Rick Sanchez: Obama Is "The Cotton-Picking President of the United States"
— Ace

In his spare time, Rick Sanchez enjoys colorin' books, picking his feet, and drooling.

But during the day, he's an esteemed member of CNN's Very Special Broadcasting Team.

So here he is, splitting atoms... with his mind.

Thanks to Exurban League (ExLg).

You ever say something, and you know right when you say it, it's like a really big mistake, and you try to pull the words back in even though they're already out... you sorta vapor lock, but you know there's no way to get them back?

No?

Ok, well just me and Rick Sanchez then.

at least to me.

Unfortunately for the MFM, they have been making the rules about what is racist for about 40 years now.  By their own standard, this is completely racist and Rick Sanchez and all of his co-workers and their next of kin should all lose their jobs.

They have been setting the precedents for this kind of reaction for years.  Now it has blown up in their faces.

208 Try the urban dictionary when you are looking for derogatory terms about blacks. Not Merriam Webster idiot.

What an online open dictionary of modern slang. That's your source jerk? Lets try and actually be serious about language, actually look at historical record, and not use some BS random entry in an open dictionary to define the origins of a term that has been in the language for close to 100 years.

Etymology Dictionary entry.

Cotton-Picking

as a deprecatory term first recorded in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, but a similar noun meaning "contemptible person" dates to around 1919, perhaps with racist overtones that have faded over the years. Before mechanization, cotton picking was the most difficult labor on a cotton plantation. I drove out to a number of the farms near Denison and found many very young white children working all day in the hot sun picking and dragging sacks of cotton. In one field the labor corps consisted of one woman and six children, one of them 5 years, one 6 years, one 7 years, one 9 years, and two about 11. The father was plowing. The 5 and 6 year olds worked all day as did the rest. The 7-year-old said he picked 50 pounds a day and the 9 year old 75 pounds. (A good picker averages several hundred a day.) School begins late on account of the cotton picking, but the children nearly all prefer school to the picking. Picking hours are long, hot, and deadly monotonous. While the very young children seem to enjoy it, very soon their distaste for it grows into all-absorbing hatred for all work. ["Field Notes of Lewis W. Hine, Child-Labor Conditions in Texas," report to U.S. Congressional Commission on Industrial Relations, 1916]

So no definite yes it was racist back then, maybe it was; it's not used that way anymore, and I doubt that is how Merrie Melodies and Looney Toons intended it.

217

Well, here is my two cents:  Depending on where you come from in this country will determine how common or familiar with that phrase you are.

I got a bunch of Ohio/Michigan farm types in my family.  So yeah, I heard the phrase "wait just a cottin pickin' minute."  Used it myself a few times too.  Mostly just for the fun of using a regional venacular that gave me some good lines.

And the meaning was basically, "wait just a damn minute."  As far as Ricks use, "he's the cottin picking president of the U.S.", same general meaning.  He's the damn president of the U.S.

No real racial intent behind it.

HAVING SAID THAT....

I know that if anyone on our side innocently used that phrase, the intent wouldn't matter a damn.  The left would just use that as a bad faith cudgel to beat that person to death.

Fuckers.

So.  Even though I don't think Rick Sanchez really had any sort of racial intent, as far as I'm concerned, he can go to hell.  Since he'd happily destroy anyone on our side who innnocently said this, I'm happy to see him destroyed.

As people have said:  "Let them live up to their own damn rules."

Or to paraphrase Proximo:

So Morons, we shall go to CNN together and have bloody adventures. And the great whore will suckle us until we are fat and happy and can suckle no more. And then, when enough men like Sanchez have died, perhaps you will have your freedom from bad faith race baiting.

227 True headline from 02/05/09 School Cancels Cotton Picking Slave Day

A Mississippi school has canceled "Cotton Picking Day" - a themed day for Black History Month where kids were invited to come dressed as slaves - after some parents were shocked to find the event on their children's Black History Month calendar.

One parent, Ray Coleman, said that it wasn't appropriate and called the planned day a "mistake" and was glad that Cotton Picking Day was canceled, saying "I believe it's something that should be taught in history, but it shouldn't be relived."

Superintendent Annie Wimbish met with Coleman over his concerns and consulted with the Black History Committee before calling off the theme. Wimbish said the committee had no negative intentions with the day and has since replaced it with Career Day.

Question: In exchange for their political loyalty what have the Democrats given the blacks instead of jobs, an education, and a way out of the cities?

Think about it. The Democrats promise the blacks everything but all they have given them is more misery and shit and most useless of all...the benefits of political correctness.

Holy Shit, I just read upthread, is there really someone out there that hasn't heard that innocent phrase? It's not racist to anyone that's not trying to make it racist. PLENTY of white people picked cotton and many picked right along side blacks. Again, old movies and school text books shouldn't be your only source of information.

My dad always joked that he met my mother at the end of the cotton row. (Apparently that's where people shook down their bags, stretched and chatted). She never picked any but babysat while her mother worked in the fields during the depression. It wasn't but the very very poorest that would let their daughters into the fields. In fact, many white "cousins" would come from the "hills" during picking season and live in tents or in the barns to help bring in the harvest and make some cash.

Are there people out there who think that blacks did all the labor in the south and white people sat on their verandas sipping mint juleps and planning abuse? I suppose from what is taught in schools to the intellectually bankrupt, that they do indeed exist.

Fuckers.

My thoughts and experience exactly.  I'm from the Midwest and heard that term all my life; never thought there was racial intent behind it until I saw this thread.

I guess I was really sheltered, because I also never even heard of the term "porchmonkeys" until I saw Clerks 2, and "deigo" had to be explained to me when I was a sophomore in high school.

I think this is the case with some GenXers (I was born in '77)-- and I think that's fantastic, that in some social pockets, racial slurs are so far out of fashion that they aren't even heard anymore.

(Minor, isolated) case in point:  I sang in a choir while in college-- about 35 women or so.  The voice music majors, as a senior project, had to choose a choral piece and conduct us.  One girl found an early American song she liked, "Shortnin' Bread".  She told us to change "Mammy" to "Mama," which we did without question.  So she distributed the sheet music, and 35 women from all over the country began nonchalantly harmonizing the word "pickaninny" until the director stopped everything and gently explained that this was, um, not the most sensitive of words.  The voice major was mortified and  apologized about a zillion times.  It really was news to the rest of us, too.

There's more to that comparison.

Eli Whitney and his business partner Phineas Miller had decided to get into the ginning business themselves. They manufactured as many cotton gins as possible and installed them throughout Georgia and the southern states. They charged farmers an unusual fee for doing the ginning for them, two-fifths of the profits paid in cotton itself...

I think most people realize its not really a racist term, you know kind of like 99% of the criticisms about the president are not racist.  That sure hasn't stopped the shitbags like Sanchez from declaring them to be racist.  So if they've declared it a weapon, why not use it against them.  If they say they get to set the rules then they have to play by them too.

431 Presenting for you dining and dancing enjoyment! Rick Sanchez' new theme song! (take it away, boys!)

The Teleprompter has been drinking
My necktie's asleep
The corporate jet went back to New York, and left me all alone
The pressbox has to take a leak
Have you noticed that the carpet needs a haircut?
And the spotlight looks just like a prison break
And the telephone's out of cigarettes
As usual Helen Thomas on the make
And the Teleprompter has been drinking, heavily
The Teleprompter has been drinking
And he's on the hard stuff tonight

The Teleprompter has been drinking
And you can't find your morals
Even with the Geiger counter
The Teleprompter has been drinking
And the lightman's blind in one eye
And he can't see out of the other
And the soundstage jerk's got a hearing aid
And he showed up with his mother
The Teleprompter has been drinking

My co-host is this Sumo wrestler
Kinda cream puff Casper milk toast
And the owner is just a mental midget
With the I.Q. of a fencepost
And The Teleprompter has been drinking

The Teleprompter has been drinking
And the bar stools are all on fire
And all the newspapers were just fooling
And the ash-trays have retired
And I've got a feeling that the Teleprompter has been drinking
It's just a hunch
The Teleprompter has been drinking and he's going to lose his lunch
And the Teleprompter has been drinking
Not me, not me, The Teleprompter has been drinking not me...

(Minor, isolated) case in point:  I sang in a choir while in college-- about 35 women or so.  The voice music majors, as a senior project, had to choose a choral piece and conduct us.  One girl found an early American song she liked, "Shortnin' Bread".

@170: "this word is used because in the Age of Our Founding Fathers, when blacks were slaves, they were known to mostly pick cotton."

Mostly? Not historically, no. Cotton was a small-time crop until relatively shortly before the Civil War.  Most slaves in the New World worked sugar cane (Caribbean) and tobacco (US) crops.

447 I love how an MSM anchor using a "Hay Seed" expression to seem authentic and in touch with the American people is going to get his ass fired for... political incorrectness that the American people think is retarded. This is how you can tell that all attempts by the MSM to seem like they understand the American people are fake, because they don't actually care about the same things normal people do. Also public service/shameless plug. Friend of mine started a web service called notesforlater.com that puts a button in your bookmarks bar that lets you email yourself the webpage your are visiting with one click. Go check it out!

454 In our daily life, we pay more attention to our dress-up and life taste. In 2011 summer, we don't need to worry about it because summer clothing is always stylish and charming. However, we often feel annoyed in winter because those winter coats in general are heavy. Thus, we cannot show our personality and style during the winter time. However, when the canada goose label comes into our sights, we know that everything would be all right. It is because Canada goose clothing can bring us a stylish and charming look even under the brutal conditions.(yang)
