— Purple Avenger Old And Busted: "Unexpected"
The New Hotness: "Revised"
...The US economy expanded less vigorously than previously estimated in the final three months of 2009, but still showed its biggest rise in six years.Clue: Unemployed people don't buy a lot of stuff.According to the US Commerce Department, the economy expanded 5.6 per cent between October and December, down from an earlier estimate of 5.9 per cent published last month.
The downward revision, slightly worse than the 5.7 per cent expected by economists, was driven by a decline in business investment and inventories. Consumer spending was also less than originally thought...

Guess what - employed people don't spend sh*t either - especially when they foresee runaway inflation in their future.
My wife and I are savers. I don't give a flying f*ck how much stimulus these idiots throw out there: I refuse to waste my money.
Unfortunately, this could end up biting me in the a$$ in the long run, especially if the Dems get their hands on my IRA and 403b. Guess I should start investing more in guns and ammo...

In technical economic parlance, the term used for that kind of 'vigorous' rebound is a "Dead Cat Bounce".
Oh, and unemployed people do spend money. Just differently than before. I'd love to find out what the year over year 'investment rate' in lottery tickets has been doing of late. I swear I see more folks than ever before buying them, and not just one or two. More like 20 bucks worth and more at one time. Sad.
Under the old rubric of "you've gotta play to win" I do buy a ticket each week. But it a truism that the lottery is a tax on the mathematically illiterate.

5.6% actually sounds pretty good -- but it's just a one-time dead cat bounce. The economy is going to sink fast this year. Congress is pushing through economy-killing bills, and the Democrats have made one economically disruptive radical pronouncement after another. You can see high inflation just around the corner, and de facto default on government debts as well, partly through said inflation.
I think that no country on Earth is going to get through this without economic catastrophe.
Where can you put your money to protect yourself from inflation, if you have any money? Commodities? Maybe the gov't will just confiscate it wherever you put it anyway.
And what happens if there really is a Republican sweep in November? What's going to happen in 2011-2012?
Posted by: Wm T Sherman at March 27, 2010 11:55 AM (tm15w)
Realistically speaking, we should get two or three decent quarters out of this "recovery." Employers have cut their work forces so drastically, that they've already priced in low demand.
For instance, my father-in-law works at a plant in Florida that makes windows. They've been absolutely crushed by the housing slump.
However, they've cut so many employees, that he's back to working 50 hour weeks. I see a small rebound prior to a double-dip once the stimulus is withdrawn and taxes go up.
I could be wrong, but I think the economy will be as bad or worse in 2012 than it is now.

Clue: Unemployed people don't buy a lot of stuff.
Exfuckingzactly!
And then merchants stop buying stuff. And then manufacturers, in turn, stop making a lot of stuff.
And then the merchants, who have fewer customers, lay-off employees. Manufacturers, who don't make a lot of stuff, lay-off employees.

Anyone?...Anyone?Knockoff? What exactly do you mean? I've got a Rock River Arms AR-15 and it has never given me any trouble. They're a bit pricey now, though, so I'm glad I placed my order in October '08. Prices have dropped since their peak.
Problem is ammo costs. I don't like to put cheap, steel-cased ammo through it. You might be better off with a cheap AK variant, like a WASR-10; I have one and have consistently sought out the cheapest ammo from the sketchiest Russian factories and it has eaten it all up. Cheaper to shoot=more time spent practicing.

Was this an unexpected revision?
This kinda reminds me of when I was working for a company (that will remain Nortel) that would lay off a third of its software developers on December to bump earnings estimates for the next year, then hire new developers on January. Completely wrecked product work flow and effectively rendered over 1/3 of the developers useless due to inexperience (it took 18 mos. training before they could actually do useful things).
So I guess we'll avoid the technical definition of a recession by occassionally bumping GDP with slash and burn management techniques. That'll work well.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is making 15 recess appointments and blaming Senate Republicans for forcing his hand.
In a written statement, Obama says the positions include key members of his economic team, as well as members of the National Labor Relations Board and the head of Customs and Border Protection.
Obama says the Senate has the responsibility to accept or reject his nominees, but that Republicans won't even do that.
Obama says he must act and fill the jobs on an interim basis. Congress is out of session on a break for the Easter and Passover holidays.

What was lost (or deliberately omitted) in the irrational exuberance over the high GDP numbers is that companies were simply restocking their inventories, after a year of slow sales finally reduced their previous year stocks. The fact that sales tax revenues in states and municipalities went through the floor last year is evidence enough of this.
And as long as unemployment remains high, it won't get better in real terms, because people will only replace their goods on an "as needed" basis rather than an "as wanted" basis.
The administration simply used this number as "proof" we were coming out of the depression, and Wall Street used it to goose the overvalued Dow Jones even higher.

Having lost my mind and obtaining a degree in the dismal science, I was not surprised to see inventory declines all year and pent up demand pick up in the 4th when inventories were exhausted. Paralyzed with crippled credit lines, a two trillion transfer of wealth, meant most Americans just stared into the headlights. I expect GDP to reduce and flatten out in the 2% range, at best.
The real big fucking elephant in the room is the 60 trillion dollar debt (13 actual, 45 in entitlements) that will absolutely cripple us. That debt load is inescapable and unmanageable. And largely ignored. We can't even chip away at principal. Barely financing the interest. The next big conspiracy will be a VAT tax. It absolutely has to come and it won't be enough. Should interest rates suddenly rise, greet the economic collapse with a big hearty hug.

When bad things are done, like the Reichstag Fire, or Kristallnacht, or Neveille Chamberlain's selling out of Europe for a scrap of paper, of course the bad results don't happen right away.
Look at it like this, doing the bad thing is like pulling back on the slingshot rubberband. Once the rubberband is released, it then goes sailing into things, producing the bad results.
So yeah, it's going to take a little time for the bad results to start piling up to where people notice them. But the bad results are going to be as big as boulders and impossible to ignore.
And I don't believe the GDP was 5.9% OR 5.6%, I think it's all a lie. There are more empty storefronts, more judicial sales notices in the newspaper, and more people I know out of work. It's all a pack of lies.

5.9% growth would have been better than 5.6%, but unless there is some evidence that the higher figure was arrived at dishonestly, then there really isn't anything to complain about.
Of course that 5.6% was prior to the passing of ObamaCare.
If we should be complaining about anything it should be that ObamaCare is going to stifle economic growth just as our economy is starting to see some positive movement.
