— Jack M. You know what you call it when you interview one crank and make sweeping generalizations with no basis in fact?
Besides a MSM story about the Tea Parties, I mean.
You can call it a lot of things, I suppose. "Intellectually lazy" comes to mind. "Vapid" could apply. "Insulting" seems appropriate.
But what do you call it when you do the above while gratuitously inserting cult of personality passages designed solely to attest to the benevolence of the ruling cartel?
You call it "Propaganda". And today the Baltimore Sun's Jill "Pravda" Rosen reveals she certainly would feel comfortable asking you to believe that Kim Jong Il just finished his round 38 strokes under par. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. Who is Jill Rosen? And why are you punching down by deigning to cover some fluff piece in the Baltimore Sun? I mean is an article entitled "Parents Cutting Down on Easter Candy" really worth a blog post?
And I answer: Shut. Up.
No...I really answer: "Yes, it is." Because even though this is a nothing-burger of an article written by someone who is probably a recent graduate of journalism school and trying hard to be promoted to writing classified ads, it is revealing of many of the institutional biases that exist within the dominant media culture.
Look at me spouting all these big worded observations. Next week, I'm going to wheel out a "virtual chalkboard" and go all Glenn Beck-ish on your asses.
Let's break this story down, shall we? Pretend I'm that guy who does the 90 minute Star Wars reviews, except that I have known the touch of a woman.
MSM Trick Number One: Establish the Crank as the Relatable Lead Character:
When she was growing up, Jen Kitchen's Easter baskets were "always, always, always" brimming with candy - the foil eggs, the jelly beans nestled in synthetic grass, the sturdy chocolate rabbit.
She was your average all-American girl! So relatable! I think I really like this stranger of whom I've never heard of before. Please tell me more about her.
MSM Trick Number Two: Have the Crank Do Something Goofy to Pique Your Interest
But this weekend, her three young children will get nothing of the sugary sort in their baskets. No cream-filled eggs. Not one Peep. "Not even one little jelly bean," the Mount Airy mother says.
Wait? What? Are her kids being punished? What the hell is this? Is Jen Kitchen a complete bitch? There has to be more to this story than what we are being told...
MSM Trick Number Three: Make Something Most People Would Laugh At A Serious Statement of Principle, and, if possible, diminish Christianity as an added bonus
Instead, Kitchen's twins, who are almost 4, and her 2-year-old son will get baskets stuffed with movies, dolls and plastic eggs jingling with pennies. There will be soap bubbles and sidewalk chalk to encourage them to get outside and celebrate spring. And for snacking, she's tossing in granola bars, raisins and mini-boxes of Kashi cereal.
Kashi cereal? Really? Really? Hey folks...if you are one of Jen Kitchen's neighbors, I would advise you to steer you children away from her house on Halloween. She's obviously the one kook on every block that tries to force UNICEF pennies on your kids in lieu of sweet, sweet, tootsie rolls.
But what bothered me the most about this passage wasn't the ridiculous gifts that Jen Kitchen gives to her little kids. Truth be told, I don't really care what the heck she gives them. I don't know the brats. What hit me was Rosen's subtle redefinition of Easter.
Did you catch it the first time? Kitchen's children were being given "soap bubbles" and "sidewalk chalk" to commemorate not the Resurrection but to "celebrate spring". In poker, that's called a "tell." As in "I'm telling you, this Kitchen woman seems like a crank." Not that you would get that directly from the article championing her, though. You kinda have to read between the lines.
This year, parents like Kitchen are joining the food police and pulling something of a citizen's arrest on the Easter Bunny, seizing his candy and forcing him to reconsider his longtime gifts.
Parents? Really? How many besides Kitchen are doing this? How do you know that this is some kind of craze sweeping the nation? What evidence do you offer to show this isn't just the isolated action of some local goofball? Wouldn't you be able to measure if this were true by checking to see how candy sales are doing nationally? Do you have anything at all on which to base this contention on Miss Rosen besides your desire that it be true?
MSM Trick Number Four: Never waste a chance to kiss up to the regime. It might get you access down the road.
With the warnings on childhood obesity and first lady Michelle Obama's ever-present messages on healthy kids, more parents have apparently decided to pass on the sweets and start new, sugar-free Easter traditions.
How the hell did Michelle Obama get into this story? Did Kitchen cite Obama's "ever-present messages" as the source of her inspiration to ruin her kids Easter? You don't quote her doing that. And where are these "ever-present messages" anyway? I haven't seen any of them. I have seen a lot of Michelle Obama (Ed note: really, how can you not?) touting the need to donate to Haiti relief. But I'm pretty sure I've only seen a handful of news stories talking about "childhood obesity" stuff. Does a handful of mentions "ever-present messaging" make?
Probably not. But it makes it look like Americans are boldly responding to Michelle Obama's clarion call for immediate action. Which is exactly the point, isn't it Miss Rosen?
MSM Trick Number Five: Bury the Lede Because it's Inconvenient to the Story Narrative
The nascent health push, which has yet to put a dent in the nation's candy consumption, has candy makers unfazed.
And there you have it.....80% of the way down the article, the key measurement which could validate the entire premise of this article (Jen Kitchen is a one woman microcosm of Americans responding to Michelle Obama's leadership) shows the entire thesis to be.......bogus.
Nice work, Miss Rosen. You are truly a Seinfeldian reporter. You just wrote a whole article on nothing.
MSM Trick Number Six: Shift the Focus off of the Fact that the Narrative Arc of the Story is Badly Broken by bringing in an 'expert" to validate the writers emotional need to have it be true anyway
The article closes with some goofy "fat camp" operator talking about how many kids are fat and blah, blah, blah.
Im not gonna excerpt it (fair use and all that) but I've linked the Rosen piece so if you really want to see it you can.
The whole thing is just sad, really. Who would have thought that in the land of the First Amendment, you could learn more from reading around a news article than by reading it directly.

Was that before or after the TRO?
I don't load the boy's Easter basket up with sweets. First off, he's not that fond of them. Secondly, I get more bang for the buck giving him toys and games. But yes, there is the eternal chocolate bunny. Always.
Bottom line (for me) anyway, is that candy is expensive, at least as expensive as little toys and puzzles if not more so.

"Truth exists, The Incarnation happened." 5 words that sum up all history.
There has been a strong athiestic trend in all written stuff. Especially for kids.
Find one reference to God in an average modern cartoon or character for kids
Even Dora and Diego, the sterotype Hispanic, there is nothing remotely religious.Who hasnt been to a hispanic's house, and the mother has a shrine, full of statues and candles. Try and find that at her mother or grandmother's house.
and dont even get me started on Thomas, where the Reverend is mentioned as a beekeeper, and who rescues a steam tractor from the scrapper. But nary a prayer.
I think we need kids stuff with religion, if for nothing else but to piss off the liberals.

All through the script they're dropping F bombs and MF bombs. She comes in for her bit part as a pissed off mom, busts in the room and screams "Jesus Christ! What is wrong with you bastards?" Kind of related, in one of my classes in high school we had to read Devil in a Blue Dress. First we have to beat the turncoat Yankee West Virginians.
We're going to confuse them. Give them tooth brushes before the game with their mother, er sister's name on them.
Course they won't know WTF a toothbrush is, but someone at halftime will tell them.

See Communications Corruption at the White House. An excerpt:
Some journalists seem to be putting their self interest above their responsibilities to the public as well as their employers.
As Howard Kurtz and Glenn Greenwald have both commented, many White House correspondents and other top tier journalists want to write Obama books.
[...]
But the kind of books that sell need "inside access" and this is something that the communications team at the White House doles out minimally, and increasingly, only when favors are part of the arrangement.
What I have learned after discussions over the last several days with several journalists who either have regular access to the White House or are part of the White House press corps is that there is a growing sense that access is traded for positive stories -- or perhaps worse, an agreement that things learned will not be reported in the near term.
The White House is working hard to secure deals that yield fluffy, feel good commentary about the Obama White House. One American White House reporter used colorful terms to describe the arrangement. The reporter said, "They want 'blow jobs' first [in the press sense]. Then you have to be on good behavior for a bit or be willing to deal, and then you get access."
"Axe" and "Gibbs" know who needs access to get their books pushed forward.
They know who will pay for play -- and are taking notes on who has been naughty and nice in their reporting.
We've seen the level of actual propaganda (via Breitbart and Beck) this White House is distributing. It has nothing on Chavez except that it isn't using troops to shut down opponents yet. It's doing everything short of that. Meanwhile, Jean Rosen et al. gladly follow along hoping they'll get their piece of silver and join the Marxist class should it take hold.
We live in interesting dangerous times. Enemies aren't at the gate; they're manning it. The moron horde is going to need to keep punching down to emphasize the game and smoke out the truth. Well done, Jack M.

My mother was like that, bragging to my aunt about she never let us have sweet snacks, monitored our portions, etc. We're all fat as adults (except my anorexic sister), my cousins who got to eat whatever they wanted--including bucketloads of cookies and candy--are normal. Admittedly, my mother was pretty eating disordered--repeated Weight Watchers cultist, would buy Oreos in town and finish the bag off on the way home, hiding sweets in closets, etc.
This is why I look forward to Sasha and Malia's memoirs in about 25 years, after their gastric bypasses and years of therapy. Michelle Obama's creepy need to control other people's food intake while not controlling her own, and publicly shaming her children for being "fat" seem really familiar.

UT/Austin has had, since Abe Zilkha came in the early 70's, an excellent Hebrew department. You can take a decent series of Biblical Hebrew courses via the University of Wisconsin extension department.
I'm playing around with learning some Classical Greek right now. I took Russian at college, so there are some similarities. I bought the "Athenaze" course books. I'm going through the Cambridge course boioks on Latin right now, when I have some down time.

It seems to me that the Tea Party people are allowing themselves to be suckered by the MSM.
With the OJ Simpson jury and again with this healthcare legislation and with other issues, too, it seems to me that it is/was all about black people sticking it to whitey; i.e., specifically, WASPs.
But they're slyly turning it around and deceitfully projecting their own malevolence onto whitey; i.e., specifically, Tea Party people, accusing Tea Party people of being the racists, when, in fact, black people are the racists, who are again trying to stick it to whitey. Do you get my drift?
By not allowing criticism of black people on this website, Ace is playing right into the hands of blacks, again enabling them to stick it to whitey with impunity.

Anyway, I also sent some workbooks with stickers and some foil stars. My sister is a horrible speller, and my mother is a bad grandmother. I always had a feeling the twins would have trouble learning to read in public school. It was my hope that my sister would sit down with her children and help them learn to read and spell; maybe she would get it right herself the second time.
She just let them run around the house putting gold stars on everything. It really bothered me, and I tried to be really tactful as I said, "That's why you're fat and illiterate. The stars are rewards for when the children learn something or work hard. You don't get stars for nothing, and you don't let the kids run all over the house with them. Exercise some responsibility and sit down with your children and give them the love and attention you never got growing up." And it's true. My sister's eating disorder was her sad cry for attention. Nobody paid her any mind, and she moved out at seventeen.

As a company, I like Whole Foods a lot and have an undying loyalty that was forged by my roommate who moved from Denver when they opened a store here to work as the dairy manager. His boss was named Wendy, but she had a lesbian nickname tattooed to her knuckles. I forget what it was. But she teased the guys about staring at the lady shoppers' puckered nipples when they came through the cooler section. "Would you hit that? I'd have that bitch paying my rent." But I learned about the other perks of working at Whole Foods, as well.
It's just so inconvenient having to wait in line FOREVER just to get a few items. But I do my holiday shopping there. Except this year, I bought a bunch of stuff at the farmer's market already. I'm having huevos rancheros for brunch and orecchiette with brocolli rabe and sausage for dinner later.
Happy Easter, morons!
