Here's an Ann Coulter column linked because of one perfect line.

He didn't tell, but it looked like clumpy flour.

The grease keeps it from flowing freely. I wonder if adding something like cornstarch would help keep the bacon particles separate long enough for them to distribute somewhat evenly over the fries.

Speaking of. Ladies, I occassionaly run across a type of woman, who I can describe most affectionately as "trailer trash". Sometimes they have risen above but still retain their original feathers. Here is my question: How does one get the volume of mascara on that these women wear? Are those false eyelashes and mascara or do they have some kind of mascara or tool that I don't know about or do they use a mop? I marvel, and yet, I am confused.

@17: "Funny, our town just switched this week to a garbage company where you *don't* separate your recyclables anymore."
In Soviet Monica, we just have these incredible SmartTrux garbage trucks. We have to separate our garbage into multiple cans. Then a single truck comes along and picks up all of the sorted stuff from the different cans and dumps it all into one bin, where it apparently gets re-sorted again. A technology so advanced as to be indistinguishable from magic.....

Just asking, but when has 9/11 ever been nonpolitical? It seems like 10 minutes after it happened people were calling it a Republican conspiracy. Everything Bush did that day has been fodder, Farhenheit 9/11 was a major lefty movie. After 9/11 every action that Bush took was howled over, even the rebuilding of the towers has been a massive political fuck up. Was it just me or did the Dems scream that Bush was politicizing 9/11 after anything was proposed that they didn't like?
Was it non political then because a Republican was president and it's unfairly political now that a Democrat is president?

Another famous Liberal Orthodoxy is theft. A government that can steal as much as possible with layers and layers of confiscatory taxes, fees and restrictions and government regulations -- is a government that steals liberty.
Then when the economy inevitably falls apart, that same government blames and lashes out at everyone else.
No introspection, whatsoever.

I would say it was apolitical for about 9 months. Everyone realized that Clinton had f'ed up, but Bush wasn't interested in that - he was interested in responding to the act of war by the Islamists and he was willing to reach out across the political spectrum.
The left continued to attack him on domestic issues, but most of them agreed with Bush's foreign policy.
They figured that Bush's election was a fluke. They'd make sure the public knew they weren't old time pansy liberals - they were more like FDR willing to rain fire down on those who attacked America. And no one wanted Republican domestic policies.
Then the election of 2002 happened. Americans though Bush was doing pretty well - he cleaned up Clinton's messes after all - and awarded the Republicans with relatively big gains in Congress.
The Democrats were shocked. This moron that cheated his way to victory was more popular then they were! This began a sea change in the Left's views on the WoT that would not finish until after the 2004 election.
All of the left, not just the far left, started descending into Alex Jones/Lyndon LaRouche territory (note LaRouche is the source of the Cheney evil mastermind meme).
By the start of 2005, the left saw Bush as a bigger threat then Bin Laden and the 2004 election as worse then 9/11.

I seem to recall a few of the big media talking heads congratulating themselves for not showing the true horror of 9/11. Again because we the people couldn't take it apparently - we'd go out and attack the nearest Muslim/arab.
Of course the irony is that the public saw full well the horror of the Pearl Harbor attack - over and over again - and it was the government of sainted FDR that then went out after innocent people of asian decent.

Friend of mine was working across the street from the WTC on 9/11 and had just stepped out of the subway station when the first plane hit. He stayed a long time -- he still can't talk about what he saw.
I happened to be in NYC on business that day and at 8:45 AM was on a shuttle bus to LaGuardia Airport. When we came out of the Midtown Tunnel, the driver told us that a plane hit the WTC (we figured a commuter plane lost control). We could see the smoke from one of the towers. A few minutes later, we went over a rise and I looked again -- I couldn't figure how the fire had jumped from one tower to the other.

Here's the confusion: the Arabic word "Islam" contains the same three-letter combination as "salaam," the Arabic word for peace. It's linguistically related to the Hebrew word "shalom," peace.
BUT...
... the literal meaning of "Islam" is submission, obedience. Fundamentalist Islam is only peaceful in the sense that its followers must give up critical thinking and become sheep, submitting to the will of Allah without thought, reservation or question. That level of devotion is held up as an ideal under Jewish and Christian thinking as well, but not to the point that the believer is supposed to stop thinking for himself.
Fundamentalist Islam also demands that everyone submit to it in one way or another. That is, if you are a believer or become a believer by conversion, you can find the peace of the flock.
If you are one of the other People of the Book -- Jew or Christian -- you can submit to the yoke of Fundamentalist Islam without converting if you agree to pay the jizya tax and follow the laws of your Islamic rulers; if you don't submit, Fundamentalist Islam cannot tolerate your existence: you must convert or die. If you are an unbeliever -- a follower of a god or gods other than Allah/Jehovah or of no god at all -- Fundamentalist Islam cannot tolerate your existence: you must either convert or die. And that's another kind of peace: the peace of the grave.
So Fundamentalist Islam is a true religion of peace: the peace of the flock or the peace of the grave. Anyone not willing to become part of the former must be made part of the latter.

In the documentary "9/11," made by two French filmmakers who happened to be shadowing some FDNY firefighters that day, there is the footage of the firefighters in the entry hall to one of the towers reacting to the SLAM! SLAM! SLAM! of jumpers hitting the roof.

I've been to all of them. B&N is best by far. Although way way back in the early 70s there was a huge non-chain bookstore in SF that was the best that I have ever been in.
I don't remember the name of it and besides it is probably gone now anyway.

BAM is good, little cheaper, I always thought they had more of a rightie bent, less of the Obama/commie push in their titles. One thing I hate is the hard sell of the BAM member's card every time you buy a book.

The Billy Wilder movie Ace in the Hole (also called The Big Carnival) starred Kirk Douglas as a down-on-his-luck reporter using a dramatic rescue situation to his advantage -- manipulating it for the highest possible readership of his exclusive dispatches to the newspapers. Nice to see these a-holes getting used in the reverse direction.

But really, Amazon is the way to go unless you really need the book the same day.

We're also:
- Commemorating the horrors and heroes of 9/11
- Celebrating the feminine mystique as expressed through feminine hygiene products
- Discussing football
- Exploring the dark side of Islam (yes, there is a sliver of light there as well)
- Comparing book-buying experiences
So it's a pretty lively and rich environment.

And the cafe downstairs serves the patrons from upstairs. As their daily special.

My 11 housemates are smart and funny and good companions. The place runs like a machine (the whole system is based on principles from Heinlein) and the despots at the top of the chain are surprisingly benevolent.
I'm ahead of the game on my reading, and have not yet embarrassed myself in class. I was sad to learn that I will never use (or even think about) any of the upper-level math courses I took last year.
I got my voter registration notice today. Eagerly awaiting my first vote. (Arrived too late for PA's primary, back in April. Moved away before NY's primary, Tuesday.) The libs/Dems/radicals know they're toast, so they're curiously quiet. Even the loons are just going through the motions. Nobody is feigning excitement and joy. My congresscritter is Chakah Fattah, a D shoo-in. I will enjoy pulling the Senate lever for Toomey.
I signed up to poll watch an evening shift. I specifically requested 12th and Fairmount, which should be the safest and best-behaved polling place in the state this year. Unlike 2008.
It will be weird to NOT be in NYC tomorrow. My high school has an event every year. Considered going up, decided to let others keep the flame for a while. Since I plan to live forever, I realized there will come a year when I'll be the last witness. But not this year.

Noticeably absent from President Obama's latest economic-stimulus package are any further attempts to create jobs through "green" energy projects, reflecting a year in which the administration's original, loudly trumpeted efforts proved largely unfruitful. The long delays typical with environmentally friendly projects - combined with reports of green stimulus funds being used to create jobs in China and other countries, rather than in the U.S. - appear to have killed the administration's appetite for pushing green projects as an economic cure.
