WASHINGTON—Rep. Charles Rangel is pleading for mercy after the House ethics committee earlier this week found him guilty of 11 violations of House rules. The panel is meeting at noon Thursday to decide on a punishment."There can be no excuse for my acts of omission. I've failed in carrying out my responsibilities. I made numerous mistakes,'' Mr. Rangel said in remarks prepared for delivery at Thursday's hearing before the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct.
If all they can realistically do is reprimand or censure him, what the hell kind of mercy is he cryin for, a hug?

What is the mercy he wants? It's about this. As Chairman, or ranking minority member, of an important committee like Ways and Means a member gets a much bigger budget and staff then other House members. He also gets a bigger, and choicer, office.
The mercy he wants is to have a penalty that doesn't preclude him from being ranking member on Ways and Means and keeping his perks. A reprimand would do this, a censure would not.
Members of Congress who have been censured are required to give up any committee chairs they hold, but they are not removed from their elected position.
Rangel is 80. Even if he lives another 20 years he knows the only way he get's a chance at a significant chairmanship if the Dems retake the House is to keep it now as ranking member. 80 some odd year old guys with censure on their record get platitudes and shuffled to the back bench.

The current DOJ is totally corrupted and politicized, and the American media is in on the cover-up. With a Republican President, any hint of impropriety in the DOJ resulted in multiple investigations by the Democrat Congress, lovingly covered and re-covered every day by the media. Like the Iraelis say, all you have to do to know what the Arabs are up to is listen to what they are accusing us of doing.
Rangel, and the disparate treatment of his crimes by the DOJ and in the media, needs to be front and center in the Republican play-book for a long, long time.

I'm pretty sure that Charlie had his hearing aid (he served in Korea, no? makes him like 112 years old) turned down as I saw him woefully nodding in apparent agreement when his fellow Representative was mourning in dirge-like tones.
A bit different when Bonner got kind of fired up about the kind of treatment a regular citizen might expect to receive if she had flouted the IRS for 17 years as the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee did.

I'd like to think though, that at the VERY LEAST Charlie heard at least one minute of that speech before he just said to himself, "Fuck it! I'm Charlie Rangle!"
