Shocker: Democrats Want Another Do-Over on Nominee
— Ace

Someone wrote recently that a primary is only a "first-draft" for the Democrats as regard who their candidate will be; courts (Democrat-owned) will permit any sort of candidate switching, even against the clear law of the state, up until election night.

Anyway, the guy who held a knife to his girlfriend's neck? Will probably not really be the Democratic candidate after all.

From Boots:

Quinn expects Cohen to leave guv. race ticket over abuse claim Feb. 04, 2010

(AP) — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he expects Scott Lee Cohen ultimately will have to step down as the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor over charges that he once abused his girlfriend.

Quinn called Thursday for Cohen to answer all questions about his 2005 arrest for domestic battery. But Quinn says he thinks Cohen will end up dropping out of the race.

Illinois voters choose the nominees for governor and lieutenant governor separately. Quinn and Cohen did not campaign together, but now they make up the Democratic ticket.

Quinn says he learned of the allegations after Tuesday's election.

The hell he did. What he learned is that the voters had learned of the charges.

3 The Democrats seem to be wanting to vote on bills before they are written.
Can they get Democrats to vote for a candidate to be named later?

4 And what if Scott Cohen decides that he will not step down?  Will Quinn have to re-form the Illinois Solidarity Party so he can still run without having to associate himself with this guy?

9 Quinn isn't too bright.  He's a really nice guy.  He's like a high school teacher that really wants to get you interested in the subject and will work his ass off to help you succeed.

But he's really a poor politician.  He doesn't have any courage to advance the best strategy in his own party.  He always caves to pressure.

This quote might be really bad for him.  It's hard to believe that NOBODY ever talked to him about Cohen's past.  Reporters knew about it.  They wrote columns about it.

11 Now the republicans and conservatives have the onus of checking out who vets the candidates in their states and whether or not all the "rules" are being followed.  You can take a page form BO's book, get rid of all your opponents ahead of time and you have a win.

14 You'd THINK this guy would have been vetted before getting the nomination.

Are the Dems that stupid or that lazy?

(Answer. . .both).

I think in IL the Dems are so used to just plopping their nominees in place they've never really even had to consider the viability of candidates in actual contests.

66 OT:  Landrieu's getting pissy...pissier?

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports: DonÂ’t mess with Mary Landrieu.

The Democratic Senator from Louisiana has had about enough of people criticizing the clause she helped put into the Senate version of health care reform and she took to the Senate floor today, giving a fiery defense of special funding for Louisiana that Republicans have derisively nicknamed “the Louisiana Purchase” – implying the language was put in to buy Landrieu’s vote.

Today on the Senate floor, Landrieu told her naysayers to “keep their mouth shut.”

She pointed out that Republicans in Louisiana, including Governor Bobby Jindal and a good number of Republican Congressmen, have all asked publicly for Louisiana to be given the extra money to meet its Medicaid commitments.

94 It's so old it's new.     A wise man (Solomon, I think) said, "There is nothing new under the sun."  Sadly, he's right.

95 Just because Cohen's ex-wife asked for and got an order of protection against him, he allegedly attacked his hooker ex-girlfriend and he had some Federal tax problems should not keep him from running from office in Illinois. There are some rumors that Alexi's bank had connections to the Russian mob. Again not a problem in Illinois.

96 Guy -- I already predicted a few Kirk threads ago that Gino might step down and be replaced.

97 Cade, what a cool name!  And if he takes after you, I'm sure he's doing just fine.  He'll learn how to barbecue and fish and be sweet to the ladies and do the right thing whether it's convenient or not.  That's not indoctrination, that's a gift!

In fact, I'd say you'd better expect that -- Gino's going to probably be replaced (after Chicago has rubbed their favorite native son's nose in him a bit -- you notice Daley and Co. aren't saying much; I think Gino might have been a bit of bitch slap from Chitown to D.C. with love).  I am really thinking that was the plan all along -- and then some very nasty stuff is going to start getting ran about Kirk (worse than the whole "ghey" thing -- that really isn't that much of a biggie, it's just a special cherry on top of the shit sundae).

Somebody needs to vet Kirk's service records really closely and make sure there's nothing there to get him with.
