I just got phone call from my friend who said she is at the rally - I had no idea she was going. She is black, gay, athiest, and worked for the Obama campaign. She is there with a 9/12er that she works with.
How's that for change?

Wow! Beck just said Americans are the Greatest People in the World.
That just goes to show you his ignorance and racism. Say, how do you like our big poster of pictures of W next to pictures of chimps making the same facial expressions?

I've never really liked him. Gershwin steals his lunch money and gives him a swirlie, for my money. AC got really weird in his quartets, concertos, and the like. He played in the minimalist, early-mid 20th C oddness a lot.

Today thousands of angry white people have descended on the National Mall on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, to whine about how they’re being persecuted and unfairly maligned, sponsored by a race-baiting lunatic Fox News host who promotes the ideology of the far right and the John Birch Society and has called President Obama “a racist with a deep-seated hatred of white culture.”
TheyÂ’re broadcasting this bizarre inversion of reality on C-SPAN, where you can see that theyÂ’ve done their best to recruit as many black speakers and absolutely horrible black singers as they could, because thatÂ’s how they prove theyÂ’re not racist Â… at all!
Glenn Beck managed to fill the stage with black people, but when the cameras pan around the crowd, itÂ’s an unbroken sea of white faces. And the crowd is nowhere near the 300,000 figure Beck was trumpeting in advance.
If Martin Luther King were alive today, these same people would be vilifying him as a communist and an evil progressive. The irony meter is off the scale on this parade of white victimhood.

[Self deprecation] during incredible times finding ourselves saying what a big mistake.
Declare principles and values. Disagree on politics. Agree that God is the answer. [If "God" is The Ideal power of creativity.] Wake up call will fade is it's only about today. Change your life today to root yourself upon faith, hope and charity; it's what we do FROM here that matters. Take the 40 day challenge. Leave freedom better than how you found it.
[here come the tears]...Where is our George Washington child in the crowd?
In 25 years he can proclaim, "I have a new Dream." This is the point of choice. Wallow is scars? Or learn from the past and ask for redemption. Tomorrow may never come, but we have today to make a difference.

So if calling someon a racist makes you a racist, it seems everybody in this conuntry's a racist. Right? - since most of you are calling Beck a racist.
I kind of don't think anybody that is claiming Beck is a racist has any idea what it is like to experience racism first hand. And I believe it undermines the racism people experienced in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Here's the def'n of racism: a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
If anybody is racist it isn't Glenn Beck, it would be the people that hate him and somehow think their beliefs are superior to his and that he doesn't have the right to express his 1st amendment rights given to each of us in the Bill of Rights.
I'm guessing most of the people criticizing Beck either have their hand out for more "free gov't money" or you're all for taking my money and "spreading the wealth," but you're damned if your going to give up your own money to give to causes you feel so passionate about - There's no need for the gov't to tax you so that you can give your money to something. Go find a cause and give all your hard-earned money away.
I think it's funny how some of us that of us within this country that make $30,000/yr think that just because a person makes up into the hundred thousand dollar range, they should be taxed higher; But none of those same people feel the need to give up their money to the people in the 3rd world countries, that earn a tenth of that same $30,000. -SPREAD THE WEALTH - HEAVEN FORBID THAT YOU ACTUALLY WORK FOR YOUR OWN MONEY!!!

I see what you're saying, but if you were a big believer in that mayor, put your faith in them to make things right, you're not going to be too happy about that news coming out. It's the disappointment in the realisation that what you once believed is a lie or not what you thought. The truth will set you free, but no one promised that freedom would come easily or without pain/grief/etc. Of course, I don't think Beck was strictly speaking in political terms, either.

It seems to me that JFKerry indeed viewed his military service purely as a political stepping stone--and super liberal politics at that--no argument from me there.

Seriously, we don't have to feed the left's accusations that conservatives hate education. Think of the men Bill Buckley selected as the founding editors of National Review--Russell Kirk, James Burnham, Frank Meyer, Willmoore Kendall, L. Just because we embrace some elements of populism and we oppose "educated" liberal elitists like President Present, doesn't mean that we have to denigrate higher education.

But he does play the religious angle, yet he is not a church so doesn't declare his financials. God has spoken to him, and he wants you to stand with him and pray with him ... but his organization is not a church.
Beck does glom on to the TEA party movement, yet he is not a political organization so does not reveal the finances.
He is willing to pledge his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor WITH YOU. But he will get rich off of the "giving" of his life, while you will donate time and money.
He wants to have it both ways ... he is a freedom fighter that is giving up his life ... but he is also a capitalist when he is selling everything to "the movement". Yeah, I know, he donates to good causes.
When you get one guy sucking in the money while claiming to be a "martyr" type, you can end up with another wealthy TV evangelist, but he has added the TEA party angle. These are the things that bother me about the Beck Show, even as he presents a lot of good material.
But certainly the majority of Americans are desperate for leaders that are not corrupt and/or Marxists or socialists ... so Beck (and others) is a start at filling a void. The true leaders, as I see it, are those that are laboring in "the trenches" with their local blog, or pushing a candidate that is honest and experienced and not backed by the mob or corporate America.
Anyway ... Beck is helpful, but should not be "worshiped" ... as I see it. He is the successful marketer that is pushing a popular position.

It is not in the DNA of the Right to bring attention to themselves in any way.
So anyone who does....anyone who goes out on a limb, who puts themselves out there (in their imperfect and human way) will be creamed sooner or later.
A rightwing activist will first be riddled with bullets by the MSM, Hollywood, Academia, and the DNC. This will bring them to their knees, bloody and begging for help.
Then the rightwing establishment will swing into action...not to help...but to put them out of their misery with a bullet to their head.
Finally, the rightwing base walks out to give them a proper burial....but first a swift kick in the ribs...a rape of the corpse...and an announcement of what an embarrassement this jerk or jerket was...what an illeducated piece of white trash, what an incompetant, with a weird accent, crazy family life, or horrible speach maker, couldn't find the WMD, he said maccaca......on and on.

There's no contest. Once, when asked why Robert Kennedy wouldn't appear on his show Firing Line, Buckley responded, "Why does baloney fear the meat grinder?" That's because Buckley could best the liberals at their own game. He, almost single-handedly, gave conservatives a fighting chance in American politics--because he first laid the intellectual groundwork. To paraphrase Wittgenstein about Plato, all of late 20/c politics is but a series of footnotes to Bill Buckley.

Beck is an old guy with a wife and kids and a couple of jobs. Even if he wanted to do it, he doesn't have the luxury of time to go to a college or university, it's almost not possible.
Besides in college these days, if you aren't in lockstep with the political and ideological beliefs of the professor (giving you your grade) then you can't admit you disagree or your grade has and will suffer. You essentially have to put aside your own ideology for the sake of your cumulative average and parrot back to them everything they want you to know, which is essentially usually a little off the track. Which is actually so sad cause you are just regurgitating in order to get a piece of paper instead of thinking and arguing and forming opinions based on substance.
Posted by: curious at August 28, 2010 10:49 AM (p302b)
As a private business person that is marketing a product ... of course he does not have to, except to the IRS.
But he "acts" like a church when he gathers people in the name of religion. And he acts like a "charity" because he himself says he is acting for God, and that his cause is to save our country.
So he collects money sorta like a charity and a political org ... but he keeps all the profits for himself and keeps it secret.
Limbaugh and Coulter have much less pretense, as I see it. They acknowledge that have done quite well selling their "insight". They haven't pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor in "solidarity" with their audience. That sort of call to a higher calling for others to join doesn't "jive" (to me) with his hand in hand marketing of every item.
He scoffed the other day that people were worrying about how rich he was getting off all this. But it seemed to me his was sorta rolling his eyes about it, like he is so far above that ... while at the same time declaring himself a capitalist when he sells his $7/month insider side of his web site.
Seems rather disingenuous to me, no matter how much he cries. But there is some good info for sure ... that regular journalists and reporters should be reporting on, if they weren't busy pushing their own leftist cause ...

You're an ass, Leo. That was in Nineteen-Fucking-Fifty-Five, when American universities still had some measure of respect and value. Today they're just four-year-long diploma mills staffed by communist terrorists, that churn out kids who come out the same damn-fool idiots they were when they went in, albeit with a piece of paper that assigns them an arbitrary value higher than that of people who actually know how to go to work and produce things.
I believe Bill Buckley was also the guy who said he'd rather be governed by the first 400 names in the Boston phone book, than the faculty of Harvard.

There are many more modern examples. Early 20th Century Law School in Tennessee used to be a year's study/apprenticeship. Besides, schools do NOT hold the monopoly on higher education. There are yet self taught geniuses who study independently and read voraciously, and learn from criticism.
Schools teach more than curriculum, itself no longer Classical. By faculty and peer example, stylized affected mannerisms are demanded and acquired prior to promotion from degree into profession. Unaffected manners are not acceptable.
I look at the corrupt sophistry that higher education has produced. Before either writing or voting on a bill, our Demagogue Majority Congress sent to the Potus to be signed into law legislation that was never debated in or out of committee. With all their graduate degrees from Ivy League or wannabe institutions of learning, our presidents, judges, and legislators scam America "because I could" (Clinton). But where much is given, much is required. Elitists with no servants find their own hell.

"Seriously, we don't have to feed the left's accusations that conservatives hate education. Think of the men Bill Buckley selected as the founding editors of National Review--Russell Kirk, James Burnham, Frank Meyer, Willmoore Kendall, L. Brent Bozell, and Whittaker Chambers--all highly educated. Just because we embrace some elements of populism and we oppose 'educated' liberal elitists like President Present, doesn't mean that we have to denigrate higher education."
You make a good point; but Buckley hired talent, whatever its background. For years, NR's book editor was a cowboy; his columnists included the owner of an industrial-adhesives firm (D. Keith Mano) and a former writer of pornography (Florence King). He even had a teenager on staff in the 1960s (Garry Wills, before he went very, very wrong).
My point is that Buckley did not confuse education with schooling: there are many ways to acquire an education, of which attending college is only one (and arguably not the best). And he certainly did not confuse schooling with intelligence, as shown by his famous remark that instead of being ruled by the faculty of Harvard, he would prefer fifty people picked at random from the Boston phone book.
I'm sure most everyone here can agree that the cult of the Ivies has done enormous harm to our country, especially over the last 25 years. The sooner we end it, the better.

This doesn't surprise me. Any organization that is not explicitly and self-consciously conservative will drift left over time, every time. Fox is no exception.
Not to mention that Prince Alaweed bin Talal (sp?) of Saudi Arabia now owns a big chunk of NewsCorp. (Yes, the same Prince Alaweed that pulled strings to get Zero into Harvard, and paid his tuition.)
Ain't gonna hear ANYTHING negative about Saudi Arabia on Fox now, I'm afraid. Makes honest, full news coverage kinda impossible, considering that the Saudi Wahhabis are behind everything from the radical mosques in America to the Muslim prison chaplains who are radicalizing inmates, from the 9/11 terrorists to the Ground Zero Mosque.

I just hope a lot of TEA party types don't get too hung up in "The Beck Show" movement and get diverted or disappointed in the real ground swell movement. So far Beck is helping propel it forward, and has certainly helped the thang ...
I've just seen too many cases where a "star" gets a little too big and full of himself. Pride goes before a fall ... that kind of thing, and the "I'm not worthy" humility seems a little phony to me at times. He sure felt worthy enough to be the keynote speaker and to drone on quite a while ... just imagine so many of the televangelists that rise and fall ... smells a little like that to me, with big bucks rolling in from the "faithful".

Wishful thinking takes many forms with these people.
Posted by: The War Between the Undead States at August 28, 2010 11:17 AM (jv481)
the stuff the poster was saying and all the other posters were happy to hear would, it it turned out to be true, essentially ruin his career but also would really make a lot of Americans very very cynical. A lot of people would feel let down, yet again. The sad part is that you can no longer think to yourself "that can't possibly be true, it's just the libs/dems trying to take the guy and his message down" because so many people in recent memory have let everyone down by their behavior.
Posted by: curious at August 28, 2010 11:21 AM (p302b)
I wonder what it actually could be. IIRC, Beck himself has talked publicly about the skeletons hiding in his closet. Don't remember all of the details of what those skeletons were, but I don't think many folks would have the guts to do that or would hide anything.

I like Levin's political ideas, but his personal pettiness really irks me. Beck's success just eats him up--and it shows.
Posted by: Kathy from Kansas at August 28, 2010 11:26 AM (74mQe)
Well just what is he/she claiming, that Beck has been screwing farm animals on the side? We already know he's a reformed alcoholic, it's a cornerstone of his whole redemption theme.
I already AM very cynical, about nearly everyone and everything. One thing that bothered me about the rally today was that much of it, at least Beck's part of it, was full-throated evangelizing, something I don't like and something that has made many people cynical in recent decades, what with the misadventures of certain high-profile evangelists. But if the crowd at that rally today truly believed what Beck was saying, and if they're representative of Beck's (huge) total audience, then I doubt there's anything the Left could dump on him that would be so horrific it would turn that audience away.

I'm not being evasive, but I just don't want to promulgate the rumor. So I'm trying to say that I've seen the same thing today in quite a few places to let everyone know there is something out there, something brewing, that is on the order of the Catholic priest problem.
The irony is of course that this would suddenly be popping up on the heels of his very successful event in DC.
I like beck, I think he's genuine. I'm going to be really upset if it turns out that he isn't. Since I saw several posts in several different places regarding the same thing, I'm thinking this is like a small attack on the guy when he's had his success. Ace and the other bloggers can find the same stuff I did. I'm hoping the beck folks find it and see it too. I saw it quite by accident. and then started reading all over to see if it was isolated or perhaps concerted.
Posted by: curious at August 28, 2010 11:30 AM (p302b)
The professional jealousy is pretty evident, but what's really burned me up has been Levin's repeated charges that Beck plagiarized passages from one of his books, a charge for which, to my knowledge, he has never bothered to provide any evidence, such as a specific page number of a specific title. I can only assume Levin's so jealous of Beck that he just chose to lie his ass off, which I'd thought was beneath him.

This is one of the defining differences between us and the Left, one that they use to their advantage... we still have enough humanity left in us that we have the capacity to feel sorry even for our enemies. They don't; nothing is beneath them, no lie is too vicious, no degree of personal destruction too extreme, no amount of exultation in the death or defeat of any of us too vulgar. They are animals.

Rolling in to where exactly?
Other than books and insider charges on his website, I am not aware of any charity that GB operates, that seeks donations, contributions or fees from which he profits. This is the charge you keep insinuating.
As I stated in kk at 606, all his venues are available for FREE.
So, again, where is the cash flow... from the "faithful" directly to GB... that you keep mentioning?

I understand what you mean. I don't really listen regularly or watch regularly any of these guys. I may watch a couple of days in a row or listen a couple of days in a row but I don't really have the time to devote to them. I think most people take what they want from these guys and discard what they don't agree with and i think these people would consider themselves successful if they prompt you to delve into things you might never have delved in before. Except o'really, he wants you to take everything he says to heart and know "he's watching out for you"....I don't believe that.
I like batchelor sometimes and savage. If anyone can claim they had the idea before the fox/abc crowd it's those two. Batchelor was brining up the PIGS more than a year before anyone even thought that Greece or Spain would have major financial problems....but he and his guests did and they said so.

I'm not familiar with Savage or Batchelor, tho. They aren't carried here in Central Ohio. At least not that I can find.
Posted by: ErikW at August 28, 2010 12:43 PM (2BQU0)
He is building his brand ... his ratings go up = money, his several books made him big money, his $6.95/month site is money. All enhanced by him being the key figure.
He is marketing everything, even if he is sincere and even if his "product" is helpful. When he was selling his pay site, he said it costs "because I'm a capitalist". Yet he promotes himself as pledging his life and fortune and honor.
So far he is balancing the profit part with the "martyr" angle fairly well ... and many are getting promoted through his show. People went to DC in protest of Obama, which is great ... but the event was mostly a "Glenn Beck Show". It was pretty good ... the parts I saw, even though it led up to an hour or so of Beck.
The gathering around all that was good though. And he is selling a lot of good conservative info, which is marketable. But I tire of hearing him act like he is sacrificing, and calling on others to join in his sacrifice.

There is some real conflict there, as I see it. When you are doing the "work of the Lord", it is easy to have cross purposes if you are also doing the "work of a capitalist", unless the Lord's work is purely for profit.

and batchelor plays interesting unusual music that Charlie Gasparino complained about when he subbed for him...but I like the odd interesting music so "de gustibus non disputandum"

I think Beck has the, to me, extremely annoying personality of recovered soaks along with the attendent emotional retardation. I very much appreciate the work that he does, and at times he's made me LOL at some of his digs at Olberdouche. But he sends me up the wall with his crying jags and other vagistic quirks.
If you have a chance in the middle of the afternoon from 2-4 you should listen to Tammy Bruce over the internet. She isn't for everybody's tastes but I find her to be a refreshingly smart-mouthed gun-toting (she even blasts Chris Christie for being anti-gun rights) lesbian doll-baby who broadcasts without commercial interruption for free (she gets her funding from subscribers who get a third hour and podcasts). Her website has a link to her webcast and you should give her a try. She's like a female Mark Levin in that she despises squishes and Repukes and regularly calls the jugeared fuck "that dumb bastard in the White House".

CanaDave, you wanted info on Prince al-Waleed bin Talal's connections with Obama and with Fox News.
Here's some info on al-Waleed's possible role in Obama's Harvard education.
http://tinyurl.com/n9yrye
Scroll down to the section headed "Obama's Benefactor." There are links in the text that you can click on for more info. I just re-read it, and I guess I goofed, stating as a proven fact that Prince al-Waleed paid Obama's way. It was al-Waleed's friend Khalid Mansour who pulled the strings--but we STILL don't know who paid all the bills. However, considering how involved Mansour was with making sure Barky got that Harvard Law degree, and considering what deep pockets Mansour's buddy al-Waleed had and has, it makes it pretty unlikely that that Saudi prince did NOT contribute big bucks!
On al-Waleed's stake in NewsCorp, the parent of Fox News, see:

From Urban Dictionary: Concern Troll
In an argument (usually a political debate), a concern troll is someone who is on one side of the discussion, but pretends to be a supporter of the other side with "concerns".

It's hard to tell sometimes. I've been accused of being one and I get upset when that happens. Then I realize that the poster usually doesn't realize i'm not a republican or a conservative, that I don't like the political parties and that I'm actually typing what I'm thinking cause I'm an independent. I'm an independent cause I feel neither political party has anything to offer me, so I may as well avoid them. The dems/libs though are easy to avoid, they just scare me.
