Saturday Morning Stupid
— Dave in Texas

Maher last night. Now I'm with most of you idiots, I wouldn't spend five minutes watching Bill Maher unless SE Cupp was on the panel.

That's how I roll.

The other guests are Cory Booker, newly-elected Mayor of Newark and some goober who works for the Daily Beast.

The set up from Maher is that he doesn't understand why Obama would nominate a "cypher" to the Supreme Court. Great straw man, presumption being a) she isn't a partner idealogue like Obama and b) flat-out admission of same wouldn't kill her nomination (which it most assuredly would).

It's a fun discussion, except for Jon Cryer, he's a bit of a buzzkill. Maher eventually moves on to "Losing Our Religion" and asks Cupp to affirm that religious people are deluded, and her response is "I am not a militant atheist".

I find that refreshing. Should you accuse me of sucking up I will respond "shut up, you.. you."

Also a good retort from Booker on the "religion causes most wars" whine from Maher. "Bill, humans cause wars."

Ok that was the second best retort. The first best from Booker was "oh please." Third best was telling Maher "you're a fucking idiot."

I might have messed that last one up.

Anyway, good morning morons. If this isn't palatable there's always bacon and coffee. Also, a warning, it leaves you hanging when they start digging into the book, but I wasn't willing to jump through the HBO hoops to see if I could embed more of this. The set up was entertaining enough.

5 And speaking of wars, from all the stories it looks like Thailand is about to break down into full bore civil war. We will have to wait and see who Obama supports in order to determine that they are the bad commies and the other side are the good guys.

It looks like the so-call3ed red shirts though are the commies so that is who he will probably support.

22 dave in texas,

Communism is no more a state religion than neo-Gaia worship disguised as "enviromentalism".  Which is to say by way of being coy it is absolutely a state religion.  Both government philosophies require magic thinking and have severely enforced dogmatic thoughts.

If barack were half as passionate about defnding the body politic as he is destroying our economic engine the nation could sleep soundly knowing we had a true guard dog.

29 Dave in Texas,

Right sorry I was being a bit tortured.  Communism, Environmentalism, and Atheism have all turned rather "evangelical" in their bent in the last twenty years.  Well to be fair Communism is probably calming down a good deal without an active industrial power cranking out the AKs and other cut rate military kit for slave labor wages.  The Thais are managing to get their inner Marx on using outdated tech, and as opposed to 30 years ago the Chinese and Russians expect a profit margin for their troubles these days.

It saddens me deeply that the leftoids who are so pious in attacking their fellow Americans on their "lack of faith" on the matters near the moonbat heart can't be bothered to focus that rage at outside threats.

"er uh um I find your lack of faith disturbing Teabagger....."

48 OT, but I thought I would share. It's been rainy and gray all week, and I've felt pretty good. Not great, but okay. No sniffles, no sneezes, no congestion. This is unusual for me at this time of year. I began to think that it presaged a good weekend. I mean, if it's nasty out and I feel okay, then good weather should make me feel great. Alas. I wake up to a truly gorgeous Minnesota spring day, clear blue sky and warm sun, birds singing, feeling like the Jolly Green Giant shit on a baseball-bat and then beat me with the shit-covered bat. I've sneezed so many times this morning that I think I destroyed the part of my brain that used to like The Beverly Hillbillies. And still I must venture out to plant my front flower-garden today because...well, because I'm a boring single white guy, and this is what boring single white guys do on spring weekends, apparently. Leaving the garden to bide as a patch of naked dirt is not an option; the neighborhood would think ill of me. So I will take my ague-ridden body and swollen sinues out to do battle with spores, molds, pollen, and worm-shit, all in the name of having pretty, pretty flowers. There had better be some spiritual purpose to this, because I've got a hell of a headache. And I just sneezed all over my computer screen.

"I am not a militant atheist"

It's the ideological militance of Maher that proves he worships at the alter of a higher power [his intelligence (he assumes)].

If 80% of America believes in God, that would prove that Maher is technically insane, insanity being the belief in things ("God does not exist"... and he has no proof of his belief) that go against the grain of the masses. Kind of makes a sneering joke of his meme.

Dumb ass. Disbelief in God doesn't prove intelligence/sanity but is merely a lack of belief. Cupps' understanding of this puts Maher's reasoning inability on parade.

That to me is the very definition of 'liberal'...someone who turns on their own.

And still I must venture out to plant my front flower-garden today because...well, because I'm a boring single white guy, and this is what boring single white guys do on spring weekends, apparently.

There's always Left 4 Dead...blasting away at the zombie horde is good therapy...

Maher did say that Communism is a "state-religion", which I do agree with.

So he is religious after all.

Secondly, I'm sick of this crusades crap. The entire area was Roman and then by extension, Christian--if we are talking state religions, with a minority jews until Mohammad et al and his bands of warriors converted everybody by the sword. The Crusades sought to take it back after Europe built itself up after barely deflecting the Muslim tide. Why the idiots think that the crusades were some great Christian evil compared to the way that the muslims spread their religion is beyond any intelligent reading of history. (Yeah, I know, they aren't intelligent and they don't read history).

This BS didn't start until the PC crowd took over at the end of the 60s. There was no effort made to even look at real history, they just jumped on the all things of the West are bad and all things of the communists are good.  The Muslim crap got thrown in after the 70s just as a sideline because it was viewed as anti-West.

What is really funny is what would happen to 99% of these liberal idiots if the actually lived in one of those Muslim theocracies and spouted some of their crap in public. They wouldn't last a week before some turd cut their head off.

Spanish Inquisition

Country is over run by Muslims. Christians/europeans retake Spain. Said Spanish want to make sure all the muslims are outed. Seems reasonable to me. I wonder if the jews were sympathizing with the muslims? Sounds far fetched until you look at how the american jews are leaning today.

That conflict is not just religious - even aside from the fact that islam isn't even a religion, but a political ideology at its core.  The conflict is highly cultural/tribal, too, as arab nationalism was the driving factor for some time before islam was given a great boost by Carter's incompetence with Iran.  Before islam gained its great boost in the modern era, marxist arabs were being supported by the USSR - the biggest supporter of arab terrorism before the latest ascendance of jihadis.

The fact is that arabs will fight anyone and everyone they can (if they think they have a chance of winning) and they will base their fight on anything they think can help them.  Islam is little but the operational arms of arabs and persians, as the arabs happen to own sunni islam and the persians happen to own shia islam.  The source of all of their power lies in the gulf oil fields, and only in those fields, which is why I constantly remind people that all threats from the arab/persian/muslim world start and stop with their control of the gulf oil fields.

Yep.  The islamic connection is what spreads it worldwide, but the real forces behind this war are arabs and persians, funded by petro-dollars and the stranglehold on the world through the physical oil - which the other Hussein demonstrated so clearly for Americans when he intentionally dumped 40,000,000 barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every oil well in Kuwait on fire.

islam is a great danger because it can be set off by the slightest touch, but it's the arab/persian push and the fire of oil revenues that makes the threat a reality.  WIthout that, islam would be nothing more than a primitive ideology keeping its people in the stone age (where they belong, frankly) but with little effect on the world.

Of course, islam has now, separate and distinct from its arab/persian benefactors, happened onto the realization that the Western world is happy to provide muslims with all the tools they need to attack the free world from within (because we stupidly import these savages who hate us and everything we stand for).  That, of course, is just suicide on our part, as almost half of the West has been bent on cultural suicide for the better part of 100 years.

Yep.  The Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition was created to rein in religious vigillantism (as well as to fight Protestantism).  I remember reading that one year, because of bad harvests or plague or similar, something like 5000 'witches' were killed outside the judgments of the Church and the hierarchy was pretty appalled.

170 146, Scientists do not argue that our Universe came from nothing. Instead it is hypothesized that our Universe came from energy that already existed. Accepting that our Universe came from something else and that that something else was very different from our Universe does not involve magical thinking. It just means we are learning more and more as time goes by. Natural processes are required to be mundane, nor bound by preconceived notions as to what is fantastical and what is reasonable. Then did Monty come into the house and lie upon his pallet, dreaming of the sweet embrace of death which endeth his suffering.

195 My hay-fever is actually a little better now. Mornings are usually the worst for some reason -- maybe because my sinuses are all filled with crud when I wake up which gives me one of those vice-gripper sinus headaches. It's always better for me to get up and doing when I feel like this; staying in bed only makes it worse. OTC meds don't seem to help much. What I have isn't an actual allergy; it's just a hypersenstivity to mold and pollen. Pollen counts go up (especially tree-pollen), and I can count on a couple of days of dripping misery. It is a pretty day out, though.

The only way that you can be happy is if you tell yourself some lies and deceive yourself, and I'm not the first person to say this or the most articulate person on it. 205 As far as atheism goes: it's just as much a religious belief system as any other. It's no more grounded in fact (or lack thereof) than Christianity or Judaism or Islam. An atheist expresses a belief in the unprovable, and depnds upon faith rather than facts to maintain this belief. On a somewhat related note: you can only imagine the fights I get into with my Baptist brethren over my belief in New Synthesis evolution. 223 Belief in God is an intuitive belief, you either possess it or you do not. I have never begrudged an atheist his beliefs, because I too sought an intellectual answer to God in the face of tangible evidence that seemingly does not exist.

My ego and my sense of reasoning and logic simply would not permit an intuitive belief. Fortunately, thru a set of miracles and the last recorded statement of Christ I was set free. In the end, letting people believe what they want is respectful. I have nothing to gain from imposing my beliefs nor seeking like minded individuals to wag tails with. It is a beautiful place to be and far removed from the world wherein people like Bill Maher sneer at others. In fact, that's one of the reasons I can't stand the dude.

236 186 146,

Scientists do not argue that our Universe came from nothing. Instead it is hypothesized that our Universe came from energy that already existed.

Already existed?  Why did it exist?  What was it's source?  Where was it's beginning? What set it into motion?   I'm not saying that atheists believe in "magical thinking".  They have a legitimate point of view that I happen to completely disagree with.  My point is that it is just as easy to make that accusation of atheists as it is those who believe in a higher power.

245 Already existed? Why did it exist? What was it's source? Where was it's beginning? What set it into motion? You're thinking in terms of cause-and-effect, which is only an artifact of a universe where time moves in one direction. There's no reason other dimensions/planes/externalities would have to work that way. "Time" (or "distance"; same thing) only have meaning in our physical universe. They are not (necessarily) a universal property. A Christian believes that God is omniscient and omnipotent; but this is only a way of saying that he can exist in all times at once, and does not experience time as a continuum. He sees it all at once, like a snapshot -- Alpha and Omega, beginning and ending. Beings in other realities or universes might experience reality in a completely different way, and not be bound by the arrow of time as we are.

Posted by: dagny at May 15, 2010 12:02 PM (v+Vt0)

Actually I believe even this is wrong dagny.  At the time of the main Inquisition Spain was a Catholic country.  There were Jews there as well and the king didn't like that.  So he forced them to convert.  The pope negated their conversion and said they could remain jewish.  Some did choose to remain Catholic though.  And it was these converts that the Inquisition began with targetting.  Because people accused them of being phony Catholics and actually remaining as Jews.

275 Scientists do not argue that our Universe came from nothing. Posted by: Reggie1971 Yes, there are unanswered questions. It is just as easy to make the accusation, but not as easy to support it. Religions make use of the supernatural to explain and promote their narratives and creeds, science does not. Science uses only natural forces. The fact that science has not answered all questions and can not answer all questions is not proof that science and religion use the same thinking or tools.

277 Yes, there are unanswered questions. I heard Kip Thorne speak about the origins of the universe using the analogy of living inside a closed box -- we can only know what is inside the box. What's outside the box is forever beyond our ken. Even the concept of "outside" is a hypothetical on our part; we assume that there is an outside because we are "inside". But there is no way, even in principle, to tell for sure. We don't know; we cannot know. Science cannot tell us because our science comes from the world inside the box, not outside of it. Causality, the arrow of time, and the physics of energy and matter, are of our universe. These concepts only hold meaning in this universe. (And even now we might be fundamentally mistaken about some core concepts like gravity.) To ask "what came before our universe?" is a nonsense question for this reason -- the concept of "before" only has meaning if the arrow of time moves in one direction. And our concept of "time" didn't begin until the Big Bang. Don't think of the Big Bang creating a Universe by spewing matter into an existing void, by the way; this is incorrect. Space and time did not exist in any meaningful sense until the Big Bang created it. Think instead of a balloon inflating very suddenly, creating both time and space with it. Our universe is like the membrane of that ballon (ignore the air inside it for right now). In the same way two-dimensional space on the membrane of a balloon is affected by inflation, so were we affected in three-dimensional space by the Big Bang.

294 Any theory on what the move was that inflated it? The first cause so to speak? All kinds of theories. But we don't know for sure, and we'll probably never know for sure. Our science stops at the moment the Big Bang occurs. It is an artifact of the universe we live in. Anything outside of that event is unknowable even in principle (at least, in a quantitative sense). Some theorize that our universe was caused by a perturbation in "quantum foam", or that we were the endpoint of a newly-formed quantum string. There are physicists who theorize that we live inside a holographic universe -- that our universe is just a projection in the same way that your shadow is a projection of yourself. But as I said: it's impossible to know for sure unless we travel "outside"...which we cannot do.

Because people accused them of being phony Catholics and actually remaining as Jews.

Well, no shit. If someone forced me to convert, I would remain whatever I was beforehand.

The inquisition did not start out targeting jews but rather heretics. There had been huge amounts of heretical problems from first century christianity onward. In fact, had the church not put themselves in a vunerable position it would still not have been separated by heretics.

San Diego Asks Arizonans To Overlook Its Immigration Posturing

San DiegoÂ’s tourism industry leaders are in panic, and some politicians too, as some Arizonans cancel their summer trips due to the San Diego City Council and School Board condemning ArizonaÂ’s illegal immigrant enforcement law.

Tourism officials are advertising in Arizona an open letter urging Arizona residents to overlook local politics and come to San Diego just as they always have to escape Arizona's summer heat.

329 I can't help somehow liking C cups and still thinking C Cupps is not doing us any good at all. There's no necessary reason for conservatism to join hands with stupid and fraudulent in order to regain the White House and Congress. Americans want to be conservative and believe themselves to be conservative, which is normally kind of winning combination; but they also know that these days much of conservatism is singing kumbayah with stupid, and they dislike that so much it overcomes their natural inclinations. Making them look at how stupid and fraudulent liberals can be is worthy work, but not if the chosen way is to go stupider and more fraudulent. Calling Obie a hypocritical liberal accommodationist sell-out is accurate; calling him a commie and a nazi and a moron and a plant is stupid and fraudulent. Worse: it doesn't work. And worst of all, it backfires. One of the reasons I really like Ace is because of his open-eyed realism about the news from the fronts, eg: Afghan insurgency rebel chieftan smoked by multilateral culturally-sensitive cooperative counterinsurgency and drone-delivered war head, but mostly drone-delivered war head. C Cupps, on the other hand, is all about combining some unarguably good stuff, tits and ass, with a fraudulent bullshit premise and an idiotic set of conceits. I was going to call it moronic, but it doesn't rise to that level and I'm not looking to hurt any feelings.
