Saturday NFL playoff thread [someone]
— Open Blog

Because all the "official" bloggers are getting soused...

Rogers-Cromartie's injury may mean Arizona is toast. But then again, they weren't actually planning on playing defense, were they?

Link some cheerleader pix in the comments and I'll post 'em below. Yeah, the Cardinals (and their cheerleaders) aren't looking too happy right now.

You're probably better off going with the Salvation Army (who has been in the country since 1950) or Doctors Without Borders.  They both have a good help vs. administration ratio.  Avoid Wyclef Jean's scam at all costs.

67 When Kurt Warner was QB of the Rams, and the Saints and the Rams were both in the NFC West, the Saints made Warner cry every time we faced him. He can't STAND the Saints, it's a psychological thing. Personally, I'm really enjoying watching my Saints make Warner cry right now. Saints, THREE touchdowns in the first THIRTEEN MINUTES, bitches!!! I dunno what happened there last night. By the time I read it this morning all the comments were redacted.

I don't know Joan and I haven't been here long enough to remember anything she's posted. But I think her views were pretty much consistent with what other people were saying. Not sure what set him off. Maybe a bad batch of shrooms?

But I love Blazer. Stubborn and unapologetic to the core--yep--and that's why I like him. (okay so again, there may have been personal attacks which I would never condone, but like I said, a lot was redacted by the time I read it).

I'd want him in my corner any day of the week and twice on Sunday and I'd be very sad if his "ban" were permanent.

We all do strange things when we're provoked or feeling defensive.

One time, on one of those purity threads, it got very testy and I actually made some horrific remark to someone (who doesn't comment here anymore) about his lack of prowess with the ladies. Not just that, but he had revealed on the ONT how long it had been since he'd been laid--and I brought that up. I  instantly stepped back in horror and thought oh my god what did I just type?? Yet, when he made a snarky comment back, as he should have, I defended it saying that he brought it up so it was fair game. I knew I was being an ass but wouldn't let it go.

We all have our moments. Some are more disgraceful (mine) than others.

Live and learn.

Posted by: Peaches at January 16, 2010 02:45 PM (9Wv2j)

116 We'll work on it for you.

Lacey, I used to work for Ray Nagin when he owned the New Orleans Brass in the ECHL. The shitty thing about Nagin is that he started off as a conservative (before he ran for mayor), enough to the point where attack ads against him were titled "Ray Reagan" ( I know, I know) and so forth.

He departed reality from there. Nonetheless, the bottom line remains that greater New Orleans is a conservative area- Orleans Parish (New Orleans proper) is the one island of blue until you get to downtown Baton Rouge- not unlike just about every other major city in the US.

In any event, check it out if you ever get the chance. There's a new mayoral election getting ready to happen, and you may be surprised about who wins. Check out Rob Couhig among others.

Oh yeah- anyone notice Reggie Bush having a pretty good game?

119 Thank goodness for alkeyhaul, only thing making this game bearable. Anyone know the story of why Warner chose 13 for his number? Seems like i remember hearing it a long time ago, but can't remember it.

Posted by: koopy at January 16, 2010 02:50 PM (XllG0)

120 tmi3rd, you're so right... I lived in New Orleans when Nagin ran for his very first term, and he was a refreshing difference from the Morial clan that had run New Orleans for decades. Nagin was a businessman who had common sense and we believed in him when he said he'd run the city like a business. What a shame the corrupt nature of New Orleans politics changed him.

Posted by: JenBee at January 16, 2010 02:50 PM (lcoYs)

121 I expected the Cards to be more competitive. 45-14 in the 3rd and it's over.

Posted by: JEA at January 16, 2010 02:51 PM (KaT6k)

122 Tmi I think NOLA has a majority Republican City Council. I'm expecting good things from the Mayor's election, too.

Posted by: koopy at January 16, 2010 02:52 PM (XllG0)

124
45-14 but you can't say it's over just yet.  Warner is a tough ol' coot and he can still throw a pretty nice pass where it needs to be.  Of course they would actually have to stop the Saints once or twice, but still.

Posted by: Dang Straights at January 16, 2010 02:53 PM (Xj88r)

125 Jen, if you'll recall, he arrested his own brother in the first week of his administration for fraudulent brake tags... but yeah, he turned into a Louisiana politician somewhere along the way. The thing that enrages me is that BellSouth was going to retrofit the entire New Orleans area with fiberoptic lines as a test bed for what is now AT&T U-verse and Ray stopped it... because Cox Communications had paid for his previous mayoral runs and wanted their monopoly on non-satellite TV.

Posted by: tmi3rd at January 16, 2010 02:54 PM (ZNj7+)

126

I understand what you're saying, but in life, you prioritize. There are probably 20 other cities I've never seen that I wish to and NO doesn't even come close on that list. It was just never my preference and Nagin just sort of sealed the deal.

It's no reflection on the people of course. I had the pleasure of having a very long conversation once with Mike Foster. Interesting cat, that one.

Hell, I'm in the midwest and I'm not sure I ever want to leave. Think I have an easy time selling people on Indianapolis or Cincinnati? They'd rather have dental work.

Posted by: laceyunderalls at January 16, 2010 02:55 PM (D7ZkY)

127 Oh yeah- and just for the record, once he stopped tormenting the Saints, I came to adore Kurt Warner. Great quarterback, great man... and what can I say, he's one of us on the right. If he retires after this game, the league will be weaker for it.

Posted by: tmi3rd at January 16, 2010 02:55 PM (ZNj7+)

128 Understood, Lacey... as before, if you're ever so inclined, we'll be waiting for you with a big plate of red beans and rice over at Camellia Grill and then drag you down to Pat O'Brien's to get you a hurricane or two... then carry you home.

Posted by: Dang Straights at January 16, 2010 02:58 PM (Xj88r)

130 Yeah tmi, I can certainly appreciate where you're coming from... I've (secretly) admired Warner for his personal beliefs and the way he lives his life. He is a good man. But I've never been able to cheer for him in the NFL because of our raucous history with him when he was QB of the Rams. And omg, I had FORGOTTEN about that ugly bullshit w/ Bell South and Cox. Ugh. Yes, Nagin has GOT TO GO. I almost wish I were still living in New Orleans just so I could vote against him.

Posted by: JenBee at January 16, 2010 02:58 PM (lcoYs)

131 I'd like to poke those refs in the eye or rough them up a bit.  Seems like they got some Obamacare bribe money from Mary Landrieu!  I agree with tmi3rd ... Kurt Warner is a class act - both on and off the field!

Posted by: incognito at January 16, 2010 02:59 PM (maxwK)

Ahh, I think you underestimate my tolerance

And speaking of, I didn't make it to the store yet. I got sucked into the 'in defense of Blazer' discussion.

Well my game is coming on and we have rituals (which I can only do in abstentia from my friends in Indy *sniff sniff...I miss you guys tonight!*.

Quarter one: Bloody Marys (yes I realize it's at night--but sometimes these games start at one and it's a nice brunch drink)

Quarter two: I switch to beer. Sometimes Sam Adams Cherry Wheat or Newcaste. And somestimes just a good Miller Lite on tap is soooo good. It depends.

Quarters three and four: This is where it gets dicey and depends on the game. If it's looking bad (like a lot of this season did for Colts fans despite the record), I'll switch to a 7&7. Otherwise I stick to a beer.*

*(and despite sounding like a complete lush many times I don't drink, esp when I have to drive).

136 Think I have an easy time selling people on Indianapolis or Cincinnati? They'd rather have dental work.

Back when the Pacers and Lakers were in the championship (whatever year that was) Reggie Miller gave an interview where he said flat out that the weather in LA was nicer, but life in the Midwest was just plain better.

Although you couldn't pay me any money to live in Chicagoland.

137 Jen-

I went to Newman with the Manning kids, then switched to Country Day after 6th grade. Then I got sick of the private school scene and went to UNO for my undergrad.

My father is a doctor over at West Jeff, and the house is in Metairie (brah). My wife and I now live in Fort Worth.

Turtle, as to your Mardi Gras Moron Meetup, my wife and I are going to try to get down for Mardi Gras. Let's definitely revisit that idea.

Jesus, the Saints look good!

Wow tmi, a true New Orleanian! I went to Ursuline Academy and lived on the West Bank my whole life. I love that your dad is a doctor at West Jeff (I was born there!) I sure wish I could get to New Orleans for the 'Mardi Gras Moron Meetup' but I can't afford it this year. Saints look GREAT and a big fuck you to the haters who never did BELIEVE!!

I'm sure it will be better in the second half after the guy have a chance to brush their teeth.

234 Who's doing the color commentary on Westwood one radio? He's horrible, and not just because he's riding ray Lewis's Jock. He's just terrible.

235 Is it Dan Reeves, whatever? Does he sound like an emphysema patient?

236 Is Sharpe wearing velvet?

Posted by: HeatherRadish at January 16, 2010 05:47 PM (OkT2m)

237 No it's fed not Reeves. Younger I think. Sounds like a recent ex-player not coach.

Posted by: whatever at January 16, 2010 05:51 PM (q19bl)

238 Heh, Sharpe is stylin'. Best part of the game so far? When the helmet to helmet was called in the endzone and the pass was dropped, Dan Deirdorf got all excited and said there was lots to talk about here........and then didn't say a word for another minute.

Girlie comments...

Manning needs a nose job.  Some guys look decent with a broken nose and he's not one of them.

Flacco looks like he's wearing eyeliner.

I kinda dig the black pants without the knee-hi's that the Ravens wear.

There is nothing wrong with Manning's nose.

I'm sure it's functional.  It's just ugly.

247 I'm sure that keeps him up nights, knowing some hideous scrunt on the Internets doesn't like it.

Yes and I'm sure he's thinking the same thing when he's looking at any one of the diamond encrusted mirrors in one of his 18 bathrooms at his compound.

In other other words, Petyon Manning is doing just fine.

251 Umm....I think Peyton has a lovely nose.  Great nose.  Bet he even breathes better than most of us.

No need, I got it covered.

Ugly nose or not, this has certainly been a boring game.

260 The Packers/Cardinals has been the only competitive game so far post season. Got a good feeling about tomorrows games though, seems like a couple of good matchups.

Posted by: koopy at January 16, 2010 06:36 PM (XllG0)

261 Might as well make some predictions -

Cowboys/Vikings - 27-24 Cowboys

Jets/Chargers - 35-31 Chargers

I predict a couple of good ones tomorrow

I agree, that game was a blast to watch.  I knew the Cards wouldn't make it past today, though; they have no defense.  Being a Steelers fan, I now just want to see some good plays for the next few weeks, and tonight has been "meh."

Posted by: barbelle at January 16, 2010 06:42 PM (qF8q3)

263 Well, I'm going 1-1 today.  The Ravens can't buy a break.

265 Yeah, it was kinda funny that Dierdorf was using the expression "It's his turn in the barrel" like it was a good thing!

Posted by: logprof at January 16, 2010 06:54 PM (gJL6J)

266 A little late to the thread, and 'scuse me if this has been discussed to death already, but I cannot believe that play by Pierre Garcon running all of the way back up field and knocking that ball out!!!

Man, I love the Colts, but the Ravens just couldn't catch a break in this game.
