Rush Explains That Screaming Hissy Fit By Rep. Anthony Weiner
— Ace

Why were Republicans balking?

Because Democrats thought no one could vote against a bill that funded first-responders, and so attached pro-illegal-immigration measures to it.

More Detail: James Richardson explains in an editorial.

The House leadership had suspended typical procedures—requiring a simple majority—on the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009 in order to prevent GOP-offered amendments that they feared might compromise the votes of endangered Democrats.

Senior Democrats were concerned that Republicans might offer a motion to recommit — sending the bill back to committee with instructions to pay for it with funds from the president's health care reforms.

The Democrats’ procedural tack meant the bill needed two-thirds majority to pass — a large coalition that senior Democrats surely knew was untenable.

...

Instead, Democrats adopted a crudely partisan, morally repugnant tack by hiking the vote threshold for passage.

...

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who represents many of those who survived 9/11, summed up the situation: "They're afraid of taking a tough vote and as a result of that, they're willing to let cops and firefighters die."

I don't see any mention of illegal immigration measures -- I'm writing to him to clarify that.

Clarification: Richardson tells me the Democratic bill didn't forbid illegal aliens from qualifying for the aid contained in the package, and perhaps some Republicans wanted to block that from happening with an amendment. It was not, however, one of the stated objections the House Republican caucus floated.

5 Something needs to be done about the practice of legislative bills containing unrelated and/or contradictory provisions.

If our founding fathers knew that we were being enslaved by whiny sissy-fag Bolshevik-nihilist sodomites, like Anthony Wiener, married to double agent Islamist beards, like Huma Abedin, then they would be turning over in their graves.

11 Why were Republicans balking?

Because sadly, too many Republicans are quite apathetic about illegal immigration.

13 "Something needs to be done about the practice of legislative bills containing unrelated and/or contradictory provisions."

Most state constitutions have a "single-subject" provision.  The US Constitution does not.  It MIGHT be a good idea, but on the other hand, it would get the courts looking inside the legislative process, which is worrisome for robust separation of powers.

The House has a germaneness rule, but it applies only to amendments, and as I understand it, this bill was offered up as is from the start.

Like Kay Baily Hutchinson's defense bill which was larded up with amnesty two (three?) years ago.

The calendar changes, but the playbook stays the same.

We need to be relentless if we are to defeat th left.

In order to "clean up Washington" - Democrats would all have to step down.

We can't "defeat" the left.

The best we can hope for is to outlive them - for the red states to secede, and for the remaining blue states to shrivel up and die from demographic implosion.

20 The republicans have done the same duplicitous shit in the past though.  This is one of the sleazy things they need to be broken of if they want to hold the house in 2012.

The public is really getting sick and tired of this kind of chicanery.

I'd love to agree with you, but which "public?"

The average Joe (or Jose) Lunchbox doesn't understand the process at all. They hear Anthony Weenie ranting because evil Republicans want to tear money away from 9/11 first responders, accept that as truth, then go back to the Golf Channel or Skinemax.

Look at the polls: the fact that any sitting Congress-crook is generating any approval numbers, let alone winning many of their races, shows the depths of apathy and ignorance to which the general public has sunk.

If any incumbents win in November, we'll know the truth: disgust with what the out-of-touch, self-aggrandizing and dishonest jerks in the House and Senate is confined largely to readers of AoSHQ, some at Tepid Air, and fewer at other so-called conservative website.

30 Weiner knows exactly what he's doing, and King is a doofus for playing along with it.  Look how they were going to have separate segments, and then after Weiner got his whole segment to himself he horned in on King's segment and kept repeating his dumb percentages.  You can't play nice with these people.

39 I expect Hotair to link to politico because they are lazy milquetoasts, but not you Ace. I don't care if it is a good piece or not, as long as Mike Allen and Ben Smith are there, why give those commie-loving genital warts the clicks? Yes, I'm calling MA and BS genital warts, and even though not everyone over there is a genital wart yet, I'm sure a moron or two knows how easily they spread. So, until Politico gets some cream to remove them, they support the undermining of the news.
