deviates from the standard for the population. Any time you get a group of people who do not routinely interact with the "standard population" you get drift.

So if you give the test to a bunch of military who have spent the last 9 months in the sandbox they will score significantly different from the standard population. The Psychiatrist who was teaching our class explained this when he said he first started administering the tests for ex-Navy submarine personnel a great many of them were showing up as "deviant" which then called for a local interview. After interviewing a few of them he immediately saw what was happening.

I think he even wrote a paper on it.

89 Not really -- the most "conservative" profs we had were in mil science, philosophy, business, education, and English.  There was one unit B math teacher (good friend of mine) but he didn't last more than a year.  Of those, the English department chair was probably the most conservative, hard core person on campus, but only the mil science guy is left -- the rest have either retired or gone to smaller colleges (the college here is desperately trying to remake itself into Berkley or something), or in the case of two of my good buddies and fellow English profs -- dead.  They were/are pretty much frustrated and disgusted with the way things are going in academia; it was really getting stressful those last couple of years (to that I can attest, talking about working in an unfriendly environment, had to watch what you said all the time).  It's a shame: they were all really good profs (and they had my back...which as soon as they left had a knife sticking out of it).

I am one of those student to soldiers that you identified as being  a victim of predatory recruiters. 
I Joined the military in the reserves at the age of 17 and after graduating high school and 1 semester of college, I transferred to active duty and served both in peacetime as well as in war time.
Of all the sacrifices I have made for my country and the sacrifices of my brethren I see you cheapen them by likening them to the machinations of a sexual predator at first, made me want to do egregious violence to your person.  Then I thought about it.
Soldiers do not aspire to use violence for petty things such as silencing 1st amendment rights.  Nor do they take countenance in the verbal diarrhea of a self inflated pseudo intellectual such as yourself.
Service members today must endure the slurs brought on by people such as yourself, who know nothing of service beyond self, (Keep in mind that service COSTS you something, which I don't think you have it in you to give. You're not that deep.) or sacrifice beyond material goods. I can only applaud them for their choice in life and wish them success in every endeavor.   You? not so much.
