— DrewM Oh boy.
>A South Korean naval vessel with more than 100 aboard was sinking on Friday in waters near North Korea and Seoul was investigating whether it was hit in a torpedo attack by the North, South Korean media said.Broadcaster SBS said many South Korean sailors on the stricken vessel were feared dead.
South Korea's YTN TV network said the government was investigating whether the sinking was due to a torpedo attack by the North, and Yonhap news agency said the Seoul government had convened an emergency meeting of security-related ministers.
Yonhap also reported a South Korean navy ship firing towards an unidentified vessel to the north.
We have about 30,000 troops stationed in South Korea so if anything starts, we are in it.
Thanks to Dave In Texas for the heads up.

You know what will come of this??
NOTHING.
North Korea has been provoking the world for as long as it existed, and we've done nothing. They used to abduct Japanese citizens in the 1970s.
All the nations in that area are just waiting for Kim to die and the nation to collapse from the inside.
the only thing that would provoke a military action would be if north korea attacked with ground troops, and we know they can'tt do that as all the troops would throw down their arms and defect to the south

Ben, why didn't you tell me you were a military genius? The NORK's don't need to invade to inflict a lot of damage. Seoul is within range of thousands of artillery canons. They can do a lot of damage in one hour without setting foot across the border. Oh, and they have nukes.
You don't have to be a military genius, just a functional retard, to know that you wouldn't fire missles, artillery, etc without sending ground troops in tow. What would be the point of attacking the south with cannons and not in conjunction with ground troops?

Yes, but Iraq was also under a cease-fire, and routinely violated the terms of that cease-fire. So, bluntly: that don't mean shit. Ronery Boy could order the shelling of Seoul and the reporters would be telling us how the South Koreans and American servicemen are stealing NorK property in the form of embedded shrapnel.

Especially since his plan of turning the USA into the USSA got a boost recently. And with the way Obama treated Israel, it is too much of a stretch to think that he wouldn't care too much if S. China cannot invade Taiwan. She doesn't have that kind of force projection capability or logistics yet. Now various Vietnamese and Philippine islands in the South China Sea - those could be targets. But, why, they can essentially buy them.
I had a friend in college a few years ago who was from Vietnam. His parents and family had to leave the country. He said the Chinese are taking Vietnam from the inside. They are making sure that mixed breeds(Vietnamese/Chinese) citizens get into government positions, and military positions. That way the government and military will be replete with pro-China Vietnamese.
Also, why would anyone want the philippine islands. Seriously? What is there value, I still to this day don't know

Damn Ben, you are a non-functional retard. How many days did we wait to soften up the Iraqi's in the first Gulf War? You don't think the Nork's would follow the same game plan? You know, like soften the target BEFORE committing troops? At some point you would follow up with troops but that is not what you said. You said that the only thing that would provoke a military action would be if ground troops crossed the border. I would argue a few thousand artillery shots and rockets WOULD provoke a military response WITHOUT committing troops across the border.

That's minor. If America truly wanted to leave South Korea we would, but the base has a more important purpose that actually defending against the Norks. If i am not mistaken, it is one of our two largest military bases in asia, and we might potentially lose our base in Japan thanks to the new douchebag in charge in their country and the one in ours.

No one is interested in a conflict with China, but I am interested in spying on them, as they are us. Wanting to know what a nation is doing militarily does not equal wanting to go to war with it.
And planes can do more in some areas that satellites cannot, otherwise we wouldn't still be using planes for spy missions. Do you remember the Hainan plane incident early on in the Bush admin. I know that plane took off from Japan, but I assume we do the same from Korea.

But another thing that weakens us is the fact that we're the world's scapegoat. There's no benefit to being our ally, and plenty of benefit to hassling us. We're the most charitable nation in the world, and everyone spits in our faces. I'm sick of it.
I'm not an isolationist. But nations that demonize us can live without our help for a while.

They're getting close, very very close. All their major acquisitions of the past 10 years have been oriented towards force projection and vastly increasing heavy sea-lift capacity.
Still, I don't think they'd actually do it. Taiwan would fall, but the PRC would pay a very heavy price.

I didn't advocate leaving Korea, or doing it all from satellite, or say anything about anti american sentiment. I said we need to be in Korea because of China, not necessarily because of the Norks who are more bluster than anything else.
Also, if i am not mistaken it is the one of the two largest American bases in Asia, the other being in Japan. If I am wrong please let me know.

Isn't South Korea sort of a spoiled, fat democracy now? Do they really want a fight with the North? If this ship really was sunk, I don't suspect too much national outrage from the citizens in the south. They don't seem much like fighters anymore. In fact, it would not be surprising if many in the South blame the sinking on some recent "provocation" by the United States regarding Kim Jong Il, or because we have troops there.

WASHINGTON—The Republican National Committee lost its bid to raise unlimited contributions from corporations and individuals banned by a 2002 campaign-finance law.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in Washington ruled Friday that it lacks the authority to overturn a Supreme Court ruling upholding the ban on soft money fund-raising by the RNC and other national party committees.
That ban is a cornerstone of the so-called McCain-Feingold law—and one of the few major parts of the law to survive court challenges.
The RNC had argued that it should be able to raise soft money for state election, congressional redistricting, legal costs and other activities that it said had nothing to do with federal elections.

Or, it could be an all out offensive in order to establish his power base and purge the opponents.

There are U-2's at Osan Air Base. And no, I'm not revealing anything new or secret. They've been there for many years and there's usually one in the air at all times. It can do things satellites cannot such as real time intel. The larger aircraft like the one in the Hainan incident are not stationed on the peninsula. The Navy presence is mostly aircraft carriers at sea and other assets off the peninsula. There is one naval base but I'm not sure what exactly is there. Our air assets are pretty much just Kunsan and Osan Air bases although they practice bringing in and bedding down other aircraft from around Asia all the time.

186 Yes and no (I taught some kids from SK -- they aren't all wimpy little fucksticks and they'd be willing to put up a good fight). China will most likely not be happy with this (comes at a bad time for them). Russia will be happy that China is discomfitted, but ultimately it irks them too (they're busy looking west and now mad Kim is behaving stupidly to the east...little beoytch). And then there are the Japanese -- who have been a bit tense over the situation in Asia lately anyway...and the Japanese have some hella good pilots....
Then there's the ideas this might give to nutjob -- whose hold on sanity I question strongly. I've always been of the opinion that Russia and China have stood behind these wacktards just to give the rest of the world a poke every so often...but hanging onto crazy people can oftentimes bite you in the ass (of course, it does no good for the people you poke either, but it bites you in the ass as well). And I think they're probably thinking the same thing about America dodging the bullet with that old guy and the snowbilly (one of the things they've counted on was at least an American president with nuts and sanity, but mainly nuts....ha ha).
And. here. we. go? Maybe; let's see how this plays out over the next 72 hourse (already phoned my kids and asked them how they liked the idea of Asia in the springtime -- they told me to sod off...lovingly).

The 1,500-ton ship "Cheonan" went down around 9:45 p.m. near a South Korean island in the Yellow Sea, and 58 of the 104 crew members on board have been rescued so far, navy officials said.

So you want to risk getting our guys into an all out war with a nuclear power (headed by a wacko) so we can have a marginally better spy-on-China effort? Doesn't seem like a good risk/reward trade-off to me.

Two IDF soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Friday evening, the IDF announced several hours after clashes occurred near the town of Khan Younis in the Strip.
Another soldier was seriously wounded in the incident and another one was lightly wounded.
One of the casualties was a high-ranking officer. The identity of the slain soldiers was not yet released for publications.
Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida told Hamas radio that IDF forces "fell into an ambush" set by Hamas terrorists east of Khan Younis. He did not elaborate.

Baroness Park Of Monmouth (she held the highest post in the SIS ever achieved by a woman) LINK
"Her acts of courage reaped rich rewards. She once smuggled Lumumba's private secretary to safety in the boot of her little Citroen 2CV. "[The car] was excellent cover," she said. "Nobody ever takes 2CVs seriously. But that's not why I had it – if they'd let me loose in anything bigger I'd have been lethal. My director once told me the bravest thing he'd ever done in his life was to be driven round by me." Lumumba's secretary subsequently became head of the Intelligence Service in the new government, and one of the most useful sources in Daphne Park's career."

1) Do you think this has anything to do with china's imminent hostile takeover of the US?
2) Do you really think that Obama will consider those 30K troops, put there by a previous administration, America's problem?

ot and re: the Hamas attack...well, here's an opportunity for Israel, no?
Barky may not support support Israel, like he should mind you, but I highly doubt he would be allowed to openly attack Israel if the Islamofacists start something (at some point our military does have a say so in these things, and Israel is far too strategically important to us to go all in for the other side...of course, this is el precedente and fiends we're talking about here). At worst perhaps a strongly worded, stern letter -- oh no, that would crush Bibi (again, that was snark).

Not to worry. If they make their ships like they make their cars, its engine probably overheated and melted its plastic hull.

Lee said an unexplained hole in the bottom of the ship caused the vessel to take on water. South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that the ship was damaged by an explosion, and said the military had not ruled out the possibility of an attack by North Korea.
Is that like unexpected?

Anyone want to take bets that Russia annexes the Baltic countries before the end of the Obama administration?
The Baltic countries are now in NATO. That would be a real test.
I think Putin will start with Georgia first.

This interprets two ways.
1. Two S.Korean vessels, one SKorean friendly fire on another.
2. One S.Korean vessel hit by N.Korean fire, and returns fire before sinking.

Obama will probably attempt to do the same, and is kicking himself for waiting around.
He sides with the bad guys. Every fucking time. I have good friends in Area 1 in Korea, so I sure hope this doesn't blow up. There was something like this when I was stationed there... they have a lot of naval disputes, but this is taking it to the next level.
It's too late in the year for North Korea to invade, so I think they expect the good guys to not interpret this as an imminent invasion. But there is a tremendous capability to kill millions of people without an invasion. Why? Because of the insanity of North Korea. Our strategic position is excellent and North Korea would have no chance of winning the war, even if we had equal air forces (obviously we have the upper hand there too), but that doesn't matter to the elites who want to hold millions of South Koreans hostages for more goodies.

Ships don't simply explode while in close proximity to hostile territory. Holes don't form below the water line for an "accident".
The hull of a modern combat vessel is strong enough to handle internal detonations of engines, boilers, and magazine safety precautions in a modern navy are extremely high.
The reason people are now saying this is an accident? Nobody wants to deal with the implications of it being a real attack.
I wonder if they'll try to explain away the next ship loss as a random collision with a whale.

@336 Alexander, couldn't agree more: the curtain has been 'wrung down' on this one. A bone of contention: the skin of patrol vessels is not strong enough to contain a major engine incident. Generally, the hulls of all modern warships are pitiable.
I'll go ahead and mention Cole.

Both sides have always considered themselves one people. As the PRC liberalizes and develops a middle class, the reasons for the split will become less and less. It may take the last of the old guard in both countries dying off before serious reunification will take place though.
I'd give it maybe a 20-30 year horizon.
