3 I get reports that more people than usual are migrating here to Texas. Now that oil has peaked again and the industry is slowly getting up to speed again, jobs may be had. There are more jobs advertised in my (non oilfield) home town now than there were a year ago.

4 Hours just got cut were I work to 35 a week for everyone.  Reimbursement for company miles driven was cut by 3 cents a mile.  No new hires for more than a year, and no plans for any.  I expect the company 401K to go soon, and then outright lay-offs if things continue downward

5 Lots of closed/empty stores, "for rent" signs on houses and apartments in this area (part of Los Angeles). The only construction going on appears to be city/state/federal projects.

Anecdotally, most people I know are unemployed or severely underemployed, some off work for more than a year.

Have seen "Obama" stickers of a few cars -- driven by the usual suspects -- but none for McCain. Didn't see that many for him at election time, though. The libs are hurting too, but they're still waiting for their handouts from Osama Obama's "stash."

Things are shitty here.

When he was in Searchlight NV last week, the pro-Harry Reid thugs threw eggs at the tea party buses and then called the cops and falsely reported to the cops that Andrew Breitbart had thrown the eggs.

After the police arrived on the scene, Breitbart had to explain to the cops that he had proof on tape that it wasn't him.  The cops shrugged, got in their cars, and left.

8 NY has been doing the work zone speed trap shit for a long time now. Without fail on the various highways and the thruway here, on any given day you can spot 2-4 separate setups.

A hell of a lot of the small towns around here are just as strapped for cash, and the police are being used for nothing more than tax collection.

They've even gone to the point of sitting right past the first slower speed limit sign, in a faster to slower speed zone.

16 Good observation. You can tell how things are going if you look into trucking. I know, I did it for 30 years and got out of it a year and a half ago and am more or less retired. On a side note, I got out of it because I couldn't stand the stress of all the maniacs on the road anymore. And another note, the last 6 or so years I drove for that most hated, by the left, retailer and it was the best and highest paying driving job I ever had. If you drive for them you make very good money and get treated pretty well.

17 I took a trip on I80, I35 and I235 in Iowa and was surpised at how many trucking companies had their lots full of trucks. One even had them parked in their regular employee lot. I doubt this was a new fleet of trucks waiting for the truckers to get back from their runs.

Government types tend to overpromise and underdeliver ("recovery is just around the corner") while corporate and business types tend to underpromise so they can overdeliver ("will continue to be a challenging enviroment").

That said, the more pessimistic corporate guys are usually closer to the mark. They're all saying that they expect a meaningful recovery to be at least a year and a half away -- and they've been saying that for about a year and a half.

And listen to what they say at Unilever: They're not competing against Procter & Gamble or Nestle so much as against private-label products.

(Just more indicators, for what they're worth.)

I just finished a 3400 mile trip from Northwest Oregon to Tucson and back.  I noticed many of the  same things.  It seems there is phantom highway construction going on here as well.  I've never seen this many police with radars out on previous trips either.  Not just at the construction zones but many blind corners etc. 

The people in Tucson are very happy that Obamacare passed.

Here's another indicator for when you get out of your car: See how many supermarkets and fast-food joints are hiring. These are traditionally high-turnover workplaces, so usually they're always looking to fill positions. Nowadays (like for the last year or two) they're just making do with the staff they have.

They run the place with eight people per shift. Someone quits? They go with seven. Someone gets fired? They go with six.

Otherwise you end up like Delaware.  While it's been split between reflexively Democratic/full-blown RINO for national level posts, governor and below tended to be a bit more diverse, since south of the canal tends to be quite a bit more conservative than the northern half of New Castle County.  That's why you would get either moderately squishy Republicans (Mike Castle, Pete duPont) or moderate to slightly liberal democrats (Tom Carper, before he became a senator or Ruth Ann Minner) elected governor.  As state and local taxes increased over the years in PA and NJ, people moved to Delaware, they brought their voting patterns with them.  As they move, Delaware keeps getting bluer and bluer, and at the same time, the noobs tend not to make the association between how they vote and how their taxes go up.

36 I spend a significant amount of time on federal government property, and I can tell you it appears somebody recently released a lot of money for projects on federal property.  There is a regular ballet of private contractors doing all sorts of things to the roads, the trees, the buildings, etc.  If that's all you see of America, you'd swear we're in the middle of a thriving economy at this time.  You'd also see a significantly higher ratio of Obama to McLame bumper stickers on the cars in the parking lot.  Probably something like 10% of the cars have some connection to Obi and/or other lib/dem candidates/causes.  McLame and/or repub stickers?  Somewhere around 0%.

37 Was at the mall yesterday.  It was packed.  Was surprised.  But, with the mall you have no way of knowing if people are buying or if it was the day's destination.  You know, buy the item you came for, eat in the food court and go home.  Locally a lot of stores are totally empty, the previous business having gone out of business and no one replacing it.

Was talking with a friend.  Her mom had joined curves and one morning she went and it was totally gone.  apparently this has been happening to a lot of them since they insist on a credit card and my mom's generation doesn't like that.  They want to pay as they go and curves wants the money up front whether you go or not.   This might be why they went out of business.  Have noticed hair and nail salons are still going strong.

PA, I travel throught out VA, WVA and PA (live in MD) and I can relate to everything you said.  If Cap N Trade goes through all of these states, especially WVA, are going to see big hits to their economies.  They are already laying off miners in the No. Panhadle of WVA.  It will truly devestate WVA.  God help us all.

Also the VFW that I am COmmander of had to renegotiate our contract with our sign company because their revenues have been in a steady decline over the past three years.

While I didn't see any for McCain, I counted a half dozen NRA stickers.

I was jamming on the northbound leg.  Did about 16-18hr straight since I was on the clock for a wake Tuesday and couldn't dawdle at all.  Just little power naps along the way.

The flip side coming home was initially rough, the first 500 miles I just wasn't with it and struggled.  The last 1,000 miles I was in the groove and did in one shot with occasional 15 minute power naps.

i live in southern Va.  we don't have any industry left to speak of.  a little to the west of me, in Martinsville VA, there is highest unemployment in state:  a little over 20%.  I read where EPA was stopping mountaintop mining (the ugly strip mining).  so the far west of Virginia will be hit with that.

Here's one thing that we can extrapolate from the available data--consumer spending and the average hourly wage have mostly been trending up since November, but the average hours worked as stayed pretty stable--between 33.8 and 34 hours per week.  However, nearly half the workforce--44.1%--has now been unemployed 27 weeks or more.  The savings rate has also dropped during that time.

Here's something that Denninger quoted on March 29th from the BEA:

"Personal income increased $1.2 billion, or less than 0.1 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI) increased $1.6 billion, or less than 0.1 percent, in February, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.  Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $34.7 billion, or 0.3 percent."

That tells me that people are starting to live off of their credit cards again, and this was one of the contributing factors that led to the meltdown in the first place--people living beyond their means.  Only this time, it looks like they are spending their credit on essentials--food, gas, etc.--rather than big ticket items.

Also in the same metro location are hundreds of units of new rental apartments in a few very large complexes. Unclear how much is occupied. Over two blocks on Vineland is a brand new hi-rise apartment building that seems to have been under construction for two years, now nearly finished, but still uncompleted and empty. Further down Vineland is another hi-rise of maybe seven stories, finished perhaps two years ago. Not a rental but condos. When you drive by at night this building of at least 25 or 30 units has only four or five lights burning. Along this same stretch of Vineland we have made a game of counting the number of dilapidated RVs parked on this major artery. Clearly no longer used for recreation but as actual "residences." Most are falling apart, and some house suprisingly young people Still, for all of that, "Praise Obastard" bumper stickers are everywhere, and not a single McLame specimen.

It would make sense for people to do that, correctly perceiving an anti-corporate government and predicting a bail-out for "regular people who have fallen behind" around every curve.

But the creditors keep these debts on their books, and the government can't legislate away all bad consequences for every ill-conceived action. In the long term, there will be a day of reckoning, don't you think?

That's an excellent point--I had forgotten about the "strategic defaulters".   You can spend quite a bit on consumer goods when you're not paying $1500 a month on your house.

Looks like I was a sucker for renting during the bubble after all--I hadn't anticipated Bernanke, Geithner, and Obama's desire to keep the housing market from deflating to market-appropriate levels at all costs.

97 Not only are there a lot more "strategic defaulters", some banks are allowing people to stay in their homes until it sells.  The reason:  vacant homes with the eye-catching foreclosure sign taped to the window is attracting robbers who take everything ... from the appliances to cabinets to flooring. 

My friend thought someone was moving into a home down the street a few weeks ago.  They had a moving van out front ... children playing the yard (the lookouts).  A couple days later, she found out they had cleaned out the house.  Everything was gone.

99 You don't know what you're talking about; the trucking business is alive and thriving. In fact, I nearly got run down by one of the prosperous truckers on I-29 just south of Omaha last week as he was texting away (I drive a large pickup and was able to see what the hell he was up to when I recovered from him nearly running me off the road). Of course, the thriving truckers have Mexico plates and appear to be running I-29 pretty hard to Calgary and elsewhere north. We've seen them on I-35 perhaps heading over to Chicago too. The progressive globalization has done wonders for trucking, just as long as you're an under-insured Mexican firm with a fraction of the government regulation U.S. firms face.

Yes indeed. Think about it. We have record numbers of mortgages in default or foreclosure. If you're faced with paying the grocer or the bank that owns your mortgage, which would you do? The bank can't get you out of your house for months... maybe never. Why? Most banks won't cut you a deal or modification on your mortgage unless you actually refuse to pay them. You'll take a credit hit, but so what? You probably have lost use of your credit cards already. Either you stiff the bank or you don't eat, don't fill the gas tank, sit around the house in the dark. And in non-recourse states, the bank cannot pursue collections on a first deed for primary residence. So PA has probably hit on something.

Re the economy:  I live in an area right outside of Philly that has a very long commercial stretch (route 30, Lancaster Avenue). In our vicinity, I'd say one of every three storefronts is empty.  Tons of massage and nail salons, though.  Nobody's hiring.  When we moved here awhile ago, it was a prosperous, bustling area.  Now it's as depressed as anywhere else.

The new buildings and mall structures built in the last 3 years are still empty. There's no recovery, I don't care what any economist says. This reminds me best of the Carter years, down to the lines of people at any job opening.

120 When overdraft priviledges get can in the new banking regulations there will be no free checking offered.  Thats how the banks will get there fee income.  That is the big driver for income for financial institutions.  If you take a look at how banks get their income the majority is through fees.  If you take a look at Credit Unions income...much less reliance on fees.  But unfortunately that will change.

Things are about the same here as they have been for quite some time -- except now the county/township employees are starting to lose their jobs (cutbacks -- counties don't have the money anymore; imagine that).  So it's still a horrible economic depression around here, just a little worse.

Oh, we did get one of those fancy schmancy Obama, shovel ready, stimulus work projects signs on the main street through the largest town.  No work crews, no shoveling taking place...but we got a sign.

In the past year I've seen more people taking non-motorized transportation than I ever have -- bikes, roller blades, and yes, people that have them are turning to their horses.  Couple of places have built little stalls to accomodate their ride to work folks.  Same with gardens, more people are planting them, defying some town ordanances; the town can't do anything about it, can't take on 3/4s of the town for something like that.  Kinda cool actually; tells me people aren't willing to lie down and roll over just yet.

Nobody's putting out political posters/bumper stickers whatsoever except for a dozen or so hard core folks.  That includes the towns and the college -- the mood is distinctly pissed off (except for the college kids, half of them still appear quite clueless, although not all).

125 Incognito --that is a great idea. Conservative senate candidate in CO is Ken Buck. Jane Norton is fine if she wins the primary, but Buck is better as far as leaning conservative. I've been wishing I had a good source for various HoR races. I'm too new to being interested in politics to have any connections to find out if an R candidate I read about is a serious contender in their district. Yesterday I donated to Sarah's pac that is supporting the R's in the 20 districts that went McCain but elected a D for HoR. A list of PACs that will support conservatives would be a good addition to the site. They wont miss me because I never donated politically at all in the past but I refuse to donate to the RNC.

130 The other day my friend called to say her county was hosting a crafts fair in the parking lot of her local park in May.  She was concerned cause she never saw the county sponsor anything like this and she realizes they are using the fees as revenue.

131 Have a lot of friends with young families.  In 2006, 2007 and 2008 a lot of them bought two million dollar plus properties taking jumbo mortgages.  the mortgages carry with them sometimes 10% interest rates.   Now there property value has gone down sometimes as much as 30% and their mortgages are more than the property itself is worth.   They are working people, both husband and wife and this isn't uncommon where they live so they are now in a panic.  They can't refinance.  No one is writing jumbo mortgages anymore.   If you are lucky enough to work on WS and still have a job you might be able to get them to refinance your mortgage at a lower rate.  Otherwise you are stuck with a mortgage for a house worth like 30% less, rising property taxes, rising income taxes, rising utility costs and all costs really and you either have to keep paying that mortgage or just walk away.   some of these people put in a million dollars of their own money to buy the houses and they are seriously starting to talk about walking away as their "investment isn't worth it anymore">  So when people start to do this, then what?

It may not be theirs to sell anymore if the bank has taken possession of the real estate.  They may do an auction, but sometimes that takes a while to get going.  I work for a business lending bank, and it's not uncommon for us to grab the contents of a building when it goes into foreclosure depending on how the collateral language was written in the loan docs.  Of course you usually only see this in the independent stores, not big chains where they just shuffle it to another location.

I regularly travel between The Center Of The Universe (Ann Arbor) and West Virginia.  It's a route that cuts right through a vast swath of Ohio.  In the Carter years, the northern portions were rusting, emptying small factory type places (I'm ignoring the multinational corps in this post), things like tool & die shops, packaging industries,  part refurb/refinish shops, etc.  In the south it was like Appalachia (but with more industry)--poor, rural, and empty.

After Reagan, this area started booming.  We saw new steel buildings with lots of new industry, all along the route.  New malls, new auto and motorcycle and farm equipment dealerships. New motorhome and camper dealerships. The town of Lancaster expanded hugely.  Micro-businesses like TV repair shops, body shops, and folks owning two or three trucks for transporting gravel or dirt, or long-haul wares popped up in the damndest places. You'd see a double-wide trailer home on the side of the road with the typical redneck satellite dish on top, and three shiny tractor trailer trucks parked right next to it.

This of course continued well into Clinton's time, but tapered off as the Clinton recession hit.

It struggled along during W's time, but has gone dormant now.

Those micro-businesses are mostly gone.

146 Last weekend I drove from Phoenix up to the Tea Party Event in Searchlight. Most of the area I droe the was desert wilderness but there were a fair amount of people in the casinos in Laughlin. Best sign of the trip...just out side Wickenburg AZ, a rancher ahd a G. W. Bush "Miss Me Yet?" sing right by the side of the road. Obama stickers are few and far between here in AZ. When my job required me to travel last few years I was in Denver a lot. The October before the election every third car in the Denver area had an Obama sticker it seemed. By the following April they had disappeared like a spring snow on a hot afternoon.

In Taos and Santa Fe The better restraunts we ate at were full, but traffic at the fast food places seemed to be down. The parking lots at the ski lodges were about 2/3 full don't know if thats good or bad. Airplanes were full out of Rapid City and Minn/St Paul. I found Chicago quite alive and busy. Everywhere I drove the traffic was bumper to bumper. I took the train Downtown (from the north west suburbs) Friday and Sunday, both times there were lots of people on the move and on Sunday it seemed to me a lot of families were heading into Downtown Chicago as a way to spend some family time. I came away from Chicago with the notion that there is an inherent strength in this econonmy which a lot of people fail to notice. I have seen I-80 with way more truck traffic but again the eating places were full and i saw employment oppurtunity signs on a lot of places in central nebraska. Any how its not all doom and gloom out here in flyover country

150 Was at a holiday gathering the other night and one of the women, in her forties, who lives in a multi million dollar neighborhood said she shoveled her own driveway for the first snow and then paid two teenage boys for her second major snow.  She said usually there are tons of illegal aliens who ring her bell to shovel but this year the bell didn't ring at all.  She was worried that the illegals were gone and there was no one to mow her lawn this summer.  (we rolled our eyes)  But then someone else said they were looking at an apartment in the city and all the construction guys were illegals.  He said when challenged that you could tell, none spoke english.  So  a big union guy said "well then they must be union members cause the city would never let illegals take union jobs without huge problems with the union">   the other guy insisted that they weren't union.  Was fascinating, was afraid these two old guys were going to have a fist fight.

156 I think, so far, in big cities, things look fine.  There appears to be no economic problems, people out eating, buying spending.  If you are out of a job in a big city you feel alone and alienated like something is wrong with you.  In big cities I think people are quietly losing everything.   they are embarrassed cause everyone else seems to be doing just fine.  It's really sad when you realize this is happening.

158 I know Texas closed a bunch of rest stops years ago because of an ADA lawsuit. Rather than spending the money to bring them up to compliance, they just closed down the non-compliant ones.

Lots of empty bill boards here too, which has gotta suck because Texas is very very strict on billboards. Almost impossible to get a permit for a new one, and costly to keep existing ones permitted.

What strikes me is all of the for sale signs on homes. There is not a neighborhood anywhere in the Austin metro area that doesn't have multiple for sale signs up on every block. One street I drove down, it was literally every other house.

Texas has fared better than the rest of the country, but times are definitely tough. This is my second year of unemployment. House was foreclosed on in February, only reason we could afford to move is that the apartments are so desperate to rent that we got a $199 move in, $199 first months rent and $805 a month on a three bedroom apartment. (Cheaper than than the house payment was.)

Thinks it's gonna be a long time before it gets better.

164 @52 When my son was in Indianapolis last summer he took pictures of homeless people wearing Obama t-shirts and caps. My other son likes to take photos of the union guys who picket his job sites. I guess the way it works is, they show up at the union hall and the the only work for them is to picket (my son's non-union company and others like it win the bids) -recently, the union tried to run all the non-union companies (construction related) out by using some technicality on how certain materials are graded. Me, I'm doing three-week jolts down here at Fort Polk, Louisiana and taking R&R weekends back home near Fort Campbell, Kentucky. I spend a lot of time on I-20, I-55, and I-40 doing this. It's hard to gauge the condition of the country based off Leesville, LA. This place half-dried up and blew away when the 5th Infantry Division deactivated and they almost closed the post entirely.

Monroe, Louisiana seems to be doing OK. I just see a little of it on my route.

Vicksburg, Miss, always has casino revenue. Even when times suck, people want to try to strike it rich.

Jackson, Miss, seems to have boomed through the 2000's, before I took this job I hadn't seen the place in years. I-20 up through Madison toward the Toyota plant is all new malls and suchlike. Not sure what downtown looks like.

Memphis, the sucking asshole of Tennessee, always seems to have major problems. But as long as it sits on a major trade junction of two Interstates and the Mississippi River it will never go away.

Part of it for me is I've spent so much time in smallish hard-times Army towns, I guess I'm used to it looking like the Apocalypse came and went. I would submit the downtowns of Oak Grove, Kentucky and Leesville, Louisiana as evidence.

168 My friend went on a road trip with a few friends during spring break.  They went to a place that has those "Outlet Malls">  they said a lot of stores that were there the last time they went were gone.  A whole mall was empty but for 5 stores.  The other malls had sporadic empty stores interspersed with the remaining stores.  And they said the stores were well stocked, better than they have ever seen.  They said there weren't all that many "outlet mall type of bargains".   They said the trip was saved by the nice hotel and the nice restaurants but that the outlet malls were a bust.  One of my friends said if you go into macys or jc penny with a coupon and shop the sale items you could do better.   They said the JCrew and Banana Republic stores had some good buys but nothing you couldn't get at your local mall store, not their outlet stores.

House was foreclosed on in February, only reason we could afford to move is that the apartments are so desperate to rent that we got a $199 move in, $199 first months rent and $805 a month on a three bedroom apartment. Sorry to hear about your job situtation, mpur.  And yeah, renting seems to be the way to go.  I'm renting a 1600 sq ft condo (2 bdr, 1.5 bath - full basement, which is nice) for $809 in a really nice part of town.  I'm in the city, but the way the neighborhood is situated, it's like being in the country.  Across the street from me is this wide open field where the state university houses cows and horses as part of its Agriculture studies.  It was weird at first to go outside in the morning and hear mooing, and then drive a few hundred feet and be on a busy street.

Penn closed a rest area a few years ago on I-80 6 miles  west of the Deleware water gap (jesrsey border. The reason was because it became a gay cruising spot. Now there isn't one for 50 milrs.

They may not be able to find a buyer.  Sometimes, if the bank has a customer in the same line of work, they can work out a deal with them...we had a restaurant/bar shut down not too long ago, and were left with all these cases of unopened liquor/wine/etc - we ended up selling it to a distributor who also had loans with us, and it was an easy way to get rid of inventory that had no dollar value to us otherwise.

Or there could be something else going on with that particular store.  You could always do a UCC search to see who has interest in the property (secretary of state website, it's public record).  If you're really interested, that is.

There's a big park with a lake across the street and the back side backs up to empty land owned by the school district and beyond that is the high school. 178 Vermont has closed several rest areas.  Oddly, the ones left open are the super-expensive showpiece rest areas like the VT Welcome Center on I-91 north, the the two up in Williston and the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Rest Area on I-89.   The VVMRA has a super-fancy organic biological means of dealing with grey water that probably costs more than most of us make in a life time.
If they had just taken the money and built plain, workmanlike places to buy a soda and take a shit they probably could have kept all the rest areas open and built a nice memorial for the vets on the state house lawn.

181 Maryland has nice rest stops.  It appears though, that the rest stops are supported by the fast food establishments that are renting or owning them.   If the fast food guys own the rest stops and the Maryland government has no responsibility but to lease the land then it would be a good deal for all.   Not sure how to find that information out.  Anyway, they are beautiful efficient rest stops and could serve as a model for the rest of the county.  although, when I was there, in the last year, saw a lot of people who did not appear to be native marylanders.  Many Pakistani immigrants and Mexican immigrants, Guatemalan immigrants.  I'm nosy like that, I ask "where are you from?"....

UCC = Uniform Commercial Code.  A UCC filing shows the liens placed on a property, and what that lien consists of (real estate, chattel - which is basically anything inside that can be moved, i.e. not permanent to the real estate).  Banks will check the UCC filings on a property as part of a standard search of the real estate to see who all has vested interest.  It's important to make sure you've got first lien position if that's your aim (especially since there are instances of mortgages not being filed or filed incorrectly - you think you have first lien position when in reality you don't...also, some counties are just incredibly behind in that sort of thing).

If you go to the secretary of state website, there should be a link for UCC searches.

Well, my "man in the street" report from the heart of Dixie has lots of "change" but darn little "hope..."

Shopping centers & strip malls are emptying out, and the one local enclosed mall seems to be the haunt of teenage hookers- some might call that "a feature, not a bug," but not me. I see the personnel from the stores out in the commons, talking to each other- something you don't do if you have customers.

"First month's rent free" and "ask about our new, low commissions" are common on commercial real estate.

The real estate office of the most prestigious Realtor is shuttered, and the real estate sales offices on the way to where my wife used to have a job have no cars in their lots. Lots of "for sale" signs on brand-new houses.

The employment service where we were going to submit resumes? Closed, a while back while we were polishing them...

Down the street from us, an Urban Horror named ___ Villages has been taking shape-- we have a large influx of people, who having contributed to the ruination of our big cities by voting liberal, are fleeing the crime, taxes, over-regulation and general oppressiveness of the same... but you see, they have fears, err, "issues" that must be addressed for their mental well-being.

One is hurricanes, another, fear of rubbing elbows with  locals, particularly us rednecks and those folks of the colored persuasion...

So the answer to assuaging these terrors is to build 4 and 5 story steel, glass, and concrete towers of "townhomes," with gated access to keep the riffraff at bay. Some even have earthworks surrounding them... like the billion-dollar condo conversion also down the street, which is being pursued for nonpayment of taxes, and "nonperformance." They kept taking people's money, but never quite got around to building what they had promised.

My guesstimate is one out of five unemployed- often after going through multiple jobs that also did not pan out. Among black youths? About 50%.

I suppose that I should try to check out the 4th Ave. Street Fair on the weekends but honestly I've always imagined it to be something like M-F "downtown" except for fucking hippies replacing the cadre of government workers.

Nah... come to think of it, no matter how cool some of the artists' stuff might be, probably not worth being hassled for spare change by all of the junkies.  (I can't imagine that they take the weekend off or anything.)

But, we're putting in a TROLLEY down there and I'm told that will change EVERYTHING for businesses located "downtown".

219 Just went to Orlando. Disney was incredibly busy but the retail areas nearby was decimated. Many, many closed store fronts with some entire strip malls closed - frankly surprised. Many of the old dinner show places appeared to be shuttered as well. I am guessing people are going to the parks but are not doing much beyond that. We stayed at a Marriott property and got a really good rate. During our drive from DC to and from Orlando, I was surprised at how few Obama bumper stickers I saw on the highways....we actually saw more Kerry Edwards stickers and "Who is John Galt" billboards on 95.

I travel from NW Oregon to do the 4th Ave. street fair.  It is twice a year and is juried.  They must have a smaller weekend thing going on that I am unaware of.  There are many artists that are conservative out there.  We just don't show our politics as we have to make a living.   As is most business', it is not a good idea to piss half your potential customers off.  The beggars usually move off site during these festivities.  There is also a large police presence there.  The only bad thing is the drum circles that tend to concentrate o n the sides that can be very annoying.
