— Gabriel Malor Continuing the Obama Administration's frontal assault on John Boehner is Bob Schieffer on this morning's "Face the Nation":
Schieffer: “Mr. Boehner, I'm going to ask you this question because I'm not objective about this - I'm a cancer survivor, I used to be a heavy smoker. Do you still smoke?”Boehner: “I do.”
Schieffer: “You have taken $340,000 from the tobacco industry. They've been the largest contributor to your political campaigns over the year. How do you square that with the fact that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in this country, 435,000 people, their deaths are linked to cancer, that's 1 in 5. How do you justify that in your own mind?”
Boehner: “Bob, tobacco is a legal product in America. The American people have a right to decide for themselves whether they want to partake or not. There are lots of things that we deal with and come in contact with every day, from alcohol to food to cigarettes, a lot of the things that aren't good for our health. But the American people ought to have the right to make those decisions on their own.” …
Schieffer: “If you should become Speaker, you could set a good example for the country by saying, 'I'm going to stop smoking.'
You know who the highest-profile smoker in the country is, right? And who repeatedly lies about it too? Yeah, it's the President.
But this is a stupid issue anyway. We've got an economy in the drink and there's a war on. Suddenly, the MFM just wants to talk about John Boehner's smoking habit.

ya know, I almost feel sorry for people like Schieffer, almost.
most people who used to hate repubs have now finally had their eyes opened when the MSM went from bias to pure propoganda in 2008. The trust in them is completely gone, and the MSM hasn't figured that out yet.

So much so that my lib/dem friend said "well yeah, if you take away the internet saying that then the ME wouldn't even know about the book burning threats then you might suppress that but we'd all be stuck getting all our information from you dimwits"

but man, today, on Fox, the panel didn't think twice about blaming everything on the internet.
************************************
Not so.
IIRC Mara Liasson of NPR made that claim, and made it badly, saying that everything on the Internet has the same credibility. THEN she used the term "viral", which undercut her entire argument; only some Internet blogs and posts achieve that status. SHE, not "the panel" blamed the Internet.
Hume mentioned the Internet too, but HE blamed the media for whipping up the controversy involving a "penny-ante preacher". The Internet was just a vehicle to publicize the issue.

Gabe, apologies for the O/T but there's no open thread today.
I took some time to catch up on this blog's DE senate posts. Unlike most of the chattering class who has gathered here to discuss Tuesday's primary, I have a dog in this fight - DE resident since the late 1990s. The lack of knowledge demonstrated by the non-Delawareans is mind-boggling. For instance, a SC based poster was certain an anti-O'Donnel comment was lifted from "therealmcdonnel.com". Which the gentleman assured us, was bought and paid for by the Castle campaign. That website doesn't exist, and whoever mcdonnel is, he's not running against Castle.
There have been dire warnings about the RINO switching to the Dem party after winning election. Castle has no record of such behavior, unlike neighboring Arlen Specter, whose ascent in national politics was the result of a switch - from Democrat to Republican.
There were some astute observations made, e.g. in the unlikely event O'Donnell makes it to the Senate, she will need to tack left because that's just what happens in D.C. It looks like that's already happening, she's walking back from her socon creds:
After Wednesday's speech, she insisted that social issues like promiscuity are not on her radar screen if she gets elected to Washington.
"That has nothing to do with this campaign!" O'Donnell said, sounding exasperated, adding: "Well, I'm a social conservative that's obvious, but none of this is relevant to the campaign."
source: Philadelphia Inquirer, Sep 10 online edition
I was going to sit the election out, because I find both candidates lacking. But the Palin/Hannity/Limbaugh endorsement has changed my mind. I'm voting for Castle, Delaware can't be forevermore known as the home of the Republican Patty Murray.

In defense of Boehner, he's usually more glib with responses than this. Maybe it's because he feels a bit guilty about smoking (unlike Jugears McFly, who just blatantly lies about it; of course why should that be different from anything else that comes out of his Kools-hole?) or maybe he was surprised by this line of attack from the likes of Schieffer, who used to be an anonymous little dweeb before going into the pit-chihuahua mode at the behest of his MFM masters.

Delaware is not Alaska. The Palin endorsement will motivate the dreaded moderates to stop by the polls on their way to Buckley's or Harry's Savoy to vote for the dreaded RINO. The O'Donnell contingent was already fired up before SP. The final results will be much closer than Castle's campaign had anticipated, he'll win by about 2-3 points.
(Sorry for jacking the smoking thread. FWIW no Salem 100s to be found at my house these past ten years or so.)

Typical lefty bullshit.
The MFM are targeting and polarizing their new found enemy. GWB isn't working anymore, so the left have found a new enemy. The left must create a boogieman to demonize. The left's ideas are so horrid for America, this is all they can do.
The left have an arsenal of rotten and corrupt ideas, but they know those ideas won't fly before an election so the boogieman play has to come out of the MFM bag o tricks.

The fact that Boehner gave such a limp response, when he should've laughed uproariously and said, "Tell you what Bob, I'll quit when the president does. We can form our own two-man support group!" should be all the evidence the left needs that this Alinskyite play against him won't work.
Bingo, he should have tossed it right back in his face.
I would have done one better and asked about all the cash Obama took from BP and when is he going to stop using "big oil" products?

The MFM are targeting and polarizing their new found enemy.
People like to cite Alinsky, but George Orwell had these guys pegged.
Boehner is the recipient of the 2010 version of the Emmanuel Golstein award. Rush Limbaugh is the usual recipient, but Newt Gingrich won it in 1994.
Newsmag covers from that time show how vicious they were.
I would advise Boener not to defend himself ,but to keep reinforcing this analogy. He can mention Alinsky, but keep mentioning Orwell.

I'm getting seriously peeved that all the TV talking heads are interviewing Muzzies who are boo-hooing about how the "radicals" among them will get all upset and whine and do damage and stuff unless we submit completely to the demands of Allah and the Mohammedan Mouthpiece.
What happened to "if they break the laws, arrest them" and "if they attack us, kill them," eh?
Unlike the early civil-rights movement, the Muzzie Rebellion is all about dominance, not equality. One-way tolerance.
Someone needs to tell the Muzzies to STFU, and do it fast, lest they find out how the American public reacts when pushed too far by imams, "tolerance" goons and treasonous government "leaders."

Last night one of my freinds told me with a straight face that academics and teachers are the millionaires, some billionaires next door and the reason why BO had to increase salaries for public employees was to attract them to the administration.
This is true about lawyers. The legal profession is such a corrupt swamp that there are a great deal of rich lawyers. So rich that they couldn't imagine taking the overinflated law school salaries. (A rich lawyer is prima facie evidence of a corrupt system.)
But even if your friend were right, how's that workin' out for them?
For most of these people, they'll take the low government salaries because when they get out, there's always a fat salary waiting.

I'm not saying this for any reason but that their behavior hasn't reflected that of a bunch of people who really want to take over and win. they might just be happy the way things are, they might erroneously think that they can stop anything further just by not funding it or letting it out of committee and they can do it the way things are now and they don't have to have pressure cause then anything they do looks good.
No, the Bob Michel theory doesn't hold. Bohner wants to be speaker. The easiest way for him to do that at this point is to let the Democrats implode and not give them a target.

I've personally been boycotting MFM products and Hollywood for several years now. I simply won't buy anything associated with those fucking people. Its been over 3 years since I've set foot in a movie theater, I canceled a subscription to the Palm Beach Post, etc..

Same here. The last movie I saw in a theater was Mission:Impossible and my daily habit of buying The Dispatch on the way to work came to an end shortly thereafter.
Fuck em.

I don't understand this, he's saying that we are going to be in a mess for quite a while, the prez is saying it...pretty soon Joe will come out and say it to seal the deal. Now they are going to nominate eliz for something and maybe this is the lead up to the nomination so that they think everyone will be so greatful that they will run out and vote dem...but geez if the republicans were going all over bringing the "doom and gloom" for jobs and the economy scenario wouldn't the campaign have their minions all over the itnernets saying how horrible things are....instead like mcshame the republicans are out there praising austan and looking forward to liz.
what the heck is going on?

Smokers over 30 are pretty easily spotted in a line-up -- especially women after you hear them talk or cough. But hey, it is their choice.
Racist.

Fucking "Face the Nation" is still on television? Must be watched by the same clueless idiots who view msnbc. All nine of them.
And 161, that's some funny shit right there, my brother.

If I could find out what brand he smokes, I'd send a carton to my representative.
Smoking detrimental?
Well, I remind you that it was detriments like us that made this bloody Empire and the Izzat of the Raj. We'll take one of your cigars apiece and you shall watch us light up.

I'll always be ready to give Boehner the benefit of the doubt, even if I question whether he's up to the challenge ahead.
I'll never forget the speech he gave on the floor of the House, just before passage of Obamacare. The one which he kicked off by saying "shame on this House, shame on this body!" until he gradually worked himself up to a fever pitch with the "Hell no you can't!" refrain that we all remember.
I teared up as I watched that speech as I saw someone who felt in their heart the same rage and sadness as I did at that moment- that we'd lost something special, something we loved had been taken from us and destroyed or if not destroyed then forever altered, damaged.
If the Boehner we see as Speaker of the House is anything remotely like the Boehner we saw give that speech, then I'm more than willing to give him chance. If the John Boehner we see as House Speaker is anything like the John Boehner in the following still-shot, then I say bring him on!

Boehner: " ... and should YOU become a serious Journalist, you could set a good example for the country by saying 'I'm going to stop misrepresenting the truth' ..."

There are many ways to "set a good example for our country"....
I'm curious, why hasn't Obama and his sorry band of men been held to that standard?

The ideal response:
"Bob, what I do is my business. I don't tell you what to do, so there's no reason for you or anyone else to tell me what to do."

I cant watch Shieffer without getting pissed off. But what I gather from the internets the conversation went like this?
Schieffer - Would you be willing to negotiate if it means you get only part of what you seek?
Boehner - Yes
Schieffer - You heard it here folks, republicans are the party of NO
Schieffer - Do you smoke big tobacco?
Boehner - Matter of fact I do Bob.
Schieffer - Wouldn't you say causing 400,000 cancer deaths a year would disqualify you to be a future disgraced speaker?
Boehner - I didn't...
Schieffer - Let me interrupt you & remind the viewers at home that you hate the middle class. Thats a stunning admission.
Boehner - Its America Bob, smoking is legal and people are free to choose.
Schieffer - But times change. Are you aware of that. This isn't the 1800's. All races must come together. Do I need to remind you of the past 8 years prior to the last 2.3 years?
Schieffer - Jim Crow
Schieffer - By advocating big tobacco you advocate middle class people shooting themselves in the head? How do you live with yourself?
Boehner - No, suicide is illegal Bob.
Schieffer - Middle class.
Schieffer - Thats quite a tan. You know what tanning does to middle class health care costs? The CBO says it squeezes them. Let me ask you this congressman - you have some nerve being tan after what the last 8 years prior to the last 2.3 years did to the middle class, wouldn't you agree? And then if we skip the 8 years prior to that, and focus on the prior 4 years aren't you ashamed to be here still squeezing the middle class with your failed policies.
Boehner - Whats the question?
Schieffer - I'll ask the questions if you don't mind. Thats been the format here for 60 years. After we return our next guest will summarize the disgust American middle class feels towards an eight year period which ended 2.3 years ago.
Boehner - Thanks Bob, and thanks for having me on.
Schieffer - How dare you.
