Song That's Killing Me.
— LauraW

NSFW, language, but that's not the problem.

It's the music- is this a remake of some older tune? It's so retro it feels like a familiar song I should already know. Please let me know if this is sampled.

Love the singer's voice. Tune is ass-shakingly catchy too.
Man, please don't let me get caught singing this aloud somewhere.

Thanks to scott.

It resembles a million Motown hits from the 60s. To my ear, it sounds closest to "Tracks of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

Same chord progression as the Doobie Brothers "Taking it to the streets". Same tempo, same instrumentation, same use of bongos, same funky rythem.

If this some isn't a dirct rip-off, then it is definately influenced by the Doobies.

Posted by: EM August at August 21, 2010 10:21 AM (E8wmM)

64 Also, I feel compelled to point out that just because something sounds old school and has a common chord progression doesn't mean it is ripped off or derivative beyond the basic genre and feel. Cee lo isn't a hack. It just happens that most songs share the same basic progressions. Exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHBVnMf2t7w Exhibit B: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In82kPvYrM4&feature=related Exhibit C: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qNcFETNuwo&feature=related And it goes on and on. 93 They say "n****" in that song twice!  Why isn't someone up in arms screaming about it?

Posted by: Jim at August 21, 2010 09:17 PM (m/mFP)

94 The early part of the song and the vast majority of the time of the music is composed of Cmaj, Dmaj, Fmaj.  Which is, in music talk, the I, major III, IV.   Key is C major.  The singer sounds like a tenor, but a baritone with a really great high register could probably do this (just not too many times in a row, it gets up to G's and A's above middle C).

Yes, this is designed like a lot of the great Motown tunes, with a catchy, repeated bass line, and call-response background singing.  Of course, the hey day of Motown would never have this kind of lyric content.  I get the shock value of it, but am afraid that an otherwise cool tune will probably wind up obsolete in twenty years or so.  From this, I would not be surprised if Cee-Lo had quite a bit of other really nice stuff.

I have been a pro musician off and on for around fourty years (I started when I was a kid) and have played quite a bit in R&B bands that would have enjoyed doing this as one of their tunes. I'd bet this one would get a lot of requests.   Hip.

(Just thought you should know, William)

Ooooooooooooooooooh
I've got some news for Barney Frank.
Ooh, I really hate your ass right now.

Well, you keep passing all those bills
Without our consent
And we're like, "Fuck you!"
Ooo, ooo, ooo

Oh, well, we're trying to live our lives
Without a red cent
And we're like, "Fuck you!  And fuck you too."

Well, if I was wealthier
I know I'd be healthier
Ain't that some shit?
(Ain't that some shit?)

You say you tried to do you best
Well, you've flunked the test
So, uh, "Fuck you!"
Ooo, ooo, oooo

Laura, that song also sounds a little like Na Na, Hey Hey.

Appropriate.  That'd be a great victory party song on November 2d.

Dan,

'Higher and Higher'...  That's the one I couldn't put my finger on...

106 That tune sounds about right.  I'm sure that more than one chick over the years hummed that song about me.

107 Such a great new take on Motown. So many of the songs were about heartbreak so CeeLo decided to make a version on how someone would deal with it today.

108 I see you drivin' 'round town makin' bad left turns, and I'm like, "Fuck you!" Broke the shit out my knee, got my face street-burned, I'm like, "Fuck you! And-uh, fuck Hill too!"

I'm gonna get this to my Karaoke people asap!  It'd be a great piece to have on set!  Jazzy, upbeat & fun to sing!

It'd add a lot of "class"!  Thanks for sharing!
