Stimulus Watch : $800K Spent On Teaching African Men To Wash Their Junk
— LauraW

Well, at least the money wasn't wasted

This is how your government spends money when we are teetering on the brink of disaster.

If most of the men in the study wash their genitals after sex, are willing to do so after the study ends, and report that their partners accept the regimen, the researchers will develop another study to see if the “penile cleansing procedure” actually works to prevent HIV infections.

Just from a female perspective; how about having them wash before sex, too? What could it hurt, right?

And it's not clear what 'their partners' acceptance' refers to. It could mean that these sexual partners are going to learn to follow the same cleansing procedure, in which case we can safely assume these are gay couplings.

Or is it presumed that these are women, who for some reason might not approve of their partner's hygiene regimen?

Either way, and, most importantly, why should the US taxpayer give a rat's ass?
It's not like we aren't already sending an ass-ton of aid to African nations. We are.

My God, people, let's get serious here. People are out of work, and businesses are dying all around us; just ship them some instructional diagrams and a couple cases of Zest and let's be done!

If you go to the article, don't miss out on how the researchers explained why they were justified to receive tax money for this unproductive busy-work. Right at the end, there.
You'll like it. It's good.

Thanks to Krukke1.

55 Project Number:       3U01MH066701-07S1
Principal Investigator:       COATES, THOMAS J.

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): NOT-OD-09-058: NIH Announces the Availability of recovery Act Funds for Competitive Revision Applications

We propose to evaluate the feasibility of a post-coital genital hygiene study among men unwilling to be circumcised in Orange Farm, South Africa. Men in high prevalence settings could potentially benefit from improved genital hygiene if this intervention proved to be efficacious in reducing HIV acquisition risk.

articipants will be asked to practice immediately post-coitus or at least 12 hours after. The feasibility of a prevention RCT with an alternating intervention design on the effect of post coital penile hygiene on HIV incidence among young males in South Africa will be substantiated if the procedure is acceptable, is deemed convenient and practicable by the target population, and if adherence is high. The outcomes of interest are: 1. Proportion of volunteers able to be trained to perform the penile cleansing procedure. 2. Proportion of participants reporting adherence to early post coital penile cleansing. 3. Proportion of participants reporting adherence to delayed post coital penile cleansing. 4. Proportion of participants favorable to the practice of the post coital penile cleansing procedure. 5. Proportion of participants reporting partner's acceptance of the practice. 6. Proportion of participants' adherent to the post coital penile cleansing during study follow-up as assessed by penile swabs analysis.

74

Paul Theroux, in his book Dark Star Safari (a very good, if sad, book about the African plight), writes of how many African men prefer "dry sex": i.e., they prefer their female partners to be unlubricated. This of course causes vaginal tears and penile abrasions, which facilitates the spread of HIV. African men also tend to view promiscuity as a male perogative -- they view potency with many women as a sign of male power. This of course translates into high rates of infection among populations. Combine this with the tribal honor/shame ethic (especially where AIDS is concerned), and you get a horrendous problem.

And it's probably a problem that only Africans can solve. They understandably resent being told by outsiders that their sexual habits are killing them. Decades of unrest, lousy government, and total moral collapse have not helped things. NGO's have really exacerbated the problem in many ways by allowing Africans to defer the consequences of their own behavior.

It's really sad to think that Africans are mostly far worse off now than they were 50 or 60 years ago under colonial rule. Zimbabwe (Rhodesia as was) could stand as a symbol for the whole sub-Saharan region.

First of all... why the fuck would it even stop HIV? That's idiotic. "Oh, do you have a condom?" "No, it's OK, I'll soak my nuts in antibacterial soap after I screw you"

Why not have them stand upside down on the toilet or something?

Second of all - Get them to do it, THEN look into whether or not it's even worth doing?!?

Third of all - No. I'm taking a nap.

You know.. No shit... THIS MORNING I got an email from a client that they are postponing a project.

They are postponing the project because business has gotten slow in an unprecedented way.

And they looked into it, and it turns out business has gotten slow in an unprecedented way because government (I don't know if it's local, state or fed) is subsidizing their competitors who are undercutting them severely on price (Like - "Free").

So now they've postponed their expansion, and are looking in to whether or not they can get in on the program.

I would say that African men know how to wash their junk much better than the "Afro-American" men in the urban areas do. And that folks is based on watching a side-by-side interaction between American blacks and African blacks in a  pub in Mombassa, Kenya. (but not washing their junk)

What everyone knows about sending money and aid to Africa is that for every dollar sent 2 cents may get to the people who it is actually intended for, except for the case of that done by the churches.

In those cases the money goes to local missionaries who distribute the aid. When the government distributes aid it goes to what ever "leader for life" is currently in charge.

Dear? Would you hop down to the croc infested river and fetch me a bowl of ball wash?

Good point! Washing your balls in africa probably contributes to the spread of HIV.

Either that or like amoebial infection or something. God damn protozoa and blowfish that swim up your peehole and shit. Plus your washing your junk in the same river that dude is washing his junk, which is the same river that wilderbeat is washing it's junk in.

This is why pre-industrial people drank ridiculous amounts of booze and bathed infrequently.

Bad water will kill your ass.

105 The money wasn't spent to get African men to wash their tackle. It was spent to put a half-dozen loyal Democrat voters into $100,000+ a year jobs.

The sad part is those researchers would vote Dem even without the cash 'cuz Republicans are "anti-science" cousin-humpin' mouth-breathin' stoopid-heads.

106 The experimental design consists of asking about a personal hygiene practice (very low confidence response) related to sexual behavior (another very low confidence response) and verifying that via a sample collected (in a medical setting, I hope) some significant number of hours later. Some data (again very low confidence) on whether or not participants liked it is thrown in the fluff (sorry) up the page count. Regardless of the value of the work to the American people; how did this "study" get past a basic review committee - it is unlikely to produce anything of value beyond some frequent flyer miles for the researchers.

I once spent a month in Malawi, Africa on a self funded mission trip.  On the South African Airlines flight over, I met several university professors and researchers on their way to an HIV/Aids conference.  They were all booked at the fanciest hotel in Lilongwe...the only 4 star hotel really...and were not self-funded.  They were all from different universities, but all knew each other from being in the same field, reading each others "research"...it was like a bunch of old friends re-uniting for a trip in Vegas, except with a lot more pretentious b.s.

I'll never forget the conversation between two HIV researchers in the row in front of me.  One of the goals of the past conference was to "train" African nurses and doctors to use disposable latex gloves.  Much of that years funding had gone to provide gloves.  In the year since, it had apparently become obvious that the idea of disposing of perfectly good latex was unacceptable to these people, and they of course used them over and over again no matter how much training our intellectuals gave them.  The latex gloves also began being used more often as bladders to carry water than for medical use.

On the other hand, while in Malawi, I learned of the ancient customs and traditions in Malawi regarding sexual superstitions that often led to disease.  For example, when a woman becomes widowed, a relative or other men in the village must sleep with the widow.  There were literally men whose job it was to go around sleeping with (raping, really) women for all sorts of superstitious reasons.  While in a rural church, during what was called "visioning time", men from the village spoke up about their various "visions".  Nearly every "vision" was in fact a sexual fantasy of the man, such as "I had a dream last night that "x" and "y" women from the village laid down with me together", and the pastor would then explain how this "vision" was from God and must occur.

In other words, there were far more large and basic cultural and moral issues to deal with.  But the judgement of morality was apparently not politically correct to these wise, grant-funded elites, so they focus on latex gloves and washing junk.  And enjoyed the nice pool, restaurant and casino at the 4 star hotel on public and grant monies to do it.

I was about to post the same thing-- that women use products like alum, even potash which only results in more damage. Sex in Africa is about as bad as bad sex can get any where on the planet.   If you're female, your body is pretty much wrecked by the time you're 30 between being a pack animal, brood mare and the resultant fistulas.   AIDS is just another end result.   So the 'washing' issue is a minor drop in a big bucket of misery.

The had to investigate his divorce records, his tax records and as I recall there might have been some results to those efforts. For whatever it is worth, disease is no doubt rampant in Africa.

But I have heard a lot of people claim that AIDS is no where near as prevalent as it is claimed to be, and their misdiagnosing left and right with these supposed statistics (which, I've seen sometimes claim that 1/4 of the entire population of Africa has AIDS).

Which seems to me to be very sensible and plausible.

Because they're not ALL DEAD.

Which, being as disease ridden as they are in general, I would think they ALL would be by now if a 1/4 of them had the AIDS 10 years ago.

Like... ALL of them.

If you've got AIDS, all your kids have AIDS. There's no way out of that one. And in Africa AIDS probably means quite dead rather abruptly. It strikes me that if AIDS was as rampant as claimed, the place would have long since been a ghost town by now.

141 There are bigger problems in Africa ... One is the Liberal imposed ban on DDT which allows malaria to kill about 1.5 million African childern most under the age of 5. A travesty if there ever was one, the misery of malaria is it.

Search on "dry sex africa" and see what you come up with.  Apparently, the men like the friction in a dry vagina and the women, not having a whole lot of options, permit this.  Needless to say, because of vaginal abrasions, it increases the rate of HIV transmission.  I don't think persuading the men to bathe is going to solve this problem.  Given the number of mistaken beliefs and cultural opinions involved in this practice, I don't see it changing any time soon.

All the ladies repeat after me:  "Aaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee."  Also, "Ouch."
