Realignment: Young Voters Maturing Early Under Obama, Abandoning Democrats
— Ace

Smells like teen dispirit.

The college vote is up for grabs this year — to an extent that would have seemed unlikely two years ago, when a generation of young people seemed to swoon over Barack Obama.

Though many students are liberals on social issues, the economic reality of a weak job market has taken a toll on their loyalties: far fewer 18- to 29-year-olds now identify themselves as Democrats compared with 2008.

...

Philip Stricker, 21, a biology major who voted for Mr. Obama but says he has not been paying much attention to politics lately, uses a nontechnical term to describe the phenomenon.

“There’s a vibe,” he said on a recent afternoon, while pumping weights at the gym. “Right now it seems like Republicans just care a lot more than Democrats.”

The actual numbers linked are at Pew.

From a 32% advantage to a 14% advantage, and guess what, most of the Democratic ones ain't even voting this year.

As a near-Millennial myself, now 29 years old (well, I will be 29 in November), it heartens me that so many of my Generation Z'ers are seeing the light.

Or, as we now all call "light," we're now seeing the lizzle-brizzle.

6 The thing about young people is that, yes, some of them are as dumb as stumps, but not all of them. And the ones who aren't suddenly realized that they got boned big time. Their futures are so fucked. They are going to live in smaller houses, drive shitty cars and pay taxes until they bleed all because they fell for the Madison Avenue candidate. Plus they are going to borrow obscene amounts of money to go to some middle level college that no one ever heard of, and thanks to the new law, they are going to be stuck paying off their loans until they are 55 years old. Sucks to be them, really.

@25

Support for all Democrats among all demographics is directly correlated to how much they actually have to live in the real world.  Young people just have very little living in the real world.  I mean, college undergrad?  It is THE most favorable ratio of freedom vs. responsibility anyone will ever have, and probably more than anyone should ever have.

Posted by: shillelagh at September 03, 2010 12:14 PM (Oz4Bj)

39 There's an interesting rumor going around it says that "they are going to forgive student debt".....everyone assumes it is their student debt.  I have pointed out to several of my friends that it was very difficult to qualify for cash for clunkers and the measly housing credit of 8 grand which you used on your new home which has now dropped again, was difficult to qualify for also.  Few people were able to use these two programs.  I expect, should they forgive student debt, those whose debt is forgiven will be in another narrow range.

Campaign reform, term limits, get rid of the Fed, Flat tax, get rid of the Energy Commission, Fannie, Freddie, student loans, Obamacare and every other waste of our money...then perhaps we have a slight chance of recovery.

We need a state convention to demand all of this and soon. Anything short of a complete and total demolition and rebuild...gets us the same old results.

Also, be sure to demand lots of money for partying and new clothes. If they balk, inform them that it's better when you spread the wealth around. Tell them that you want to spend some of that money treating your black friends to a movie and if your parents won't help you with that, then they're racists.

110 The think I've found is that the kids who are in college now, and the ones I went to college with (2000-2005) are liberal because they can AFFORD to be.  They grew up with parents who were successful enough to afford to pay for college, to afford a car to give their kids, and to send their kids money every week to spend on booze and drugs.

Now that economic times have become a bit tougher for mom and dad, these kids are starting to see the benefits dry up.  They're starting to see the job prospects that were all but guaranteed them out of college suddenly became a lot more competitive.

Liberalism is easy...until you start running out of money... then you have to start making tough decisions.

144 "Why do people, in all times and places, obey the commands of the government, which always constitutes a small minority of the society?" Etienne de La Boetie, 1550.

Victimized voter guinea pigs have had enough of Obama's administered Milgram Experiment.

Milgram's experiment really had nothing to do with memory, learning, and punishment, of course. It was rather, as he described it in 1974, "a simple experiment Â… to test how much pain an ordinary citizen would inflict on another person simply because he was ordered to by an experimental scientist. Stark authority was pitted against the subjects' strongest moral imperatives against hurting others, and, with the subjects' ears ringing with the screams of the victims, authority won more often than not." Yet, at any point in the proceedings, all any of the teachers had to do was refuse to continue. All any of them had to do was stand up and walk out of the laboratory. It is rather like the situation Etienne de La Boetie describes in his essay on the politics of obedience. Because the ruled always outnumber the ruler, La Boetie wrote, the ruled can free themselves at any time "merely by willing to be free."

And a big FU to James J. Martin's academic conclusion that the general American populace has always been genetically born to serve a master, lacking the gumption to demand Liberty by denying assent to a demanding authoritarian. We wouldn't have had our successful revolution against the Crown if only a handful of Americans were riled. Since the 20th Century, effective civil rights protests began with organized labor; and now the successful local Townhalls and national DC protests turned out combined millions opposing federal Marxist aggressive annihilation of Liberty, Justice and Prosperity.

FDR got lucky enough to be in a time when the GOP was at it's worst branding itself (the GOP of the 30s and 40s make today's look like fucking geniuses) and a time when the world was experimenting w/ socialism and liberalism which would ultimately lead to the 60s and 70s downward spiral that lead to the conservative alignment of the late 60s and the Reagan revolution of the 80s, all the way up to the Republican revolution of the 90s and then Dubya screwed the momentum up w/ "compassionate conservatism" which allowed Dems to lie themselves into office and fuck us all

155 One of the beauties of young voters not having some of the biases that perhaps older voters have is that they're not too impressed by "the other". They could really care less if you're gay, or black, or a woman. It really means nothing. With Obama, they genuinely are color blind. So, while the baby-boomers still get jazzed at having "the black friend", this generation could really give a shit about any of the identity politics. They might say to an older person "who gives a shit that Obama is black." It's really because they think "who gives a shit". He's black, big deal. This actually could hurt if not completely end the age of identity politics and that hurts the left.

163 169,

Exactly. I'm 23 and conservative, and I've been dicking around on conservative blogs since I was 18, so I'm used to the general rage at my age cohort. Granted, a good many people my age are ignorant about a lot of shit, but that's because they're young and have grown up in a education system that emphasizes the -isms, like racism, imperialism, colonialism, etc etc. I've been able to "convert" a lot of people just because of their lack of any substantive historical or political knowledge, but then they come into contact with older Repubs and Cons that basically give them the FOAD because they don't have the line down pat just yet. FFS, give them a chance, and try to encourage that kind of thought process, or there won't be any more conservatives once all you geezers die off.

And the "vibe" kid? He's worth that much anger? Really? Because the fact that he said vibe is more important than the fact that he is questioning the direction that Democrats are taking this country in, which could turn him into a lifelong conservative down the line? Have some fucking perspective.

164 169, if you read HuffPo, Kos or even Daily Beast, these comments are mild by comparison. I find mostly good comments from the regular "morons". I have had enough political discussions with recent college graduates and twenty somethings to realize that many abandoned their deductive reasoning (if they had any) and fell for Obama with the same adore as per-teen and teen girls for Justin Beiber. Obama was never an intellectual sell but an emotional one. 1. vote for a black man and we are no longer racist, 2. vote for the cool, super smart guy that all the media says is incredible who looks, acts and sounds like a President. 3.Vote to end the war, 4. Vote lower the oceans, end global warming. 5. Vote so people around the world will like us again. 6. Vote to make the world more "fair". The far left finally got their George McGovern (without the history of personal courage in WWII or any legislative accomplishment.) American's took a flyer on a guy and were manipulated by the press, gave the dems control and look what they got. Far left, EU type socialism ! Who in the hell can honestly believe that "hope & change" was nothing more than an empty slogan. All things to all people will never work. Obama and Dems were not honest with the public. Many of America's young and younger adults grew up in the 25+ year boom and were clueless about the world. They say many conservatives start life as liberals that are then mugged by reality.

Make conversions by talking about the issues without using labels like "right," "left," "conservative," or "liberal."

When I first got internet I read all kinds of sites not knowing whether they were left or right. I kept gravitating back to what was the right/libertarian ones over time.

Many young people think they're liberal by default. I did. It's what liberals have become is what has changed.

I didn't actually change. Political quizzes I took almost 20 years ago put me as "moderate libertarian."  Same-ish today.

You know what might make an interesting thread.  one that focused on changing a lib to a conservative

My wife voted for Al Gore before we met.  Now she's hard-core, 100%  down-the-line conservative. And it's all because I helped her put 2 and 2 together.

See, she's a traditionalist with conservative values. But in her 20's she was a low-information voter who just picked the cooler, younger guy that the media said was the better pick.

Converting her just took me showing her how her existing values connected with conservative ideology.

Also, I had to walk her through media bias 101. She actually thought that they were straight shooting truth tellers.

Why? Because she's honest and expects others to be. Why wouldn't someone whose job it is to be neutral not behave that way professionally?

She's a smart cookie, but very naive. Or was. Not so much since she ran into my cynical, grumpy self.

I'm currently working on my brother-in-law who voted for Obama. He's a Democrat in the same way someone becomes a Cowboys fan because he grew up in Texas and his dad was a Cowboys fan.

But he has some conservative leanings. So what I do is push all the hot button stuff that gets him worked up. Like pointing out how much gets taken out of his check to the government can go waste it on useless bullshit.

He also has an anti-authority streak, so I always point out how the government is up his ass all the time.

But I almost never use the words Republicans and Democrats.

It's a process.

They voted for Obama because of the color of his skin.  They're racists with short attention spans and a need for instant gratification.  Now they're racists that care about their place in the bad economy, still having short attention spans and a need for instant gratification.  If they don't get that instant gratification soon after the GOP takes back the house... they'll flip again because of their short attention spans.

Shallow is as shallow does.  Hope I'm wrong.

Being certified old fart material, I can dredge me up some stories.  Sit down and listen you whippersnappers.  I was in a Catholic grade school when Kennedy was elected President.  The Nuns were ecstatic and their mood was passed on to the kids.  Being 9, I was happy to see the nuns ecstatic and supported Kennedy.  I fancied myself a conservative none the less.  I supported Nixon.  I was in bootcamp in 68 and only 18 so I couldn't vote.  I, being a dumbass, actually volunteered for Vietnam for the first 2 years of my enlistment. When they suspended Bombing the North I knew we weren't planning on winning that war and quit voluntering, so naturally that's when I got sent.  I was in Okinawa when Nixon froze prices to "Combat" inflation.  When I came home and went to college I got a clue about how stupid and unpatriotic the left was.  Then I became more acquainted with how we fucked up the Bay of Pigs invasion.  No more PT109 hero worship for JFK.  Thanks for his service but he was an elitist, skirt chasing philanderer, drugged up on prescription meds and paved the way for unions to get their nose under the government tent.  Also, I found out how badly Nixon's price freezes screwed the pooch back home on supply and demand.  I wasn't aware Nixon was the president who pushed thru the EPA and ADA untill 20 or so years later.  I was really scared for our country when the Peanut Farmer was elected in spite of my vote.  I can fairly say Carter is the reason I could never be a Democrat.  Reagan is the reason I am a conservative.

Now I have the years of perspective under my belt to fully appreciate the law of unintended consequences.  While being a nice and charitable person I hate that govenment is trying to take over that role.

Where this country is now is the culmination of the policies started by Woodrow Wilson.

Philip Stricker, 21, a biology major who voted for Mr. Obama but says he has not been paying much attention to politics lately, uses a nontechnical term to describe the phenomenon.

Yeah, that's a euphemism for "The few conservative buddies I have left who aren't disgusted by my metrosexual worthlessness have been giving me crap on Facebook and Twitter, and I have no response that doesn't make me feel like a filthy prostitute."

“There’s a vibe,” he said on a recent afternoon, while pumping weights at the gym. “Right now it seems like Republicans just care a lot more than Democrats.”

Typical dimwit college undergrad logic--"Who's going to serve as my political mommy and allow me to extend my emotional adolescence a few more years?"

I know commenters here have remarked how Gen Yers and Millenials have had their futures mortgaged by the government and Obama's subprime-style leadership, but quite frankly, I have trouble feeling sorry for them.

They wanted Obama as president and they got him--and not because of his qualifications, but for the same reason that our society as a whole has degenerated into bullshit Oprah-fied "self-esteem" decadence.  It was so these tards could give themselves a pat on the back and give themselves a big hug for supporting the "first black president."  It was NEVER about improving our country, it was all about THEM and their superficial attitudes.  And now they have buyer's remorse because they're finding out that their celebrity-worshipping mindset has screwed them for a generation?

Yeah, it sucks that most of these kids will face a job market that increasingly has no room for them.  It sucks that our so-called "leaders" have been playing extend and pretend with the economy for 40 years.  But you know what?  That's THEIR fault and THEIR PARENTS' fault for not demanding better, and allowing politicians to get away with promising them something for nothing, or that "someone else" will pay for.

The philosophy of parasitic socialism, in place ever since the original wolf in Santa clothing, FDR, came into office, is now coming around to bite us all in the ass.  Can't say conservatives didn't warn 'em.

189 I was a democrat until  Mr. Peanut finally made me see the error of my ways.  In fact,  when I went to my 20th high school reunion no one could believe I had voted for Reagan.

In higih school,  I was that annoying liberal gal who argued about everything and thought if only people would see things correctly they would agree with me.  I voted for McGovern in my first election.

What woke me up?  The misery years of Carter,  which I have described in detail here before.   When Reagan came along,  things were so bad I thought, "Why not vote forReagan?  At least he won't be EMBARRASSING and maybe we can refinance our mortgage for something less than 17%."

Reagan was a wonderful man who had a lot of good ideas which I was surprised I agreed with.  Plus,  he liked the American people.

So to our young man who speaks of "vibes,"  welcome to the real world,  where people speak the truth and are generally happier,  because they don't spend their days looking for grievances.

"like Republicans just care a lot more than Democrats"

Once again, voting with emotions and not reasoning. The key word is "care" (, again, as usual). I'm fine if it works in our favor, but voting on emotions is infantile and counter productive. It's also a flag in the wind and therefore unreliable as it has no rational basis so it's subject to change on a whim.

A more appropriate verbal indicator for the health of the country would have been words that indicate an understanding of economics, Lord of the Flies Syndrome, demographics, etc. and how each party makes these better or worse for the country.

But then, what do I know.
