Sen. Voinovich (Retard-OH) Has a Bright Idea
— Gabriel Malor

The drooling idiot thinks that the thing to do to counter rising unemployment rates is to make it more costly to get to work. No, really, he's just that stupid.

In a letter to members of President Obama's debt commission, Voinovich laid out his argument for the increase.

"Fuel taxes today fund the vast majority of the federal government's investment in infrastructure projects," Voinovich wrote in the letter. "Due to dwindling fuel tax receipts, Congress has had to transfer billions of dollars from the General Fund to the Highway Trust Fund to maintain our current level of federal involvement."

Voinovich said the tax hike is needed to help keep the Highway Trust Fund afloat.

Voinovich, the ranking member on the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, has been pushing the idea of a hike for a while.

“I believe Americans are willing to pay a higher gas tax to create jobs, improve our infrastructure and better our climate," Voinovich said at a business conference in Ohio last month. "And many of my conservative colleagues do not consider that gas tax as a tax, but as a user fee.

Artificially raising the cost of labor -- and the cost of every other good or service that is transported by road -- in order to let the government fund a new Senator Byrd Memorial Bridge in every state is not a cure for Obama's unemployment rate.

6 I just love it when senile fools like Voinovich claim to know that people "wouldn't mind" paying higher taxes.

After all, look what we get: More bennies for union thugs, flossier vacations for the Traitor-in-Chief, projects that study the effects of drugs on monkeys, building named after Zombie Robert Byrd and Charlie Rangel, signs telling us about the wonderful "stimulus" projects some crackpot desk-jockey in a gubmint office dreams up, A Department of Justice for Some that cuts members of favored groups free, wide-open borders welcoming new Democrat voters illegals....

Ah, fuck it. The list is endless, and it makes me sick to think about it.

So I'll just say: Screw you, Voinovich. You want to pay higher taxes? Be my guest!

If we had a trustworthy Supreme Court, I'd want to see that "user fee" shit shut down once and for all. As Joltin' Joe Biden would say, "it's a three-letter word -- T-A-X-E-S."

8 We just got an ad requesting, and I quote, "vote yes to 1/2 penny for our schools." The ad NEVER says where this 1/2 penny is going to come from, they just say that one 1/2 penny will raise $13.5 million dollars per year and cost the average citizen less than a dollar a week or $49.00 per year. But they NEVER say how that 1/2 penny will be paid. Even my 17 year commented on that, and said "This is just another tax, isn't it?" Too bad we have to put him in public school this year-all those smarts may just fade away.

I'm in Michigan. Remember when gas went up to $5 per gallon because of... who the he11 knows? Any ways, gas consumption went way down here, since 2/3 of the people here drive SUV's and did not want to pay $75 twice a week to drive. So... the governor (Gov. Ms. Idiot-D) started floating the idea that we needed a higher gas tax because we weren't consuming enough gas, and we didn't have enough money to fix the roads.

In other words:
Consuming gas= bad
Not consuming gas= bad

So, according to democrats, logic is really sort of deranged and drunken circle jerk?

A user fee? For roads, bridges, and etc. I presume. Fine. If gas taxes are really a user fee why am I not able to optain a refund on those taxes for gasoline not used in vehicles while driven on the public infrastructure? If I am using a 5 gallons a gas a day driving around my own farm why do I need to pay a user fee for the roads? If I am using 20 gallons a day to run a generator on a construction project why am I required to pay a road user fee? I only pay tolls when I actually use a road or bridge. I don't mail cash to the State of New York for the GW bridge when I ride my quad around my  yard to take care of the toll.

With respect to that anarchist, Marilyn Buck, who just died, I've got to say that there was a beautiful, talented and intelligent woman, who was so psychotic and delusional, also, that she she completely wasted her entire life, spending most of her adult life in prison for senseless crimes which she committed, instead of realizing her potential.  What a waste.

Instead of learning from that very sick freak's many mistakes, though, her equally psychotic friends and fellow anarchists regard her as a martyr. Go figure.

71 I shall speak, as an Ohioan. This state never used to be bad. The late 80s-90s were golden years here. We had Greg Lashutka as mayor here in Columbus, a damned good conservative mayor, and Columbus was THE test market for many companies. Voinovich wasn't as godawful as he is now, and most of the looney libs were pretty much confined to the North Coast (i.e. Cleveland metro and Toledo). We had low unemployement, expansion galore, I tell you, they were good times. Now: Columbus' mayor, Greg Coleman, 8 years now, mainly because the libs have discovered the booming market in Columbus and migrated from Cleveland and other places here, which helps keep Coleman elected. The illegal (Mexican mainly) immigration has tripled at least (in the past 5 years Columbus gained a Spanish speaking station), Now we have Strickland as a Gov. We have one far left crap Senator (Sherrod--god, I'm hating this name), and one who might as well be Left. I'm praying that we can at least get Kasich to win against Strickland...that might start to help the state get back to some sense, but as for Columbus...unless Coleman (and his drunk wife Frankie) gets booted out, I'm not holding out much hope in the capital.

74 Draw a line from the Northwest corner of Ohio to the Southeast corner. Above the line our state is blue, below is red. That would make Columbus 1/2 and 1/2, but I'm thinking you'd have to bend the line so that Columbus is now in the blue section (except for perhaps the southern suburbs.), and also, I'd probably bend the SE corner up a bit...I think much of the southern half of Columbus is pretty conservative (Athens excepted, perhaps, and maybe parts of Dayton).

Ohio's been a union-supporting, blue-collar, class-war-fighting state since the late 60's and a distressing number of Ohioans have had nothing to depend on but Uncle Suggy's green since high-sulfur coal, small farms and heavy industry went to shit in the 70's.

Um, you are the only one "appointing me" as spokesman here, mate. All I did was express an opinion to counter "just a thoughts" argument that we vacillate that much. You know, someone who's lived in this state for about 35 years might have some sort of notion as to what's going on here. John Glenn's tenure is due to him being a "hero", and a patriot, that's pretty much it. Metzenbaum, had a pretty solid lock on the Northeastern section of Ohio (High population democratic areas--Cleveland metro, Akron, Canton, Youngstown). The Michigan migration started especially in the 90s as the state started going to pot. Glad to see you can scorn from your lofty tower there in California, which seems to have far greater problems at present...but I'm not going to presume to speak for California either. Prescription's free. So are opinions. If you don't like mine, don't respond to me.

89 I almost get the feeling that they sit in their conference rooms with a board and movable pieces on which are printed all the money we pay in taxes, the outright ones and the hidden ones.  Today one of my lib/dem friends said "pretty soon they are going to have a breathing tax, that you pay every day and is included in your income tax"....my other friend said "be quiet, you might give them ideas".

90 Curious: "pretty soon they are going to have a breathing tax, that you pay every day and is included in your income tax"....my other friend said "be quiet, you might give them ideas". Hm, well, isn't the taxing of CO2 sort of along those lines? I think they already have that idea.

Posted by: cheshirecat at August 07, 2010 11:36 PM (gIPhX)

91 This sounds like such a convoluted ideas that you wonder what is going on in DC.  People abandon logic and reason when they get there.  All along the way the guys on the financial channels, even CNBC, were saying "the more people you have out of work and losing their houses, the less revenue you are going to get in taxes"...what about that simple concept do these people not understand?  Dear God, I really hope they are all not stupide enough to think they can just tax their way out of this...it would be nearly impossible and people would be working 11 months for the government and a month for themselves, no one could survive those conditions.

Posted by: curious at August 07, 2010 11:42 PM (p302b)

92 They are stuck.  Americans are retiring credit and credit cars at a record rate.  They are scrambling to try and pay their debts and retire them too..  They are saving and not buying anything frivolous anymore.  In the economy of the 1930's that was the right thing to do.  But in a service based economy where nothing is really produced in this country anymore, they are literally choking the system with their retiring of credit, saving and lack of buying.  If they don't buy the "services" then the economy begins to choke and the flow of money isn't there and liquidity is gone.  The corporations are doing the same thing and short of compelling them to spend by law, they have every right to do that as they aren't sure what is coming their way.  Probably so much money has flowed out of this country to "safe havens" it isn't even funny.  So all this money is static, parked, not moving and the liquidty begins to dry up and things get worse.   This was caused by the dems and they are the ones who should have to fix it...and it starts with extending the bush tax cuts across the board.   Otherwise you'll see Americans and corporations horde even more and things will get worse.

They are saving and not buying anything frivolous anymore. Can't blame them, especially if their jobs are tenuous or they aren't getting any raises. I'm in that situation myself. I haven't had my modest 2% raise in about 2 years (and I don't expect one this coming year either) and costs are still going up (my rent went up last year another $50. 95 Good Morning Morons

I don't know if this has been said yet because I haven't read all the posts.

No Voinovich is not stupid. Like all liberal politicians, he is a damn liar.

That is a GD lie. In fact it is the exact opposite of the truth.  The government routinely raids the highway fund for general revenue items. Not only that the commies a few years back in their zeal to supply cities like Detroit with operating funds came up with a scheme to rob 20% of all the highway funds to pay for mass transit in the urban areas. Never mind that the cities were already paying for this through fares and taxes lets give them 20% of all the gasoline taxes. Then they can use that money on some more socialism, graft, and corruption.

Folks, this is just a harbinger of things to come from this so-called budget commission.  It is 3/4 commie and 1/4 RINO so expect every solution to involve some kind of tax increase.

96 Wow, looking over the comments we find two posters, both nominally from OH flaming each other over OH.

I've been to OH several times have some friends there, as well as a neice-in-law(?) from there. We have numerous conservative posters on here from OH. Right now from an overall standpoint, I would say OH is a purple State.

Like all States, OH has the "urban island effect" and it is not heat. Any city with a population over 35K is going to go hardcore liberal because, for what ever reason, minorities gravitate to the cities and vote in blocks for Democrats.  When that happens pretty soon the city becomes a model of communist failure complete with graft and corruption, in short it becomes another Detroit.

Yes Voinobitch is a RINO. Hell his lifetime rating is 69.8 and in 2008 it was 52. That's near DIABLO territory. I haven't pulled all the years but I am sure that he did hit DIABLO some years.

He is retiring this year probably because he sees the handwriting on the wall. Too bad our own Lindsey Graham SOB is up for election this year as well.

If he was he would be retiring as well, whether he did it on his own or not.

97 Vic: Wow, looking over the comments we find two posters, both nominally from OH flaming each other over OH. Hi, Vic! I think 35 years qualifies a bit more than "nominally", but I wasn't intending to flame anyone. I did respond when I was attacked though. Any city with a population over 35K is going to go hardcore liberal because, for what ever reason, minorities gravitate to the cities and vote in blocks for Democrats. I think you are probably right, but it wasn't always the case for Columbus...it had a fairly solid conservative population for the longest time (if you look at the list of mayors for Columbus, you'll see that 90% of them were Republican).

We had been sending her to a secular private school here and they shut down all the grades above 7th because of "lack of interest by parents" due to no football.

102 I see from a linked story from the NYT at Drudge that the WH claims that the Worf is paying for her own costs on the vacation trip, except for security. I'm sure that includes the cost of transportation as well huh?

But in any case, does anyone actually believe this?

I don't believe a single thing this crowd says anymore.

Posted by: Vic at August 08, 2010 02:30 AM (/jbAw)

103 LOL, we have often remarked about the libtard assholes in these cities faced with budget cuts and how they moan that they are going to lay off cops and teachers unless they get a tax hike.

Well here is a new wrinkle on this (via Drudge) in Camden, NJ.  Not only are they going to shut down all their libraries but the have to get rid of the books as well....why?

Because they are a fire hazard!

The library board president says the library system, which opened in 1904, is preparing to donate, sell or destroy its collections, including 187,000 books.

Board president Martin McKernan says keeping the books around would pose a fire hazard.

The question is, will Chris Christie allow them to do this?

The only time I have seen a book pose a fire hazard is when some tard decides he doesn't like what is in one and wants to burn it.

108 Tim Scott (R-SC) is the black conservative Republican from the SC legislature running for SC district 1 seat vacated by ousted RINO Inglis.

He is attending a rally by a newly formed black conservative organization in SC.  But it is tough to get the word out there about either with these misleading headlines by AP in the Charleston paper.

What does it tell you when you read this headline?

Black conservatives rally for immigration

You would think there is a group of black conservatives holding a rally to support increasing immigration. And in today's climate, probably amnesty as well. None of these things normally the work of any conservative organization. Also, no mention of Tim Scott at all in the headline.

But here are some nips from the story:

COLUMBIA -- A black conservative organization in South Carolina rallied people at the Statehouse on Saturday to support tougher immigration laws.

State. Rep. Tim Scott, who is running for South Carolina's 1st congressional district seat was the speaker and would be the first black Republican congressman since Oklahoma's J.C. Watts retired in 2003.

"One thing the federal government should be doing is stopping illegal immigration," Scott said to the crowd of roughly 150 people -- who were almost all white.

Still, Scott was one of only a handful of blacks attending the rally sponsored by the newly formed South Carolina Black Conservative Movement.

http://tinyurl.com/36mtqos

So why the headline and why all the bias in the story?

Duh, its AP of course.

I've despised Voinovich since the day he became governor.  He's the dickhead that started a great state down the slope to what it's become.  We had one of the lowest overall tax loads in the country when he took office.  Now we're mentioned in the same breath as California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.  Portman will win the Senate seat, and I'm assuming John "Check out the Hair" Kasich will take the governor's seat, although Strickland really hasn't been all that bad, for a Dem, except for this dipshit idea of "high-speed rail", meaning of course an average speed of 34 miles per hour between Cincinnati and Cleveland.  Why they're pushing this boondoggle is beyond me.

I've been in Ohio since 1972 and Groin-itch is a worthless RINO fuck.  He would be a Cuyahoga Country drone if it wasn't for the fact that some drunk shithead driving a van hit and killed his young daughter Molly when he was running for mayor against Kucinich.  That turned the votes of the bluehairs away from "that cute little" commie cocksucker over to crying George and, as they say, the rest is history.  He's never met a tax increase he didn't like and has always had the good fortune of never having had a primary challenge (thanks a fucking lot, Ohio Repuke party) or running in the general election against complete idiots.

He used to steer a lot of bidness to his crook brother Paul, who died recently and he's probably retiring because there's nobody left to shovel the pork to.  Regarding comments on the voting breakdown of the state, could somebody explain that asshole twitch Strickland to me?  That fuckstick came from what I thought was a conservative area and he's been completely worthless as a governor.  Truth be known, we haven't had a decent governor since Rhodes.

This doesn't strike me as being as bad as the "high-speed" rail line the loons in CA want to build, and for which the citizens have already authorized at least one hefty bond issue on top of funds ordered up by legislators.

Speeds (supposedly) of 200 mph or more, running from San Diego to Sacramento -- at least it'll get illegals from the border to the heartland quickly, even if no one else but gubmint workers want to go anywhere near Sacto -- while apparently pretty much bypassing L.A., and running through the state's biggest earthquake fault zone. What could go wrong?

8B for high speed rail, but keep in mind that this only pays for short blocks between two local areas.  The States would have to fork over big piles of money to complete all these "green" lines shown on the map.

Obammy gets more union jobs, more money spent by the government therefore more taxes and he claim "green green green" all the way to bankruptcy.

153 O/T How did Ted Olson turn into such a fuckhead on gay marriage?

154 mornin' all
yeah, at a different time and under different circumstances, I might favor government spending on high-speed rail - I have a bit of a soft spot in my heart for trains myself, and I do think it could do a lot to alleviate airline traffic and improve safety overall for long-distance transportation, with fewer people driving over relatively more dangerous interstate highways.

BUT - under the current situation?  No way, as (1) we are BROKE and (2) the "high-speed rail" we are talking about isn't all that high-speed, it's just a slightly faster version of Amtrak

so I'll pass, thankyouverymuch

Road courses are the best thing about NASCAR these days. Usually good, close racin' and a place for drivers new to the series to stand out. Wish they'd run top-line cars at Elkhart Lake and Laguna Seca without ordering track changes that would make those tracks as sterile as some of the ovals....

I don't like the new wide runoffs areas at Watkins Glen. They have become part of the racing line, and thus defeat the purpose for which they were installed.

Oh, well. I remember watching the NASCAR gang at Riverside, CA back in the 1960s and '70s. Them ole boys had lots of trouble getting around there. Great fun, and the Fords, Shivolays, etc. actually almost looked like the ones in the showrooms!

170 27 - Also, as a result of cars getting better gas mileage (a government mandate), the state of California was seeing a drop in revenues from their state gas tax. Solution - switch over to a tax based on the number of miles driven between fill ups.  And to accomplish this they were able to get people to voluntarily (as a part of a "pilot project") install a transponder in their cars that could be read by meters at the gas station.

The problem I have seen with this proposed "switchover" is that it isn't a "switchover" at all. Its the old bait and switch more than switchover. They wish to add the "miles driven tax" to the already existing fuel tax.

Never ever vote for a tax increase or a tax "replacement" unless an ironclad unbreakable rule is put in place that keeps the "replaced tax" from being brought back.

The answer to all this "marry a beer keg/animal/sibling" stuff is simple:

Move to Japan, and marry a robot or a Sim.

Posted by: MrScribbler at August 08, 2010 06:08 AM (Ulu3i)

184 Roads fail from two causes - weathering and traffic. The traffic part is interesting - a 40 ton 18 wheeler does hundreds to thousands of times the damage of car/SUV. Damage goes as the cube of axle weight - give or take, not an exact formula by any means. Rail freight is up because it is more efficient and that doesn't include the hidden subsidy car drivers give the big trucks - we gave the railroads all the subsidies in the 19th century and still do for commuter rail - a stupid idea anywhere but the NE corridor. Still pales compared to the big rig subsidy.

Back on topic - it still is a tax - if it were a rational user fee, big rigs would pay a lot more per gallon into the highway fund. Our roads and bridges are in terrible shape locally. For more than a decade, one of our interstates' overpasses was largely held up by giant pressure treated wood columns and girders. We still have a truck detour on I95 around a bridge that was so rusted it couldn't take the weight cycling of trucks - the tipping point there was a crack a few feet long. Old. Worn out. Need new. Don't need bike paths and light rail funded by automotive taxes - you riders should fund them your own damn selves.

What you are missing and what I keep posting on this thread is that there is no need for any of the roads and bridges to be deteriorating.  There is ample money being collected from the various highway tax items that are supposed to go towards road/bridge maintenance.

The problem is they are spending it on other things and then saying look "we need more road taxes".

it is the same bait and switch crap they do every time the economy goes downhill; need more taxes or we'll lay off cops and firemen. Then when economy recovers they increase social spending.

Yep.  Just as they did with that $250 billion extorted from the tobacco companies, ostensibly to use to fund other health insurance that the pols wanted (even though smokers cost less, in health care, than others, as cigarette smokers die younger and quicker than normal people).  That money just disappeared into everything but health insurance for anyone.  ... Half-baked mosque

Developer owns only part of site

Not so fast.

The developers of the controversial mosque proposed near Ground Zero own only half the site where they want to construct the $100 million building, The Post has learned.

One of the two buildings on Park Place is owned by Con Edison, even though Soho Properties told officials and the public that it owns the entire parcel. And any potential sale by Con Ed faces a review by the state Public Service Commission.

“We never heard anything about Con Ed whatsoever,” said a stunned Julie Menin, the chairwoman of Community Board 1, which passed a May resolution supporting the mosque.

I get a kick out of the fact that liberals will try to force condoms to be handed out to 12 year olds, but then those same liberals will argue that the condom receiving 12 year olds can't be consenting adults to marriage (even as they're being encouraged to have sex by the liberals) and therefore marriage to children could never possibly be argued using the same basis that libs use to tear 'marriage' to shreds.  It's almost funny.  Almost.

192 #4, my little burb in Ca. pulled the same trick--forced us to conserve, then charged us more because their revenues were down. I'm sure city managers tell each other these kind of tricks at their confabs. F them.

Also, our local civic building turned down its air conditioning to be "green". One Monday morning, they opened up the valves to fire it up again and blew out all the pipes! The only good news was it gave local contractors a heap of money to repair the pipes and clean up the ocean in the basement of the building.  F them too.

Didn't miss it at all. I want to pay proportionately lower fuel taxes and have fewer 18 wheelers in my way - send the heavy crap by rail. Love it when I can't see more than a K'worth bumper in my rear view mirror and wonder whether the driver is all amped up or half asleep. The road repairs will be funded somehow - let the carless urban dwellers pick up more of their share of transporting their daily necessities through higher fees on that transport.

I have no idea whether the Highway Trust Fund has enough money even if all the money only went to legitimate highway needs. Roads and bridges are damn expensive where they are needed most.

Tami, great link from the Post. Thank you.

From the NY Post article linked: El-Gamal told The Post his long-term lease was equivalent to ownership (really?) and that it even allowed him to demolish the building (Con Ed might think differently). Still, he said, he was determined to buy the property. “The cost is not an issue,” he said.
The cost is not an issue. Really. 1) Money from Saudi Arabia.  This mosque is a political act, not one of freedom of religion. 2) This is very much another cultural assault on the very Constitutional rights being ballyhooed that are trying to be protected. Warfare by other means.   Lastly, I'm from Ohio (lived here all my life, all over the state), and know some of the political prinicples involved.  All I can say is it's time for George to retire, which he is doing.  It could be worse (Howard Metzenbaum, grrrrr!, or Joel Hyatt, his imbecile son-in-law), as Ohio Dan mentioned  who George's opposition was in the last two Senate races.   Like Vic said, Ohio is a "purple" state, with the inner urban areas trending Democrat and the suburbs and rural areas trending Republican. And Coleman as Mayor of Columbus has turned into a jerk (and his drunken wife, heh).  He'll be Mayor for as long as he wants, because the Dispatch (crappy newspaper that it is) carries water for him and  would empty his drool bucket if asked.

203 Near where I live on the Northern California coastside, a new highway tunnel is going in. It cost $110M to build, with generous federal grants.

A surface bypass would have cost less than one-third of that to construct. And if the federal teat had been cut off, the surface road would have been built instead of the tunnel.

Why throw away money we don't have on an unnecessary tunnel?

A sop to the environmentalists, who claimed a surface road would be horribly damaging to the environment (the area through which it would run is scrubby rocky wasteland not noted for biodiversity), and to the trades unions, who of course realized that the fat price tag of a tunnel meant more boodle siphoned into their pockets.

THAT circus is the sort of thing which federal gas taxes enable. Don't fall for it.

Our brilliant government in Oregon has been preaching green jobs/green energy/ hybrid cars and all that bullshit for years.  So what so they do when they find out higher mileage cars result in less gas tax reciepts?  They propose equipping these cars with GPS so the government can track where they have been driving and send them a bill in the mail, thus destroying the whole incentive of owning one of these cars in the first place.

Errr, Chief, would you believe...when we force you to buy insurance, well that's actually a tax, so it's okay!  If we raise taxes on gasoline, well, that's not really a tax, it's a fee!  See how easy this is!   Tax, fee, tax, fee!  Hey, let's put a toll on every road in the country and call them admission tickets!   Your income taxes will be raised, but we'll just call them National Service Donations.  After all this, we'll tell them we have completely eliminated taxes!  And then we can say the Republicans were against eliminating taxes!  Ha!

208 Face it .. this is an attempt to make a sow’s ear into a purse .. it’s a repackage of a “carbon tax”.
… and George Vionovich … is as amusing as a “Slinky” .. he will make you laugh when pushed down a flight of stairs.

209 My big question is, who are Voinovich's "conservative" colleagues in Congress who agree with him that a gas tax hike is a good idea? Inquiring Minds (and Voters) Want To Know.

Voinovoich is afflicted with cranial-rectal inversion disease.  Unfortunately, we have several politicians in the state of Ohio with that condition. Kucinich, Sutton, and Brown all need a tript to the proctologist for a head extraction.
