Signs of the depression -- vanishing blacktop roads
— Purple Avenger

Rather than repaving, many localities are opting to rip up the blacktop and return to a simpler, cheaper, more eco-friendly approach...the traditional dirt road.

...Paved roads, historical emblems of American achievement, are being torn up across rural America and replaced with gravel or other rough surfaces as counties struggle with tight budgets and dwindling state and federal revenue. State money for local roads was cut in many places amid budget shortfalls...
Its all part of the Ogabe junta's master plan to punish America and reduce the lifestyle gap between us and the 3rd world.

15 This is interesting. The roads in my community now look like they've been carpet bombed, and there's been little or no attempt made to remedy the situation. Up until two years ago, there were resurfacing projects every summer. The deterioration of our infrastructure probably is a very good indicator of just how bad things are getting.

What I find amusing is that most democrats I know wouldn't be caught dead in a GM or Chrysler product.

55 44. That's exactly right. They're redoing a part of 30 Bypass here in Exton that was just repaved two years ago as part of the "stimulus." They want to turn 162 thru a little town called Marshallton into a two-abreast highway and take out the speed humps AGAINST THE WILL OF THE TOWNSPEOPLE - again, part of the federal stimulus. And yet the streets in West Chester PA are going to gravel the hard way - they are degrading worse every year til the potholes touch each other.

And, in another year or so, all we'll be able to afford is walking, for which paved roads are unnecessary.

67

Well, my state once again is ahead of that curve.  In Iowa, they don't pave the roads to begin with!

GM could have filmed an SRX commercial while I was out delivering yard signs in May. Honest to dog, some of the gravel roads I'm aware of since I either bicycle or walk the dog across them.  What was not grasped was the fact the these roads go on forever.  So, I'm thinking in a couple of cases that some left-wing loser signed on for yard signs just to waste our time.  But no, I'd arrive dusty and apprehensive at a new construction on a small acreage.  Honest Republicans would greet me wondering what took so long.  One road was a single track in a condition that kept my lead foot idling along between five and ten MPH to avoid scraping off the under-pinnings.  Around the bend after about three miles, there's a very large metal building with a couple of bobtails parked in front adjacent to a very small bungalow with a neatly mowed lawn.  And, yes, bibs and all he's waiting for his yard sign.

Some of my friends were concerned that I was out in rural areas by myself.  I suspect the Cadillac, Gucci's and golf visor were every bit as alarming to the aggressively working class folks in this county as their isolation might be to me.

It is indeed a great country.

From the article:

"In this country, HIV clearly strikes the economically disadvantaged in a devastating way," said CDC HIV/AIDS expert Kevin Fenton, whose findings were presented at an international conference on AIDS in Vienna.

Very interesting.  I had no idea that HIV even understood socio-economic issues, let alone had it out for poor people.  I think Mr. Fenton meant to say that the "economically disadvantaged" (not sure what subgroup of poor people he meant, but I'd lay odds it had color in it) tend to be more irresponsible and reckless than the rest of the population.

But ... blaming HIV is an interesting take on it.  At least we are given warning when our credit scores are pulled by HIV.

As long as you keep a pickup truck you will not have any problems. You will not have problems with most cars either but a nice car covered in mud is so ugly whereas a pickup truck it doesn't bother the aesthetics at all.

The biggest problem with dirt roads in the old days was the dust that would get in your house with the windows open. Now with A/C not a problem.

97 Something else that irks me about this that you never hear about is the actual money that is supposed to be dedicated to road and bridge maintenance.

75% of the price of gasoline is taxes. Taxes that are supposed to be DEDICATED to road/bridge maintenance. Yet every year all those funds are diverted to the socialist programs and bureaucrat salaries and then the SOBs complain about declining infrastructure and demand higher taxes.

Folks, the only way this is ever going to stop is to get the socialists and communists out of government. The only way that is going to happen is get back to the days when you couldn't vote unless you paid taxes to begin with. Since that will take a Constitutional amendment to remove a past mistake it will not happen.

From the article:

Rebuilding an asphalt road today is particularly expensive because the price of asphalt cement, a petroleum-based material mixed with rocks to make asphalt, has more than doubled over the past 10 years.

If The Vapid One© and his partners in crime weren't so busy destroying the private sector, we'd have low prices for petroleum products.

The solution is simple. We can have abundance and low prices once we rid ourselves of the current crop of corruptocrats.

Not before.

Years ago when the county was feeling flush they assured us that in the end, paved roads were cheaper to maintain than dirt (which require regular grading).  They used that line to justify paving a bunch of roads that had low traffic (a little farm and residential) and perfectly serviceable gravel.  Now I guess the economics have suddenly changed.  Hmm....

So in urban areas, stimulus money is being spent on repaving roads that don't need to be repaved but in rural areas, roads are allowed to go to shit.

127 I don't see a problem with this, quite frankly.

I lived in for years at the end of 10 miles of gravel road in northwest North Dakota. Gravel road surfaces there were actually were "smoother" to drive on then the paved roads in most cases. The paved roads would buckle in places from frost heaves and start to break down, leaving them lumpy, rutted with potholes.

I had no problems driving them in all kinds of weather with a Honda Civic, either. The only time I could not get through and had to turn around was when the creek flooded-I couln't get across the bridge because it had huge chunks of ice on it. I just took a 20 mile detour and eventually made it back home. It was no biggie.

The Mahinda's drive all over India. Available next year.

Late 90s Dodge Ram. Cheap. Parts are cheap and they are exceptionally tough in tough environments. All of ours have in excess of 180,000 miles.
If you're worried about fuel costs, a small truck gets marginally more mileage and cost thousands more. How much fuel can you buy for $10,000?

He explained that it would be much better in the long run than what he would suffer if he went "downtown" again. I think he made his point. Transportation justice, bitches!

Someone needs to remind Ray Lahood bicycles in cities/towns where everything is less than 10 miles apart (roughly 15minutes to 1/2 hour ride) = good idea for cutting down on road wear, parking issues, and traffic congestion, bicycles in rural areas where it is 50-100 miles to the next sizable town = bad idea. 650Bx38mm to 50mm bicycle tires (the kind no dumbass hipster would ever use) don't require paving for a smooth ride. You know damn well when people can no longer afford to drive all kinds of licensing and taxes will be applied to bicycles.

Dirt roads are very difficult to maintain, requiring regular grading and regraveling to maintain any kind of safe travelling surface.

They also, in the process of becoming ridged and rutted, contribute to silt runoff, which we are supposed to avoid like the plague, right?

Lots of rururban types with city jobs LOVE them, for two major reasons:  it discourages anyone else from trying to follow their ecohypocritical lead in pretending to be "farmers" in the country, while paying for it with an urban job via a long commute (often by SUV--NEED it for those dirt roads and towing the horse trailer on weekends), and it is much much better for the horse's hooves--not quite so many trips to the farrier each year.
