I posted a comment here a few days ago. It was the most unbelievable thing. Folks were sitting in traffic, like any other day, and rain was falling from the sky.
In less than 3 hours the river rose 40 (yes, 40!) feet. They were just sitting there, doing their normal commute, and friggin wall of water comes across them.
And, as for the folks in New Orleans who claimed that poor, black folk were left to die...well, Music City has its share of poor black folk and, yet, no looting...no blaming the government...no poor-mouthing...no using of gift cards to purchase Louis Vuittton handags (remember that?).
God Bless them all and all the very best in their recovery.

I hope CMT does a huge telethon for the benefit of the Tennessee (and surrounding area) flood victims, and that at every break to give out the phone number, they remind their viewers that the telethon is necessary because the Obama Administration has essentially ignored the suffering of the people in Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi.

An area just can't take 14" of rain in 2 days; it's what they've called a 1000-year flood. And we're lucky the TVA and the Corps of Engineers managed the dams upstream on the Cumberland River, or it would've been much worse.

I still can't forget the hysteria that Geraldo tried to scare up in New Orleans, adding to the fear and suffering with talk of the thousands of snakes and alligators swmming the flooded streets. (not so)
I wanted to choke the piss out of him then and, especially six months later when I did my driving tour through the entire coast from the panhandle of Florida all the way to and beyond New Orleans. It was truly awe-inspiring to see what devastation was unleashed. It was so much worse that what we saw on television yet those assholes, Shep and Geraldo, handled themselves in such a way as to make most people watching them instantly discount by half any claim they made.
Now, with Nashville swimming and nearly two dozen people killed, they could give a shit less.

Kratos,
That is the urban myth that has sprouted from today's action. A couple of stocks were halted on the floor, P&G being one of them, but the electronic market kept going. Thus, when it reopened trading some thousands of shares were still trying to be sold. By that time the bid had plummeted. When the rest of the market saw this, it freaked. So, it was a glitch, just not a transcription glitc.

I am from Nashville originally. I was a cop there for a stint and now reside in DA ATL YO!
My parents along with most of the members of my extended family are there. I attended high school just across the highway from the Orpyland Hotel & the Grand Ol Opry house. They opened my old high school and moved some of the hotel's guests there with help from the Red Cross. I've been in the Orpyland Hotel more times than I can count, and it had 10ft of water in the bottom floor. If you've never been, the glass ceiling conservatories are amazingly beautiful, and now they're ruined.
I've seen the Cumberland flood before, but never anything even close to this level before. To give you reference, the normal river level at downtown 1st Ave and Broadway & Riverfront Park is roughly 45ft below street level. on 1st Ave.
My parents live in the same house I grew up in on the side of a small hill. At the bottom of the hill across a small field is the junction of 2 small creeks, and the houses along those creeks have never been flooded as long as the neighborhood has existed..until this weekend. Most of the houses of my childhood friends were flooded out.
My old patrol areas in north and west Nashville were only passable by boat. There is a new high rise condo building in downtown that has a 3 story underground parking garage and it's completely flooded to just below the ceiling of the 3rd story. The arena where the Predators play, the Ryman, and other building got flooded because of back-up storm drains.
If you've seen the video of I-24 @ Bell Rd where the small building comes floating down the river from Lighthouse Christian School? Yeah that is the headwater area of Mill Creek and where that occured Mill Creek is relatively narrow and shallow. I know because I've fished it plenty when I was a teenager. For there to be enough water to float a portable classroom building down that creek is unbelievable. And what you don't see is the houses and school on the other side of I-24 that got washed away.
The flooding in downtown Nashville is unreal. It's compounded by the fact that 3 large recreational TVA Hydroelectric dams all empty into the Cumberland River. Dale Hollow Lake, Center Hill Lake, and Percy Priest Lake (the PPL dam is a mile from where I grew up) all empty into the Cumberland, and all east of downtown Nashville.
Basically every stream/creek/river from south of Franklin TN all the way around to Murfeesboro, up to Center Hill and Dale Hollow Lakes, and up into south-central Kentucky at some point empties into the Cumberland River, most east of Nashville.
It's a sheer wonder that there isn't more flooding in downtown. Old Hickory Dam and Percy Priest Dam both did an amazing job coordinating the timing of their open spillways or it would have been MUCH worse.
My cousin resides in West Meade, and that entire area was basically a lake. They live close to the Harpeth River but above known flood plain until this weekend. She actually uploaded a video to WSMV TV from her iPhone and they played it on the air most of Sunday morning. They have a finished basement and an in-ground pool. When the river level dropped enough for them pump water out, they had about 4 inches of mud on the floor. They pumped out the pool and it has 2 feet of mud in it.
I know that Gov. Bredesen has asked for the feds to declare a state of emergency in TN, and rightly so. It just angers the living piss outta me that arrogant shit Obama has been silent on the situation. Hell, I survived the massinve flooding here in ATL last September and Douchebag Biden even made a stop here to survey the damage. I can tell you that Nashville has been hit harder by this than ATL was in Sept.
Thus far the vast majority of the flooded areas in Nashville and middle TN are upper-middle class and upper class predominantly white neighborhoods.
I think we have our answer as to why this isn't being spoken about by the current POTUS...
In Sept 09 ATL flood the worst hit flood areas in west metro were ALL lower income predominantly black neighborhoods.
So much for our douchebag POTUS being color-blind and post-racial...
No looting in Nashville is not surprising to me. You'll get your ass blown away if you try to loot something. Neighbors actually look out for each other in Nashville. It's just the culture there, and just one of the reasons I still think of Nashville as my true home. We get insulted and made fun of as being a redneck city, but Nashville is a great place to live.
Nashville and TN doesn't fucking need Obama's help, and most prolly don't want it anyway.

Mish already has a post questioning the current rush to blame "automated trading." The part that should frighten everyone is what Mish says at the end:
Regardless of what anyone finds, a trading error did not cause this collapse. The market collapsed because it was ready to collapse. A retest is likely coming up, especially if shorts covered in that dramatic rise off the bottom.

The coming years are going to suck for Britain, none of the parties has a clue what to do, and it's mostly international financiers who will be delivering the news anyway. This vote didn't matter, except insofar as whoever wins gets to be blamed for whatever unpleasantness comes up.
In the US, this election season, plenty of Republican candidates are Tea-Party sorts who do give the voters something to vote for. So I'm not telling anyone not to vote HERE. Please, do, get out and vote.

Country music understands its fans depend on real values and living up to them; not bling, hos and blow. There will be plenty of money given and benefit concerts done no matter what the empty suit in the Whitehouse and his Pravda-West quislings do to keep it on the QT.
Btw, Nashville is more than just country music; smokin' hot rock guitarists are prety much all over the place..

I was a bit perplexed at the slightly disheveled look of many of the on camera interview folks and even a few media personalities, until I remembered that there is a severe water shortage warning on for all of Metro Nashville. Earlier today one of Metro Nashville's council members sent out an e-mail alert to his constituents, imploring them to use their tap water only for drinking and cooking. He wrote, "Remember the Batman movie where the Joker poisoned the make-up supply? Remember how everyone in the movie looked? That's how we're all going to look, at least for the next few days" (paraphrased)
Good to see that the media and music folk are pitching in and doing their part by going along with the water restrictions.
Now, Keith Urban is on. Eep. *fans self a tad bit*

Thanks for posting the video. It breaks my heart to see all the devastation in my beloved Nashville. BTW, Nashville isn't just country music; the Southern Rock and Indi bands are making huge strides in TN.
Ace, I want your readers to know that not only was Nashville communities hit by flooding, 52 counties (of 95) have been declared a disaster! Homes, businesses, roads/bridges, enitre neighborhoods desimated. In Dyersburg (Northwest TN) nearly 300 families are flooded; they have lost everything. In Jackson roads gave way and swallowed cars and chunks of asphalt moved across the streets. Reports of 17 inches of rain fell in Brownsville. It is so sad.
The good people of Tennessee are out in droves; neighbors helping neighbors. It's who we are. It's what we've always done!

hey guys
this past weekend we had a little flood here in middle tennessee, just killed 20 people, 10 in Nashville alone. anyway this local writer tells how it is
We are Nashville.
Allow me a moment to step away from the usual voice of this website.
What I am about to write has absolutely nothing to do with hockey.
If you live outside of Nashville, you may not be aware, but our city was hit by a 500-year flood over the last few days. The national news coverage gave us 15 minutes, but went back to focusing on a failed car bomb and an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While both are clearly important stories, was that any reason to ignore our story? It may not be as terror-sexy as a failed car bomb or as eco-sexy as an oil spill, but thatÂ’s no reason to be ignored.
The Cumberland River crested at its highest level in over 80 years. Nashville had its highest rainfall totals since records began. People drowned. Billions of dollars in damage occurred. It is the single largest disaster to hit Middle Tennessee since the Civil War. And yetÂ…no one knows about it.
Does it really matter? Eventually, it willÂ…as I mentioned, there are billions of dollars in damage. It seems bizarre that no one seems to be aware that we just experienced what is quite possibly the costliest non-hurricane disaster in American history. The funds to rebuild will have to come from somewhere, which is why people need to know. ItÂ’s hard to believe that we will receive much relief if there isnÂ’t a perception that we need it.
But let’s look at the other side of the coin for a moment. A large part of the reason that we are being ignored is because of who we are. Think about that for just a second. Did you hear about looting? Did you hear about crime sprees? No…you didn’t. You heard about people pulling their neighbors off of rooftops. You saw a group of people trying to move two horses to higher ground. No…we didn’t loot. Our biggest warning was, “Don’t play in the floodwater.” When you think about it…that speaks a lot for our city. A large portion of why we were being ignored was that we weren’t doing anything to draw attention to ourselves. We were handling it on our own.
Some will be quick to find fault in the way rescue operations were handled, but the fact of the matter is that the catastrophe could not have been prevented and it is simply ignorant beyond all reason to suggest otherwise. It is a flood. It was caused by rain. You can try to find a face to stick this tragedy to, but youÂ’ll be wrong.
Parts of Nashville that could never even conceivably be underwater were underwater. Some of them still are. Opry Mills and the Opryland Hotel are, for all intents and purposes, destroyed. People died sitting in standstill traffic on the Interstate. We saw boats going down West End. And, of course, we all saw the surreal image of the portable building from Lighthouse Christian floating into traffic and being destroyed when cars were knocked into it. IÂ’m still having trouble comprehending all of it.
And yetÂ…life will go on. WeÂ’ll go back to work, to school, to our livesÂ…and weÂ’ll carry on. In a little over a month, IÂ’ll be on this website talking about the draft. In October, weÂ’ll be discussing the new PredatorsÂ’ season with nary a thought of these past few days. But in a way, they changed everyone in this town. We now know that that it can happen to usÂ…but also know that we can handle it.
Because we are Nashville.
FYI, the damage estimate for Nashville alone is STARTING at 1 billion dollars
this flood affected the entire middle tenn region ,33 counties every city, town
and one stop light hole-in-the-wall from kentucky to alabama. very expensive.
thanks
rol

The NOLA machine put it's supporters ( and probably dead people ) on the payroll as cops in order to get fed dollars for law enforcement. They then spent the pay.
When the feds wanted them to do actual police work during the flood, they sorta vanished.

Flooding brings up INSURANCE. And today's headline references Allstate/National Polling numbers. Today's public endorses the "promise but peril" investments. And a majority of Americans would vote for Obama again. Given that Allstate et al. insurance industry is bedding with Obama's administration, and Allstate's earnings missed forecasts after high first-quarter catastrophe losses, there's motivation for finding support for Obama whether real or not. Illusion is all that matters with the dollar value, insurance appraisals and financial investments. And the only way for insurance losing money via catastrophe collateral damage to stay afloat given the Tennessee flood is to convince everyone to close their eyes, click their heels, and repeat, "There's no one like Obama. There's no one like Obama." Cuts both ways.

http://bit.ly/aeuBiF
I have also noticed that the media coverage of this event was, shall we say, not what it would have been if it was in L.A. At the same time, while I'm no fan of the MSM (for different reasons that most here, I'd guess), I think it's mostly because people there are taking care of it themselves with a minimum of "media bait" - violence, an easy villian...a politically-charged story. It just hasn't been like that on the ground. It just rained a lot, period. People aren't thinking about that other stuff. They're just trying to help any way they can.
I'm from NJ. My experience in Nashville has been amazing. My immediate community is made of musicians, both very liberal and very conservative. We live side by side and make music all the time, even though we have *very* different views on any number of things. I'm not involved with organized religion myself, and yet I've had great fun and even joy out of doing church gigs. Democrats run the city (and are represented in Congress), but Republicans run the state government. It all seems to work very well. People are nice and the services (DMV, tax offices, etc.) work very smoothly.
I'm not trying to get off a kumbaya here, but I'd just invite everyone to consider the possibility that, despite what Rush had to say (and I've read the sports blog's post in full), it wasn't meant to be a political statement. It's just a rallying cry for a community. Ideally, it doesn't have to be owned by any particular political persuasion, even though I also get that this is a political blog and things tend to go there.
Anyway, I thought I'd offer this perspective from just about ground zero. As always, YMMV. But please, if you're so inclined, donate to the link above.
Thanks again for the open forum, Ace & co.

I love Nashville, it's one of my favorite cities.
This makes me sick.

Nashville people have character and the right stuff to make themselves whole again. They will do what they have to do to rebuild their city and their lives. These kinds of people are what makes this country great, despite the criminals in the legislative and executive branches of our national government.

The South in general has been bitch slapped by weather related devastation.
In AL we had tornadoes that ripped Albertville's downtown flat. Other area's got damaged too.
Our coast is about to become an oil covered wasteland that is going to devastate the tourism industry. See ya later, bye Redneck Riviera and Gulf fishing trips.
Heard ANY mention of us suffering? Didn't think so.
Nashville got more coverage but we aren't whining about it either.
Fuck the government and FEMA.

The government and media only help those who cannot help themselves.
