— Dave in Texas Morning Morons. It's a lovely day in Central Texas, and by that I mean overcast and cool, which ain't normal for early July round these parts.
Here's a couple things to check out over coffee and aspirin.
A masterful takedown of Glenn Greenwald's outrageous distortions and outright lies, despite evidence, facts and the friggin obvious regarding the Israeli Gaza flotilla "incident". My favorite line: "the weakness of his case is measured by the degree to which he is compelled to lie about it." [via TheRickWilson]
Why the Obama Administration's challenge to Arizona's SB1070 could stall any chance of passing immigration reform. Hint: it's because it pisses people off I think, and you sorta need them unengaged to pull it off.
Boeing and EADS formally jump back in to the mess that is the USAF refueling aircraft RFP. Meanwhile we'll continue to refuel our warfighters in the sky using 50 year old 707s with 20 year old engines on em (hey, they're quieter at least). Oh, here's a nice little story about a couple of pilots who met in one of these chance encounters, were smitten by the experience, and decided to get hitched. [I caught this one a few days ago from one of the Hostages] (although those of you who remember the opening credits in Dr. Strangelove may wonder about the gender/joke confusion since the pilot of the tanker is the lovely bride)
And if you don't remember those, here you go. Bonus breakfast burrito for first person who can name that tune. With jalapenos.
Last one, I broke down and decided to check out the iPhone 4. Will give you a moron review later this weekend, but right now I'll just say "ooo.. cool". Also time elapsed from online order to active phone was 2.7 days. Not too shabby. Incidentally, those of you who have a 3GS can download the 4.0 iOS, which will give you multitasking and a very cool new "fast scroll" feature for long comment threads in posts other than this one.
Dump a little Valu-rite in your coffee, and start your day off like you mean it.

Make no mistake, Obama jumped into his term with both feet. If we learned anything from Obama it's that he does not care about the will of the people.

We should be relieved that Obama is an absolutely awful partner with his congressional majority. Had he half the skills he thinks he has, we would be hurtling over the cliff already.
Yeah. Our saving grace is that between the slobbering press and Obama believing them, he campaigned and got elected before he had anywhere near the experience and savvy to handle the presidency.

Speaking of Androids and baseball and trying to move the All Star Game from AZ, I woke up this morning to an email on my HTC Driod Eris from Sheriff Joe (the real one in AZ) regarding La Raza putting together a movement to move the game from Phoenix, along with a link to sign a petition to stop "The Race" from doing so. You might be of a mind to sign such a petition, so here's the link:

It depends on why they went to DC. The people who live two different lives, one among their constituents and another within the beltway, only one is a lie. We have seen enough of Sarah Palin to know who she is.
If conservatives seem to think she is best baking cookies, making phone calls and endorsing candidates, then give her an office and the golden Rolodex and see what she can do for the movement. Any responsibility entrusted in her by the establishment burnishes her own credentials.

I'm sure they're "considering" it, as any business would, but it won't happen. Baseball's audience is definitely slanted toward the pro-Arizona side of the immigration issue, although not as much as one might expect. Here's a great article and graph about the political leanings of sports fans.

It just bothers me that the RNC is so useless while we have the most important midterm elections of all time upon us. Palin writes these Facebook posts, but imagine her doing something in an official capacity. I know she's enjoying her "outsider" status as leader of the rebel forces, but I would like to see her a bit more serious. I think she's obviously smart and capable.

I agree with you, Tattoo.
Taking over the RNC isn't necessary for Palin's 'career', but it sure would/could help the GOP get its act together. I think she could do it for a couple of years without losing her soul to the Beltway, meanwhile she'd make connections and help ensure the GOP insiders start paying attention to what the rest of us want to see happen.
It would benefit us more than her, but that's the whole point. Why give up on the RNC when we have someone who could change it?

I'm on Verizon and really like it (I have an older enV), especially the VZ Nav system which has bailed me out on many occasions when I get lost, but I need to go to a real smart phone. Mr. Y-not has a G3 iPhone. Many nice apps, but I'm not crazy about the camera interface and he has no voice-over nav system (I want something that talks, not just a mapping function).
Anyone out there have a Verizon-based smart phone they love?

The RNC Chairman has very little power and for the most part is prohibited from doing some things, like intervening in a contested primary.
Meanwhile someone like Sarah can come in and endorse the Candidate that she thinks is the most conservative. That is what happened here in SC when she came in an endorsed Haley. Haley went from last place to first place solely on the support of that endorsement.
The RNC chair would have been prohibited from endorsing Haley.
Nope, I like Sarah right where she is now.

The RNC is useless as tits on a bull, and has been for YEARS. It's still the same old Tom Delay/ Abramoff outfit that caused Republicans to lose Congress. It needs a purge, and fast.
Posted by: Ombudsman at July 10, 2010 07:13 AM (y4B2y)
What type of sway do the major donors to the RNC hold over the tone of the organization? In most non-profits (I realize that's not this but still) the major donors influence things -- they don't "run" things, but they do wind up establishing priorities and influencing key decisions.
If Palin were RNC chair, wouldn't she bring a new set of conservative donors into the RNC fold and wouldn't that shift the RNC's focus?
We keep talking about the RNC like it's a problem, which implies it does hold power, but then throw up our hands like it can't change. Why not have faith that Palin could change it from the inside?
After all, if she re-enters government at some point, she would give up her outsider status, as all of our elected officials do. Being an outsider is helpful, but ultimately we need to change the insiders.

The tomatoes and peppers are the best ever.
We Planted a "Yellow Submarine" tomato vine.
The ones you pay $4.00 a qt at the store. We're getting a pint twice a day now.
Cherokee Purples and Beefsteaks round out the lot.
Banana Peppers and Bell Peppers are amazingly tender this year due to all the rain.
It's a shame I can't eat bread and Bacon anymore.

From what I have seen not much. As I said the Party rules are established at the national convention and that controls until the next national convention.
Personally I think it is set up to assure that the NE Rockefeller wing maintains control. Look at the long term trends. 2 conservative nominations in a 100 years is not a good track record.
Posted by: Vic at July 10, 2010 07:17 AM (/jbAw)
The iPhone apps that Mr. Y-not has that I think are cool are things like ones that have to do with hiking/trailmarking, a parking spot locator, a music identifier (really cool... it "listens" to whatever song is playing, say at a restaurant or something, and finds it at iTunes), some other fun nature ones (such as a Petersen's Guide to bird calls)). We're not into games so much.
I also like that his iPhone docks into our iPod speakers and that he has his iTunes integrated. I freely admit we're Mac people, so I want to like the iPhone, but his camera takes a lot of out of focus (across the plane of the image) pix and it doesn't have a talking Nav system. Plus, his call coverage doesn't seem as good as mine (in SoCal).
I'm going to hold off until we live in Utah for a couple of months, but I'm leaning toward sticking with Verizon (if the reception is good). Maybe I'll consider an iPhone if Verizon ever picks it up.

Also, that was the local AK Republican Party, not national. They are entirely different.
Also I would like to point out that you can not make comparisons between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.
The Democrat Party is much more centralized and controlled from the National level. And that is not a good thing either. That is how they pushed Obama through despite the fact that party wide, Hillary was more popular. (Note: It was the "super delegates" that got Obama the nod)

You know, Michael Steele himself reliably keeps making himself the issue every month or so. It's one thing after another with him, and this last gaffe put him in dangerous water. The one area in which conservatives distinguish themselves above all others (because no one is talking about social issues but Mitch Daniels and Certain Fucking Doomabee) is national security. The GOP has lost on fiscal conservatism, and Steele is doing nothing to counter the Dem talking point that the economic crash was the result of Bush policies. I mean, Obama is actually talking like we haven't been in the longest economic recession since WWII and unemployment isn't on the rise... the GOP is quiet. Where is Michael Steele? I know, there is probably a website. Those of you who are donors get emails. But he spends more time explaining his stupid comments than he does promoting the GOP (and forget conservatism!)

Obama was never shy about taking the top prize. He has been groomed for it. That he was some kind of dark horse is patent BS. He found a loop hole and exploited it. Hillary got complacent, because she thought all her friends from her days in the White House would have her back. Obama knew this, too. He played her. Obama gamed the Dem primaries using the caucus system and his community organizing experience.

These aren't the issues we should be discussing. If he wants to talk about how small minority representation is in the GOP, he should be talking about what actually happened during the CRM, whether the GOP ever deviated from being the party of Lincoln, what we can do to attract minorities who believe in conservative principles and how those can improve any American lives. Not agreeing with some talking head that the RNC convention looked like a klan rally. Just an example. He's very bad at his job, and now he has dragged the war in Afghanistan into it.

Boeing and archrival European Aeronautic Defence and Space both formally entered the competition to build the next generation of aerial refueling tankers for the Air Force by Friday, with each submitting thousands of pages in highly technical proposals.
Really? By Friday? By Friday they are going to build the next generation of tankers?
I frequently hear such language in television news broadcasts, but it annoys the hell out of me to read it in an article which, I assume, was first reviewed by an editor.
Granted, I make plenty of mistakes on my own, but I don't have the benefit of an editor.
No wonder the English are so friggin annoyed with us.

Don't feed Apple, they are commies with a CLOSED system.
Andriod phones WILL win.
Why?
It's open, aka free, software. You don't have to get Google's permission to write or sell a program. Try doing that over at Job's concentration camp.
By the way, try navigating to anywhere on that great system on the I phone.

So, to eat seafood or not to eat seafood? That is the question.

Android is like everything Google touches. The engineering's admirable, but it's obvious why every designer they've ever tried to hire has quit in disgust. (Can anyone explain yet what Wave is good for?) And the App Store desparately needs some kind of adult supervision. You can still side-load apps that aren't in the store, so I see no problem with them clamping down on it more. I bought an EVO 4G because I loved the hardware. I still do, but the OS and software are definitely letting it down.

Nevertheless, based on my husband's iPhone (G3) experience -- and my attempts to use it -- I would not get an iPhone yet. Maybe if it winds up on Verizon. Maybe.
When we are lost without a nav system, my 4 year old enV running VZ Naz bails us out every time and more quickly than his iPhone Google Maps. And, it talks, so I don't need to watch it. Plus, the search function is superior, basically as good as the Garmin.

Since I'm not only behind the loop but completely out of it regarding such phones, I have a couple of questions.
What is the price you guys pay for your phones, and how much for contracts? And how long are you tied into a contract?
HH,
I think my Verizon enV contract is something like $80 a month. I never use the web browsing, but I do text and send photos via data transfer (or whatever). I think Mr. Y-not's AT&T iPhone G3 contract is about the same price. He is in a line of work where he uses the phone and email features a lot, plus the web stuff etc, and he has never come close to using his minutes.
I think the standard thing for contracts is one year and then you can get out of it... but I'm not sure. I've been on my Verizon contract for about 4 years; Mr. Y-not switched to AT&T a couple of years ago for work.
We were looking for a place to live in Utah last week and I have to say I felt a little hamstrung by not have a real smartphone. I had to rely on voice or text to communicate with Mr. Y-not while he was tied up and it was clunky.

I was just a kid, well, sort of, when Clinton was POTUS, and I didn't give a shit about politics. So let me put a few questions to some of you old timers.
Obama and the other Democrats are always blaming our present economy on Bush, right?
Well, I have a vague recollection that, at the end of the Clinton presidency, there was a lot of shit going on then, too, what with Enron and other shennanigans, right? My question is that didn't Bush inherit a lot of shit that occurred when Clinton was getting blow jobs from Monica, instead of meeting his responsibilities as POTUS? And if that is the case, hasn't Obama inherited shit that actually began under the Clinton Administration, not under the Bush Administration?
I suspect that is the case, because Democrats have a long history of never accepting responsibility for the consequences of their screw-ups, and of always blaming somebody else. I suspect, also, that, by shirking their responsibilities, the Clintion Administration is in large part to blame for this fucked up economy that we have today. But I could be wrong on this issue.
If I'm right, though, Republican candidates for offices should be going on the offensive and raising and hammering home that critical point in their campaigns, instead of playing defense to that liar, Obama, and instead of allowing that empty suit to get away with his disingenuos accusations about Republicans.

Y-not, I'm on Verizon with the Droid Eris and absolutely love it. The Incredible is the newer HTC upgrade on the Eris and I have several friends who are ex-IPhone users with the Incredible who rave about switching.
I like the IPhone, but the biggest factor for me was the network. I'm sitting in our weekend cabin right now on the Mogollon Rim in AZ, and an IPhone would be nothing but a paperweight right now because ATT doesn't cover. I've never dropped a call up her with Verizon.
You dock your phone into speakers with a phone dock? How old fashioned. I have a Motorola EQ7 JBL speaker, that I picked up on Ebay for $40 streaming my Pandora radio app off my Eris through bluetooth. It streams all my music that I used to carry on my Ipod, Pandora, or music from several other awsome Android apps. Shazam is the app that listens to music and then tells you what song it is...Android has that.
VZ Navigator? That crappy old Verizon navigation that you have to pay monthly for? Are you kidding me? Droid uses Google Navigation, which is free and amazing...voice GPS Navigation that is unmatched.
The Android app store, in my opinion, has everything useful that Apple has, plus some goodies Apple doesn't. Any popular app on IPhone quickly finds its way onto Android. But their open sourcing and links to Google mean rapid innovation and apps like Google Goggles, where you can point the phone at a book or piece of art or whatever and within seconds your phone is telling you what book it is and linking you to places to review it or buy it, or what that piece of art is named and who the artist is and all the info you'd ever want to know about that artist. My kids love Google Sky, which is like Google Earth flipped to the rest of the galaxy, so they can pinpoint constellations and planets and even satelites in the night sky up here at night.
IPhone's are great tech, but I'd encourage you to go to your Verizon store and check out the HTC Incredible or the Motorola Droid X that is about to come out. I think you'll be surprised. There is a reason Android is growing in market share at a pace that has Apple scared to death.

The Force is strong with this one.
Look up the Community Redevelopment Act, circa 1974. That one piece of shit bill is, IMHO, entirely responsible for the mortgage meltdown that conveniently occured just prior to the '08 presidential election. It also has Cliton's grimy little pawprints on it too.
And yeah, all presidents inherit their problems from their predecessors along with the good stuff. The Vapid One®, however, has raised Bush Derangement Syndrome to an art form, as did the MFM for eight years.
You tend to go with what works, as they used to say in the business sector, back when we had one, that is.

No problem Y-not. The FREE Google Navigation is really pretty great. We first tried it in May on a trip from our home in Phoenix to a vacation condo in Carlsbad. Plugged the phone in to our car radio and began streaming our music. Switched to the navigation app and said the address of the condo into Google Navigation and it started right up. Every time we had a turn or merge or whatever coming up, the music cut off and a woman's voice told us what to do. It worked flawlessly right to the parking lot. My Garmin now sits next to my Ipod in the drawer next to my bed.
Coverage in a rural area out here in the West could be your biggest factor in your decision. I don't know about Verizon's coverage in Utah, but it's by far the superior carrier in AZ for coverage in our rural areas. Because of this I've never had an IPhone, though I'm a tech nerd so have played with them an awful lot and know the capabilities and apps. I am also a bit of a business user, so the Android phones had to win me away from the Blackberry. I couldn't be happier that I made the switch.
Enjoy Utah, it's a beautiful place!

That area around Hobble Creek is beautiful. I golfed the Hobble Creek couse a few times about 10 years ago. It's a tough course being in the bottom of the canyon. The fairways are narrow and there is a lot of water. Needless to say, there are probably plenty of my golf balls still laying in the bottom of the creek or out in the thick trees.

Waiting until the election is too little, too late. This is why you need an RNC, NRSC, etc. You need organizations that will put out a controlled and unified message. Howard Dean deserves credit for doing that for the Democrats. They have an unfair advantage, because they control so much media. But the Republican party has resources that it is not using right now, and it is putting them at a disadvantage going into the midterms.
