Saturday Morning Thread: Three Kings
— Monty

Riley B. (B.B.), Freddie, and Albert.

Here is why I'm singing the blues, children.

Dems on health care: You f'd up. You trusted us. So please trust us again.

The "robo-signing" mess shows every sign of going from bad to worse.

The Norks are still as crazy as shithouse rats.

Detroit, the punch-line to every "urban decay" joke since the 1970's, has $500 million to spend. So, what to do with it? Tear down some of the decaying, abandoned homes? Spruce up the neighborhoods that still have, you know, people living in them? Solve the crime problem (Detroit took the murder crown back from Baltimore)? The city government took a look at the array of problems facing the city and declared: "Gentlemen, what we need to solve all our problems is...light rail!" It's enough to make stones weep.

And finally, we have lost a true cultural icon recently. Manimal has crossed the Great Divide.

Damn right I got the blues.

14 I live in Metro-Detroit and if the light rail provided non stop service to the center of Detroit where most of the police are it might work but no one from the suburbs is going to ride it if it makes stop all the way into the city unless it has 24hour armed  police on it. Most people not living in the city dislike traveling past 8mile during the day because of how unsafe and dangerous it is almost no one sane would do it past dark.

Detroit had large section that are just full of crack houses, drugs, and criminals it's insanely unsafe and it's negative influence is spreading north as the local regional economy slows even more. If Deroit wasn't burdened with corrupt leadership that all want pie int he sky dreams of the past some stuff might get done but sadly most of the citizens of Detroit are so badly educated you could sell them prancing unicorns and flying pigs and they would believe you.

The best Detroit could do is seize and plow under dozens of entire city blocks and replace it with safer open land. Cities on the east cost of no problem using eminent domain to take land to build condos and hotels why can't Detroit do it to make everyone a little bit safer and save money. If there no houses there no need to maintain the roads or provide public services after all.

15 Good Morning Monty;

Yeah, these liars are running away from their records and their Party as fast as they can. Bwarny Fwank spent the entire debate yesterday lying (constantly) about his record on F&F and CRA. We have gone past the "big lie". Hell, even Stalin would not have dreamed of lies as outrageous as our modern commies. Of course, his elections only had one name on the ballot. I suspect our modern commies would love that as well.

22 As for Detroit, as long as we the taxpayers of the country are funneling money there it will NEVER get any better. The "black liberation" politicians who run the urban areas now are blatant about their corruption and thievery because they know no white politician will ever call for their prosecution. They have been so successful playing the "race" card they no longer even care.

The way to fix Detroit is to cut ALL State and Federal funding for everything in the city and allow it to completely collapse. After that you can start over in a three step process.

1. The Feds declare it a territory and remove ALL State jurisdiction.

2. Bulldose EVERYTHING to the ground and bury it.

3. Build an Army fort there completely surrounded by high walls. Name it Fort Detroit.

4. Establish patrols in the area to protect entrepreneurs who are willing to risk their lives to grow crops or trap animals for fur.

Sound familiar?

26 DC's metro was actually a thing of beauty and safty. Then they opened the "purple line". What was so cool about that was that the purple line gave the bad guys a way to get to all the other parts of the city easily! So where you used to have an upscale mall in Va near the Pentagon, now you have an upscale mall in Va near the Pentagon with an open passage to the bowels of Anacostia! Makes the whole area have that extra je ne sais quoi for sport.

27 Despite the fact that she tried to push him top blame the evil banks, he laid it on the government and the fed. I dunno, Vic. There was a lot of fuckery going on at the banks. A lot. This wasn't just a little "the proper paperwork wasn't filed" kind of thing. This is a situation where in many cases, legal transfer of title was not accomplished because either a notary wasn't present, or the principals signed the note without having the details filled in (like signing a blank check). Fannie and Feddie are of course at the center of things -- how could they not be, owning as they do such a large portion of the mortgages? But the main villains here seem to be the servicers and securitization firms. Here's the biggest problem. Let's say you own a chunk of some RMBS (Residential Mortgage Backed Security). You invested a certain amount in the shares, and get a certain return, based on the risk of the security. Right? But all of a sudden, this RMBS may not be attached to any actual collateral, because the underlying mortgage never actually legally changed hands! Therefore, your RMBS is actually just unsecured debt -- but you're not getting compensated for the risk you (unknowingly) took on. Also, the servicing companies are being paid cash they are not legally entitled to (since they don't legally own the mortgage, see?). It goes on and on like that. Banks are going to sue everybody, the servicing companies are going to sue everybody, the securitizers (investment banks) are going to sue everybody, and investors and home-owners are going to sue everybody. And in the meantime all that foreclosed property is just going to sit there, stinking up the balance-sheets of the banks. This is a lot worse than many people think it is. It could be another Lehman-style trigger for catastrophe. Systemic risk and counterparty risk -- our financial system is rotten with it.

30 Therefore, your RMBS is actually just unsecured debt -- but you're not getting compensated for the risk you (unknowingly) took on. Actually, it's worse than that because legally, the securitizers never had the authority to securitize and sell you that RMBS in the first place (since the entity "owning" the mortgages didn't actually, you know, own them). The only short-term "fix" for this hairball would be for the government to step in and by fiat change the terms of all those contracts -- declare some null and void, and others valid. This would trample all over contract law (even more than they've already done), but the only alternative is to let the various cases wend their slow and tortuous way through the court system.

31 The Detroit rail proposal has been coupled to a local idea for a transit center in the Northern suburbs - for 50 million dollars - that will serve bus and rail.

This has been pushed by Gary Peters, a first-term Dem congressman sucked in with the '08 wave and supporter of all things Obama.  This guy needs to go.

Almost nobody uses bus or rail to go to work in Detroit because there are many  fewer jobs left in Detroit.

Teenagers and others however, are apparently in the habit of using the bus to go to Detroit to buy drugs, so if they get caught they won't lose their car.  Others will find it convenient to get to the suburbs for muggings, robberies, etc.

We call it the "Criminal Express."

Oh I don't disagree. This was an author saying the government was largely to blame. Before I would make a final judgment it would be nice to know why the banks had all these problems transferring mortgages.

It may be that the whole CRA/F&F mess made it inevitable. And that is the key to the whole thing. What would be damn nice would be to have a panel of experts, not involved with the government in any fashion, who have been trained in Root Cause Analysis do an investigation.

Give them subpoena power and the ability to administer oaths and affirmation and have THEM conduct an investigation of the whole mess.

Of course, that will never happen because people like Piss Dodd and Bwarney Fwank would own 99.9% of the mess.

Anyway, off for the morning walk. Back later

34 "1. The Feds declare it a territory and remove ALL State jurisdiction."

The feds couldn't do that unilaterally.  However, Michigan could revoke the city's municipal charter and then (probably) retrocede the area back to the feds, since the whole state used to be federal territory.  This requires a GOP Michigan governor and state legislature, but I assume we're on track to that in November.

It's sort of like, in reverse, how the "problem" of DC statehood could be addressed by most of the District being retroceded to Maryland, though Maryland doesn't want it.  Remember that Alexandria was part of DC for several decades before it went back to Virginia.

You don't know how frustrating it is living in Houston, knowing his view on illegals when he was Mayor, listening to him now claiming his support for "federal immigration laws."  The instant he won the primary, he immediately turned into a conservative demonrat.  Gald that Perry has finally ben hitting him on his spending habits as Mayor.

44 "And then the lawyers take over and soon thereafter retire to their private tropical island paradises."

It's been pointed out elsewhere that the bankruptcy bar is a priesthood-within-a-priesthood of the legal profession.  It's a complete alien language and universe even to most attorneys.  And they're ones who really take over and retire to the tropical island paradises here: reason being, once of the parties involved petitions for bankruptcy to stay and "escape" from what they think is bad in state court, that party can't even pay its own legal bills without approval of its secured creditors and/or the bankruptcy court.  Forget the idea that the bankruptcy petitioner has anything like a normal attorney-client relationship where it's even nominally in control.

I think it was more of a perfect storm. Alan Greenspan provided some help in the form of easy money. That money needed a new place to go after the dot com bubble burst. The RMBSs won the competition for those dollars.

Posted by: NM Hick at October 16, 2010 06:14 AM (IzuWw)

47 At the bottom of the mortgage mess, there is one fact: there are a helluva lot of people out there who can't afford the houses they live in. Some are underwater because they have fallen victim to the Osama Obama Economic Miracle.

But others simply bit off more than they could chew. They did it the same way they'd lay down money at a roulette wheel: they were betting that an unlikely miracle would carry them through.

In a sense, it doesn't matter who they should be paying (but aren't). The debt exists, and in many cases all the fuss about gubmint bailouts and straightening out the paper trail ends up rewarding bad behavior. Find out who these people owe, and they still are in debt.

So we have bad practices, greed and stupidity on both sides of this table. Either way, they people who who tried to game the system and can't perform need to take their lumps.

I guess my point (it's too early to do anything difficult, like "thinking") is that I see the regime and the MFM trying to deflect attention from the irresponsibility of people who bought houses knowing they couldn't afford them without a winning lotto ticket or some kind of unearned outside intervention on their behalf.

It's too easy to blame eeeeevil Big Business (the banks) in tot, and forget the roles played by the house-buyers themselves and the crooked bestids in Congress who allowed and encouraged stupid behavior.

All sides in this mess had their hands in the cookie jar. As far as I'm concerned, they all need to eat shit.

Posted by: Democrat Party at October 16, 2010 06:43 AM (IzuWw)

53 The problem with robo-signing isn't the homebuyers. It's the transfer of title from the originator to the servicer, and then to the packager/securitizer. The homeowner may indeed be in default and be legally liable to be foreclosed upon; that's not the issue. The question is: who is legally authorized to foreclose? Who owns the title? In many cases, it's not a simple question -- and if you're a bank and you try to foreclose on a home you don't legally own, that's a big legal problem right there. It's also a huge problem if you've bought a foreclosed property, or if you're the title insurance company. Believe me, this is a huge hairball. It's not just a question of some homebuyer not reading the fine print.

62 I don't think anyone has said "Hey Detroit, you have five hundred million to spend.... whaddya want???" and the people jumped up and said "Light rail!" In fact, it is national and local liberals who push this crap. When Detroit could use help in other areas they get these pet projects. Metro Detroit has had a net decrease in traffic. Commutes are easier now than they have been because less people work. I saw someone locally suggest that Ann Arbor to Detroit light rail would be exciting for our area. There is already AA to Detroit Amtrak for like $16 and NOBODY rides it. But hey, once the city is turned into micro-farms and it has a street car line, all of the economic activity generated by the big three will be offset or something.

70 Want decent cities?

Mix:

Low taxes. No Liberals. Stir until smooth.

Posted by: eman at October 16, 2010 11:46 AM (Lwdmy)

My theory of city "shittyfication" shows that you can't have that. Once a city grows to a population larger than 30K the liberals begin to take over.  Once that happens the taxes go up for the businesses, home owners, and working people. They then move out leaving the leaches and the liberals who feed off of them. That accelerates the slide.

IOW you can not have a "decent" city over 30K.

71 How does this all end? Will the owner end up being the U.S.A. by fiat? Will USA rent and/or evict current occupants? Will MBAs be dissolved and outlawed? I hope everybody had mortgage documentation insurance, underwritten by the Tooth Fairy

A South park reference to a Simpsons reference?

Man, that's what I was going to post.  Guess I'll just be going for ice-cream or something.  Anyone need a juice-box; clearly I'm not pulling my weight around here.

73 The folks who run the city want a better way to get to sporting events?

74 What thread are people posting on if not the sports one?  I posted a couple of things in Laura's thread, which I don't dare put in the sports thread.  I wonder if monty can throw up a headlines thread or soemthing for this kind of stuff or if someone can point me to the thread everyone is posting to.  TIA

Re:  Robosigning mess

Sounds a lot like when the OJ Simpson defense team "successfully" put the LAPD on trial instead of OJ being convicted for an obvious double murder...Default laws are specific state to state...Essentially, when you stop paying your mortgage the bank moves to take your collateral which was pledged as security for the loan...These lawyers intend to focus on the "if the glove dont fit you must acquit scenario."  The rest of us will pay the costs for deadbeat homeowners and their high priced lawyers...

77 RE: Dems on health care: You f'd up. You trusted us. So please trust us again.

My daughter is 20 and had never seen Animal House. We rented it from Netflix and saw it Thursday. As soon as I heard that line I thought of the Dems, not just on health care, but the Stimulus Package and so many other things.
Well,we didn't vote for the Bamer, but a lot of folks gotta be feelin' like Flounder about now.

78 Well hey, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified six-car monorail.

Some of the counterparites involved in these transactions no longer exist. They went tits up in the 2008 meltdown. They're gone. The paperwork is gone. The computer records are gone.

I was with you until here. There just isn't any such thing as non-existent records on Wall Street. It could never happen without somebody going to jail. Doesn't matter if the underwriter burned to the ground.
