Soft Open For Be The Wave Project

Here's what CAC, George Orwell, and I knocked together. CAC did the maps, George Orwell did the animation, and I complained about shit and brought a poisonous attitude to the project.

That video quality is bad. We'll try to do flash or something. (George Orwell uploaded it to youtube; looks a lot better there.)

So here's the thing: Delayed until tomorrow morning because there's no sense at all rolling it out at this hour.

But, if you're interested in doing this -- in signing up for a day over the next three weeks (I'm doing three or more myself) -- let me know by email and I'll give you the super-secret URL so you can sign up.

Particularly bloggers and big twitterers or tea party activists, I mean, because we'd like to have a bunch of planned events filled in ASAP.

Oh: As I've already mentioned I'm doing something in Newton, MA for Sean Bielat on Saturday, like 12:00 (lunch, gather), then 1:00 to 6:00 or so, then like out for dinner and drinks for whoever wants to come.

20 I'm telling you, MA-4 is really starting to get a Scott Brown type of vibe. Here's an example.

My daughter had a sleepover Sunday night, and one of the moms who was picking up her daughter the next morning asked me about the Bielat sign in my yard and about why I was supporting him. I gave her the quick bio - Marine, businessman, Harvard public policy, Wharton MBA, etc. and then explained quickly why Frank just has to go (must pay for the housing meltdown/economic collapse, etc.).

She completely got it. Everybody here knows he's full of shit about his newfound longtime concerns with Fannie and Freddie. But then she offered up this little tidbit ... she has a few neighbors who are lifelong Democrats (hey, it's Massachusetts). They have Bielat signs in their yards, and they didn't openly support Scott Brown (but I bet they voted for him).

It's like folks around here were held captive by the Democrats until they finally got beaten enough that they revolted. The Scott Brown victory shook them out of the Stockholm Syndrome that kept them from admitting to their neighbors that they're something other than a hard-left Dem.

Scott won the district in January, and I think there's a damned good chance Sean takes it too on November 2.

31 Not having much luck with that GOP phone-from-home thing. First, the HOW-TO video cuts off half-way thru. Then I tried to make a call anyway - when I click on the MAKE CALL button, nothing happens. Tried two different browsers - nothing. The basic tech works - I was able to register and the GOP robo-site called me back and had me enter the 5 digit number but nothing else is working. No answer to the help emails I sent either.

Another anecdote (and I may have posted this one before, so forgive me): The weekend before the Scott Brown special election, he held a huge rally in Worcester that my wife, son and I went to.

Our daughter had a Girl Scout thing that day and one of the other troop moms took her. I noticed the mom had on a Scott Brown t-shirt under her coat when we dropped my daughter off, as the logo was barely peering out the top, but I didn't say anything.

When I went back that night to pick her up, I asked my daughter if she had told the mom where we went that day, and she said she hadn't. I said, "we went to Worcester."

She knew exactly what I meant, and it wasn't that we were there shoe shopping. Turns out her husband had been phone banking for Scott all day.

This'll never be Texas, but I don't think Massachusetts is quite as blue as arrogant pricks like John Kerry and Barney Frank would like to believe.

71 If you look at my twitter feed, someone wants to campaign for Dioguardi in Brooklyn; maybe on Sunday. Dioguardi, as far as I can tell, seems to be missing ground troops and organization. He could use a TeaParty assist, but as far as I can tell, the TP in NYC is kinda not so organized (though I do get their e-mails...)

The Senate is a state-wide race, so getting any number of votes in NYC could be quite valuable.

Looking for ideas. I've always been intrigued by the fact that while NYC is an ultra-BLUE zone, the major media is here, so any visible RED activity can get the attention of FNC and the MFM...

The other really local race, Michael Grimm, seems to be going well.

75 The "dink dink" at the end is there because I thought the earthquake stuff was cool but also too serious and "boy" and I wanted to lighten it up at the end with some puckish cutesy. I asked CAC to change his prediction and make Hawaii all red to make that dink dink work at the end. That is total bullshit (the big district that's blue is +35 Dem). But that's the only pure bullshit thing on the map; everything else is sorta doable. I told CAC to push it to beyond best case scenario. but all those red districts (save for the biggest land area one in hawaii) really COULD turn red. The sound effect was hard to find, looked for crashing waves and earthquakes. the waves sounded too pleasant (like having a corona at saint bart's) and the earthquake stuff just sounded scratchy. I realized the sound of what I wanted was more like the space shuttle's engines ingniting -- rumble, rumble-- so that's what that is. George Orwell had the idea of making the original red dark and somber and the new red bright and vibrant which was pretty brilliant, I think.

I don't expect anything to change now but I seriously would have had the wave starting in the center of the country, and moving out in both directions, to kinda reflect the outsider nature of this wave and the Tea party movement. There's another sound I'm thinking of, a familiar effect from TV or cartoons. It's like a sheet of metal that has been struck and then flapped from one end, sending a wave down the metal and giving a "bwoooow" sound.

But it's also cool like it is.

Very cool graphic. Goes great with coffee. I'm not sure what to make of polling - this year will be very different because those 80% of the population angry about the economy aren't all R's and I's. Some people will change their voting style this time without changing their political affiliation. Polling adjusted for party affiliation with then necessarily be off by whatever percentage crosses over to vote.
