Something That Needs To Be Said
— DrewM

And often.

Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear begins an auto review with a page out of Atlas Shrugged.

There was a time, not that long ago, when no one in this country ever spoke about how much anyone earned. I remember once being in a Swedish tank when all of a sudden the captain turned and asked: “Right. How much did you make last year?” I couldn’t have been more taken aback if he’d asked me how often I had anal sex.

Now, though, things are different. We are told, often, that the director-general of the BBC earns more than £800,000 and that this is an obscene amount of money. Right. I see. So what should he be paid? Half that? A quarter? Is £50,000 acceptable? To someone on the minimum wage, probably not.

Doubtless the bitter and the twisted looked at all those multi-millionaires in this newspaper’s recent Rich List and thought: “How can any one man possibly have a fortune of £1 billion?”

Why shouldn’t he? It is no skin off your nose. At the very least, you don’t have to sit next to him on a plane. And anyway, if the government took all his money away and distributed it evenly among the rest of the population, you’d be £16 richer and he’d be wondering why he spent his whole life working so damn hard.

He did. One thing IÂ’ve noticed over the years is that if you drive into London at 6am, half of the cars on the roads are Porsches and Astons. Whereas if you go in at ten to nine, theyÂ’re all Renaults. Simple solution, then. You want a nice car? Get up earlier and do more work.

This opinion no longer washes, though. I appear to be in a minority of one. People still want to be rich, but they donÂ’t want anyone else to get there first...

And there's a review of a Porsche I'll never own and don't care much about.

The first presidential candidate to run on this platform (and does one other thing) will receive the coveted DrewM. endorsement.

It is patriotic.  Don't you get it?  They realize that Kerry supporters, particularly those who persist to this day, deserve derision and disrespect by anyone who loves this country.

All those SwiftBoat Vets told the fucking truth about that traitor Kerry, and Edwards is also disgraced.  Any decent person dislikes a Kerry supporter greatly.  Any patriot makes fun of them for their opinion.

I have a different take on it than Clarkson's.

What we have is a group of ruling elites who are very wealthy and want to pull up the 'ladder of success' so no one else can get to the 'top.'

These ruling elites now feel their place is to 'lead' the people by telling them how to live and distributing the wealth of others, i.e., the workers and producers.

If you are a guy like a Walton or Gates who builds your fortune by hard work, more power to you. If you are a jerk who uses CDS and hedges to screw around with the American economy, may zombie George Washington eat your brain.

23 And Clarkson can be a real gasbag sometimes.  He often mocks American cars, which shouldn't be a tough target since we have GM, maker of 7 of the 10 worst cars in the world, but he often is caught fucking up the facts when he does it.

I ascribe it to patriotism, which I imagine is a real challenge for any British man today.  He mocks our military every now and then while showing love for his troops.  I think of him as our outspoken gasbag patriot.  Someone we all know an example of... and they aren't bad people.  Clarkson also mocks the nanny state and the loser, and he is better at communicating how awesome a car is than most other people in his field.

I don't resent the rich. But I resent it when they feel the need to tell the rest of us how to live and how much taxes we should pay, and how NOW, after they have their vast fortune, they're all in favor of government regulation.

Open markets, eased regulation, free enterprise, and small government have a uncanny knack of going out of favor when people have secured a fortune.

74 Cavmedic, he does pop off with antiAmerican stuff every now and then, but there's a line.  I think he knows how to poke fun at everyone, and he does.

He really isn't bitter unless he's discussing the faults of his own nation.  If he's insulting other countries, it always seems to be either simple making fun of stereotypes or military bragging (often bragging about something Lockheed made, lol).  In this day and time, it's hard to see Europeans making fun of America as anything but antiamericanism, but in this case, I don't see it that way.   There's a difference between nationalism humor and hatred of freedom, capitalism, our way of life.

I don't think Clarkson's style of humor is understood by enough folks.  I bet a lot of the antiAmerican psychos out there laugh at his mocking if the Mustang and think he's a commie like them, even, and are shocked when he says something I'd expect him to say.

82 I love how Snapdragon claims that, in London, there are no people demonizing the wealthy.  Are you fucking kidding me?

They are the majority by far.  they are imaginary?  Why would anyone pretend that?

I wonder if Snapdragon even read what he's condemning.   The fact that wealth is not associated with hard work is something anyone familiar with England understands well.  It's a nation of whining about how there aren't enough benefits from the government, and very little real innovation.  It's a dying nation.

snappy is simultaneously being the mindset being criticized while denying such a mindset is anything but imagined.  That way he can pretend no one has pointed at the flaws in his worldview.  That's cowardice.

101 I respect BBC more than the American version because the American version tells you it's not funded by your tax dollars.  They pretend this while laundering tax dollars to stations which 'buy' the programing made by NPR or PBS with tax dollars that are written on paper as though Rush Limbaugh or Casey Casem bought the crap.

And it really is crap.  They put disclaimers on old Sesame Street that has less brainwashing and is more strictly educational.  The disclaimed says that stuff isn't for education because it's from our backwards 80s and 90s.

Now, they have a puppet for Bill Oreilly on Fox News as an example of evil (I'm not kidding, I was flipping around a few months back, and that's what they are feeding our kids).

I actually love the idea of public TV, and I have not problem with disclosing their salaries.  Neither idea is in conflict with Jeremy's point that people who want a nicer life can actually have a nicer life if they take responsibility, and cannot have a nicer life by hoping the government will take from the wealthy (of course, sending their investments and future prosperity away).

Watch how hard liberals fight to avoid this basic argument about individual freedom and responsibility and happiness.  They do this because they are not liberal at all.

Jane, I think the two World Wars broke the collective spirit of the great powers of Europe.  In response, they turned away from any sort of nationalism....They became ultra-liberal, honoring all cultures to the point of losing themselves.

156 Java and Jane; Actually, I saw that ep of America when it aired last week.  I'm pretty sure they mentioned like 400 ships in the flotilla, THEN mentioned the ship of the line that was mixed in with the flotilla (talked about the cost and how each SOL had more large caliber guns than the entire garrison defending NYC)

158 I've always had the sneaking suspicion that Clarkson likes the U.S.A more than any self-respecting Englishman would ever let on.

I saw the "American South" road trip, and yeah, parts of that stung-- such as the section in which Clarkson was ranting about the slow Katrina clean-up.  I was shouting at the TV: "DO YOU HAVE ANY FUCKING IDEA, JEREMY,  HOW MUCH MONEY PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS DONATED, AND HOW IRREVOCABLY FUCKED UP NEW ORLEANS' GOVERNANCE IS?!"  I'm thinking he doesn't, and I can see how someone not familiar with the colossal pre-Jindal fuckup that was Louisiana (still is, in many ways) can reach the conclusion he did.

But the show tweaks everybody, particularly the French.  There have been several Americans in the "Reasonably Priced Car" segment; James May once went to LA to interview Jay Leno and test drive a hydrogen car (he also did an entire program about Apollo and high-altitude flying here); all three went to Utah to drive the salt flats; and most recently they took a road trip in three American muscle cars which they first mocked, but all three admitted in the end, on camera, that they'd fallen in love with them.

So yeah, there are cringable moments of anti-Americanism, but I don't think any of them truly hates the United States.  For example, Clarkson kept making anti-American jabs during the "motorcycles across Vietnam" special, and, as he rode into North Korea, he was yelling about how awesome he was for doing something in three days the entire American military couldn't do in a decade... and then he promptly fell off the bike, cracked two ribs, and didn't say anything about it ever again. More than anything, Jeremy Clarkson has a sense of humor about himself, or we would have never seen that faceplant.

167 I suppose I"m the only one to notice that Mr. Clarkson has just written a fair commentary on the 10th Commandment. The covet business. These people who get their nose into how much other people have, are doing nothing but coveting their neighbor's prosperity. This is Sunday, so I'll thump my Bible and say that not only is Mr. Clarkson speaking right out of Atlas Shrugged, he's also Scriptural!

171 OH, and liberals?  When you're done lecturing me to shop independent bookstores, could you also tell independent bookstore owners not to insult the reading material of the clientele?

Today I was in a tiny little town and purposely got a book at a self-owned shop.  It was Ayn Rand's The Art of Writing Fiction.  Counter guy looks at the title, frowns, and says, "Just don't go believing any of her propaganda."  Normally, I hate, I hate, I HATE conflict, but I said, with absolutely no trace of being amused, "Actually, I just finished Atlas Shrugged, and I think she's right about a lot of things."  He laughed an embarrassed laugh and dropped it.

So, thanks for the lesson, commies.  Next time I'll be sure to get my books cheaper from used brokers on Amazon, where the text arrives in a handy hobo-stuffing, carbon footprint-leaving cardboard box... but without an ounce of attitude.

172 Remember, 'the trouble in the colonies' was just one of many things all on Britain's plate at the same time. They were pretty much in a constant state of war with France, and to a lesser degree the Dutch and Italy. A credible argument could be made that England didn't so much lose the colonies as they finally decided to cut their losses. There was a strong anti-war faction in Parliament.

173 164 The Brits have always had some anti-American tendencies, ever since the Revolutionary War. Just because we were allies during WWII doesn't mean they weren't saying anything nasty about we "Yanks", their lesser & unsophisticated cousins. Sore losers.

@ jane d'oh #120  The root of the problem in my opinion is a combination of a few generations worth of leftist propaganda pushed in the schools while being reinforced by the media. The schools plant the seed, it's fertilized and watered by the media as they grow up,and the PC police do the weeding.

I dont think they see themselves as being taken over. They probably just think they are being enlightened and fair minded.

188 The Whigs were largely against war in the Colonies, including the future PM William Pitt the Younger. Lord North was not running the war well, & some of the Whigs even called for North to broker peace. Pitt was able to rehabilitate England after the war, but war with Napoleon almost bankrupted them again.

Indeed, the Mustang is a compelling car.  And I bet Top Gear revisits the car.  They panned the Mustang a few years back and were hounded for lying about the size of the engine in the car that failed to beat a horse.

While the Mustang is much better than many alternatives, it's also much better than past Mustangs.  It's still a live rear end, I believe, so it's going to pay a price for that when you turn.  I bet it's hard to beat for the dollar, but still outperformed by some consumer priced cars.  Look forward to the Top Gear coverage.

200 Hard work is a dirty phrase to some. The usual counterargument is that ditch diggers and the like work "just as hard" but don't get paid LIKE A BOSS.

Do lefties really think that's what it's all about, I wonder? What I consider hard work is putting in overtime, like 12 hour days of figuring out new ways to earn your customer's dollars, networking with people, taking risks (like hiring employees or buying equipment), leasing or buying a building, company vehicles, inventing things, taking risks etc. You can lose sleep or sour relationships doing that sort of thing. Success isn't guaranteed. But it shouldn't be a mystery why the people steering the ship make more money if they succeed. Who decided how much the person on top makes? The customers did. On the other hand, anyone can haul dirt, which is why it only costs a case of beer to get a buddy to help you with yardwork.

The other counterargument is children of rich parents who may be spoiled and useless and do nothing to earn what they have. Simple answer is "too fucking bad." Any law that would prevent people from giving other people money gratis would no doubt make low-to-average people far worse off than rich people.

Hammond is the hip one, Clarkson is the bully boy, and May is the geek. Their schitck relies on English public school archetypes and I don't think it goes much deeper than that. The politics are secondary.
