Now, a graphical depiction of where they stand for reelection compared to their current bloc on the map per RCP:

A Demplosion wipes out all but 6 Â“safeÂ” blue dogs per RCP, but I think Cuellar in Texas' 28th is vulnerable, as Democrats in the neighboring districts 23, 25, and 15 have become.

In even the worst scenario, the Â“lucky 5Â” are:
Schift in CA-29
David Scott in GA-13
Harman in CA-36
Baca in CA-43
Thompson in CA-1

The Democrats loved mocking President Bush with his 30+ member "coalition of the willing." How effective does a coalition of four Californians and some guy in Atlanta sound?
Better yet...if you live in these 5 districts, care to remind them it's "too late to loose the weight they used to need to throw around?"

3 Some of this is intentional stupidity by the Dem caucus...

Charlie Melancon of LA-3 was "nudged" to challenge Sen. David Vitter in part because he was part of the Blue Dog leadership making life miserable for Pelosi.

4 The Blue Dogs only had power to the extent that they were willing to stand up to the more liberal Democrats and vote with the Republicans on certain issues. This crop of Blue Dogs hasn't done that, so they can't claim to be a counterbalance to the excesses of Pelosi and the Progressives. And that means their constituents have to go Republican to get that counterbalance.

5 Blue Dogs have been a myth of Greek proportions for a long time. You're more likely to find a ten-leaved clover than a true-blue "conservative" Blue Dog.

7 Ross (AR-4) is a Blue Dog and he's also safe. He's running against a woman who has never run for office before and, as far as I can tell (I live in that district), has not campaigned or advertised.

I am in the CA-1 district. Mike Thompson is about as 'Blue Dog' as Nancy Pelosi. What utter bullshit a Blue Dog caucus is.

34 If Adam Schiff (D-CA 29) is a Blue Dog, then I have proof positive that there's no such thing as a moderate Democrat. I live in his district, and can couch for his street cred as a reliable lefty.

On the other hand, safe? If the army of yard signs favoring his opponent, John Colbert, are any indication, Schiff is facing his first real challenge in a long time. Colbert's signs outnumber Schiff's by a margin of four-to-one on my daily commute.

57 @Otis: the cynical view: Prop 27 lets the state legislature do the gerrymandering directly; Prop. 20 does the gerrymandering through a commission. No one's talking about who appoints the commission members. Since the CA legislature is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Democrat party, I'm going Yes on 20, No on 27.

62 I think David Scott (GA13) is in deep shit. For the past 6 years I have driven thru the northen part of his district to and from my office on a weekly basis. In 06 and 08 yard signs for him were EVERYWHERE. The distance I drive thru that district is about 12 miles in length, from the Paulding-Cobb county line into Marietta/Smyrna.

Now? NOT A SINGLE ONE and all you see is signs supporting Mike Crane, his Republican challenger. There were a few David Scott signs back around mid-July, and when I say a few I mean less than 5, but they have disappeared.

Mike Crane can win. He needs the support!

Logically, assuming there's an advantage to a representative being in line with his district, the Blue Dogs got elected in an anti-GOP trend when their districts would in a more normal year been slightly GOP or swing---a perfect description of 2006 and 2008.

So, in a big GOP year, they would figure to be in trouble... and in a REALLY big GOP or an anti-incumbent year, they would be in BIG trouble.

So this is kind of 'dog bites man,' tho interesting to see the maps.
