Report: NY Democrats Tell Paterson It's Time To Go
— DrewM

After last night's bombshell report that Paterson allegedly had state employees contact the woman involved in a domestic violence case against one of his top aides, resignation is simply a matter of time.

Now it looks like state Democratic leaders think the time is now.

Democratic Party officials are putting pressure on New York Gov. David A. Paterson to resign from office as additional details emerge about his alleged effort to intervene in a domestic-violence case involving a senior aide.

The state Democratic chairman, Jay Jacobs, headed to Albany Tuesday morning to meet with Mr. Paterson and encourage him to step aside, according to a source. Mr. Jacobs declined to comment, as did the Paterson administration.

Mr. Paterson suspended his campaign for governor Friday but said he is determined to complete the remaining 10 months of his term. Democrats are urging him to transfer power to his lieutenant governor, Richard Ravitch, whom Mr. Paterson appointed last year.

The scandal erupted last week when it was reported by the New York Times that the governor and a member of his security detail had reached out to a woman who had been seeking a protection order against David Johnson, a senior administration aide whom the governor has since suspended without pay.

Slublog emailed me earlier with this about the possibility of criminal charges against Paterson and wondering about the process of removing the Governor. Impeachment is more or less the same in NY as it is at the federal level...the lower house (the Assembly) impeaches and the upper house (the Senate) holds a trial. I doubt the legislature will get its act together to do this but my guess is they won't have to.

It's a question of when, not if, Paterson resigns. My money is on by the end of the week.

Nixon and Spitzer were far more stubborn and arrogant than Paterson and there were people who talked them off the ledge. My guess is it just becomes a critical mass thing.

In fairness to Paterson, he was the only politician in the state even remotely facing the reality of the fiscal situation. He fought off the left on wanting more taxes and both Democrats and Republicans who wanted more spending.

I'm not saying he was great (the state budget still went up last year) but he was the best of the bunch on that front. I guess that say more about the rest of them than him but that's reality.

New healthcare plan to be revealed tomorrow.  A "streamlined" version of Democrat version.

Will only include five areas where he's exploring Republican ideas:

Expanding health savings accounts
$50 million in government pilot programs to reduce malpractice tort claim
Putting doctors in as undercover medicare / medicaid fraud investigators
Relook at reimbursement rates of medicaid
Getting rid of Florida medicare advantage.

That's it.  Everything else is from the Senate bill, which would be approved first, and then, assumingly, these are added in a reconciliation bill after.

Actually, if you learn the history of the modern DEM party [post-1900], from Emanuel M Friend through Meyer Lansky to Bernie Madoff, you quickly realize that the DEMs and the MOB are joined at the hip, and are basically indistinguishable.

72 An informal survey among my NY friends.  They didn't think Spitzer should have resigned.  I pointed out that he committed a crime and that didn't seem to phase them at all, they still said that spitzer should not have resigned.  Now they are saying Patterson should stay put and that the admin should not interfere in NY.  And these people still have their BO stickers on their cars and their signs in the yard and in their front windows.  Guess all politics is really local.

Posted by: curious at March 02, 2010 09:27 AM (p302b)

73 Patterson's resignation may be exactly what New York needs in that Richard Ravitch has an impressive record of running a successful business and turning around failing businesses (Bowery Bank). He's politically well connected across the Democrat spectrum...which neither Spitzer nor Patterson really were.  And at 76 probably won't look to run which means he can go Bunning on the Legislature.

76 Ravitch's appointment should have been contested months ago, back when Paterson did it without regard to the state's constitution.

At the time, I did a little research and found that the only mechanism for replacing the Lt. Governor is an election which will only take place if both the Governor and Lt. Governor offices are vacant.  Until those elections are held, the order of succession would be President of the NY Senate and then Speaker of the NY Assembly, respectively.

106 Putting doctors in as undercover medicare / medicaid fraud investigators

Investigate this: Mountains of taxpayer cash encourages fraud. Ditch the giant government program and return healthcare to numerous small transactions between consumers and producers, and see what happens.

Only a complete f@#$ing moron would suggest that individuals go out and try to "sting" doctors.

Are these patients going to fake having gangrene, to encourage surgeons to, you know, unnecessarily chop off limbs, as Obama has alleged?

Are they going to fake having tonsilitis?

110 Undercover patients, omg. Great use of overstretched hospital resources. I wonder if they'll be stinging EMTs.

That Commiecrat healthcare "compromise" is just what I said it would be; a sham. They have no intention of compromising.

To a Dem compromise means you do it my way. They haven't crossed the aisle since the 60s when the Southern Dems were real Blue Dogs. All those Southern Dems are now Rs.

I like the way the media spends it. A conservative or moderate Dem is one who votes with the conservatives occasionaly (when the totals allow it).  A moderate Republican is one who votes with the Dems 80% of the time, even when it cuts the floor out from the Republican Party (ME sisters).

116 I was pro Kudlow until he was one of the like twelve invited to the WH for dinner with the pres early on and he never really criticized the guy again.  He would not be effective.

Have followed Kudlow for a long time.  Monica Crowley keeps pushing the "Kudlow for Senate" idea.   Knew the game was over after that dinner.  On his radio show he talked and talked about that dinner and who was there.  He fancied himself an important mover and shaker after that and was in BO's court henceforth.  I was never so disappointed in someone ever.   Does anyone have character and principles anymore or is it all about the power.

Posted by: curious at March 02, 2010 11:08 AM (p302b)

129 oh yeah, guess that bunning is trying to display core character and principles and he is being abused by both sides and blamed for everything.  I mean someone even said on the radio that he is doing this for the dems so that they will get everything they want when the people protest.
