It's a damn shame the Jets are out of it. We really have a shortage of obnoxious New Yorkers down here in Miami to make Superbowl week a fargin nightmare for the locals. I doubt the rowdies from Indianapolis are up to it.
If the Saints make it will anyone be watching the SB? I know the wife will have the Kitteh Bowl on no matter what, so in our house it makes no difference.

It called sports writing, Drew. They write about quarterbacks. Really, they do.
Why? Damn if I know, something about quarterbacks always get to touch the ball more than the other players.
Doesn't seem fair does it? Maybe "The One" could change the rules next year.

It's nothing that ten grand and a week off work wouldn't take care of.

Aikman has some annoying habits (such as inserting 'what' and 'to where' into every other sentence) but I actually think he's a pretty good color commentator compared to a lot of the former players (like Collinsworth).

13 If the Vikings do win, Favre needs to legally change his name to "Forty Year-old Brett Favre," because that's how every sports reporter is going to refer to him.
Too bad they won't get to talk about him being the oldest player in the super bowl along with it. As they mentioned during the Colts game, their kicker Stover will be 42 years 11 days old on the super bowl.

>Why is that bad?
>(He's actually first-generation American; parents emigrated from Haiti before he was born.)
I believe concern was being voiced regarding the overdramaticization of team/player histories in the run up to (especially pregame for) the Superbowl. Instead of just two weeks on Katrina, imagine two weeks on Katrina and Haiti. And bear in mind the Superbowl is going to be on the famously fair and balanced CBS.

Maybe if they win the SB this year the networks will stop pushing the Katrina stuff.
Personally, I think N.O. should be ashamed at how effed up they've been on the recovery. It's embarrassing to have a major U.S. city that's functioning little better than a third world country.

The Commish.
It's asinine. You can't tell me that they lose fan interest for the Super Bowl in those two weeks and, moreover, for those of us who are real football fans, ensuring that the best players won't play really kills the interest in the Pro Bowl. Plus, I like seeing the broadcast, and the skills competition, from Hawaii.

I don't think so.
I think they moved it to generate more interest in the Pro Bowl.
Perhaps with the economy down, Hawaii was a bad location, and by having it next week in Miami they think there will be more interest.
I think it's stupid.
What they need to do is make incentives for the players to perform well. I'd try some kind of incentives for statistical performance... most passing yards, receiving, scores, or whatever.
Even if you moved it off the Island, I'd put it on the opposite coast from the Super Bowl.

3 I'm all about Indy and Peyton, but why the hell does CBS have to show the Manning home videos everytime Nantz broadcasts a Colts game? Seriously, I have seen that footage at least 25 times over the last 5 years. And I am willing to wager $50 that CBS uses the footage again for its Superbowl intro.
As someone from Indiana, I think it's pretty much time for the Anchors from ALL networks to quit inadvertantly referring to "The Baltimore Colts"....and yes, they still do. Sommerall and Madden are both muliple repeat offenders.
In a conversation with Gov. Mitch Daniels last month I suggested he institute a "fine" of $5,000 (increasing in $5K increments for repeats) for any announcer making that mistake, with the proceeds going to a charity of Mitch's choice. We both agreed that if it happened you'd probably see Madden or Ditka or some other overpaid douchebag commentator do it deliberately just so they could pony up and "apologize" while "paying up" in front of a camera. Knowing full well that $5K would get them national face time on all the networks which is a heck of a lot cheaper than a SuperBowl Commercial Minute.
Indy stole nothing. Baltimore drove them out. If Baltimore had built the facility the Colts needed they'd still be there today. Baltimore refused, and it cost them 3 times the loss to build that facility and buy a NEW NFL franchise. Meanwhile the whole midwest worships the Indianpolis Colts.

I for one share your sentiment,...to a point. I'd also enjoy living on the gulf coast in an historically democrat controlled utopian wonderland. I would probably be somewhat discouraged by the fact it is square in the middle of a VERY well known hurricane zone. Add to that the fact much of it is below sea level and the "leadership" has spent money meant to modernize the levee system buying votes to keep themselves in power and Kat gets at least predictable if not inevitable. Human tragedy is,...well,..tragic. What it isn't is an excuse to blame everybody else for the problem, resist working to contribute to resolution and then bitch some more.

JenBee, I'm playing the world's smalles violin for your "I still have family members who are paying a mortgage on a piece of slab where their house used to be." Perhaps they didn't insure their home?
Let's see what we have here....an American city NOT destroyed by hurricane failure, but by levee breach. A levee that the Army corps of engineers said needed reinforcing. The federal government gave money to be dedicated to fixing the levees. Money that was squandered by the Democrat political machine down there. the money was gone and nothing got fixed.
I have to ask myself. Would I live in a city that is almost entirely below sea level, yet surrounded by water, and NOT have flood insurance????
Socially liberal me would never deign to tell your family they couldn't live there, but fiscally conservative me don't think it's my problem nor my responsiblilty to pay endlessly for corruption and stupidity of others.

JenBee, don't listen to them. They obviously haven't got a clue about New Orleans and its many wonderful people. All they can think about are the thugs the news kept showing in the aftermath of Katrina. And maybe they don't understand that the maximum amount of flood insurance often wasn't enough to cover the property damage done by the storm. Even if you and I are the only ones celebrating the Saints' victory here at AOSHQ, let's enjoy it. They're probably Patriots fans.

I'll take 100 Landrieus, and 100 Nagins, before I will take one Al Franken. Yes, it is too much to expect that every election goes the way I'd prefer. And it is too much to expect that locals who are dealing with intractable, entrenched political machines will be able to throw it off with ease. Southern Lousiana is an historic basketcase.
But usually they only hurt themselves, and God help 'em. In the end they got crossed up in the path of the inevitable hurricane that overwhelmed them, one every observer of southern Louisiana saw coming, and the results were completely unsurprising. Note: the press corps are not in the realm of the informed, ironically. They are clueless and the whole fiasco came as a rude shock to them.
But, never at any time did southern Louisiana do anything but elect a sorry, race gaming mayor, like so many urban centers. Never did they do anything but elect another Landrieu, whose family was pedigreed to an extent in southern Louisiana political history. A Kennedy effect, to a lesser degree - liberal dynasty.
Louisiana did not send a Marxist-minded president a supermajority in Congress, and in the hands of Al Franken, a known charlatan whose asshole factor is visible from low earth orbit. No, Louisiana did not insult and endanger this nation in this fashion.
Minnesota did. And we should be thankful Minnesota's team lost tonight. And, despite the bad blood over Katrina and how shamelessly it was played against us, we should take wry comfort that a big part of why the New Orleans Saints have come back from disaster is a running back named BUSH.

Favre really blew it last play of the 4th quarter though. It was the Vikings game to loose up until the very end... which they did.
It was really almost like the Vikings offense collectively choked.
Good on the Saints with their first appearance EVAH coming up in the Super Bowl. Best of luck to them... because I don't think Manning is gonna choke for them.

And maybe they don't understand that the maximum amount of flood insurance often wasn't enough to cover the property damage done by the storm. Most of what i saw were crapshacks typical of democrat controlled inner cities worth less than most working peoples automobiles. pretty weak point.
Even if you and I are the only ones celebrating the Saints' victory here at AOSHQ, let's enjoy it. They're probably Patriots fans. Shark jump. You are far from the only ones here enjoying a well deserved victory, merely the only ones attempting to connect it to an avoidable human disaster that was and continues to be an avoidable anchor around the neck of the rest of the nation.
Posted by: Modgi at January 24, 2010 07:14 PM (c96aC)
Whatever. Disaster can happen anywhere, but living in a fishbowl surrounded by water held back by unsound levees isn't one of them. That is called predictable. I live where tornado's are a nine month threat, but so far, so good.
I would not live on the side of a mountain in california, due to the wildfire containment policies of the environuts. If the fire doesn't get you, the mudslides will. Wait a minute....I guess I would make sure I had adequate insurance before I would contemplate living there. Part of the cost of living for a particular area, no?
I also wouldn't live on a major faultline, or on an Atlantic coastline, or within the first levee of a major river......not without being personally financially responsible. Too tough to figure out?

Little known fact, Baton Rouge was beat to hell by Gustav. Ya'd never know it by watching the national news. They don't pay attention to folks fixin' stuff for themselves. Same scenario with Katrina and Mississippi.
Posted by: shrew_tamer at January 24, 2010 07:21 PM (4YwSt)
In my experience ('94 Northidge quake), the insurance was very helpful. Of course, it only covered what we paid it to cover, but we were in far better shape than the idiots who live here in the quake zone and don't bother to carry it.

On Katrina notes:
Immediately when Katrina hit a crapton of Bubbas, in their old pickup trucks with 200,000+ miles on the them no less, mobilized to cut their way into New Orleans, because that's what you had to do. Downed trees, crap all over the road, etc. They got to New Orleans in 15 or so hours. Amazing stuff. Many of them totally unpaid, just doing what they felt called to do.
They didn't stop there, either. They turned up in Mississippi.
Of course when they got there, coming in behind them on the roads they cleared, the government mobilizers began organizing relief efforts, and here is the problem. At the end of the day the most heroic set of rescuers were the military, and the Louisiana Fish and Wildlife Service (again, largely a bunch of dudes out there in old pickup trucks doing heroic things).
The critique was that Bush couldn't coordinate the federal response, but we had two problems. One, the federal response is quite dependent on the local governments and the local governments had essentially collapsed. Two, the amazing lethargy of large bureaucracies. Both these factors put Bush at a huge disadvantage because the press corps got down there, saw the governmental dysfunction first hand, and thought that must be Bush's fault when in fact it is an institutional problem. Bush was President of the United States, couldn't he wave his magic wand?
Now,
how is that magic wand working in Haiti?
Huh?
How is that magic wand doing?
100,000 dead vs. 1,000 dead.
How is that magic wand working?
I pray that the bubbas out there driving the old pickup trucks don't say, "Fuck it. Remember Katrina." the next time one of these things happen.
Posted by: Cowboy at January 24, 2010 07:37 PM (zwrlc)
If by "magic" you mean military, and by "wand" you mean occupation,..then i'd say you imperialist pigs are git'n er done.

The media hordes were all in NO for that storm, looking for more human tradjedy. Well, it took a turn for the worse [to them] and put the "dirty side" of the storm too far west in Baton Rouge to make a proper sob story. What a damned shame when one can take care of themselves and those around them to boot. No story there.

In the meantime- those of us who both are New Orleanians and football fans would rather talk about the fact that the Saints are finally good.
So hey- don't let me stop you, One Eyed Jack and others. My family took care of our own business and didn't look to the feds for help. So come tell me to take care of my own shit. Come on and do it.
You want to talk about how corrupt Orleans Parish is? Tell me about it- I fucking lived it, asswipe. None of us who've lived it have any illusions about it. I fucking worked for Ray Nagin. You think I'm not acutely aware of it?
As far as living there goes- hey, I live in DFW now because that's where my wife's gig is, and there are definitely good reasons extraneous to that that we're not there. Again, you hear about the assholes who couldn't be bothered to take care of their own business. So how about the remainder who did take care of their own business? Come tell me some shit about them now. Come on and tell me.
Pursuant to the thugs we shipped out- particularly to Houston- what can I say? Bottom line- there's been a lot of bitching on this thread about politicizing a football game. So now that you've ventilated your spleen about shit that nobody on this thread has any control over- do you mind desperately if we enjoy a victory in a great football game? Would that be entirely too much to ask?

A game the fans of both teams will be talking about for years to come. Lots of blame to go around on the Vikes side by players and coaches. The game probably would have been won if they hadn't gotten cute with the confusing offensive looks and ended up with the procedure penalty for 12 men in the huddle that took them out of Longwell's range. Then again, 11 years ago they were in the same situation with a kicker who hadn't missed all year.......
As for cowboy's anger about Franken. it would be best to aim it at those who ae really culpable rather than every Vikings fan. After all, I am a fan and I haven't lived in that state in 30 years. I am talking about people like ACORN, SEIU, the corrupt Secretrary of State who mangled the recount and most particularly those 15% or so of the Minnesota electorate who voted for the Independence party candidate.
How much fraud was there? My mother, then in the late stages of dementia, managed to cast a vote from her nursing home. I never changed her voter registration to there when we sold her house. She didn't do it herself. She didn't know what day of the week it was mich less that an election was being held.

Hats off over a truly great game. This one was a classic, and the Vikings are a great team and will remain a great team, Favre or no Favre. I'm proud to carry out another New Orleans tradition of buying the visiting team's fans a round of drinks (even if it is up here in DFW) over the next couple of days.
Favre is one tough mutha fighting off what looked like a nearly broken ankle, and you guys damn near won despite the mistakes. As has been said repeatedly on the Times-Picayune's website (the New Orleans paper), hold your heads high. We've lost so damn many of these close games that the Saints fans I'm with are still in shock.
Hugs from the Who Dats- no kidding.

I'm from Dallas, but the first football team I played on was the Spring Valley Vikings, complete with purple and gold. So I was a Viking fan and a Cowboy fan, and these were the days of Fran Tarkenton. Now, those were football games back then, when you could barely see the field because of the snow.
I was there in the stands one day when the Dallas Cowboys knocked the Minnesota Vikings out of the Superbowl hunt. That day in Texas Stadium a Viking fan had fashioned and put on a snowman suit, and somebody in the seat behind him had brought an improvised space-heater (winters in Big D can be surprisingly cold sometimes). The snowman suit caught on fire and the fellow burned to death in a tragedy that enveloped the Cowboy victory that day, and it struck me passionately. It seemed wrong that the Cowboys won that day, given the enormity of the Minnesota fan's tragedy. The Cowobys went on to contend for the Superbowl that year, I think, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers. If any good thing can come of it, I thought at the time, may at least the Minnesota Vikings have great success in the future, in honor of this fan's memory.
So, here's to you, Minnesota Vikings fans, for a good run and a great year. I still have that hope that the Vikings will have times of greatness. But, for the love of God Himself, get your act together. Stunts like Al Franken are not cute, they do not reflect positively on the quirky independence of the Minnesota voter. Get serious, because these are serious times.
Don't give me that shit with Al Franken. Who can respect that?
Meanwhile, lassiez les bon temps roulet!

Yes Katrina sucked for NO, but it sucked even more for the MS Gulf coast and Chalmette (Plaquamines Parish). They actually took the hit from the storm surge, yet you didn't really here them bitching and moaning the way NO residents did. 50+ billion dollars later NO is still a shithole.
Even tonight's teh suck Saints should be able to beat the Colts.

Even tonight's teh suck Saints should be able to beat the Colts.
Not sure of that. I think what you're going to end up with is both team's defenses playing their offense with some minor differences. The Saints do have more of a running game than the Colts. The Colts have an onfield offensive coordinator. They are both pretty much high scoring passing offenses with multiple threats at receiver. Its not just going to be shut down their number 1 and 2 options and you'll be good to go. Hell that's what the Jets did against the Colts.
So can the Saints use their running game to stay on the field longer to score more than the Colts? Or will Peyton have the defense's number by the second quarter and proceed to chew them up? I don't know but I don't think you're right because the Colts aren't going to have the turnovers the Vikings did. It will be a good game I think.
