Slideshow: Last "Combat" Troops Leaving Iraq For Kuwait
— Ace

Well done, boys!

(I put "combat" in quotes not because these guys aren't combat but because I'm less than convinced those left behind are not. I do not think the 50,000 troops left behind are purely non-combat, even subtracting the Special Forces operators.

But this is the main force of our combat troops, I suppose.

Politics aside: I am glad they're coming home.

I saw in another article a guy said he wasn't doing this for a victory parade, and I believe him; but I hope he'll understand that maybe a victory parade is necessary for the civilians, then, just to give us a chance to say thanks.

And Obama had better get on a victory parade.)

If those soldiers have a parade in NYC, they better not have any guns with them.  Guns are dangerous.

Victory parade? Just whose victory are you referring to?

4 Good job, guys.  Back to the old freezorinos.

5 "Freezorinos" means home, right?  Or does that mean those freezy things space travelers sleep in?

6 Doubt there will be a parade. At lunch yesterday our waitress is the proud mama of a young man over there, and he is returning home on Wednesday. Pretty much a straight shot home.

A parade for these fine young men and women would mean that Bambi would have to cut his Ramadan vacation short.

7 My youngest brother left yesterday for his second tour in Iraq.  This is expected to be a 12 month deployment.  Offensive operations may have ceased, but they are under no illusions that combat has ended.

8 You're exactly right, Ace, that a victory parade is needed so the civilians can say thanks. No doubt there are plenty like me who'd like the chance.

I've always been slightly annoyed by that 'Marines went to war, America went to the mall' dig. Lots of organizations have sprung up to support the deployed soldiers, and lots of bloggers have spread the word about them ;-) and lots of money was given by us here at home. What I'd like is a chance to show that support in person.

I doubt we'll see a parade down Constitution Avenue in DC though. Another reason to miss W.

9 @7. Ditto. My own baby brother has just activated for his third deployment to Iraq. But I totally agree with a victory parade and all the kudos that our troops deserve. They've done what most believed impossible.

Would a victory parade be nice? Yes.  I don't want to see one take place though.

You know that if a victory parade was in the offing that every moonbat, Code Pink, antiamerican, military hating, whackadoodledoo would be out in force (probably with a nice mix of hadjis as well)...I really don't want to see our troops have to deal with it.  Better to just buy a vet a beer or a burger and thank them personally or through a group like Soldier's Angels, or something like that.

Until our society changes back to its old form, there will be no victory parades for our troops.

17 Thank You.

Too often, after telling them thanks for serving, a vet will say "the only heroes are the dead." I've heard it a lot. Sometimes, I respond by respectfully disagreeing. The service members themselves, (whatever function they perform and whatever medals end up pinned on their chests), the wives, sons, daughters, parents, extended family and friends not only of those who have lost their lives but of those in harms way are heroes. No disrespect, but the dead ain't dealing with shit no more, and yes, that is called the ultimate sacrifice, but those living on sacrifice something too, don't they? Unfortunately, some survivors have PTSD and survivor's syndrome pretty bad. I don't know the term for what people go through when they lose a loved one to combat. But they have to carry on.

I hope I haven't come off belittling anyone here. My writing ain't so good.

I am trying to extend a sincere thank You from me and my family to all of those who serve/served and are reading my comment. I also sincerely thank those of you who worried about loved ones in harm's way. You're heroes. Believe that.

18 Hey, Denny, the first time you successfully decide between the McNuggets and the Quarter Pounder without second guessing your decision so much that you finally don't end up in the corner of your local McDonald's crying and pulling your hair out in fearful agony, let mommy know. She'll be so proud of you! Until then, leave the decisions to the adults. Politics makes strange bedfellows (for example, allying with Iraq in the first fucking place) and contingency planning in today's geopolitical Rubik's cube is fucking impossible. When face with "damned if you do, damned if you don't" Americans always do. Criticizing that approach is laughable, Denny Crane.

Posted by: Suck my asshole, Denny Crane at August 20, 2010 02:44 PM (Epj2t)

19 Thanks for linking to that.

Oh, yeah, and regarding the "non-combat" troops left, they're advise and assist, so they switch to combat troops if needed, which, unfortunately, seems kind of imminent, and makes it seem like a way to word it "just so" for the jugears base. Still, glad to see some of ours coming home.

20 Posted by: Thank You at August 20, 2010 06:30 PM (Epj2t I could go on a very long diatribe on how we whom served/serve are not heroes; just trained professionals who answered a call. How the true heroes are people you will never meet. Susan Porcello is a hero for caring when no one else did: http://tinyurl.com/2dkba86 Alexandra Scott is a hero for staring death in the face, which no child should have to do, and fought back: http://tinyurl.com/26f2qpq Mr. and Mrs. Lierow are heroes for taking in a child whom many would consider beyond hope: http://tinyurl.com/5onzkw They are the true heroes. 26 Good point, coach. Like I said, I don't write so good, and I can see that. I ain't a hero either. I see what you're saying and agree with it. The concept is there, no? You know part of what I think and feel, right? And it takes balls to take the oath, so we've got that going for us. Perhaps hero is a bit strong, I could STFI for a better word and lay it out from the superlative down to people with balls and just plain beautiful patriotism. Hope I didn't offend you. And thanks just the same, coach.

Isn't that swell.  How could this possibly go wrong?    The EPA and the enviros must be jizzing in their pants.

I scanned the .pdf this executive Order is based upon

This Order appears to only screw Americans on or near the Coasts and Great Lakes.

This does not appear to be the massive ecological land-grab I read about that added the words in italics "Navigable and Non-Navigable Waterways" to an existing Document, which would essentially give the Government full "wetland" authority over every single creek and stream in America.

I'm sure they will get to that one soon.....

and it's preseason NFL.

Here's an idea:

Have elements from the returning combat forces do some sort of opening for the first NFL regular season game at each of the game locations.  Unfurl a flag, do a salute, bask in the applause.  Then let them get a beer and watch a game.

37  If a parade should happen, yeah, it should happen after that part of the operation is wrapped up as well.  Maybe by then the troops won't have to worry about the moonbats quite so much.

Doesn't seem right to have a "victory" parade when we still have troops out in the field...in fact, most of these troops that are coming home will be deployed again most likely.

The 3rd Infantry Division (Mech) from Fort Stewart, GA is still in Iraq.  And I don't think they're just a bunch of doughnut dollies.  They're experienced combat troops, and their division holds the only Presidential Unit Citation (almost like a group Medal of Honor) I've heard about being awarded for action in the Iraq conflict (from 2003).

As far as a victory parade, I remember back at Fort Huachuca, Arizona in '91, I was there for a school, and the MI school guys and Signal Brigade guys that had served in Desert Shield/Storm were honored with a parade in their honor on Independence Day.  They were so honored they had leaves & passes cancelled during the holiday period so they could march in the parade in their honor.  I, fortunately, was only there TDY for a school, so although I also had my trip to DS/DS, I wasn't so honored and could stay in bed.  Yaaay parades!

Sometimes Parades aren't a good thing.

51 I wonder if Beck will invite the troops to his 8/28 thingy on his dime.  That would be nice and so correct.

Yesterday morning heard a snippet of Beck's radio show.  He said that o'really asked him how many people he expected and Beck said he didn't know.  o'really said "you should get around twenty thousand"...Beck in relaying this seemed like twenty thousand would be a disappointment.   Apparently o'really is so sure of this he told Beck if he gets more than twenty thousand he can have the 8 o'clock time slot.  I feel bad for Beck, don't care for o'really but he must know something to bet his show in front of witnesses.  I think Beck will be very upset with just twenty thousand, very upset.

60 i shouldn't say this because it's mean: a parade is an asinine idea. well intentioned but a non-sequitar of sorts. i may sound like a lib here, but how about everybody send $100 to rehab the wounded. or something. our victory is manifest, was mission accomplished after the war phase and now after the saddamist/al qaeda insurrectionist phase. the final victory (ie anything resembling a fairly stabile & civil society) will come along in the next 5-10 years with our continuing commitment. hurray for us, the us, our professional military & valiant men & women in arms.

No worries!  I thought he said 15,000, but whatevs.  O'Really is delusional.  Just last week Beck found out that there were 20,000 registered just from Pittsburgh alone!  There are no buses to be had in the Richmond, VA, area.  I believe the Richmond Tea Party is sending 15.  Someone from every state in the union has so far called to say they're attending.  Did you hear the lady from Hawaii last week?  She said it was weird how everything (including airline prices) fell in line for her.  You can't get a hotel room in DC.  I have friends coming from Michigan who are staying in Maryland hotels.

Beck will get a few hundred thousand, but O'Really won't give up that 8 p.m. slot, even though Beck could put it to far greater use.

78 You know all the Hoop-la, about the troops leaving Iraq?.. Every news account says, there are still between 50,000 to 56,000 troops left, right?

Did anyone ever stop to consider, how many troops actually left?

It took some digging, but I finally came up with THIS:

The brigade's leadership volunteered to have half of its 4,000 soldiers depart overland instead of taking the traditional flight out, a decision that allowed the unit to keep 360 Strykers in the country for an extra three weeks. The remainder of the brigade flew out with the last of the troops slated to leave later Thursday.

My calculator says:

If we use the low number (50,000)..

Of the total, something like 13% of the troops in Iraq, actually left.

If we use the high number (56,000)

Of the total, something like 12% of the troops in Iraq, actually left.

Funny,

our "Professional Journalists" never mention that,

isn't it.

82 ... but it's true, or at least worthy of consideration. i don't see anybody out there discussing the length of commitment to come.

83 ... remember clinton saying kosovo would be 1 year and absolutely no one thought that worth a snort it was so obviously a junk statement and electoral sop to "the short-sighted american populace".

85 Hoping we left a myriad of 21st century, best the USA can make tunnels stocked to the gills, accessible through whathisname's palaces and maybe even a couple of shacks that look totally benign. Say, 500 Abrams, 200 Strykers, and 20,000 of the baddest motherfuckers we've got ready to resurface the second some scumbag terrorist so much as farts violently in a Piggly Wiggly in the name of struggle. What the fuck, while I'm at it, how about a tunnel connecting to the whole complex to Jerusalem?

87 ... & our making a long term commitment to iraq better serves us than that backwater called kosovo. i guess that's a policy statement. iraq does matter and a long-term commitment may very well bear real fruit. but that's the neo-con in me. & non-political person. human being. sitting in my neo-con armchair. p[lotting world realpolitik designs on the world. *& don't touch my periods, or my ampersands*

92 #51, 3rd ID (Mech) and 1st Marine Division both earned Presidential Unit Citations on the drive to Baghdad. The PUC is supposed to be equivalent to a group award of the Distinguished Service Cross (or Navy Cross for the Marines).

My division, the 101st, didn't get one, since we were doing little things like clearing all the towns along the highway that 3rd ID drove around. My old battalion (3/502 Inf) earned the Valorous Unit Citation in Karbala clearing the Fedayeen off 3rd ID's resupply route. The VUC is considered equivalent to a group award of the Silver Star.

Units in Iraq include 1st ID, 3rd ID; 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division; 1st and 2nd Brigades of the 10th Mountain Division, a brigade and the HQ of the 1st Armored Division, and various aviators, medics, and SOF types. I thin 25th ID still has at least one Stryker brigade there too.

94 And Obama had better get on a victory parade. Oh, he's far too modest to throw himself a victory parade. But he would certainly be honored if the media were to arrange one...

103 ""In a way, I'm not sure a victory parade is right.  Yes I know Iraqi Freedom is technically over, but Enduring Freedom is still violently active and the two wars are entwined by commonalities.  It does not feel like when WWI or WWII was over.  I just don't know on this.""

I somewhat feel the same way. I think the main problem is WWII had a pretty definite end. The enemy countries were in ruins, some of their leaders were dead, we kicked them the fuck out of the countries they invaded, and we hauled japan onto a battleship to surrender.

In the war thats going on now, to get anything along those lines would be-

Mecca...smoldering ruins
iran..smoldering ruins
imadickinajar...dead
leaders of hamas...dead
Iran's religious leaders....in chains/dead
muslim brotherhood...hunted down like nazi war criminals/dead
etc etc etc

In reality, we haven't destroyed enough enemy strongholds, killed enough high profile targets, including leaders of enemy countries. We haven't sent islam to the dustbin like we did the nazi ideology. Basically, we just haven't fucked enough shit up and made them cry uncle.

104 Oh, hell, I was just trying to keep up the tradition. The 101st takes that sort of thing seriously. Gomm, when was your dad with the Division?

I had a great time over there in '03-'04. '05-'06, that one was rough. Lots of IEDs and we were getting our asses kicked. As much as I disagree with a lot of what Thomas Ricks writes, he got it right in The Gamble. I missed out on the '07-'08 tour on account of surgery, and then I got out in '09.

There's a lot of guys finishing the job we began. This war isn't over by a long shot. Five years ago I was predicting we would have invaded Saudi by now.

Parade?  Parade?  Are you kidding?

Obama couldn't even bring himself to MENTION the homecoming troops on Thursday as he jumped on the plane for his latest  his vacation.  Obama took  time to take the Republicans to task about jobs, but he took not a moment to even give a  quick "welcome home" shout-out to our brave men and women.

He didn't even mention the troops the next day when he made his recess appointments.  They simply are not a priority for The Won.

What a clusterfark of a C-in-C.
