S. Korean Navy Ship Sinking, Possibly Attacked By N. Korea
— DrewM

Oh boy.

>A South Korean naval vessel with more than 100 aboard was sinking on Friday in waters near North Korea and Seoul was investigating whether it was hit in a torpedo attack by the North, South Korean media said.

Broadcaster SBS said many South Korean sailors on the stricken vessel were feared dead.

South Korea's YTN TV network said the government was investigating whether the sinking was due to a torpedo attack by the North, and Yonhap news agency said the Seoul government had convened an emergency meeting of security-related ministers.

Yonhap also reported a South Korean navy ship firing towards an unidentified vessel to the north.

We have about 30,000 troops stationed in South Korea so if anything starts, we are in it.

Thanks to Dave In Texas for the heads up.

You know what will come of this??

NOTHING.

North Korea has been provoking the world for as long as it existed, and we've done nothing.  They used to abduct Japanese citizens in the 1970s.

All the nations in that area are just waiting for Kim to die and the nation to collapse from the inside.

the only thing that would provoke a military action would be if north korea attacked with ground troops, and we know they can'tt do that as all the troops would throw down their arms and defect to the south

I had a friend in college a few years ago who was from Vietnam. His parents and family had to leave the country. He said the Chinese are taking Vietnam from the inside. Shooting between the Koreas isn't exactly unheard of, so I'm not going to freak out.  Legally speaking, the war never ended:  it's just a 57-year ceasefire.

But, yeah, I'd rather have McCain at the helm right now.

Exactly. This stuff happens often(maybe no on this scale if the death count reaches the double digits).  There will be a strongly worded letter or speech, nothing more.

A good reason to leave. South Korea can handle its own affairs.

Yes, because the sight of American withdrawal in the face of totalitarian provocation does wonders for world stability.  And there is the small matter of the whole treaty thing.

You're right, we can't remove troops now, but South Korea is a strong country with a powerful military. The only reason we are there is that it allows us to have a military base so close to mainland china.  The south could win a conflict on its own.

If you're afraid of leaving during totalitarian provocation, wait until this blows over - as it almost assuredly will - and THEN leave. As for the treaty, it does not serve our interests; cut it loose.

Can anyone explain to me why we would want our boys to die in a renewed Korean war? What interest do we have there at this point? Is South Korea, with its much larger economy and better equipped military, unable to handle its northern neighbor?

And that whole treaty thing.

That's minor. If America truly wanted to leave South Korea we would, but the base has a more important purpose that actually defending against the Norks. If i am not mistaken, it is one of our two largest military bases in asia, and we might potentially lose our base in Japan thanks to the new douchebag in charge in their country and the one in ours.

So we can't leave for reasons besides the treaty.

No one is interested in a conflict with China, but I am interested in spying on them, as they are us. Wanting to know what a nation is doing militarily does not equal wanting to go to war with it.

And planes can do more in some areas that satellites cannot, otherwise we wouldn't still be using planes for spy missions. Do you remember the Hainan plane incident early on in the Bush admin. I know that plane took off from Japan, but I assume we do the same from Korea.

165 Some History   Source: Reuters

The following are border incidents over the past several years between the states, which are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended with a ceasefire and not a peace treaty:

Dec. 18, 1998 - South Korean navy sinks submersible North Korean spy vessel on east coast. A scuba diver from the North is found dead.

June 1999 - At least 17 and as many as 80 North Korean sailors killed in naval firefight over Northern Limit Line (NLL), a west coast, Yellow Sea border contested by the North. One of the North's vessels was sunk, others damaged.

Clash followed nine days of incursions by the North into South Korean waters.

June 29, 2002 - A clash between South and North Korean naval vessels in Yellow Sea sinks one South Korean frigate and kills six South Korean sailors and an estimated 13 North Koreans.

July 17, 2003 - South Korea says its troops returned machinegun fire a minute after the North shot at an observation post in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) buffer between the states.

May 26, 2006 - Two North Korean soldiers enter DMZ and cross into South Korea. They return after South fires warning shots.

July 11, 2008 - South Korean tourist, a 53-year-old housewife, shot dead by North Korean soldier at the Mount Kumgang resort in the North, which is run by companies in the South.

Nov. 10, 2009 - Two Koreas have brief naval fight just south of the NLL that causes damage to vessels on both sides.

Jan. 27, 2010 - Two Koreas exchange artillery fire near the NLL sea border.

March 26, 2010 - South Korean navy ship sinks near disputed Yellow Sea maritime border off the west coast.

WASHINGTON—The Republican National Committee lost its bid to raise unlimited contributions from corporations and individuals banned by a 2002 campaign-finance law.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in Washington ruled Friday that it lacks the authority to overturn a Supreme Court ruling upholding the ban on soft money fund-raising by the RNC and other national party committees.

That ban is a cornerstone of the so-called McCain-Feingold law—and one of the few major parts of the law to survive court challenges.

The RNC had argued that it should be able to raise soft money for state election, congressional redistricting, legal costs and other activities that it said had nothing to do with federal elections.

Since Subic closed Osan maybe #2 in East Asia; all of stuff in SW Asia dwarfs RoK at this point. Okinawa and Kadena are "large" - but "large" is sort of a meaningless term - the facilities at Kunsan and Osan have a different purpose and Camp Red Cloud and all of various Army huts are going to be empty if the balloon goes up. The strategic importance of Korea is immeasurable - the NOrk inspired student protests are a game at this point - the real pressure is on the US for land rights and development in areas we feel are essential to winning a war. The opposition in RoK basically feels the war will never happen and Kim will die and a great big group hug will ensue.

So China may or may not have initiated this (but I gotta believe that they would have approved..?) and this is a little saber rattling to distract and divert as he gets his son to shore up his power base.

Or, it could be an all out offensive in order to establish his power base and purge the opponents.

We can't assume it will blow over like it always has. This time their internal politics may require a more serious conflict...

Now, buying a bunch of votes in the Taiwanese legislature - absolutely. I would put a Chinese invasion of one of the 'Stans or Siberia higher on the list; as well as a renewed scrap with Vietnam or India. If things don't improve soon the PLA may have to go back to killing large numbers of their own soon.

There are U-2's at Osan Air Base. And no, I'm not revealing anything new or secret. They've been there for many years and there's usually one in the air at all times. It can do things satellites cannot such as real time intel. The larger aircraft like the one in the Hainan incident are not stationed on the peninsula. The Navy presence is mostly aircraft carriers at sea and other assets off the peninsula. There is one naval base but I'm not sure what exactly is there. Our air assets are pretty much just Kunsan and Osan Air bases although they practice bringing in and bedding down other aircraft from around Asia all the time.

186  Yes and no (I taught some kids from SK -- they aren't all wimpy little fucksticks and they'd be willing to put up a good fight).  China will most likely not be happy with this (comes at a bad time for them).  Russia will be happy that China is discomfitted, but ultimately it irks them too (they're busy looking west and now mad Kim is behaving stupidly to the east...little beoytch).  And then there are the Japanese -- who have been a bit tense over the situation in Asia lately anyway...and the Japanese have some hella good pilots....

Then there's the ideas this might give to nutjob -- whose hold on sanity I question strongly.  I've always been of the opinion that Russia and China have stood behind these wacktards just to give the rest of the world a poke every so often...but hanging onto crazy people can oftentimes bite you in the ass (of course, it does no good for the people you poke either, but it bites you in the ass as well).  And I think they're probably thinking the same thing about America dodging the bullet with that old guy and the snowbilly (one of the things they've counted on was at least an American president with nuts and sanity, but mainly nuts....ha ha).

And. here. we. go?  Maybe; let's see how this plays out over the next 72 hourse (already phoned my kids and asked them how they liked the idea of Asia in the springtime -- they told me to sod off...lovingly).

267 Anyone who's seriously interested in this story ought to start with a map of the Korean peninsula, which alone reveals something, and then consider what gives with the island of Byeongryeong, which is at the center of the story. The island is quite a ways north and west from the mainland parts of South Korea, but actually less than ten miles from the mainland of North Korea. There are waters disputes all along the west side of the peninsula, but none of them are anywhere near as controversial as with this island. It kinda brings to mind the Falklands tussle between Argentina and the Brits, if the Falklands were actually located right offshore from a major Argentinian city/military complex, and the islands themselves were co-occupied entirely by troops from a local enemy nation and British military intel types. Closer to home, it also kinda brings to mind the early 1960s when the former Soviet Union had a big presence in Cuba, except with Cuba dragged sixty or so miles closer to south Florida, and in reverse of course. Confrontational incidents, including potshots, is pretty much a daily thing along the S.K./N.K. border lands and waters, but most particularly in these waters between the S.K./U.S. occupied island and the N.K. mainland shore. Really, what's remarkable, in terms of defying odds, is not this incident, but the fact of how rarely this TYPE of daily incident has NOT resulted in this sort of loss of life and damage.

Two IDF soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Friday evening, the IDF announced several hours after clashes occurred near the town of Khan Younis in the Strip.

Another soldier was seriously wounded in the incident and another one was lightly wounded.

One of the casualties was a high-ranking officer. The identity of the slain soldiers was not yet released for publications.

Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida told Hamas radio that IDF forces "fell into an ambush" set by Hamas terrorists east of Khan Younis. He did not elaborate.

Barky may not support support Israel, like he should mind you, but I highly doubt he would be allowed to openly attack Israel if the Islamofacists start something (at some point our military does have a say so in these things, and Israel is far too strategically important to us to go all in for the other side...of course, this is el precedente and fiends we're talking about here). At worst perhaps a strongly worded, stern letter -- oh no, that would crush Bibi (again, that was snark).

323 In case y'all didn't recall, Jimmy Carter tried to get the US troops out of Korea.  Not sure how he failed, being the CinC, but thank God he did, because the US presence is why South Korea is a vibrant and great nation.

Obama will probably attempt to do the same, and is kicking himself for waiting around.

He sides with the bad guys.  Every fucking time.  I have good friends in Area 1 in Korea, so I sure hope this doesn't blow up.  There was something like this when I was stationed there... they have a lot of naval disputes, but this is taking it to the next level.

It's too late in the year for North Korea to invade, so I think they expect the good guys to not interpret this as an imminent invasion.  But there is a tremendous capability to kill millions of people without an invasion.  Why?  Because of the insanity of North Korea.  Our strategic position is excellent and North Korea would have no chance of winning the war, even if we had equal air forces (obviously we have the upper hand there too), but that doesn't matter to the elites who want to hold millions of South Koreans hostages for more goodies.

330 A cloak of deception is being pulled down around this event.

Ships don't simply explode while in close proximity to hostile territory. Holes don't form below the water line for an "accident".

The hull of  a modern combat vessel is strong enough to handle internal detonations of engines, boilers, and magazine safety precautions in a modern navy are extremely high.

The reason people are now saying this is an accident? Nobody wants to deal with the implications of it being a real attack.

I wonder if they'll try to explain away the next ship loss as a random collision with a whale.

@336 Alexander, couldn't agree more: the curtain has been 'wrung down' on this one. A bone of contention: the skin of patrol vessels is not strong enough to contain a major engine incident. Generally, the hulls of all modern warships are pitiable.

I'll go ahead and mention Cole.

Both sides have always considered themselves one people.  As the PRC liberalizes and develops a middle class, the reasons for the split will become less and less.  It may take the last of the old guard in both countries dying off before serious reunification will take place though.

Having an accident in those waters doesn't survive Occam's razor - but it makes a good cover story until things calm down.
