I saw that at Hot Air - it's what inspired me to blow off work for a bit and write this little post. It's a similar theme I have with regard to other areas: traffic violations, for instance. Why is the push always toward more regulation or making us safer within existing regulations, rather than making it possible to raise the speed limit?

Simple.. Those who work for Government wish to keep their jobs, and get promoted.  In order to do so they MUST ensure that they appear to be doing somthing AND as Government adds more poeple to enforce the new Regulations, people will have to be promoted to oversee the new people...

Its the nature of beurocracy to grow... and unless there is an outside force creating counterpressure, it will grow until there is nothing else left...

I've suggested a modified version of your approach since 9/11. Instead of .38's (since not everyone is a crack shot) issue knives (or bring your own) to every passenger that wants one. Kind of like conceal and carry, but there can be no mistake that there will be someone on that plane that can take out the terrorist.  This approach would work since passengers, not TSA, have been the ones to stop attempted attacks.  I am deadly serious about this approach.

It's time to transfer the misery of flying on commercial airliners to the people who have caused it.
I haven't thought this out completely...actually...not at all. But wouldn't be nice to drag out a few of the junk airliners that are resting in the Mojave desert boneyard and turn them into "Special airliners". They could be used to carry nothing but islamics. Perhaps one or two flights a day across each ocean and a couple of flights a day across the US to some of the major hubs. They could be flown by Islamic pilots, and passengers would be served by burka clad flight attendants. I'm sure others could come up with a menu and other niceties for the flight.
Islamics would no longer be allowed on regular commercial carriers. They would have to fly on their own special airline and blow themselves up if they wish.

Speaking for myself and several friends I've discussed this with, what we really want is for it to be FASTER and easier. The whole process is designed with the convenience of the TSA in mind, not the passenger's. A good professional ergonomics company should be called in to analyze and streamline the process. God, hopping around trying to get your shoes on and off while people swarm around you, unpacking your laptop while the guy behind you taps his foot, trying to put your shoes and belt back on while also trying to get your laptop back into the case while more stuff floods out of the x-ray machine....
No real company would treat "customers"* with this level of contempt and ineptitude.
My first suggestion is that the TSA randomly choose 1 in 5 passengers to just get waved through. I doubt this will encourage terrorists. My other idea is that if airlines have multiple flights to a location in one day, maybe they could call one the "You Takes Your Chances" flight and let everyone who flies on it skip the security check.
The reality is that any thinking terrorist isn't going to try and get things through security any more. They'll be using airport employees to plant bombs in luggage or placing explosive packages in the secured areas for the flier to pick up. (The secured area of airports is only secured for passengers. The employees that work there often get no more than a perfunctory check.) Hell, the TSA will apparently hire anybody. I'd say there are opportunities there.
Bottom line is, the TSA has not provably stopped a single terrorist since they were started. All terrorist attempts worldwide have been stopped by the passengers.

*Check the TSA brochures--we are, apparently, "customers." With the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Club Fed.

I was watching CBS news this evening, and they were running another fluff piece about how most travelers do not mind the additional sexual assault security patdown, because they knew it made them safer. What made this particular piece more, uh, interesting, was that they interviewed the security officer who passed Mohammad Atta through the x-ray machine and on to his flight, which he eventually flew into 1 of the World Trade Towers. The icing on this cake was when this guy- whose name escapes me- stated "What would you rather have, your jumk touched, or your plane taken over by terrorists" (Or words to that effect). I startled my wife and kids when I yelled "Yeah, that really means a lot coming from the man who facilitated a mass murder".

That was rather cathartic, for some reason.
