— Purple Avenger Buy the ticket, take the ride -- HST
A federal jury in Knoxville last week convicted David Kernell, 22, of two charges in connection with the 2008 episode...Its a hard lesson for some on the left to learn that actions can have real world consequences. While I doubt this young man will get slammed with 20 years, two or three would not be out of the question. Clearly, he has to be given something substantial as a deterrent to those on the right who might attempt the same sort of thing against a Democrat candidate in the future....Kernell was found guilty of computer fraud - a misdemeanor subject to a prison term of up to one year -- and obstruction of justice, which carries a maximum 20-year sentence...

I would argue that the judge should go for the maximum sentence. This isn't a case of someone hacking a celebrity's email account - this "plumber" was attempting to influence the electoral process by illegal means. If we care at all about the sanctity of elections we should be looking to to punish exactly these sort of actions harshly.

Riiiiiiiiiight..........
He'll get a slap on the wrist and this whole thing will be forgotten. But should somone on the right ever do anything even close to this, it's the death penalty for them.

Indeed....I am thinking he is going to be a stealth commutation within a year though. Kid is connected via family and after the media gets a useful bout of amnesia he'll walk ala Billy Ayers.

Regardless of the punishment, I'm satisfied with him being convicted of a felony. It means, if nothing else, that he won't be able to vote anymore.
And by this, I mean: It'll cost him a good $20 in an untraceable Visa Gift Card to get a hobo from out-of-town to do it for him now.

I agree. The reason he did not cop a plea is they wouldn't bargain down to below a felony.
However, he will probably get 5 years probation and a couple of years in the slammer. That couple of years will be reduced by time served and he will be eligible for parole in 6 months.

THis kid got a "guilty" verdict.
Ouch.
Even if he can vote, he can never own a gun (unless rights are restored), and a felony will have to be disclosed on everything. A felony, with or without time served, is a harsh punishment (and well-deserved here).
But we DID hear about it, he WAS a Democrat ally, and he DID get punished. Kinda restores a little bit of faith in the system.

Absolutely. But, they don't even seem concerned with preserving the appearance, either. It's like the Porkulus and the health scare; the left didn't even try to hide how underhanded and slimy they were being. They were proud of not letting anyone read the bills before voting on them - even to the point of Nazi Lugosi and her infamous, "We have to pass the bill so that you can see what's in it."

Now, if this was a stalwart Young Republican kid with Tom Delay for President bumper stix on his gun-rack equipped SUV who was hacking into Obamas emails or Pelosis or Henry Waxman's emails, the dude would get at least a few days or weeks in the County slam.
I personally would give the kid 100 days in County jail. Not hard time, but enough to get his ass kicked by a few convicts and make him think twice before fucking up innocent people's lives for no other reason than he hates their politics.

So businesses such as Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds can't even make & sell coffee! People are scrambling for bottled water; cleaning out the supermarket shelves.
Stores are jacking up their prices (up to $5/bottle) and people are going nuts. Marsha Coakley, our stupid AG, said to call and report water price gougers. A caller on the radio said he's gonna report a place who selling bottled water for $5 -- Fenway Park!

OT: The China Crash may happen sooner than I expected. If so, China may use their huge stockpile of T-Bills as leverage (or just dump them for cash). Bad news for us.
Other dark clouds:
1. A probable Greek default. (Austerity program? The Greeks? Yeah-huh.)
2. Portugal and Spain are teetering, and if the bond market stays sour, they'll fall over the brink right along with Greece.
3. California will go broke sometime this summer. They already are broke, but they won't be able to pretend any more. L.A. will either declare bankruptcy or get an "emergency loan" any day now, with San Diego and a lot of smaller cities close behind.
4. The oil spill in the Gulf may strangle the recovery a-borning, at least in the southern tier of states. And it's likely to spike any renewed drilling efforts any time soon. Get ready for $5/gallon gas.
A double-dip recession might be the best we can hope for in the coming year.
Happy Monday!

Monty, I was already drinking at work. I am not going to start doing drugs too.
Hard assets are king for awhile, kids.
For what it's worth, I think we might just eke out a bit of growth this year. Not much, but a little -- unless California totally shits the bed, in which case all bets are off.
Be aware: I'm a notorious pessimist about the economy. You can read Kudlow if you want a "don't worry, be happy" take on things. (Or you can read Roubini if you want a "we're all going to be eating our own dead" view that's even more pessimistic than mine.)
I'd worry more about the T-Bills that China is holding if they were denominated in some other currency, but they're demoninated in dollars, so I'm not sweating it too much just yet. And the Chinese are still maintaing a pretty close peg between the yuan and the dollar (though I think they're going to be forced to float the yuan if the crash happens -- they live and die by exports, and a dollar-peg is going to kill them if their economy goes south).

Watch their charges be reduced to some BS like lying to an agent. Personally I think that lying to federal agents should carry no more punishment than the crime they were allegedly lying about, and only if they are convicted of the original crime.
if that meant this douche walks, then so be it. They should have charged him with something besides the damn misdemeanor.

The EPA site said you could throw them away with normal trash.
As for burnout; I replaced the incandescents in the two table lamps that are next to out chairs in the living room. Mine is on almost all day long. Generally from about 5 am to 9 pm. The incandescents were lasting between one and two months.
The CFL in my lamp that I first replaced burnt out at 2.5 years of that kind of use.

I think it's important to mention that the LEO in question (Art Roderick) was killed by Weaver's friend Kevin Harris after Sam Weaver (14) and Harris witnessed DUSM Roderick kill the family dog. Roderick identified himself to Weaver, but Sam and Kevin didn't know who the man in cammo was when they witnessed the dog's death. Sam was also killed in that firefight (shot in the back). A sniper killed Mrs. Weaver when she stood at the door of her home with a baby in her arms!
Posted by: bonhomme at May 03, 2010 01:35 PM (jvG2F)
@250: "What about the family of the law enforcement officer that was killed first by Weaver's group"
One of the group who were trying to set up an ambush point? One of the group that threw rocks at Weaver's house? One of the group, who - when confronted - swore at Weaver? One of the group that blew away Samuel Weaver, age 14?
Fuck him sideways. If they follow proper arrest procedures, I've got their back, but if they want to play gangsta commando, they've got it coming.

With that, I have seen the error of my ways. Should your family ever experience the same tender minstrations of the Feds that the Weaver family experienced, I'll be sure to praise the officers to the skies. In your honor, of course.
