Something Silly: Are You a Dog Person or a Cat Person? [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

That thread was getting a bit gamey, so how about an online "personality" quiz courtesy of the Christian Science Monitor?

FWIW, I got "You're sort of a cat person."

You are a bit of a dreamer, with wide-ranging interests, but with a tendency to misplace things and procrastinate. You don't mind being alone, and when you go to parties you usually end up having long conversations with just a few people. You tend to fret too much, but given a chance to reflect you are able to put things in perspective. (Or maybe we've got you completely wrong. This isn't really science, after all.)

And Open Thread.

21 So really this CSM quiz thingy is one of those kinda standard personality tests, modified to be cat or doggy in nature. When I was looking for links, I assumed it was "should you have a dog or a cat?" Along those lines, however, here's a dog breed selector that I thought was pretty good: http://www.animalplanet.com/breed-selector/dog-breeds/questionnaire/page1.html?q=1

They can be really good pets. If you get a good one, they're very affectionate. Unfortunately, they also have scent glands that can really stink the place up if you don't have them removed. Plus, you need to make sure to clean the shavings on a very regular basis or else they start to stink. I didn't get to have him long, unfortunately. My sis was allergic to him.

An acquaintance of mine bought her son a guinea pig as a pet. One day, she went into his room and discovered that the poor thing was deceased. To save on grief with the boy, she took the carcass outside and tossed it into the woods. Too late, she learned that guinea pigs hibernate. She threw away a perfectly good pet. Dumb Broad.

I'm very definitely a dog person, but I don't mind cats (once had a one myself and she was great - a very "dog-like" kitty)

However, I'm now allergic to all cats, it used to be just certain kittehs, but now the allergy is so severe that if I pet one and then rub my eyes or nose, my eyes are swollen shut and itch like crazy and my throat starts closing in seconds. So, no kittehs for me and if I pet one, I have to scrub my hands very thoroughly.

One of our dogs is scratching constantly.  (Even after flea treatments.) His skin looks kind of scaly (or dandruffy?) especially near the  base of his tail which is where he bites/digs the most.  He also scratches his belly a lot and bites at his paws-knuckles and pads.  Does this sound familiar?  We have taken corn and wheat out of his diet as best we can.  Could it be an allergy or skin disorder?

-Oh, and we have a cat, too, so to the OP: yes.

The middle cat is a psycho and a vegetarian cat (she won't eat our bodies if we die in the house), but pretty and funny. Also, if he's biting and scratching, he could give himself a secondary skin infection and those can be a bitch to treat. My collie has flare ups of skin problems from time to time. Some of them are seasonal allergies (she also has trouble with smoke during wildfire season). Those are treatable with benadryl.

186 62 in the canine world corgis are too far towards the freak end of curve. get a real dog.

The dog world is all about personality. Maybe the cat world is too, I can't say, but a disproportionate number of cats seem to be chosen for looks ("Look how his ears fold!"), or Obama-like hauteur, or manipulative pretending-to-look-adorable eyes, or something I can't even see because I'm not a cat person.

Corgis have a great personality -- they're eager, they're smart, they really bond, and they just seem so happy. Beagles, for example are a nice normal looking dog, but, short legs and all, a corgi will win the personality contest 49 times out of 50 over a beagle.

214 150 So I got back from Brazil yesterday (sorry Tami, you can't have my stuff) and had a great time with my customer. He lives in Rio now, le sigh, but he grew up in Manaus which is the capitol of the Amazon region of Brazil. His pet growing up? A jaguar. I shit you not. He had a jaguar as a pet. If that qualifies as a kitty I'm a cat person. You walk down the street with a jaguar on a leash and you are getting some. Posted by: JackStraw at March 16, 2014 10:16 PM (g1DWB) Is his name, perchance, Diego? And does he happen to have a cousin named Dora who had a pet monkey?

217 I like pretty much every animal, with some notable exceptions. Ticks, sharks near where I'm swimming, things that find their homes in urethras, skunks or porcupines when they're pissed, a few other exceptions. I have cats, work with horses, am waiting for the right time to spring a husky on the household.

219 One of our dogs is scratching constantly.

This sounds sort of like allergies.  You might start trying out a shampoo with oatmeal and if that doesn't help, talk to your vet.  Benadryl can work very well in dogs with allergies, my 65lb mutt takes it and it has cut down on his paw licking/biting/scratching significantly.

My dad grew up on a farm. They had a black lab named Queenie with the glossest, shiniest coat ever. They also had a bunch of chickens that didn't seem to be laying eggs - until one day they caught Queenie in the hen house, eating eggs. This was during the Depression, so her egg thievery was a serious crime, but they couldn't bear to get rid of her. They just kept her away from the henhouse and mixed a raw egg in with her food every one and then to keep her happy.

Elizabeth is the first field lab for us.  All the others were English.

She was a placid pup until about 6-7 mos, then went screw loose.  Took a year for her to settle down enough to train properly.

Now, she's a joy to have around.  I hunt her hard, for waterfowl, and small game--she's developed into a real gem.

As long as she stayed on the grass, all was well, but let that baby try and put a teeny lil foot on the sidewalk and she'd butt her ever so gently back. A couple of the girls I've loved were "cat women." I never could understand how they treated that cat litter smell. Old Dinah always scratched the door to be let out. To relieve himself. Yes, "she" was a "he." I named him at 3 years old when I was in love with Dinah Shore....

Every coon dog I've ever heard has:

The long 'bawl' when first on the scent.

Sets into a slightly different / shorter version when on the trail.

Again the long 'bawl' when it finally trees the coon.

Then sets into a steady' chop' until you get to the tree. (think of it as a big dogs version of a yapper)
