— DrewM You stay classy Arlen....
Sources tell ABC News that Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Penn., has informed the White House that he would like to consider remaining in public service after his senate term ends at the end of this session, and White House officials are keeping an open mind about possible job openings for him....Talk of such a job, however, has raised eyebrows among SpecterÂ’s Republican Senate colleagues who are now eyeing his votes with added scrutiny. For instance, Specter seemed not particularly impressed with Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, whose nomination as Solicitor General Specter opposed last year. This week he announced support for her Supreme Court nomination.
See ole Arlen had a choice, he can vote no on Kagan, like he did when she was up for Solicitor General, as revenge for Obama's unwillingness to come out at the last minute and help him against Joe Sestak in the primary. Or he could vote yes in hopes of getting some sinecure that would allow him to "continue to serve the public"/have some position to keep his shriveled up, um, ego, in the public eye.
As always, Arlen did what was best for Arlen.
Meanwhile, Pat Toomey is in a close race with Joe Sestak but has a clear lead in money.
Less wealthy Republicans are doing well elsewhere. In Pennsylvania, Republican Pat Toomey raised more than $3 million in the quarter, and had $4.6 million on hand. Democratic nominee Joe Sestak, who defeated incumbent Arlen Specter in a tough primary, raised $1.9 million for the quarter. He had about $2 million on hand.
Meanwhile Sestak is getting hammered by the new Emergency Committee For Israel over his stances on behalf of Palestinians over Israel.
I'm glad Arlen is done, I still wish that Toomey had been the one to finish him.

Specter is, by most accounts, a miserable wretch. There's no way to get good governance out of people like that.

This. I really don't see what's in it for Specter personally. At his age, in his health, what is the point? Can he really be so power-hungry that he has to snatch at every wisp in a vain attempt to hold on? It just makes no sense.

What's supposed to happen with public servants? After a few years of service, they are supposed to return to the private sector.
Alas, DC is broken. We now have a generation of politicians who have no idea how to function in the private sector.

Definitely term limits. I'm tired of people arguing, "Yeah but what if they're doing the right thing? What good would it do to limit them before they can get the right thing done?"
Well if they were that good of a person they would mentor the next guy or gal and the right thing would go on instead of the corrupt selfishness.

I'd love to see him hired to clean up roadkill off the highway, something he's at least qualified for.
What I'm betting is that Obama strings him along, promises him the moon to keep him voting his way, and then as soon as January is here drops him like a hot potato.

I just watched that three times and cannot for the life of me figure out what the FUCK she's talking about.
But then, this is the lady who once asked whether the Mars Lunar Rover was going to be able to get pictures of the flag our astronauts had left there.
(When I lived in Houston my dad liked to needle me about what "your congressman" was doing in reference to whatever babble this brain-damaged idiot happened to be spewing forth and I had to try to explain to him [usually through clenched teeth] that my congressman was Bill Archer, thank you very much.)

We have term limits in California and it made things worse (no, really). From the moment they get into office they're jockeying for the next job, and nothing at all matters to them past their exit date. California's finances really went off the rails very soon after we imposed term limits, and I'm convince part of the reason is legislators sincerely don't care if the state hits a wall as long as it happens after they time out.

I would support repealing the 17th, certainly. That would make the federal government a creature of the states again instead of the other way around.
The sixteenth I would have voted against in the beginning, but at this point repealing it would cause some pretty wrenching changes.
