Saturday Open Thread
— Gabriel Malor

Yes, an empty, open thread. Bring it on.

The British are freakin' weird, but I seem to be listening to a lot of their stuff lately.

Guess how old she was when she filmed that. No peeking.

nickless, thanks for the uncomfortable college radio flashback reminding me of my co-host who had an unnatural fixation with the Aquabats and insisted that we play one song by them every show.

Speaking of which, the show was called "The Cheese Hour", and it was a two hour morning-show-at-night.  Our theme song was "Seas of Cheese" by Primus.

54 40 #24  What do you consider a "happy song"?

Good question. Um, it doesn't have to be completely lighthearted, but not the wrist-slitting stuff they play now. Most of those pop songs are about loneliness, or being marrying someone so you can be alone together, or how you missed your last chance at happiness. Nothing good happens in any of the songs, b/c it's all about people falling apart. It's depressing enough in RL...

So, I'd take 1-2 good things happening per song, perhaps a happy ending once-in-a-while. Like this, where there is a happy result.

104 68 Miss'80sBaby -- one obvious reason that the humor of those shows is more universal (and classier in general) is that back then, the people running the networks and their sponsors were all bright enough to know better than to poison half the potential audience for their shows by saturating them with partisan politics. Political gags certainly made their way on the air from time to time, but were always made to be non-partisan and good-natured.

Throughout the radio era and well into the first couple of decades of the television age, there was a general attitude and understanding among broadcasters that, in a sense, they were entering the homes of millions of people as guests and thus ought to accord their hosts the respect that came with being a guest. The result was gentler, classier, and often funnier entertainment than we have now. Today, the attitude bred by a we-wanna-do-what-we-wanna-do-when-we-wanna-do-it society is basically, "we're coming into your home; maybe we'll take a dump on your carpet if we feel like it, and if you don't like it then tough shit."

You guys are helping me finance my retirement by reducing the impact of my entertainment budget hooker habit.

Can you feel the love?

106 "I'm a little bit taken aback that now that 72-hour rule has been completely cast aside, since nobody in the House has seen what's in the reconciliation bill," said Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Virginia.

None dare speak its name.  And that name is tyranny.  Overt acts taken to deceive the public and the public's representatives, and to freeze them out of the legislative process, are nothing short of oppression.  The question is no longer whether... certain acts... are justifiable, it's simply a matter of deciding at what point the become a practical necessity.

Gotta run with it, dude.  I'm in.

I don't have the first clue about how to run a trading site. You set it up and I'll take care of the prognosticating.

108 104 68 Come to think of it, I've heard very few political jokes on all those shows, & the ones I've heard have always been quite lighthearted. For instance, Jack tells a joke about wearing a starched collar & says, "I don't know how Hover stood it all those years". So, he doesn't get into the nitty-gritty about the Depression, just makes fun of Hoover by way of caricature.

Me either.  Mom mother's in venture capital.  Big bucks.  Maybe we have something.

I should stop talking about it, now, 'cause that's all it is.  Talk.

So that's what "love" feels like...

It can do both things.  I just left out my hooker habit because I'm a classy, sophisticated guy and I didn't want to ruin that glowing, golden-boy imagine I know all you moronettes have in your mind whenever you see the screen name "Reactionary."

I like it.

And, she kind of has a young Kelly Preston thing going on.

112 108 -- Exactly, and at that time Hoover would have been the easiest target in the world for a mean-spirited barb, with minimum risk of pissing off a huge swath of the audience. Jon Stewart certainly wouldn't have restrained himself. But Jack was class all the way.

115 Maybe it died on TV in the 90s with reality TV.

117 Yeah, the ball was already rolling downhill fast by that time, but reality TV did seem to hurl us into an altogether different dimension of anything-goes assholery. I grew up in the '80s and '90s and don't remember the culture being anywhere near this ugly.

118 116 -- Nah; most of Philadelphia is still more-or-less standing so it couldn't be Detroit East.

(If terrorists nuked Detroit, how long would it be before someone noticed?)

120 I'm in for the evening. Stupid cousins doesn't want to come out and go to dinner. Albeit the weather does suck here, in Chicago. It's not so much the rain - which I can totally deal with - it's the nasty ass wind accompanying it. So, i just finished leftovers from lunch, had an awesome iced tea, am about to settle in with some milk chocolate covered orange peels. And yes, I know...I have no life.

All our kids are eclectic. They have had a lot exposure to music through us before they went to school.

126 She's an awfully pretty girl!
Overall, my impression is that the song is a hygienic version of Amy Winehouse, an Amy you can take home to meet your mum, a smiling blond Amy.
I think I prefer Amy.

Guess how old she was when she filmed that. No peeking.

I peeked, went to Wikipedia to look it up, got distracted by the featured article of the day, read all about Albert Kesselring. So I still don't know.

The song's pretty good, though. Oh, wait: I'm still playing Jane Wiedlin.

(I'm doing this wrong, aren't I?)
