Side By Side: 8/28 vs. 10/2
— Ace

You have to see this comparison.

You won't be surprised to hear a lot of extremist groups sponsored this "grassroots" march.

And you want diversity, you got it. The march was full of a diverse sampling of bussed-in union workers.

The union presence was so ubiquitous and so organized that it made for a kind of color coding in the crowd. Looking around, there were large groups of people bunched into separate areas, all wearing the same color T-shirts to mark their union affiliation. There were groups wearing the purple SEIU shirt, others wearing the red CWA shirt, others wearing the blue AFT shirt, and still others wearing green shirts and yellow shirts and so on. There were long rows of tables where union workers sat waiting to get people connected to their groups and their buses. There were thousands of union-printed signs.

Organizers will deny that the march was a total union job, compared to the more grassroots character of tea party gatherings. And it's true that union allies like the NAACP also played a big part in staging "One Nation Working Together." But it's safe to say the rally would have been nothing without labor's money and organizing strength.

...

Kathryn Riss said she attended the 1963 rally at the Lincoln Memorial, when she was just 16 years old, and came back 46 years later for the inauguration of Barack Obama. This time, she traveled from New Jersey on what she called the "peace bus" ("the Communications Workers of America very graciously paid our way," she explained), and she held a homemade blue flag with a white dove stitched into the middle.

As Michel Barone said, they assumed the Tea Party was a bought-and-paid for false demonstration because that's what theirs are.

And Glenn Reynolds says "I told you so."

Despite my pleasure in saying “I told you so,” I don’t deserve all that much credit. It was easy to see this coming if you paid attention.

Both political parties are out of touch, and ordinary Americans are very unhappy about it, as they watch the Treasury being looted, the economy sink, and the political, journalistic, and financial ruling-class figures escaping the consequences of their ham-handed and self-serving actions.

But while ordinary Americans are mad as hell, this time they really donÂ’t have to take it any more. Institutions have failed them, but Internet tools like blogs, Twitter, and Facebook, and personal tools -- like the cheap handheld video cameras that beat back bogus charges of Tea Party racism again and again -- mean that they donÂ’t have to rely on failing institutions.

...

But those establishment GOP figures who think that theyÂ’ll cruise to victory and a return to the pocket-stuffing business-as-usual that marked the prior GOP majority need to think again. This election cycle is, in a very real sense, a last chance for the Republicans. If they blow it, weÂ’re likely to see third-party challenges in 2012, not only at the Presidential level but in numerous Congressional races as well.

For the national GOP, it’s do-or-die time. So guys, you’d better perform -- unless you want me to be writing another “I told you so” column in 2013. And trust me, you don’t.

One thing I've advised people in a bloodletting sort of mood is to bear in mind how quickly this all happened, and how enormous it is. And I say that as a way of suggesting, "Allow those who didn't quite get it a little leeway in catching up with the new normal."

I thought the Tea Party would influence the GOP. I did not think that the GOP would wind up influencing the Tea Party. Know what I mean? I thought the Tea Party would be the tail that dog wags; but it turns out, the Tea Party is the dog, and the GOP merely the tail.

This sudden upheaval was entirely unpredictable... except, of course, to those who predicted it, but for those of us who didn't predict it, it was entirely unpredictable, we're still catching up.

I say this in interests of promoting peace. We're not enemies; some of us are just nine months behind the news, you know?

5 What the Left will do, in an Orwellian style, is switch the photos and claim that the one taken of the Tea Party rally is actually the union assembly and vice versa.  Isn't that right out of Stalin's bag of tricks?

6 I have been saying this for a long time now. This election is not like any other since 1861. Joe Sixpack has taken to the streets.

When Mom and Pop are out marching carrying signs we have a new paradigm. Old Cris Wallace tries to make out like this is "anti-incumbent" because some Republicans were primaried out but if you look at the ones that were they were all liberal aisle crossers who helped the Dems.

If the Republicans don't "get it" this time they will cease to be a meaningful Party in ten years.

Okay what's the population of DC? You're telling me they couldn't at least get some of those folks out? They probably went for Obama, what, 90-95%?

Add in the unions that paid for travel arrangments/food and they couldn't even  produce a quarter of what Beck drew (and that's probably being generous).

They really are in for a world of hurt come 11/3. Good. Fuck 'em. I watched a good portion of that Hate America pep rally yesterday. It was disgusting. These shitstains aren't my American brothers and sisters. They're beggars that were paid and bought for their attendance and they left their trash behind on our national treasures.

Fair enough, and something equally important to remember when dealing with folks who got duped (genuinely duped, not folks that have always been liberals) by the Obama campaign and are now wising up.

Also, if you haven't already, make sure you email links to the online coverage of Commiefest to anyone who needs a reminder to vote.  I've gotten pretty positive response from folks I emailed about it already.

This.  Big time.  8/28 was 500,000 middle aged men and women, little old ladies, military, younger familys...people we all see everyday.

Not freakish looking buffoons, hipsters, union thugs and other assorted parisites on our economy.

They came at there own expense like I did, hotels, cars, gas, food...to make a statement.

It wasn't even about Glenn Beck either.  It was a tea party event, sans signs.  People were motivated to send a message.

Yeah I hear that.  Was basically why I went.  The curiosity factor as well.  I'm hardly a take to the streets type.  To be a part of something that big though was pretty cool.

Glenn Beck was an afterthought, not knocking him or anything, but I think most people went to send a message and considered it a tea party.  I know I did.  Sat around some great folks too. Funny enough, 2 people from the Springs who were in the military.  The husband served in Iraq.

57 Is the "Republican Party" even still meanful now? I mean, I turned 18 in 1980 and immediately registered Republican to cast my first ever vote...for Ronald Reagan. I have stood faithfully but I've been getting madder and madder as they try to keep foisting McCains on us instead of Palins, DeMints and Pences. Now most people on the right I know are like me, we identify as conservative, not neccessarily Republican.

58 O/T- From Nate Silver- no Senate candidate with a lead of more than 5.5 points in the polling average, with 30 days to go in the race, has lost since 1998: these candidates are 68-0. If this rule actually holds true this cycle, it guarantees a GOP pickup minimum now of 6- AR,ND,IN,PA,WI,CO. It also "guarantees' that NY-B,DE,and CA are now out of reach for Republicans, but that NV,CT,WV,IL,WA are all in play for a shot at 10-11 This rule only goes back to 1998, so the caveat in a wave cycle is that may not be enough to save Boxer, Gillibrand, or even Coons. But going off the RULE, anyone predicting less than +6 in the Senate is using emotions or silliness or brainless eeyoring instead of cold facts.

72 #68 Likely IF, and I mean IF, we see a continuing trend in Connecticut and a Uturn in california polling. The Whitman smear I think backfires hard on brown, and Fiorinas ads are just now hitting the airwaves. There is a compounded effect from an R-leaning race at the top upon down ballot races- the Midwest is all the more bloody BECAUSE of the bloodshed at the top, not in conjunction with it. Colorado's shift to the right in polling bodes well, as does the confirmation that Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Indiana are becoming the event-horizon for Democrats in those states.

76 This election is not like any other since 1861. Joe Sixpack has taken to the streets. When Mom and Pop are out marching carrying signs we have a new paradigm. 79 I think that something some people like Reynolds overlook is that not all the Tea Party are alike. They are not the Borg...for instance when people say that the GOP should not return to their old ways..what exactly does that mean? I don't think it means the same thing to everyone in the Tea Party. Some people think it means you get rid of medicare and medicaid and other people think it means reform or scaling back programs..some people think it means no earmarks at all some people just think it means balancing the budget without actually hurting anyone.

For instance, I hear some people complain about the Democrats and their death panels...while at the same time other people are still complaining about medicare part D. BTW, Part D came in 43% under budget, amazingly enough. I mention this because I think it emblematic of the problems facing the movement..you can not have it both ways. That will be the real challenge.

People can make cracks about the GOP all they want, but when the Democrats took power in 2006 the deficit was $161 billion for the budget year, unemployment was 4.5% and gas was just over $2 a gallon. Far from perfect, but a lot better than what we are looking at right now.

Okay what's the population of DC? You're telling me they couldn't at least get some of those folks out? They probably went for Obama, what, 90-95%?

People from DC all yawn at the political protests regardless of the party. You would think that all the Obamalovers would have slithered down there to side with the commies, I guess no one offered to pay them, give them lunch, and provide "metro/bus money. I can hear it now, "I ain't goin' all the way down to the mall...nobody's paying me like those other workers." That entire rally was union paid. All of it. With maybe a couple of hippie commie oldsters in it for the bong hit.

107 People can make cracks about the GOP all they want, but when the Democrats took power in 2006 the deficit was $161 billion for the budget year, unemployment was 4.5% and gas was just over $2 a gallon. Far from perfect, but a lot better than what we are looking at right now. Posted by: Terrye at October 03, 2010 05:38 PM This is a very important point. I would argue that fiscal conservative GOP-voters who lacked perspective and were too critical of the GOP and Bush prior to the 2006 mid-terms were part of the reason why the Democrats took power in 2006. Fiscal conservatives 'made the perfect the enemy of the good' and ended up giving credence to the Democrats' accusations that Bush's and the GOP's economy was a disaster and American needed to give Democrats the control in order to 'fix' things. Well, they sure did 'fix' the $161 Billion deficit (which had been decreasing the last 3 years under Bush and the GOP), the 4.5% unemployment, the $2 gasoline and the record highs on Wall Street. Fiscal conservatives were upset that they were not getting conservative spending and government from the GOP. That's a valid criticism. However, the economy was basically comparable to the Clinton economy. Yet, the fiscal conservative GOP-voters' criticisms ended up just adding fuel to the fire of the lies of the Democrats and MF-ing media who were calling Bush's and the GOP's economy "the worst economy since Hoover!!!11ty!!" We ended up with Bush and the GOP getting attacked from both sides: lies from the Democrats that the economy was horrible and valid criticisms from fiscal conservatives that government was growing too large and spending was too high. Meanwhile, put in proper perspective, the economy was actually quite good. But, because both sides were ridiculous in their criticisms, people failed to see things in proper perspective. Ironically, many were saying that the reason the GOP lost power in 2006 was because of social conservatives. But, I think it was actually due to fiscal conservatives 'making the perfect the enemy of the good'. Were Bush and the GOP 100% fiscal conservatives? No. But their economy was no worse than we had it under Clinton, which most people - Democrats and Republicans -- point to as a good economy.

113 Soona, I'm with ya.  This weekend the Lt. Dan Weekend in SC hosted 50 wounded warriors and their families.

This will break your heart:  "When we attend events like this, we're surrounded by others who are going through the same thing," Rosie Babin said.  "There's no explanation needed; everyone gets it.  Everyone kind of looks out for each other while we're here.  It's like a big family."

Her son was a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne when he was shot in the stomach in 2003 in Iraq.  He lost his spleen, most of his intestines and 90 percent of his stomach.  A stroke during his recovery left him needing a wheelchair and around-the-clock care.

"It takes days of preparation to travel with someone in a wheelchair...and someone who is paraplegic," she said.  "It's like having a 170-pound newborn, but it's so important that Alan have these relationships and have these goals."

Cannot imagine our only son coming home like that.  Yet, we'd devote what's left of our lives to him.

Posted by: Iblis at October 03, 2010 01:58 PM (9221z)

117 I've been watching the polls for weeks and still have to wonder just how much of this enthusiasm gap is being reflected in them. At least a couple hundred thousand people coming in from all over on their own dime vs. a couple tens of thousands putting on T-shirts, picking up mass-produced signs, and getting there and back for free (or on payroll) is a good start, but these polls just inching our way over the past month, or a Democratic senate candidate here or there picking up a few points all of a sudden, it's just getting kind of nerve-wracking not knowing if these crowd comparisons are going to turn up on 11/2 with a big wave that pushes to and beyond what the polls are currently saying, or if they're already baked into the calculations and likely voter models.

Basically, I've still got people over here saying they look forward to seeing the Tea Party movement get proven to be the small minority fringe that they absolutely, thoroughly believe them to be. They won't even look at the comparison photos, they just dismiss anything that doesn't confirm their preconceptions (that it's all just a kook fringe of yahoos) as lies or propaganda. And I'm standing next to them not saying anything, but needing an electoral blowout to shove in their faces, and shove it in hard. 60+ House seats and 11-12 Senate seats, or better. I want them having as few avenues of "Well at least we didn't lose _______, we still rock!" self-delusion as possible.

If it was that make "scan required" worm if you didn't stop it before it started "scanning" it is likely too late. You can try Malwarebytes to see if it will remove it but most likely you will have to reformat the hard drive and reload from scratch.

146 I'm not sure of anyone mentioned this, but it has to do with the rally.

Also, I think Beck made if very clear that he wanted no signs and that everyone was to remain peaceful.   He also made it clear that there would be lots and lots of security, some of whom you wouldn't realize were security.  People felt they could attend.

I'm not so sure you wanted to attend this rally as you knew who was going to be there and you were fearful of trouble.  At least this is the excuse being given by the BO supporters who didn't go or get on the free buses.

Also, people don't want to attend the Stewart/Colbert rallies as they think there will be all kinds of problems there as the purpose of said rallies has not been clearly identified.

Was surprised to see on drudge that the prez opted out of the rally too and went to camp david.

Ace, I understand your scepticism about the Tea Party in the beginning, but not getting it after 9/12 last year is no excuse.   Have you ever seen that many non-leftists in a march, ever?    That should have made everyone sit up & take notice.   To think those people would take the time to do that and then, what?   Go home, sit down & shut up?   Not very bloody likely.

I know what I feel about what I've been seeing in the country, and after that march last year, I realized I wasn't alone.   That, in and of itself, is part of what is motivating me to crawl to the polls, if I have to.

Millions of people are awake, disgusted, and motivated like I've never seen.   And, I'm not a young 'un.   That feeling has not subsided one bit in the last yr & a half.   It has only grown stronger.   Most of us understand that this election will not be the last time we have to stand up.   As soon as we kick ass on 11/2, we have to begin the quest for control of the WH n '12.

We refuse the let this commie/socialist crap continue to breed.

163 I hope everyone including Reynolds understands that this is first and foremost going to be a two to three election dealio. It will take till 2012 to finally kill Obamacare assuming the Rep candidate wins. And we dump as many RINOs as possible as well as more Dims. Unless we take 2/3 of both the House and The Senate. Then the Preznit's veto means nothing. Don't believe that will happen though. How the Republicans can show good faith is 1) to defund/delay/repeal/eliminate any and all of the Obama's crapola. No compromises. Just kill the programs as dead as humanly possible. 2) Eliminate any agencies or laws standing in the way of nuclear, clean coal, natural gas, hydroelectric power. For us to have good jobs, good lives, and be competitive globally we've got to have cheap, plentiful power. And we've got to have it now. 3) go tong and hammer after voter fraud with jail terms. We've got to break the criminal power structure that makes a mockery of our elections in so many parts of the country. Hello Illinois!!! The R's do that. I'm a happy guy until 2012.

172 It's too bad that Beck or somebody didn't throw a protest rally at a high school at the same time. Yeah, I know... our side is too classy to do it. But it would have been funny to watch it dwarf this one.

My favorite parts ('favorite', as it "making me scream at the TV):

 - The media spin about the "diversity of the crowd" and how it was a "picture of America". Really? So minorities are now the majority? America is made up entirely of color coded minions that are dependent on someone else to tell them what to do, where to go, what to wear, and pay for a ride, meals, and hotel accommodations for it? Blatant Communist groups now speak for a significant percentage of the population? It's good form to leave places looking like a garbage dump after standing on your soapbox about protecting the environment? Huh... if that's really a "picture of America", I want to move.

- The "We'd been planning this since WAAAAY before Beck's rally. This rally has nothing to do with being a response to his." meme. Uh huh. Funny how Ed Schulz only seemed to find out immediately after Beck's rally and no one heard of it before then.

No one is going to say no, no one.  It's impolite to say no.  It's like when you have the crazy black sheep in the family and everyone whispers about them but when one of the neighbors gets in your dads face about them your dad defends them because "damn it, he/she may be a black sheep but he's our black sheep and so and so isn't going to say something about them to me and get away with it"....

198 "...but it turns out, the Tea Party is the dog, and the GOP merely the tail." Ace, this is why I think the "Pledge" is a bit of a mistake. Voters are not in the mood to hear from politicians, they want politicians to hear from them in November. I also don't think they particularly want the GOP saying "here is what we're going to do." They want to give the politicians their marching orders, thankyouverymuch. I don't think it is a major mistake, but I think the GOP needs to step back a little and let this wave happen (while encouraging it where they can and supporting the hell out of the lumberjack and other candidates). But the bottom line is that people are pissed at both parties. That is why GOP goals and Tea Party goals don't have complete overlap (i.e. Castle). The Dems are going to face a wipe-out, but the GOP are getting their pee-pees slapped a bit too. It is interesting because we have seen this before on a smaller scale with Clinton. Clinton tried to do some of the things Obama did, and there was a backlash which swept Republicans into Congress and the Governor's mansions. I think the most important part of 1994 was the governors, who balanced a lot of stage budgets. The congress locked things up and Clinton ran back to the middle. The economy picked up, Clinton chased porky interns and governed by polls. The weird thing here is it doesn't seem likely Obama will pivot and move toward the center. And it is unlikely the "TeaOP" can fix all his damage in two years, but he'll take credit for whatever they can do. Will it be enough for him in 2012? He seems like the most vulnerable incumbent I can remember, but the GOP might still come up with a terrible nominee.

199 Posted by: Clyde Shelton at October 03, 2010 05:55 PM (NITzp)

Clyde, I think there were several reasons the Republicans lost...for one thing the incessant attacks from both sides just wore everyone out. I can remember Malkin putting Spike Lee to shame when it came to blaming Bush for Katrina for Chrisake.

Now everyone blames the other guy. The paleos blame the neo cons, the fiscal cons blame the social cons..in fact when you think about Beck..he uses religion to get people fired up. That is one reason I have trouble trusting the guy. Don't get me wrong, I like to see him go after Obama, but at the same time I have to admit I have had some reservations about Beck every since he said we were better off with Obama than with McCain. We are not, by a long shot. The debt alone makes that plain.

I just think that people got tired of it all and wanted something new and different and instead they got stuck with the same tired Democrat crap...and people want to go back..they want to go back to a time when they felt comfortable in their own country. All of this hope and change is freaking them out.

However, that does not mean the whole country has turned into a bunch of libertarians. I think it would be a mistake to think it did.

One thing I've advised people in a bloodletting sort of mood is to bear in mind how quickly this all happened, and how enormous it is. And I say that as a way of suggesting, "Allow those who didn't quite get it a little leeway in catching up with the new normal."

No, no, no, no, no.  These folks who "didn't quite get it" are exactly the people who aided and abetted the Democrats in bringing about the current state of affairs.  For years, the working philosophy of these Republicans has been "Enforce our low-tax, small government principles by giving the Democrats one-third of whatever they ask for".  I have no doubt that, if the pressure is reduced, they will return to their philosophy of relaxed accommodation.  Enough.

The "machine" in DC is going to do everything in their power to co-opt the new class of Republican freshmen.  They had better not fall into the trappings of power, from the inside of the party or the outside.  The GOP really has no idea how short of a leash the electorate is going to give them.

I can see tea parties next spring too.

AytchMan:

You see this is where I disagree. When those old folks show up at those townhalls and start screaming "leave my medicare alone" they are not pissed that someone is giving them some entitlement..they are pissed off that someone is taking something away from them to give it to someone else who probably does not want or need it.

You can that for years the "working philosophy of these Republicans" has been to give Democrats one third of whatever they asked for...but you forget that the American people voted for those Democrats and put them in control of the White House and the Congress..No doubt they have thought better of it and want to get rid of a lot of those people, but that does not mean that they are all behind some libertarian purge of the program.

I think they would be happy with a return to a few years ago at this point. I do think the American people are more receptive to reform of the entitlement programs than they were when Bush tried to reform social security in 2005, but if Republicans go too far the other way those Independents can turn on them too.Don't think they won't.

Maybe people want honest competent government that does not regulate or tax them into poverty. They may not all agree on the way to get there.

I don't think the lamestream media or the dems or the gop realises that many millions of people who are independent minded now have the internet to find out information, rediscover the founding principles of this country, the sacrifices made by 56 signers of a piece of a paper as well as thousands upons thousands who gave up their lives so that future generations may live in prosperity and peace.

and longer they don't realise they are just temporary holders of an office, they are not kings and queens, they are supposed to represent their voters, not themselves or there marxist/socialist party, the backlash is only growing, and it is not abating after the november elections.

and the Tea Party movement is not anti-govt, it is anti-BIG-govt.

and frankly there are mainly 2 things that bind everyone in the movement, fiscal responsibility, and adherance to the founding father's principles outlined in the US Constitution.

Anyone who doesn't adhere to this, dems or repubs, are part of the problem.

207 It dawns on me that there should be some Photoshop-savvy morons in the studio audience.  Could anyone take some of the still shots from today and, maybe, change the messages and post or link?

I'd do it, but my Photoshoppe skills appear to be primarily spelling it correctly, sometimes...

208 Well isn't this something. Been lurking this site for years, think I actually read the original Korean store post. So many new names and so much passion. Yes on the new feeling and belief that the Tea Party MUST bring to Repub land. Yes that it must be a melding. R registered all my adult life. Yes old enough to actually know what a John B was. Yes old enough to remember LBJ and Moyer running those atom bomb ads. To all morons and moronettes out there, get over the RINO type casting. They respond to their constituents. DUH. We make their constituents change, they better. DUH. But that puts the load on us. Push the change. Nothing better than putting the "progressive" tag up their .....places. I love this site. You folks are incredible to finally get me to post. Howard the Duck

209 Terrrye is making an unprecidentend amount for this site. What happened to homeric poems on LauraW"s hump. "I was Tea Party when Tea Party wasn't cool." Went to one of the first public gatherings, when there wasn't even a name yet. 18 months, two years ago. Just normal folks, expressing themselves. Some goof signs, some on point. Living in a "blue, navy blue, I'm so blue. etc/ state/ Good luck all you out there in "it might make a difference land."

211 Terrye #207 --

It would take an enormously long post to fully explain my position.  Suffice to say, I take a very long view with regard to American politics.  There is a disease in all advanced democracies that results in an irreversible, if erratic, drift to the left.  This process occurs over generations and has been in motion in the US since FDR at the latest.  It can be summarized as "the squeaky, activist wheel gets the grease".

Moderate Republicans have rarely attempted to reverse this trend and have never succeeded.  They win the occasional counter-attack, never the war.  Thus, I see no hope for any sort of moderate response or compromise from the fiscally-conservative Right -- an amorphous group not to be confused with the Republicans of recent decades.

At this juncture, I see the only responsible strategy as follows:  formalize our philosophy of government, fight the good fight, accept our tour in the wilderness and rescue the country when it sobers up. Then, we'll have the transformative mandate.  The main body of the Republican party will never accept this, of course, But moderation and compromise will only result in More Of The Same.

I always thought the fear many had - that an official Tea Party party would form - didn't really make any sense. There's a "Conservative Party", isn't there? And a bunch of other minor parties (like the Socialist one Obama ran on back in IL, while he was also on the Dem ticket).

The question is, "Does it have staying power?" Well, I've been around a long time, and I've never seen anything like it. Further, it is a response to an unimaginably huge govt-made mess, which ain't going anywhere soon. The Tea Party is really our only hope to avoid the kind of riots they're starting to have in Europe.

Take heart! Here in NYS (New f-ing York!!) a gubenatorial candiate with no name recognition is doing remarkably well, his campaign posters exclaiming, "I'm mad, too, Carl!" People aren't going to stop being mad.

And let's remember that - not so long ago - we learned that there are actual Americans still living in Massachusetts, of all places! Who knew!?!

As fans of Soccer, you should get fully prepared at first. For example, you would better prepare a suitable pair of soccer cleats , a set of soccer jerseys or whatever. Otherwise, you will not enjoy an exciting football match. Anyway, it is necessary and essential to prepare for the football match in a good way.(yang)
