Stanley Cup Final Game 5
— DrewM

On NBC now.

Even I'm thinking the Stanley Cup Final this late in the year is a little crazy. They really need to cut 5-7 games out of the regular season and wrap this puppy up before Memorial Day. File that under "Yeah but it'll never happen".

Anyway...If you're following the series it's been one of momentum swings. After 2 close games in Vancouver, the Canucks were up 2-0 and it looked like it might be a short series.

And then they went to Boston. After two Bruins ass-whoopings the series is tied at 2 but you'd think it was 3-0 Bruins.

The Canucks are a very, very skilled team that simply simply has no ability to stop the bleeding when things go bad. If they are controlling the game, very few teams in the league can play with them. But the second it starts to go bad...it just gets worse.

That's basically the story of their goalie Roberto Luongo as well. He was pulled in the last game after giving up 4 goals (he gave up 8 in Game 3). Watch for him to be on the proverbial short-leash tonight. If he starts to box the puck around and giving up big rebounds...the end is near for him, it's just a matter of time (shoot glove side kids!).

Also watch for the physicality of the Bruins. They are just beating the hell out of the Canucks. As a long series adds to an already long season it adds up.

I'm pretty sure I had the Bruins in 6 so, I'm liking this so far.

5 This is the best Finals I can remember... and I've been watching (and playing) for a loooooong time. The goaltender in me LOVES watching Thomas and Luongo duel it out. I'll be interested to see how Luongo holds up mentally after getting shellacked in the past two games.

Either the Vancouver Cauncks will win the Cup, or Tim Thomas will. Vancouver is deeper and more skilled than the B's, but Thomas is... well, he's Tim Thomas.

Isn't the problem really just that too many teams make the playoffs?

The Canucks are great to watch when they are on but their team identity is just so fucking unlikable. they can lose soon enough for me.

20 The Canadian fans always impress me with their national anthem. You'll never get an American stadium to sing the Banner the way those Canucks sing theirs.

I guess in Canada, it's still cool to be proud of your country.

Yeah, I'm going to start drinking.

I was going to go to a local theater tonight that allows you to bring beer, they are playing Shuan of the Dead tonight at 10, but I'm too pissed right now. So i'll just sit here, drink, and seethe in my own anger and disappointment.

Posted by: Troika37 at June 10, 2011 05:17 PM (eqTkp)

31 For the record, the Canadian singers sing the Star Spangled Banner usually around 65-70 seconds, while Rene (the Boston singer) sings it around 100 seconds. Very annoying to hear it sung so quickly.

Posted by: Uncle Joe at June 10, 2011 05:28 PM (Lq/Q9)

33 Chris: The Canadians just want to get the Banner over with and on to the one that 'counts' to them. I don't hold that against them.

Posted by: Troika37 at June 10, 2011 05:28 PM (eqTkp)

34 The Canucks are simply a different team at home than they are on the road.

Bruins have been the much more even keeled and consistent team this series.

Posted by: DrewM. at June 10, 2011 05:28 PM (sPao2)

35 Chris, one of the things that a lot of Canadian singers have told me is that there isn't really a clear rhythm to the Star Spangled Banner (I don't completely agree, but I can see where they're coming from)... many try to sing it as a march, and it's not really a martial tune. The other thing is, in Game 1, the guy singing it barely got through it (inventive pitches, running out of air, et cetera). I don't think it's a sign of disrespect so much as lack of confidence on his part. But yeah, O Canada is a lot easier to sing... I had the Canadian anthem at yesterday's Blue Jays @ Royals game, and there are no low or high notes in it unless you decide to add them.

I remember you mentioning that earlier this week. How'd it go?

37 That got sporty on both ends.

Great pressure by the B's. We saw that kind of puck possession v. TB but no yet this series.

Tim Thomas needs to consider staying in the same zip code of the net.

Posted by: DrewM. at June 10, 2011 05:38 PM (sPao2)

38 Pretty well. The Royals are sending me a DVD of it, and when I get it, I'll do a post with it... I've got both anthems for Sporting KC (the soccer team) in July. I felt real sorry for the color guard- the KCMO PD were out in their dark blue dress uniforms in 95-degree heat. That just sucks. In any event, the key thing is that the Royals won- nothing gets you uninvited back like the team losing. The Royals indicated they were interested in having me back this year- always a plus.

Posted by: tmi3rd at June 10, 2011 05:39 PM (WRtsc)

39 @37 yeah, it's definitely more "hymnal" than, say, a lifted raucous drinkin' tune. ... not that there's anything wrong with that

Chris, one of the things that a lot of Canadian singers have told me is that there isn't really a clear rhythm to the Star Spangled Banner

I don't think it's particularly a Canadian thing - I don't think a lot of people know just how to sing the Star Spangled Banner. As the notes go higher, the singers tend to go SLOWER, until it bogs down in a sort of loud sentimental howling. The song's in waltz time; you can march to it if you play it fast enough, and I think that's the main problem people have - they think that "important=slow". The tune is really catchy and spirited if you play it quickly.

Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at June 10, 2011 06:10 PM (jgkJo)

53 Dr. M, I totally agree... that's just what they've told me. When I do it, the main thing I try to remember is that the crowd's there to watch the game, not listen to me howl. Jim Cornelison with the Chicago Blackhawks makes it quite martial, and it's hard not to be fired up by the end of it. He definitely doesn't schmaltz his way through it.

54 Let's go, B's!

Posted by: Troika37 at June 10, 2011 06:17 PM (eqTkp)

55 The Bruins seem calmer than Vancouver at the moment, despite the pressure Vancouver's putting on... that said, Boston's making a few sloppy plays (like the first breakout pass going through the crease!) that make me a bit uncomfortable.

Posted by: Troika37 at June 10, 2011 06:28 PM (eqTkp)

60 Tactically, Vancouver is far and away the better team. Always on the move, always two or more around the puck, always with their players in position to support one another and intercept loose pucks.

Posted by: wolfwalker at June 10, 2011 06:43 PM (RSTJt)

61 That was a pretty entertaining game. Hopefully this goes 7. I'm not ready for hockey season to end yet. I had the pleasure of watching the game with my 2 year old niece. Her dad is a rabid Red Wings fan, and I have her clearly saying "Go Blue Jackets". I think I will wear a helmet when I take her home tomorrow.

63 Boston sucks. If they're not throwing dirty cheapshots and garbage between the whistles, they can't win. That's the only way they wear opponents down.

66 actually, the point I was making is that it is only obvious to the people here. I just had to tell my friend not to fill up her car until later in the week, to just put in enough gas to tide her over since gas prices have to come down since oil is going down. She literally had no idea.
