— Ace She didn't make the charge; a firm employed by her did. She's not commenting.
A conservative firm until recently employed by the Delaware primary campaign of conservative Christine O'Donnell against Rep. Mike Castle casually leveled an extraordinary — and unsupported — charge of a gay affair against Castle in a video posted to its website today, the ugliest salvo yet in an extremely bitter primary.
Walker said he had no compunction about repeating the rumor about Castle because "he's a threat to American sovereignty."He didn't offer any evidence for the claim.
She cannot win in Delaware, which is usually among the ten most Democratic states in the union. Allow me to be a little elistist -- what in this odd biography says "serious candidate for Senator"?
I was already predisposed to endorsing Castle, feeling this was a bridge too far (or a RINO too far), and then I recalled who Christine O'Donnell was -- she's a fill-in guest on Hannity and other talk shows. She has always grated on me, because she always seems pretty unprepared (or just not really a strong thinker), and tends to just repeat the same three or four obvious bullet-points.
If I have turned the channel off almost every time she's been on, I do not see how she is going to wear well in Democrat-stronghold Delaware.
When we were trying to get Scott Brown elected, some objected that he was a RINO. I said at the time: This is a gift from God. It is unseemly to look down one's nose at a gift from God and ask, "Couldn't you have gotten something better?"
I do not know why it is that Mike Castle is running 12 points or so ahead of his Democratic rival. It could be partly due to his despised RINOism, of course. And it's also due to personal characteristics which he alone possesses and cannot be transferred to O'Donnell -- like, as the state's only at-large Representative (the state has only one Rep.), he knows everyone in the state, has campaigned statewide nine times before. For whatever reason, the voters trust him, seem to like him. (Well, "like" as much as one can like a politician.)
For whatever reason, they've decided he's okay by them. And preferable to a Democrat. And so he polls 10-12 points ahead.
Meanwhile the latest Rasmussen poll puts O'Donnell ten points behind Coons.
And on that point, I ask, where is the plausible pathway to candidate growth? What is the realistic plan for getting O'Donnell up from ten points down to at least even?
Here's the trouble:
1. Ideologically, she is strident and hardcore. This means she's out of sync with Delaware. In 2008, Joe Biden trounced her (no one really wanted to run against him, except O'Donnell) 65%-35%, his largest margin of victory ever... and voters also sort of knew he wasn't even going to be Senator, he was going to be Vice President.
2. Often a compelling biography can make up for some mismatch here (like, Joe Miller's West Point, Bronze Star Desert Storm, Yale Law super-bio), but O'Donnell's is not only not strong, it's noticeably weak. I look at her bio and I sort of see my own. She might as well just say "Sketchy Blogger/Drifter" at the top of the page.
3. A new candidate can often be expected to grow into a good speaker and media-player as she learns the craft, just as a rookie quarterback can grow into the roll. But to the extent Christine O'Donnell has a job at all, it's speaking on FoxNews and CNN when they need someone last-minute. So she does in fact have experience, much more experience than your average neophyte politician. And I'm sorry to say, five or six years at this and she's simply bad at that job, and I cannot for the life of me imagine how she suddenly gets better when we need her to be better.
So where is the plausible pathway for growth? I don't see it. There are three critical areas for candidate success, and she is a... I hate picking on an underdog, and she's a nice lady and all that, but in all three areas she fails. Rather badly.
Now I'm not in love with Mike Castle. He supported cap and tax in the last go-round. That is one my Rubicons... almost my abortion issue, or my 2nd Amendment issue, if you know what I mean. One of my Big Ones. One of the things that get me going emotionally.
I'm not going to tell you he's not a RINO. He is. Straight-up, no chaser. He's a RINO.
But I also know that if he's elected, he votes for a Republican for control of the Senate. (A silly rumor undoubtedly peddled by O'Donnell's supporters notwithstanding.)
That is to say: We cannot win full control of the Senate without a Republican in this seat. This seat has long been one of the seats we were just assuming we would win. Because Castle has been comfortably out front for a long, long time.
This is not some longshot pick-up where it really makes little difference because we have no realistic chance anyway, so might as well swing for the fences. We have been counting this as an easy pick-up. When you read "Republicans will pick up at least 7 seats" this is number two or three on that list, after the gimme Arkansas pick-up.
And we're going to toss this away? For what?
She can't win. Period. So it has to be kept in mind, in doing political calculations: When you vote for her, you are not just voting for someone with a slightly smaller chance of prevailing in the general election. You are voting against someone with a 90% chance of winning in favor of someone with a 0% chance of winning.
Okay, maybe not zero; one can never say zero. Fine. 1%.
The vote for her would not be strategic, or aimed at a plausible victory scenario. It would be pure RINO-punishing (and cutting off one's own nose to spite one's face). If RINO-punishing is the only thing that matters -- and I stress: Castle is a RINO, and I sure the hell can't claim he doesn't deserve to be punished -- then vote for her.
If something more tangible than protest and punishment is sought, vote for the guy who's way out ahead of the Democrat. RINO or not. (And just to be clear-- RINO.)
Mike Castle will vote against us on 30% of stuff. You will not like him. I will not like him.
But I will like him better than the Democrat Coons, voting against us on 88% of stuff. And yeah, in a blue state, with a strong Democratic majority, he can afford to be one of the solid liberal votes for Obama's socialist agenda. Because he is not going to have to worry about losing his seat for voting too liberal.
The pathway to success is to change Blue to Purple, and Purple to Red, and Red to Even Redder. We are doing that. We are trading in RINO Murkowski for a Senator more in sync with a true red state.
But as we trade in, we can't move by more than one color. We can get a purple guy elected to a blue state, a red guy (like Angle) elected to a purple state, and a hooker's-lipstick-red guy elected to a red state.
We cannot get a super-red person elected to a blue state. Period. The anti-Obama factor gives everyone about an 8% bump. Add that to Christine O'Donnell's 35% (from last time) and she gets to 43%.
That's what we call a loss.
Strategically, we go easy on this one, we bank the sure thing and call it progress, because it is progress. If we gamble, we lose. It's not even a gamble. It's just tossing a stack of chips back to the house for no reason.
Uggh: This may be excusable. I know I wouldn't excuse it if she were a Democrat.
I won't lie and say this would be a huge campaign issue. It wouldn't be. But combine this with the "That's the rumor" thuggishness and it begins to paint a rather shabby picture.
So: Bio is out. Ideology is out. Media savvy is out.
Character is.... well, questionable.
What exactly will we be running on, I'd like to know.
That thanks to Gabe.

You are being insufficiently pure. You must adhere to all of the bedrock conservative principles, and hold all of those you support to all of those principles. How else can you remain on the outside, looking in on those who wield the power, and criticize them?

Sounds like she is trying to expand her credibility or noteriety by running for Senate in order to get more traction in the talk circuits, maybe.
If it's as you say, and I'm sure it is, sounds like a no brainer. We can afford to throw out RINO's in primaries when we have a strong majority. Doing so when we have a near minority is silly.

We got a real dildo Republican up here in MA smearing another Republican for the primary.
Joe Malone, former treasurer, has been doing a Will Folks-type character assassination of Jeff Perry: "I hate to do this...but...I heard...and people need to know...but it's not coming from me..."

The only thing that bothered me in this piece was the implication that you would not turn the channel if Hannity was the host.
My heart is troubled.
Other than that I agree. I don't understand how some people think it's possible to elect Righty McConservative in a blue state. Of course these are the same morons who think they might have sex with an actual woman some day if they just want it enough so there's that.

1. Where do I apply for my free subscription?
2. If we are to go this way, cancel the damn primary and spend the resources on keeping the Hiouse seat that Castle is vacating. As it stands now, the Delaware Republican party is doing what it often has done; ceding the seat, playing musical chairs with the Dems.
3. Castle has name recognition (lt. governor under Pete DuPont, then two terms as governor. With no media outlets except he Nes Journal (combine Gannett chain with provincial outlet; allow ingredients to rot in sun for several days. Serve with coupons). He has the backing of the party, hence access to money.

Waitafrigginminute.
A good politician can be an ardent conservative on all issues and win anywhere. If you know how to articulate your views and opinions, you can be successful anywhere.
What she did has nothing at all with being too socially conservative. What she did is nothing more than dirty politics.
Posted by: i got a gal in kalamazoo...zoo...zoo...zoo at September 02, 2010 07:22 AM (uFokq)
Plus, this is not some bright red state where we could dump a RINO (such as AK or UT) or run a conservative in a primary who had a decent shot of winning the general over a hand picked (by the RNC) RINO (see FL or the TX Governor race of KBH).
Also, so long as the NRSC stays as far away as possible, I may have to silently assent to this one and save my energy for getting non RINOs nominated in states where would have a decent chance of winning.
Posted by: eddiebear at September 02, 2010 07:22 AM (v1cQf)
Is it smart to elect a man who is likely to chuck away that advantage and soon? It would be better to get someone younger in that seat. I would liken it to Obama appointing Kagan. At any other time she doesn't get in but Obama knew things were going his way and went with it. The Rs should do the same. We can trust a little bit to luck here if it means a big payoff.

You say that as if we have a choice. The state party won't allow any other result. They trashed Janet Reznicki when she dared run against Castle in a primary for the House seat years ago. They supported him openly, tried to get her to drop, and then shunned her after that.

John Carney is running for the House seat. And he'll get it. Because the state party here has the same attitude as Ace and more; it's a Dem state, and don't seriously contest the Dems. What we see here is a bizarre exercise straight from summer camp. Everybody wins something, no one is challenged hard, and nobody questions their betters.
But John Carney cannot and will not 'whip anything'. He has no talent and no accomplishements to his name, and he's a liar. But he's a Dem, he has a pulse, he has name recognition, and the Republican party will not seriously contest him.

Barack Hussein Obama won big in 2008. Anything is possible. Obama was a great candidate. He somehow articulated all his radical leftwing views in a way that made him seem reasonable and moderate. He won NC and IN, for pete's sake!
Of course the difference between Reagan and Obama is Reagan wasn't fooling the electorate into voting for him; Reagan was sincere. Reagan can win in DE in 2010...if he was alive...and young.

That's the problem. Too many of the purity-minded just want to apply a simple algorithm. X is more conservative than Y. Support X.
Life is messier than that. The GOP hierarchy is probably reasonably conservative, but their judgment has been poor lately. Since they are paid to provide good judgment, people get angry. I like Scott Brown. I voted for him and I think he's a great guy. But he's not a conservative. What he is, though, is infinitely better than Ted Kennedy or Martha "Attack Craigslist"Coakley.
But, because of his win, there's a whole crop of good republican candidates running in MA now. Some of them are really good and -dare I say it- could perform some upsets nobody sees coming.
Not yet, but maybe at some future date, full-fledged conservatives may be able to run in MA and compete.

She's not a serious candidate. Anyone who can read a newspaper from '08 or any of her press releases can tell that. You don't really need to hold back. Think of the other bloggers who have bought into her nonsense in the service of teaching Castle a lesson. You know all those baseless accusations about Sarah Palin and policy and gravitas and all that garbage? Observation of her '08 campaign shows that O'Donnell is actually those things.
I know that it's not appropriate to attack fellow conservatives like this, but she isn't one of them. She's a con artist. I truly believe that.

You support the most conservative candidate in a primary that has a chance at winning the general.
Places like in UT and AK, we had RINOs in seats that should have been blood-red.
Places like here, and IL, you support the most conservative candidate who has a shot in hell at pulling out a general victory. Then you hope the caucus elects a fucking arm-twisting, knee-capping leader who will eat the guy's children if he votes the wrong way on major initiatives.
Polynikes, if you think this is inconsistency, well, you're a fucking idiot. And this is precisely the type of puritan bull shit we all went off on the other day.

If Castle is gone, we win, even if the Dem wins in Nov. The anti-incumbency fever spreading across this country is not just because of Dems. It's guys like Castle, especially, that hurts all Repubs. Let's get rid of him and his ilk and then at least the Dems will bear the brunt of voter animus in the future, if per chance O'Donnell beats him and loses in the General Election....we can't lose!

And . . . TTIWWOP.
I think Ace's analysis of O'Donnell's political viability misses the point that she keeps running for super-duper high office (U.S. Senator) without making her, em, "bones" by getting elected in a bid for a more modest office and working her way up through the party and learning that way. In her defense, I don't think there is much of a Republican party structure in Delaware considering party affiliation and the fact that most public office holders in Delaware - even if Democrats - have a more lax attitude towards business and regulation than is typical of national Democrats, thus siphoning off financial support that would otherwise inure to the benefit of Republicans.

Quite frankly, I'd rather have have a democrat win that race. That way, the Republican party, and by association Conservatives and Libertarians, can't be blamed for his screwups.
It is people like McCain, Kirk, Snowe, and Graham who screwed up so badly that they put us into this position where we now have a bunch of hardcore statists doing their best to ruin this country in the shortest time possible.
No, they AREN'T better than Democrats because they act just like them and destroy Conservatism in the process.

yes, we have tried to discuss what matters to us as voters. And again, we are told that some social issues are "puritanical bullshit". Presumably fiscal issues are not. Except that Castle voted for Cap and trade. He also has an 'F' rating from the NRA. And as a Senator, he would be one of those confirming a Supreme Court nominee, who decide more than "puritanical bullshit" issues.
Finally, remember how we got Obamacare. The Maine sisters and Specter enabled that. You know, the ones that "we were lucky to get, given where they're from and the circumstances that we grown-ups know all about".
Looking ahead two years from now, will we revisit this, when cap and trade is the law of the land because Castle was building his eco-cred legacy, like former Gov. Peterson did here? I doubt it.

Me too. Because Cap and Trade is not going to be the law of the land. Ironically, the reason is because of Democrats from coal producing states.
I'm not sure I understand the logic of saying the guy isn't right on all the issues so lets elect a Democrat who is wrong on all the issues and won't help us get a majority. A senate seat once won is more times than not a lifetime appointment or at least good for 2 or 3 terms. Is it easier to take a Republican who wavers on certain issues and pull him into the fold when the trend is going to the right or flip a Democrat on all issues?

Bloomberg will endorse a string of politicians running in races across the country, including Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak, Republican Senate candidate Mike Castle, and Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, another Democrat.
The mayor's appearance on the campaign trail comes as his passionate defense of building a mosque near Ground Zero garners national attention. Bloomberg's first stop was a scheduled morning appearance in Philadelphia to endorse Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak, who is running for Senate.
"In deciding to throw his support behind Joe, Mayor Bloomberg cited the independent, pragmatic mindset that Joe will bring to solving problems in the Senate — much like he did in the military — and Joe's approach to putting Americans back to work," the campaign said in a statement. Sestak has also spoken out in support of the mosque.
Bloomberg will return to New York to hold a fundraiser for Delaware Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Mike Castle, the Wall Street Journal reported.

All those arguments and poll numbers are merely CW (conventional wisdom), but this year is an anomaly.

You are suggesting (perhaps inadvertently) that people chiefly oppose her due to her "questioning the leadership of the party." I like that part of it.
The parts I don't like are most of the other stuff. Ideologically, she's good by me, but I don't get how she can win with that profile. On other parts, she's just a really bad candidate.
This is not just some impulse to defend the status quo and crush the "newcomers and independents."

There was a difference there. Miller could win.
Posted by: ace
I'm gratified to hear that. Please note the example I provided above. The party here is infamous for what I've described. Janet Reznicki might be a national name by now, but for the party. I worked for her, despite her being pro-abortion. She had good ideas for running the state and its finances, and an amazing rapport that reached across party lines; which is vital here. But that was cast aside.

I categorically reject Ace's proposition (oft repeated) that in State X the best we can ever hope for is a liberal republican because the state is just too blue. Having met both, you are two for two. Ace does raise valid points in that on the face of it, her positions place her to the right, while Castle is agreeably malleable( to the Delaware voter). The primary is moot at ths point. Her campaign may be self-destructing, and the state party is likely to remain distant even if she wins.

This is crazy. O'Donnell's bio suggests nothing more than an opportunistic grifter who plays the gender card to cover up for running a for-profit business from her desk at ISI and getting caught. And now resorts to really despicalble campaign tactics against a fellowRepuiblican, violating Reagan's 11th Commandment.
Plus, there's no way she can win.
No-brainer... elect Castle and then try to influence him as much as possible, but at least with him conservatives will have some influence. And in the unlikely even there are 51 GOP senators come January, he'll vote with teh GOP to organize teh Senate.
This ain't rocket surgery.

Different dynamic. The Republican candidate had no name recognition, a gambling scandal and no cash. He was the guy who got the nod because no one else wanted it. Plus it was a one issue election, the war. If he had been even as good as Christine O'Donnell then Ned Lamont would be a Senator today.

Have you seen Castle's ads on this site? We'll wait. he's hauling off on a 'fellow republican' and will expect, no, demand that that be forgotten once he wins. And he'll get it.

This is a DIABLO liberal who voted FOR crap and tax and who has voted with Dems 80% of the time. In order to purify something first you have to have something to make purer.
I don't favor the O'Dennell either for all the reasons Ace stated. What I favor is everyone spend their money and efforts in other races where we have a chance of getting a net plus.
We have already lost this race. We can't win because it is heads they win, tails we lose.

Thank you.
This wouldn't bother half as much as the fact that the party here is kissing off the House seat. This, during an expected wave year, where party identification is at a record level of difference. And this stinking little state only has two national offices up for grabs this year. We're talking about re-taking the House and in Delaware we're handing off the seat. Watch what happens. You'll se the republican candidate descend to token status. Against a placeholder whose only achievement was avoiding being devoured by his boss (Gov Ruthann 'no-neck' Minner). She isn't quite as thin as Christine. (think 16" shell).

Nope. If true, and if the allegations have merit, that's a huge problem. Please note that the local rag holds no love for any republican, especially one that dares to be pro-life. The fact that this is being aired now smacks of opportunism. In this same environment, the late Sen. Roth was subjected to attacks daily. if this had any tarction, I would have expected the 'News' Journal to trumpet this from the rooftops.

I did a quick search and found some related info on Delaware Tomorrow - July 29, 2010 and June 17 editions. (I'm not posting the links because I don't feel like tinyurling or hreffing.)
O'Donnell never received a diploma from Fairleigh Dickinson because she owed the school money. I don't know if she's ever referred to that factoid about her background. There is reference to two unpaid debts from her 2008 campaign, one to a worker, for 500 bucks or so, and the other debt in the amt. of $2000, also campaign related. According to the DE Tomorrow articles, she did not abide by Financial Disclosure requirements expected of candidates in your state.
I first heard about these bad debt issues on local talk radio, many months ago. Maybe the local rag isn't beating her up over it because they think Castle is a foregone conclusion.

If we win all the Senate seats I think we can (10-13), you combine those freshmen with the Jim DeMint caucus and I'm not so sure McConnell is Senate Majority leader.
I would bet he is, just because no one wants to start a term with drama and dissention... but.... I don't know. He's not lighting the world on fire, and so many of his candidates and allies were defeated.
Posted by: ace
Hmmm.
It's a cheerier thought than voting for Castle. Do you think that a DeMint, fresh off a triple digit win could seize the crown?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for writing what I have been trying to get across in the comments for weeks now. O'DONNELL IS A JOKE OF A CANDIDATE. I have read the "Mike Castle is a RINO" bullshit all day long, but this should make obvious, even to the most ridiculous Tea Partier, that O'Donnell is not a viable candidate. Castle, unlike O'Donnell, will win the general election and Castle, unlike Coons, will not be a rubber stamp for the Obama agenda. Yes, he is a little more liberal than I would like, but he votes with the Republicans a majority of the time.
If the Tea Party Express goes ahead with their ad buy here, instead of using the money to help candidates that can actually win, like Rand Paul, they deserve to lose any and all credibility they have.

I know many people who had to wrangle with colleges over debts, especially in the fee and loan filled world. That could stem from several things
Financial disclosure violations are serious, in and of themselves, and because we see Dems treat them like Sheryl Crow treats toilet paper.
Old debts from prior campaigns also aren't new, but then they are still serious. We've seen how that can get distorted, especially when 'sacred honor' is at stake.
What sticks with me is that the local rag never misses the chance to fire off on a republican candidate. This is the paper whose star columnist (Barney Frank) gleefully accused ALL wives of airmen at Dover AFB to be whores. They are what passes for class here.

His successor, Jim Himes, is about to have his ass handed to him by a guy 10X as Conservative as Shays would ever allow himself to be. I don't remember Shays ever being with us alot either. He would vote R till what he wanted got put in the bill and then cave. But there was never a question of him caving. You don't get endorsed by the NYT as a Republican over a Liberal Democrat by being with the Republicans a lot. It was worth 2 years of Jim Himes to get Dan Debicella any day.

I thought when I moved out of Philadelphia that I had seen the last of those disgusting creatures. Not so. I was at the Starbucks in Chadds Ford, when I saw a rat scurry out of the lovely planting bordering their sidewalk cafe. I told the manager and they were not in the least impressed. Since then I've become acquainted with what rat traps look like. I see them around the hoity toity "shoppes".

1. For the same reason that Castle resorted to the ads that I see right now on this site.
2. Because he has the party behind him and she does not
3. He is better placed, both within the party and by being a current officeholder.
The nice thing about this country, and this site, is that you get to see the terrible ratings that Castle received. You also get to se unsettling allegations regarding O'Donnell. You can then make up your mind for yourself.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
