16 This state employee is taking a 3% pay cut on 7/1 combined with a 2 year pay freeze.  I already pay 25% of my medical insurance (at least in the range compared  to the private sector).  My pension plan (which I expect will bust before I am eligible to retire) requires me to work 30 years and have an age + years of service of 89 or more to get the full amount, which is 50% of my last three years' average with an annual COLA of 1/2 the change in CPI.

Not all states are profligate with the pay and retirement benefits.

Saw a documentary some years back about the vast salaries of many school maintenance people - low level management, I think in NJ. Copious overtime brought in $150,000 per annum for some, and that was back in ca. 1990 I think. Enormous offices, lots of excellent plunder like large houses and large boats.

Actually, doctors aren't even lucky enough to have pay freezes.  Their medicare and medicaid reimbursements go down just about every single year.  Between their high overhead and reduced reimbursement, it's not going to be worth the trouble and expense to go into medicine.  Traditionally in America, the best and the brightest used to go to medical school.  Now not so much.  The quality of residents has noticeably declined over the years since I first became a nurse.  Obamacare is going to make this trend even more of a downward spiral.  People have no idea how much axcess to and quality of health care in America will be once Obamacare is in place.

You see it in the "smoothing" nonsense that states are using to hide the losses their pension funds have taken in the past couple of years, conbined with completely unrealistic returns on investments (8% assumed, when in reality the return rate is more like 5-6%). They're also assuming a completely unrealistic rate of growth going forward. The tech-boom of the 1990's isn't likely to be repeated, though, and if it is, it'll probably be in India and not here. Our economy will grow, but at a much slower pace than we're used to: probably in the 3-5% range for several years. This means a higher unemployment rate, because not enough new jobs will be created for the bigger population. I suspect that, absent any fundamental changes in our government, this situation may well be a permanent feature for the next thirty to fifty years (or until the huge Boomer demographic has mostly passed away).

IL is ready to go tits up, and the stupid education combine can't seem to figure it out (so far the teachers here, have, to the best of my knowledge, avoided some of the issues other public service employees have already gotten a taste of).  As of now, they are laying off or reducing the hours of other public employees around here to help make up some of the cost (yeah, in this area they are firing cops to keep the teachers bankrolled; that's going to end well).  As for the other state employees -- well, they've been having issues getting paid for the past three years.  Same thing: laying off or reducing the payroll for one state  department to make payroll for another.  I'm not really understanding the intelligence of that move -- maybe to get them all falling all over themselves to get some of that sweet, sweet taxpayer's stash.

I'm to the point that I don't give a shit anymore -- let it all fall down.  If we have to we can defend ourselves, and if we have to we can educate our kids ourselves -- it would be tough, but wth.  (and it would be great if I could get on as a scab teacher next year -- pick up some extra cash doing that, sweet).

Many do not like the curriculum either, but they have to teach it. Many pay $600 or more per month for their family insurance coverage. It is not the sweet deal it may be in other places.
Texas education budgets are hurting with the tax base shrinking in connection to the housing market. Many teachers here are teaching bigger classes or more classes because the schools can't hire additional teachers. They may not be thrilled, but they understand times are tough and they are dealing with it.
At the same time, of course I do not go along with the thug unions demanding more and more while their state budget is going down the drain. That is what shut down International Harvester years ago and cost thousands of jobs.
