Republicans Have Whip-Hand In Coming Redistricting
— Ace

Michael Barone notes:

Republicans look to have a bigger advantage in this redistricting cycle than they've ever had before. It appears that in the states that will have more than five districts (you can make only limited partisan difference in smaller states), Republicans will control redistricting in 13 states with a total of 165 House districts and Democrats will have control in only four states with a total of 40 districts. You can add Minnesota (seven or eiht districts) to the first list if the final count gives Republicans the governorship and New York (27 or 28 districts) to the second list if the final count gives Democrats the state Senate.

And on that topic: Zombie writes on Gerrymandering 101, and shows the power of the politically-oriented gerrymander.

6 What is amazing is that the dems were so shortsighted that they didn't take this into account.

If they could have held on for two years, they likely could have held the filibuster-proof senate majority and the house after the 2010 elections. The GOP voters were down and OUT after 2008.

Then they could have pushed all this shit through AND controlled redistricting.

We are extremely fortunate that liberals have no self-control. I think we'll look at 2010 in the future and see how big of a deal this really was.

(of course, none of this matters if we just get the same spend-spend-spend republicans we had from 2000-2006)

The bad news is that FLA is switching to a non-partisan commison - which means we probably won't be keeping 19 of 25 (soon to be 27) seats in what is pretty much a swing seat.  We should still have a decent majority though, since the dem population is so concentrated, not to mention the majority minority districts required by the Voting Rights Act.

The good news is Cali is doing the same thing, so we should gain a few seats there.

15 That's one of the few pieces of good news to come out of California with the passage of Prop 20, redistricting is no longer a function of the state Democrats buying off the GOP with a few bones.

I'm sure everyone will find something to gripe about with the commission that's going to do it, but at least the districts should end up more geographically contiguous, we won't have nonsensical boundaries that suck up huge chunks of rural and suburban terrain dipping into nearby cities to pick up just enough inner-city voters to keep them Democrat.

Let's hope the Republicans can manage to continue those "majority minority" districts in big urban areas, which the liberals love.  In reality, the help the Republicans by concentrating Democrats in districts that elect left wing nut jobs (Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Watters, et al).  This leaves suburban areas with mainstream populations where Republicans stand a decent chance of winning (defeating Grayson, for example).  And with the example of left wing kooks running Congress, the contrast favors the conservative in such districts.  Fewer safe seats, but more total victories.

Screw the redistricting commissions.  Give 'em a taste of their own medicine for a decade, THEN advocate the commissions circa 2020.

Evidently, Kasich wrote a letter to Obama explaing that the "high-speed" rail was dead but it would be awful nice if we can keep the money for road improvements.

Now Kasich knows damn well that Obama isn't going to let that fly but it's nice that Kasich is forcing Obama to say nyet to state infrastructure projects.

31 Sadly, my home state (Illinois) proved to be just as stupid as ever. We have Democrat Governor (Quinn....who campaigned on raising your taxes) and Democratic controlled Senate and House. And we lose a Congressional seat. So look for John Shimkus to either be squeezed into Aaron Schock's District or the Republican parts of his district given to Schock and Shimkus forced into a death match with Jerry (I am Bart Stupak's Monkey) Costello with the East St. Louis Board of Election serving as the referee.

85 Good to see people picking up on this. See, the national level elections weren't that impressive. Sure they look that way in terms of numbers, but almost all of the House pickups were not new GOP seats; most of them were strong GOP areas before 2006 when Democrats ran on being more conservative than the Republicans. They lost their seats back to Republicans when they failed to follow through.

In 2008, NO Republican seat was won by an incumbent. Not one. 255 Democrats won House seats in 2008. 240 Republicans won house seats in 2010.

So this wasn't a historical masterpiece like people say it was at the national level. But at the local level, its a different story. Republicans now hold more legislative seats in the states than at any point since the reconstruction. Republicans took a bunch of governor seats as well, including some that have long been Democrat positions.

That means the GOP is in the driver's seat for redistricting, and for judges and a dozen other little things that make up the flow of the nation politically and socially for years to come. That's where it was historical, and that's where the Tea Party won; as well it should. Tea Party is about grass roots local changes which develop into national ones. The Democrats were all about national changes because they think top-down. They're wrong.

I don't think you should ignore it.  I think the pedophile scandal is always more of an issue with Catholic Church here in the US vs. the Catholic Church as a whole.  And as for Nancy, I think the issue you're going to come up there is that she herself has never had an abortion or performed one so excommunication is hard to justify, no matter how much we wish she would be and probably deserves to be.

118 California's one saving grace this cycle is the new commission for redistricting. While certainly not the ideal scenario, it will put an end to some of the God-awful gerrymandering by both parties in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. I think Los Angeles will yield 2 Republican districts out of redistricting, SB the same, and one possible competitive one. I don't mind my gay congressman (Dreier) but I do mind that if we combined my city of Rancho Cucamonga with neighboring Upland, San Antonio Heights, North Fontana, Devore, Victorville, Claremont and Ontario (to make it a fair fight) we'd actually have a congressman representing the west pomona valley. Instead, my west pomona valley region is splintered up between 3 congressional districts, only 1 of which is Republican- my district- and that one we have to share with fucking Glendora and Pasedena.

135 I sat on our County's Reapportionment Commissions in 1981 and 1991. IIRC we were compelled by United States Supreme Court decisions to fashion districts that were as square as possible, as compact as practical, to pay deference to city, township and village jurisdictional lines and with no more than 5-8% differences in population between districts. . With census data and a good computer program fair redistricting should be relatively easy. Race and incumbency should not be/ should be prohibited as factor.

162 After all, why is miss nan still allowed to receive communion and why hasn't she been excommunicated?

All due respect, the state of their souls is not your problem, now is it?

It was not very long ago that American Catholics were, in practical terms, virtually ineligible for higher elected offices because of the suspicion that a Judge or a Congressman or a President might take a decision based on their fear of being "ex-communicated" or some such, from Rome.

(Honestly, we almost never do that. A few high-profile cases over the centuries make the news, sure but that's really not our gig.)

If you doubt this trend in the American political character, just look at the successful efforts to paint W as some sort of a kook because he is a professed Evangelical Christian or, in very recent history, the insinuations ginned up in the popular culture about Mormons when Mitt Romney seemed a likely potential nominee.

Is Barney Frank a loathsome human being?

Quite possibly.

Is Nancy Pelosi a really crappy theologian?

Most assuredly!

Still.  We find our pastoral objectives better served when all Catholics are eligible to achieve enough status to influence this very potent culture.

We couldn't have that, if we started ex-communicating high profile, nominally Catholic idiots left and right, now could we?

Besides, we couldn't do it even if we felt like it.

"The rules" just don't allow for it.  Being deeply stupid is just not a sin (believe me, I've checked!).

*sigh*

228 How about we create a way so Gerrymandering DOES  NOT HAPPEN AT ALL?

Sure.

Check in with me when you think you have the recipe for changing human nature

Scratch that, you'd be an utopian and folk like that just give me the hives .

"If men were Angels..." and all that.

I'm sorry Romeo13 but your vision of conservatives as being somehow more morally pure and above dirty fighting (identity politics) is, at best, a woeful misunderstanding of "turn the other cheek" and, at worse, a fatal self-conceit.

Just because you or I have no desire to run other people's lives, plunder their treasure and degrade their honor, doesn't mean that there aren't other people out there just champing at the bit.

They always are, always have been and probably always will be.

We necessarily share the same tool chest.  It's called politics.

And gerrymandering has been a very effective bludgeon.

Me?  I know I don't want to get hit and I'd prefer that my neighbor doesn't get it either (I'm sentimental).

If the choice is to pick up the club and take a whack at some bad guys or leave it on the table and watch my neighbor get brained, I'd feel like a perfect shit inviting his widow over for pot-roast a couple of weeks later, how 'bout you?

I understand the impulse, the wish to be able to walk away and let the better angels of men's minds work their suasion and, in my limited experience, that actually works almost 99% of the time!

All it takes though, is for one vicious little bastard to change the whole equation.

There's always at least one in any crowd.  Always.

If you are the only one in the room right now, all that means is that you now know who to keep a special eye on!

The bartender eyes him as he pulls out a tiny pianist out of his pocket, that instantly jumps on a tiny bench in front of the tiny piano and starts to play. 269 A young boy and his grandfather went fishing one afternoon, after a couple of hours of fishing, the grandfather opened a can of beer, the grandson noticed and asked, "Grandpa, can I have a sip of your beer?" His grandfather looked at him and said, "Grandson, Is your penis long enough to touch your ass?" The grandson replied, "No!" "Then you're not old enough.", said the grandfather. A couple of more hours went by, and the grandfather lit a cigarette. Again the grandson noticed and asked, "Grandpa, can I have a cigarette"? The grandfather replied, "Is your penis long enough to touch your asshole?" Again the grandson replied, "No!" "Well you're not big enough to smoke yet.", said the grandfather. About an hour had passed and it began to get late, so the grandfather decided to pack it up and head for home. On their way home they stopped at a store, grandpa bought two lottery tickets and gave his grandson one. Grandpa scratched his off, but didn't win anything, The grandson scratched his off and won $10,000. Grandpa was all happy and surprised that his grandson had won and he asked, "Are you going to give some of that money to grandpa?" The boy looked at him and replied, "Grandpa, is your penis big enough to touch your ass?" Grandpa looked at him for a moment, then replied, "YES!" "Good, then go fuck yourself!", said the grandson.

Ever wear New Balance before?  Just because the shoe claims to be "wide" doesn't mean it is wide enough for your foot shape?  The toe of the shoe could be too narrow.  I don't even bother with Nike's because the one time I was trying them on they were always too tight, no matter the size or if they were marked wide

322 Well, one state that's gonna get boned in redistricting is Oregon. As of current, the Secretary of State is the one charged with the redistrict, with input from the legislature.

We tried to get a non-partisan commission, but it was overruled.

BUT, the good news is that if/when Oregon gets the district that Illinois loses, there are very few places that the Big Labor SoS can put a district.

She can't divide up the 3rd district any more than it is because it's already too concentrated. Really, the only place that she could divide is the humongous 2nd district of Eastern and Southern Oregon, where Greg Walden hangs his hat. Because of Bend's explosive growth, and Medford's growth as well, they could theoretically split the second district in the middle, with Bend as the head of the 2nd district and Medford/Ashland as the big part of the new 6th district.

And, yes...the 6th District would LIKELY go Republican.
