— Open Blog So I put up the first Scott Brown post here a month ago. It was greeted with, uh, skepticism.
Umm..you want we should actually give money to a Republican senate candidate in Massa-two-shits??Yeah, seriously. Of course, some commenters were prescient:Seriously??
There were 500K votes for democrats in the primary and about 140,000 for Brown. Democrats had 4 people running for the seat, Brown was virtually uncontested. I think he has a chance, I think many many people in the state are pissed off and they are pissed off at the incumbents, which she is identified as I'd say.A couple of days later, Ace himself started "[g]rasping at straws" by posting on Brown. There was actually some optimism this time!
Don't count Brown out. Don't believe the polls. This is winnable. Believe.Just an amusing pastime for this very happy morning while Ace recovers from his dip-induced catatonia. Thanks to all the morons who helped make this happen.
[OregonMuse]Update: Let the correction of the record begin! Read this article: "President Bush deserves our respect, not our betrayal." Realize that the man who wrote these words was one of John Kerry's legal flacks in 2004. Now check out his website. I used to think that it was going to take at least a generation to set the Bush record straight, and to appreciate his accomplishments. Happily, I may have to revise my estimate downwards.

OK, confession, early on I actually implied me might be ghey because we never saw his wife.
Wonder why he never let out why his wife wasn't around til late in the game? Guess everyone in MA knew why, just the morons outside MA had the questions.

I think I read that the wife was a television personality locally and that abc, I think prohibited her from appearing on air and taking part in the campaign. He alluded to this in his acceptance speech.

56 Arlen will have an opponent in the Dem primary - Joe Sestak. I'm going to register Dem so I can cast my vote for Arlen. (PA has closed primaries.)
NOBODY wants Specter. Sestak has a better chance of winning against Toomey so he has to be eliminated.

Not so. This state is CRAWLING with libs out of Cali these days. They will fight to the death to keep this Majority Leader seat. They HOPE we sit back and let it ride without the same hard fiahgt it took in MA. The NV Republican party is not very well organized. AND we are broke as a joke here since OBAMA effectively shut down the convention business. Getting Harry out will be every bit as hard as getting Boxer. This is a Mormon State. Harry uses that to his advantage. I am sorry, intrepid, but without the nation behind getting Harry out, it will be business as usual here in Nevada.

"Once KennedyÂ’s condition became terminal, he could have resigned his seat in favor of an appointment or special election. Instead, the Democrats and Kennedy decided he should martyr himself to advance socialized medicine in America. Had he resigned before the health care debate began, the Republican victory in Massachusetts would be a myth. Instead, it is now a reality. Yes, you can credit Ted Kennedy with killing health care, not just Mary Jo Kopechne."

I will be one of the only people to admit I NEVER thought he would win. Not even yesterday. I thought he was going to lose until about 9 pm with some 50 percent of the vote in.
Can you blame me? It is a democratic state. It is a machine state. They have NO republicans in the house of representatives. It was Ted Kennedy's seat for 40 some years. The fate of Obamacare(which i assumed Mass would support) hung in the balance. I still can barely wrap my head around this man winning.
More on the Kennedy seat thing. I've been trying to think of a comparison for republicans but I can't. Is there any seat held by one Republican or Republican family for over 40 years? how about 30? or 20?
This seat was the Kennedy seat. This was more of a House of Lords seat than an American Senate seat and the democrats lost it. And obfuscate as they might, it is clear why. They can't blame low turnout as the turnout for this race was as high as the 2006 midterms. This win will be in a history book 50 years from now. I know we were all excited about the NJ Gov win, but that doesn't even hold a candle to this Massachusetts election.
I am enjoying the crow. It tastes great in this instance.

Keith Ohlberman's outraged defense of the use of the word "teabaggers" and it's origin has got to be number one. I also enjoyed Chris Matthews looking like a teary eyed homeless man, and Rachel Maddow's incoherent arguement of why the Democrat lost. Oh, and Norah O'Donnel looking so forlorn as she reported from Brown's victory party before it started and making the comment that the place was abuzz and Martha Coakley's Hotel Ballroom was empty. From what I heard last night he certainly didn't run as a RINO. I don't know much about his legislative past from the MA legislature, but you can't know for certain what he'll do until he gets to DC. I am also a firm believer that a lot of these RINO concerns would go away if we had a strong, conservative leader for the party. A lot of our RINO problems the last few years derived from Bush not being a conservative.
At the end of the day, the choice was him or Coakley. You know what you're getting with Coakley, so at least you have a chance with this guy.

Yeah, I made that point yesterday too. There were so many times the Dems could have won this thing. If they hadn't mucked with the system when they thought Kerry was going to beat Bush, they could have have had Deval Patrick appoint a successor instead of doing a special election. If Kennedy would have resigned instead of bitterly clinging to power til it had to be pried out of his dead cold hands, he could have picked his successor to run, done a few campaign appearances with that person, and they would have romped in the special election. If Deval Patrick would have run a special election right after Kennedy died instead of installing a place holder, the anti health care animus wasn't at the boil over stage it is now, and they could have won then. The Democrats screwed themselves. Schadenfreude is sooo delicious!

I watched his entire victory speech, and I had previously read all the stuff on his website. The guy seems very genuine, and frankly, pretty far from a RINO. He is a little rough around the edges, but i was pretty damned impressed. He is against everything I am against, and for a lot of the things I am for. But I also think he has a natural charisma, and a real ability to connect to an audience. Television is very kind to him, he comes over very well. Is he an absolute hard-core fiscal and social conservative? I don't know. But without claiming any prescience, I have a feeling this guy might go a long way. Of course, as my wife constantly reminds me,"if I am so smart, why ain't we rich?"

Brown is against Cap & Trade, but I'm not clear he's against it becuase Global Warming is a fraud, or because it simply doesn't deliver what's promised, or does so at too hight a cost.
But he also supports waterboarding, and I MISS WATERBOARDING.
I also want to know how many politicians are simply afraid to call global warming (AGW) a fraud.

Well said. I don't think Brown is a RINO based on everything I've seen about him and he definitely didn't run as one in this election. He may not have pushed the fact that he was a Republican -- which is a smart move in that state -- but what he was saying was definitely conservative. He's probably right of Snowe and Collins but left of DeMint. I can live with that, especially compared to the alternative.

Last night, the left-wing candidate lost big in the safest state, in the wake of the death of the biggest liberal icon of the last 40 years, and Democrats were crossing the line to vote for the opposition party.
Independents went big for Brown, and independents' ranks have been swelled in recent years by those walking away from the other parties.
It could be a swing to the Right. But, at the very least, it looks like the electorate is sick of the parties and aren't buying their bullshit and being safe little sheep anymore, and that's a good damn thing. A disgust that's manifesting in the attempt to keep the hands of government from getting too powerful.

"The Repubs were mean and the Dems were playing too nice"? Unbelievable. Talk about intellectually dishonest "analysis." Let's look at some of the tactics by Coakley and the Democrats in the race. There was the direct-mail piece that accused Brown of not caring about rape victims, the ad of Brown in front of one of the WTC towers to symbolize his loyalty to big business, and the attacks against him for owning a few modest rental properties and 20k timeshare (when Kennedy and Kerry, rich men far wealthier than Brown, had served as the state's senators for decades).
Brown ran an honorable campaign that didn't spend a lot of time attacking Coakley whatsoever. Instead, he focused on what he stands for and what he would do if elected -- the way all candidates should conduct their campaigns. It was a breath of fresh air. Not surprisingly, the Left is grasping at straws with their "explanations" for why Brown won. Let's hope that the Dems continue to overreach so that they'll get crushed in November.

Either that, or some would engage in corruption in a much quicker fashion to take advantage of their limited time in office. I'm always wary of thinking there is a grand solution to mitigating the lack of character of many politicans. We just need to elect the right people to office, which I freely admit is also easier said than done.

I agree. By winning in such a blue state, perhaps the RNC will see that you should contest every single race. But this also means the party has to do a better job at identifying and recruiting good candidates to run for office in every district and state across the country. My concern is that Michael Steele is obviously not the best person to undertake this important and significant task. The GOP may make a comeback in 2010 and '12. However, it's unlikely to be due to Steele but instead due to circumstances outside of his control.

--Just think of all the millions of dollars spent --without even going into the political capital the president expended-- by the Dems to keep this seat. Even if Brown had somehow lost, the treasure spent by the Dems on the rearguard action would have been a bruise. (Historical analogy: Think of how much more smoothly and early Germany's invasion of the USSR would have gone if Yugoslavia and Greece weren't such pains in the asses earlier and Italy was not so inept.)

Former Bush adviser Karl Rove said Democrats, in their postmortem, have focused too heavily on blaming Coakley. He said Brown won because he put himself on the opposite side of the issues from Democrats in Washington.
"They're trying to say this is all the result of a bad candidate, but look, she was the attorney general of the state. ... She's won statewide, she's been a political fixture in Massachusetts," Rove said. "Simply being a bad candidate has not kept Democrats from winning Massachusetts. Michael Dukakis was governor twice, for God's sake."

Right now I am savoring the thought that an era has ended.
I grew up in an Irish Catholic family on the east coast, where homes really did have a picture of Pope John next a picture of John Kennedy, and my parents & grandparents were tremendously proud that one of their own was in power.
I held a different opinion from a young age, and was repulsed to see such liberines and lawbreakers retain power, no matter what they did.
That changed last night.
MA is no longer a fiefdom.
Take that, Kennedys.

Right now the enemy is demoralized, and every Congresscritter from a district (or State) to the right of Massachusetts is scared shitless and looking for a way to save their own hides. We have to keep up the pressure, whether our idiot leaders in DC want to or not.
As we saw last night, Steele, McConnell, Cornyn et al are pretty damn irrelevant to really getting good things done. They are trying to take credit by crowing about the $500k they funneled in. Speaking of people who were on board early - Howie Carr comes to mind. His radio show was pretty much Brown for Senate Central during the entire campaign. BTW has anyone from the MSM commented on the fact that the Mass Dems are to blame for this defeat. It's almost for certain that the Dems would have won this seat if they hadn't decided to change the law after Kennedy's death so that Deval Patrick could immediately appoint someone to take his place. Yeah but I'm probably wrong and Kos who thinks the dems weren't mean enough is probably right.
I'm counting down the minutes until Howie Carr comes on the air - he should be in prime form today.

There was a holdup at the Haiti airport. Planes of diplomats and politicians were landing while suppiles languished in the skies. It took several days to get help down there (which it should but remember Katrina?). The aid effort has not run smoothly, mostly because the looters are firing on the aid workers, they have one airport, and there was no structure to start with but I thought these guys thought they could do a much better job than Bush did during Katrina. Someone should advance the rumor that Obama dynamited the island core because he hates baseball or something.
