So who did Charlie Rangel replace?
— Purple Avenger

To properly place Charlies transgressions in context, a bit reflection might be in order.

Charlie seems like he's been there forever, but another came before him, one he knocked off in a primary in June of 1970. The first two female Army generals got their stars in June of 1970. "The Long and Winding Road" was the Beatles' last #1 song in June 1970 - that's how long ago June of 1970 was.

Everyone thinks Charlie is a real "piece of work", but in reality, he's rather tepid as corrupt Harlem politicians go. Adam Clayton Powell, held the seat prior to Charlie and he was truly a "piece of work". Powell had the world class jumbo cajones to blackmail Martin Luther King into canceling civil rights marches targeted at the Democrat convention in 1960. He threatened to claim King had a homosexual relationship. King relented and canceled the marches. When it came to wielding influence and twisting(breaking) arms, Powell was real Jedi Knight, while our era's hapless Charlie is more like an 6 year old kid waving around a fake plastic made in China WalMart light saber powered by two "D" cells.

You can read all about Adam Clayton Powell here.

Curiously, Powell was also one of the few reps ever expelled from congress, but that didn't harm his popularity(at the time) at all. He had the moxie to enter and WIN the special election held to replace him! You'd never see Adam Clayton Powell sniveling and groveling before the ethics committee the way Charlie did.

1 Yes, Adam Clayton Powell was a crook. Yes he got reelected. Yes even a Dem controlled congress ejected him.

Would they do the same today?

Not a chance in hell.

Well, someone told RFK to bug King's motel rooms and set him up with hookers and blackmail him and etc. But JFK freed a lot of people and was good, so it can't have been him.

The FBI kept an open investigation on him. That was because he was funded by the East European communists and was a communist himself. Do some research and look at all the "marches" he did in the latter years of his life.

They had NOTHING to do with 'civil rights".

And BTW, his actual records have been sealed by the FBI at the request of his "heirs".

It's sad.  I know decent people who'll vote for Dems--heck, a couple who run (for local offices) under that banner.  It's wrenching, but I consider the label an immediate disqualifier because of the pervasive taint now.  Didn't used to, but it's all too far gone now.

If you have never read it, please read Native Son by Richard Wright. It is Obama's favorite book. It was published in 1940. It is a work of fiction but it details the way in which the communists used the black community to further their idealology. Richard Wright was a black man who sympathized with the communists because he saw them as the answer to the black plight. Later, the communists identified the black churches as a powerful force in the black community and so co-opted the south american "liberation theology" to adapt christianity to marxism.

Quite astounding and completely hidden.

26 I remember when all that crap went down...

Adam Clayton Powell was an arrogant prick that did NOT take shit off of anyone.

He essentially told the House leadership to go screw themselves and kept on taking trips and flaunting his corruption for all to see, daring them to do something about it because he was black and knew he was untouchable.

Good to see that sniveling bastard Charlie can't live up to the corruption foisted off on the public by his predecessor.

Powell and his third wife, Puerto Rican Yvette Diago, had a son Adam Clayton Powell Diago, so named in the matrilineal tradition of some Latino cultures. This son changed his name to Adam Clayton Powell IV when he moved to the mainland from Puerto Rico to attend Howard University. This caused confusion because his nephew, only 8 years younger than he, was also named Adam Clayton Powell IV.

The politician A. C. Powell IV named his son Adam Clayton Powell V.

29 You want to know how they get re-elected? My where to start, look at cities like Detroit that have had Democrooks in charge for decades and the ruin that they made of the city. They get elected not by actual vote, no, they are preelected, hell they don't even wait until the votes are counted before they tell us who was preselected. All this has now gone national starting with Al Gore ( actually long before ) we saw the openly obvious attempt to steal an election, and yet we still ask the question "how do they keep getting elected" if you control the voting and vote counting, well anything is  possible.

32 Given today's Congressional climate -- the CBC, a bunch of race-guilt-ridden lib members -- and assists provided by Eric Shabazz Holder and the Mohammedan Mouthpiece his own self -- ACP would be the King of Congress.

Remember, he worked his scams in the face of solid opposition that wanted him out of the way: all those Southern Democrat ex-Klansmen, the ones who are today revered by the lefties as Civil Rights Giants© were looking for any excuse to make ACP go away.

Powell would have had Maxine Waters and the rest of the opportunistic whiners licking his fancy, hand-made boots. None could match him for sheer greed or old-fashioned chutzpah.

In fact, I miss him. A brazen, self-centered, unrepentant crook is far more interesting -- and far less damaging -- than the devious self-righteous race-baiters of today.

33 Holy Shit! Totally OT.  Totally New To Me:

Have you ever heard of this? Do you know you are paying to school Dictators/Murderers? It is Dept of Defense thing:

When the elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, was dragged from his bed and flown out of the country in his pyjamas last year, it was no surprise to find that this classic coup was led by a graduate of the School of Americas, the notorious army training school in Fort Benning, Georgia. But General Vasquez was simply following a well-trodden path for autocrats in Honduras – after all, two of the country's most hated past dictators, Juan Melgar Castro and Policarpo Paz Garcia, had also attended the school.

More than 60,000 Latin American soldiers have been trained at the School of the Americas – among them, the some of the region's most notorious human rights abusers

They disguise the core sin with raiments of that false virtue, "social justice." (This is what community organizers do, too.) Collectivists bring misery and suffering to this earth, and their desired end state crushes human souls. Their fifth-column collaborators in the first world propagandize on their behalf by attacking the institutions that are effective in combating the collectivists. Even if every allegation against the School of the Americas were true and as bad as the deluded moonbats claim, what is wrong with treating vermin as vermin?

59 43:  Yeah, it's legit.  Been running for a long time.  The idea is (a) to raise standards with our second and lower string allies, and (b) foster closer ties with said states.  Of course given the way of realpolitik during the Cold War and after, not all of those nations have been what you call squeaky clean--a small number I'd wager, things being what they are--the fact remains that the alternatives were generally even worse.

By the way, when you hear someone complaining about this program, ask them about what they think of engaging with China, Iran, Syria, the Palestinians, etc.  Then record the result, as I guarantee it's going to be an excellent example of 'cognitive dissonance' you can refer to for future use.

You could easily paint the entire military that way. Consider Timothy McVeigh and his accomplice. Consider the numerous serious criminals in our prisons who are veterans. Much of their skill set applied to mayhem was acquired from Uncle Sam on the taxpayer's dime.

And at any given moment there are a number of career military guys who couldn't stay out trouble anywhere else. They need the regimentation to keep theirs lives on the right course. Further, a lot of guys in prison might have made decent career military guys if they'd been placed in that environment when they came of age.

You cannot stabilize and influence a foreign nation without involvement in how power is wielded there. Why do you suppose we're so heavily invested in training the new police and military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan? Even though a certain percentage of those guys go to the opposition, taking all of the skills we've bestowed with them.

There are positives and negatives to everything. One reason cancer has become such a big concern isn't because it is more common. There is no solid evidence for that. More likely, it is because so many of the things that used to kill humans in box lots and now no longer threats or greatly reduced. This leave cancer as a near inevitability if you live long enough and acquired enough exposure to naturally occurring things like cosmic rays and cumulative cellular defects.
