— Gabriel Malor Via the Anchoress, who calls him an asshat:
"I met with some people while I was home dealing with domestic abuse. It has gotten out of hand," Reid said on the Senate floor. "Why? Men don't have jobs."Reid said that the effects of joblessness on domestic violence were especially pronounced among men, because, Reid said, women tend to be less abusive.
"Women don't have jobs either, but women arenÂ’t abusive, most of the time," he said.
"Men, when they're out of work, tend to become abusive," the majority leader added. "Our domestic crisis shelters in Nevada are jammed.”
Jerk.
This is called a hasty generalization. Reid is characterizing an entire group of people (men) based on his personal experience. Unfortunately, his personal experience isn't the whole picture. This is the fallacy of incomplete samples. In fact women are as likely to initiate violence on parters. It's just that men are less likely to take advantage of shelters or crisis hotlines. That doesn't mean that women "tend to become abusive." It means that a fraction of the groups of people, men and women, have partner violence proclivities. It doesn't mean that all men and women do. That's a hasty generalization.

I dunno what the real numbers bear out, but I have to admit that I've known a lot of guys who enjoyed working long hours because it kept them away from the nagging harpies nesting in their homes. If forced to confront their bon-bon eating, whiney, spitefull harridans every day, all day, it is not surprising that they would snap. Not that I'm excusing it - I'm just saying I understand.
However, I think this might be a chicken-egg thing. I suspect that the kinds of men who are chronically unemployed are also the A-shirt wearing abusive trash that one would expect to enjoy beating up a woman.

Indeed - we all know that the feminists are paragons of truthfulness. I feel sorta left out - having no wife, I have no one to beat up when I get overly excited during the half time show. I see the black eyes on all my friends' wives and think to myself "I'm missing out!"

Mr. Reid is offering an important warning, and I for one am interested in doing my part to help in this time of crisis. For any of you ladies living with unemployed boyfriends, please think of your safety! Send me a current picture (preferably in underwear/swimsuit), a short essay on what skills you bring to make a man happy, and a copy of your last two years' tax returns. As an employed man, I will be selecting one or two of you to rescue, to live with me and share my bed without fear of domestic abuse. Why? Because I'm a giver.

Recall the scene from Blazing Saddles where Clevon Little pulls his gun and holds himself hostage?
Ok, we start with a clip of Reid saying
"Men. when they are out of work, tend to become abusive."
Follow that with a clip of Little holding a gun to his own head and saying:
"Do what he say! Do what he say!"
With the subtitle of "Mrs. Harry Reid"
OK, at least I amused myself.

Women are just as likely as men to institute physical violence? Maybe. But men are more likely to seriously injure or kill a woman because of their disproportionate strength.
By the way most violent percentage of domestic abuses occur between two gay men. There you have two people equally capable of inflicting real harm.
(Women have more automobile accidents than men. But men are involved in more fatalities by auto..likely because they are more likely to engage in reckless behavior and speed.)

Worse, you're falling into the liberal trap of not allowing us humans to use our inductive reasoning skills. With them, we make logical leaps, inferences, see patterns, etc. It's true our generalizations may be wrong but it's also true that generalizations are very helpful in understanding complex situations.
Stop being a liberal, Gabe.

And that's never been entirely true. Women (with the exception of a few well-off white women) have always worked for money to support themselves or their families...and not just widows and spinsters. Farm wives have always contributed to the bottom line, city women took in piecework or washing or went out to work in factories or offices. And not just for "material extras" like the conservatives who hate working women like to decry, but for better nutrition and education for their children.

The "abuse goes up when the men are jobless" is a bunch of bunk (not saying it doesn't happen, but) right now a lot of the homeless shelters are overcrowded (it isn't that people have lost their homes a lot of times; it's that they can't pay to heat the damn things, or they've had their water shut off)...what do you do when you can't afford a hotel room and the homeless shelters that allow families are overcrowded? Momma gets in touch with the domestic violence shelter, says she's been beaten by Daddy and is afraid for her and the kids -- Daddy goes to the shelter that takes in the drunks (or sleeps in a tent in the woods or in the family car), Mommy and kids goe to the domestic violence shelter...everybody stays warm and has running water for at least a couple of weeks (except for Daddy potentially), and usually they get some welfare food and healthcare on top of it. The family plays russian roulette with the state social workers not investigating them and causing trouble.
Feminists and statist handwringers go all a flutter over "rising domestic violence", and Daddy gets a bad rep even though Daddy is the one who often suggest doing it to keep his babies warm.

139 True that, and perhaps part of the problem. I don't believe in violence or beating up on women. As a woman, however, I have to say: if some bitch decides she's going to start punching on you, just because she thinks she can get away with it -- lay her out. If a woman is going to play the "I'm just as rough and tough as you are" and dish out whup ass, then she'd better be willing and able to take it. Might make for some civility and personal good manners working their way back into our society.
Guess I'm a true feminist, huh?
**that said, I've already let my husband know that if he seriously transgressed on something serious (like beating the kids or cheating on me)...he'd be a dead man; not that he would vecause he isn't that sort of person, but just in case he started thinking about it (same for me likewise, not that I would because I'm not that way, but if I started thinking about it -- a relationship with mutually assured destruction is a polite relationship!)

It really isn't funny -- the way society has gotten there's already akin to a bounty on men's heads; this statement doesn't help (because you just know the meme will be taken up and ran with).
Even something innocent can become fodder: some years ago my husband threw my coat to me; unfortunately the car keys were in the coat and I got smacked in the eye by them, true if strange story; I cussed and he apologized (even though it was an accident) we laughed about the shiner I got later. Cut to the next day at work: I had to fend off a bunch of concerned women (mostly, but a couple of men) hand wringers "did he huuuurt you???!!!???"...and trying to get these idiots to believe it was an accident? hah! because we all know as a battered woman I'd feel compelled to lie about it. Talk about a hassle! And it pissed me off, because 1)I wasn't believed; 2)the implication was that my husband was some kind of abusing monster (and these people didn't know him other than he had just gotten back from a deployment, oh noes) and that I was some kind of delicate little victimized flower who couldn't take care of herself (hey, thanks for thinking so little of me there co-workers, that I can't fend for myself at least a little); and then the offering to take me to the doctor or call the authorities -- wtf?? It was like they were just going to go ahead and judge my husband over my account and get started on lynching him...that's how people's lives are ruined; that's how family's are ruined, and it doesn't matter because a bunch of goody goodniks want to feel good about themselves (and the state loves them some goody goodniks to help keep control of things).
Fortunately, they realized they were getting me pissed and didn't do anything on their own for my benefit...but after that I wasn't seen in the same light, and they treated my husband like he was some sort of wild animal that I (foolishly) kept in my house...oh my frakking good grief.
Posted by: unknown jane at February 23, 2010 07:27 AM (5/yRG)
If indeed the domestic abuse centers are jammed full of unemployed woman, then wouldn't it stand to chance that they are saying they are being beat on just to get a free place to stay and food to eat? I mean, they don't have a job and they're sick and tired of there lazy good for nothing husband that keeps spending the baby formula money on Schlitz. So, kill 2 birds with one stone by getting rid of your bastard of a husband and get a free place to stay for a while.

What is this douchebaggery?
This is a small statistical sampling but only slightly less than Reid's. When I was out of work for three months, I got up, dropped the kids off at school, looked for a job, did stuff around the house, looked some more for a job, played cheap golf, picked the kids up and made dinner.
There was no domestic violence.
Unfortunately for him, not everyone can fit into Reid's fantasies.

UJ, and some women are unscrupulous enough to use that knee-jerk response if they get angry and want to strike out. I had an MTBI a while back and a broken hip, both from falling down the stairs. The MTBI made for vomit-inducing vertigo. So, for two very good reasons, I couldn't walk. I got to the bathroom by crawling on the floor after a controlled fall from the bed. Even crawling, I did the occasional faceplant. Nevertheless, I got accused of chasing my ex. This was three days later. I couldn't have chased a dozing paraplegic turtle stuck in vat of nougat after an all-night quaalude bender.
Some people can justify any bad behavior when they're angry, and in that situation prejudices of whatever type--in this case, against men--can easily be used to manipulate opinion.
Re the stats on women and violence: I wonder how skewed the results are if men are less inclined to report real violence out of embarressment and if women are more inclined to report violence even when there isn't any.

Fortunately, I got out of it with a restraining order that was later thrown out of court. That didn't stop her from putting obscene lies into the filed paperwork, stealing my car and driving it to Detroit to be impounded, or one of a hundred other nasty things to cover her own ass.
One night before she took off she carried on so badly that one of the neighboring apartments called the cops. They came in with weapons drawn when I answered the door. Thank GOD she didn't injure herself or claim I did anything to her, though they tried to get her to say that. I'm thinking it just hadn't occurred to her yet.
I dodged a real bullet. Society's bias against men both in the criminal justice system and in family court is getting people ruined, injured, and killed.

I'll accept our society's mania about domestic violence when I am asked about it when I go in for a sprained ankle or a broken finger. Until then, fuck 'em all.

If Reid were to show up at a NV employment office in Vegas, he'd probably see abuse up close.
