Luckily, I'm traveling by car tomorrow to the in-laws. Ms. RightWingProf, her sisters, and her mother are al good kooks, and the brother-in-law has a home theater setup with a roughly 10-foot screen and leather recliners for all. Now THAT's how to watch football games.

4 I don't travel on Thanksgiving anymore. The last time I drove down to my old hometown in GA on Wed pm before Thanksgiving when I got on I-20 it was backed up bad. It was 50 mph on the Eastern side of Columbia. When I got closer to Columbia it was like rush hour traffic in CA. Drive a mile or two at 20 mph and stop. It stayed that way all the way to Augusta where I finally got off.

It was awful.

Fox 5 saw one turkey playing chicken with a car. The bird just stood there, until the driver gave in and went around.

One woman recently said she was trapped in her car after turkeys jumped onto her windshield.

LOL, someone needs to tell these city slickers that turkeys are just about the stupidest animals on the face of the earth. (Guinea hens, a close relative, are probably stupider.)

Turkeys are so stupid if you don't run them into the bard during a rainstorm they will look up at the rain and drown.

And the secret to driving though a flock of turkeys? Don't worry about them. If they don't get out of the way turkey bones will not puncture a tire.

11 Big news here is the "pending sale" of the Roche plant over in Florence county.

This is the thing that always pisses me off about the way they get these plants to come in. This plant was started on and announced in 1981. What is coincidental about them wanting to sell it now before 2011? Can you say 10 year anniversary? Can you say all those tax breaks are expiring?

How many would like to bet that the "new owner" will get a fresh round of tax breaks as an incentive to buy?

How many would like to bet that the "new owner" is a shell corporation subsidiary of Roche?

What we need to do to eliminate this crap where one business is favored over the others is to give the same damn tax breaks to all businesses and make them permanent.

Wild turkeys are anything but stupid; they can be downright aggressive at times. It's their domesticated cousins who are beyond brain dead.

The article says some woman dropped off a few several years ago. Since there's no hunting there I can see how they've lost their fear of humans.

If you read the article you will see that these are not true "wild turkeys". I am very familiar with wild turkeys and these ain't wild.

19 Odd and nice to see a late-late post at AoSHQ. Or is 6 am early? I have yet to turn in; keeping really strange hours, sleeping from 5am-ish to 2pm the days I don't work and then 7pm to 10/11pm the days I do. Goodnight.

20 A federal appeals court Tuesday halted the killing of sea lions that had been feeding on endangered salmon along the Columbia River, pointing out contradictions in the government's conservation policy that targets the natural predators while allowing fishermen to take many more of the scarce fish.

At least two dozen of the flippered predators have been captured and euthanized by the National Marine Fisheries Service since the federal government in 2008 authorized the agency to kill protected sea lions in Washington, Oregon and Idaho to prevent them from feeding on salmon and steelhead headed upstream to spawn.

An Oregon judge declined later that year to stop the lethal taking of "individually identifiable pinnipeds that are having a significant negative impact" on salmon stocks, as permitted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that ruling, saying that the fisheries service policy of killing sea lions to prevent them from consuming as much as 4% of the salmon gathering around Bonneville Dam was inconsistent with its assessment that fishermen could catch up to 17% of the stock without harming recovery efforts for the endangered species.

23 Don't give wild turkeys too much credit -- they aren't all that smart. I know turkey hunters get all worked up about calling them in, but there's a flock living near me that wanders through our back yard a couple of times each year and they think nothing of me walking out my back door to get a better look. I could prolly nail one with a wrist rocket.

So, you're in SC, Vic? After leaving grad school, I started working at the DuPont May Plant in Camden; it's now owned by Invista, a subsidiary of Koch Industries.

At the time I was there, on some SC maps there were two places named Elgin. Folks at work told me the one located between Camden and Columbia had formerly been named Blaney. However, to help lure the Elgin watch company to build a manufacturing plant there, the town changed its name, among other things. At the time I lived in SC, Elgin Watch was long gone and its former plant was manufacturing tires. I don't know whether the tire company is still there or if they skedaddled, too.

Yeah, I am not too far from there. Note that Camden is also the home of our favorite pseudo-conservative, Kathleen, Parker.

As for Elgin, I never could figure that out. There is an Elgin in Kershaw County (Camden) and one in Lancaster county. If I am not mistaken, for a town to change its name it takes an act of the legislature and a revision to the State Constitution. So one wonders how they did that? But that was all long before I got here in 1977.

Believe it or not, there's a Boy Scout Reservation (Camp Pouch) of considerable size located in the middle of Staten Island, so there are possible places for them to live. Unfortunately, the BSA council that owns the property can no longer afford to keep it and it is now on the market. Say goodbye to what little open space remains.

The woman was probably some animal rights ninny. There used to be a fenced-in enclosure at a park in my home town in which a small herd of whitetail deer were put on display. For budgetary reasons the town destroyed the enclosure, but failed to move all of the deer out of the park and into the wilderness outside of town. Local "animal lovers" adopted the remnants of the herd and fed them during the winter. When not getting fed by humans, the deer destroyed vegetation in the park to sustain themselves. Any proposal made to eliminate the deer problem was met with a great hue and cry of "Leave Bambi alone!" The idjits failed to see that to leave the deer in place was to have them be permanently malnourished.

29 Yep, Camden became a favorite place to live for a lot of our "new hires" because it was not too far away (in their minds) and it was close proximity to Columbia w/o actually being in Columbia.

Personally I thought it was too far to drive everyday, especially when a great many of our days were 12 hour days. (now all of them are).
