— LauraW NSFW, language, but that's not the problem.
It's the music- is this a remake of some older tune? It's so retro it feels like a familiar song I should already know. Please let me know if this is sampled.
Love the singer's voice. Tune is ass-shakingly catchy too.
Man, please don't let me get caught singing this aloud somewhere.

It resembles a million Motown hits from the 60s. To my ear, it sounds closest to "Tracks of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

It's my new national anthem.
And it was written by someone who really has that Motown thing down. Not a ripoff, but a faithful recreation.

The song is not on YouTube and it's not like "Walk the Dinosaur".
There are three guys who take lead vocals and each has a distinct style. The stuff sung by Sweet Pea Atkinson - I can't turn you loose, Spy in the House of Love - might appeal.

Hmmm. This is bugging me too. It's a simple C D F C chord progression. I know I've heard it in that same time signature in an earlier era pop or r&b tune. I'll think of it, eventually...

Same chord progression as the Doobie Brothers "Taking it to the streets". Same tempo, same instrumentation, same use of bongos, same funky rythem.
If this some isn't a dirct rip-off, then it is definately influenced by the Doobies.

Laura, that video is only two days old, and it's killing on youtube. It's the "most viewed" video from the Czech Republic to New Zealand. It has a quarter of a million views. I know that's lagging behind the actual figure by quite a bit. We'll see in the next couple of days.

That is one catchy tune. I could not pick up a sampling of any particular song, but it's more of an amalgamation of Motown from the 70s.
How would I make that my ringtone????

It sounds like a cross between:
" I want you back" by the Jackson Five

Yes, this is designed like a lot of the great Motown tunes, with a catchy, repeated bass line, and call-response background singing. Of course, the hey day of Motown would never have this kind of lyric content. I get the shock value of it, but am afraid that an otherwise cool tune will probably wind up obsolete in twenty years or so. From this, I would not be surprised if Cee-Lo had quite a bit of other really nice stuff.
I have been a pro musician off and on for around fourty years (I started when I was a kid) and have played quite a bit in R&B bands that would have enjoyed doing this as one of their tunes. I'd bet this one would get a lot of requests. Hip.

Hark, an idea: We need to re-write this one really quickly for the midterms. Use the same video style. Get someone who can sing soul like that.
You keep passing all those bills
Without our consent
And we're like, "Fuck you!"
Oh, well, we're trying to live our lives
Without a red cent
And we're like, "Fuck you! And fuck you too."
Well, if I was richer
I know I'd be

Here's what I got so far. Can someone make this into a spoofy campaign video?
Well, you keep passing all those bills
Without our consent
And we're like, "Fuck you!"
Ooo, ooo, ooo
Oh, well, we're trying to live our lives
Without a red cent
And we're like, "Fuck you! And fuck you too."
Ooo, ooo, oooo
Well, if I was wealthier
I know I'd be healthier
Ain't that some shit?
(Ain't that some shit?)
You say you tried to do you best
Well, you've flunked the test
So, we're like, "Fuck you!"
Ooo, ooo, oooo
Posted by: rdbrewer at August 21, 2010 10:26 PM (Im/xu)
Well you're drivin' the economy
Right into the ground.
So we're like, "Fuck you."
Ooo, ooo, oooo
Oh you and Congress seem hell bent
On taking us down.
So we say, "Fuck you," and
Fuck them, too.

A few more lines. I'm trying to say close to the rhyming scheme of the original--and the wording where possible:
Yeah, we're sorry you've doomed your party
And that this means you ain't stayin' there.
Well, you should pack up, maybe go on safari
Cause the way you play the game ain't fair.
We pity the fool
Who casts his vote for you
(No shit, they're gold diggers)
Well
(Just bought your vote, William)
Ooooooooooooooooooh
I've got some news for Barney Frank.
Yeah, go on and run and tell your little boyfriend.

Here it is so far. There are a few new verses. I've written out the chorus, so it looks long. I stopped at the wimpery part. Feel free to tweak it.
Well, you keep passing all those bills
Without our consent
And we're like, "Fuck you!"
Ooo, ooo, ooo
Oh, well, we're trying to live our lives
Without a red cent
And we're like, "Fuck you! And fuck you too."
Well, if I was wealthier

Well, you've flunked the test
So, uh, "Fuck you!"
Ooo, ooo, oooo
Now, I know you think you had to borrow
Beg and steal and lie and cheat.
Tried to tell ya, tried to yell at ya
Cause keeping your ass in D.C. ain't cheap.
I pity the fool
Who casts his vote for you
(Oh, shit, she's a gold digger)
Well
(Just thought you should know, William)
Ooooooooooooooooooh
I've got some news for Barney Frank.
Ooh, I really hate your ass right now.
