So what do you do?

GimpelÂ’s solution to all of this: There is none, at least not anytime soon. Nominating Latino candidates doesnÂ’t seem to help Republicans (Ted Cruz lost the Latino vote in his Senate race two years ago, even in deep-red Texas), nor does taking different positions on illegal immigration. The only thing to do is Â… wait.

Wait a generation or two for low-skilled, Democratic-voting immigrants to have kids who grow up to become middle-class independents and then youÂ’ve got a shot. In the meantime, gulp.

There is one possible solution, but it relies entirely upon external events: If something happens to discredit progressivism (such as a new recession) to make immigrant populations actually begin to doubt their preferred big government, big spending solutions, there's hope of a realignment.

But that, of course, is entirely outside our control.* It's basically hoping for a Miracle (though a dark one).

* Except, of course, for our ability to sabotage the economy by speaking badly about it and hoping for Obamacare to fail.

Progressives have long asserted that prayer doesn't work, except in the case of conservative "prayers" for a failing economy and failing Healthcare.gov, in which case "prayer" works wonders and changes the world.

4 You know, all through the last recession (2008 and beyond) I couldn't believe they kept pushing amnesty and more immigration, while the unemployment rates were sky high. But they kept on pushing anyway. Now that the rates are going down, what is the chance that they will stop pushing? None. Hell, even if we have another recession, I don't see how that would stop them for pushing for amnesty and immigration.

14 Yeah, it's hoping for a miracle. Tightenting up immigration policy can help. If you examine other country's policies, it is really hard to get into the country unless you bring value. Degrees/experience needed, hard to fill jobs, etc. And, it's not cheap in other countries to apply. They filter in what they need.

The problem is that failure doesn't teach any lessons to them, except that evil Republicans and conservatives got in the way and caused all of that.  Nothing I've seen makes me believe they are capable of stringing together cause and effect.

It will never happen.  Immigrants now come to our Country not because its the land of opportunity but because its the land of entitlements  when opportunity does not pan out.    

Instead of  them  being forced  to assimilate ,  we are forced to accomodate. 

 

Until entitlements are reduced and assimilation is required to survive,  immigrants will remain  2 to 1  Democrat.

126 Sean Trende has already written a piece that shows that the math in the Politico article is wishful thinking for the Dems.  Based on historical data on immigrant voting patterns, the Dems might net 20% of what the Politico article is claiming and most of that in states that are won overwhelmingly by one side or the other already.  Adding more Dem votes in California or New Jersey ain't no real big deal. 

I'm of the opinion that the Dems would rather have the issue of conservatives being able to be portrayed as assholes about Mexicans to sway mush-minded middle-of-the-road white voters, rather than actually pass immigration reform and net a few more Latino votes in states they already were going to win anyway, and have the Republicans peel off the aforementioned white voters by not being seen as "mean" about Mexicans.

But, do let's all play to stereotype and bite on the Politico article as evidence that the RINOs are all going to "sell us out."

127 California is a good barometer. Canada is as well. Up until the mid 60s, Canada was essentially the US, with more hockey and moose. Politically it was a very conservative country. Low taxes, private health care, anyone could own a gun, etc. Then something happened in the 1960s. After 100 years of immigration almost exclusively from the British Isles and Western Europe, immigration laws were changed to actively discourage immigration from those areas and encourage immigration from Asia, Southern/Eastern Europe and Africa. And by the late 70s/early 80s, Canada had govt run health care, an effective ban on guns, some of the highest taxes in the world. It took less than 20 years to completely change teh country and it was 100% due to immigration...LEGAL immigration.

157 @136  The same thing about states is true for most CDs, though.  The immigrants are going to move to neighborhoods that contain like folks.  There isn't going to be a rush of Mexicans living in areas that are not already populated with Mexicans.  So, a few CDs get more Dem than they already are.  Immigrants move to immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, particularly if they don't know the language and need job connections.

That's been the case throughout American history and it is the case today.

So what I'd be told as a newly arrived Hispanic immigrant in the USA would be that there are Party D and Party R.

There is a reason there are so few competitive CDs.  It is neither party's interest to have a bunch of 50/50 CDs.  Costs too much money to contest every two years.  Both parties prefer stasis and will draw CD boundaries in such a way as to keep stasis.  IAC, Trende makes the point in his article that when you break the numbers down according to actual historical data on immigrant voting patterns, in the state with the most undocumented immigrants, Nevada, Obama would have netted out another 17,000 votes.  Big whoop.  So his margin goes up a point and a half.

The Dems want the issue, not the voters.  The voters only pad the margin they've already got in these states but the issue turns moderate whites and young voters off the Republican party.  And there are a hell of a lot more already existing moderate white voters to be persuaded than any amnesty would create new Latino voters.  the issue is what they want and some on our side are more than delighted to play the part of nativist bigot and give them that issue.

It's kind of funny that when I go into a Vallarta (Mexican themed supermarket chain in Southern CA, with really good produce, deli, and butcher departments) store, none of the shoppers look anything like the celebrities on the covers of the Spanish language magazines by the registers.

One thing that I haven't considered is that they (he and his wife) don't speak much English, even after 35 or 40 years here, and they watch Spanish language TV and listen to Spanish radio, so their media sources are limited.


The kids (all over 35 now), however, are a mixed bag. Some quasi-conservatives. Kind of LIV in knowing what's going on except for the 'noisy' issues like gay marriage, etc.

There is nothing...   absolutely nothing you can do to save the country from becoming just another fkd up socialist state.

The US is corrupt, the government is nothing but a corrupt, crony operation that takes your money and gives it to an increasingly rich and smarter class of people who know how to Fk you out of it.

And, it is not Democrats or Republicans. They are all the same... they just activate "their" side by getting people all riled up about the other side while they rake in the $$$ millions no matter who is in charge...   i.e. Karl Rove - Soros - Podesta - Romneys, Clintons, Bushs and Kennedys, etc.

In order to keep the whole scam going, the government/fed just keeps printing worthless dollars and eventually the whole thing will collapse.

My advice - buy some land in the country, buy a lot of guns and ammo, learn how to grow vegetables and how to raise and slaughter livestock and hope you die of old age before the people from the city come to take your stuff.

Its called the Decline and Fall of an Empire.... happens all the time... over and over in history. And this time, nothing will change that.

After all, we are still the same failed humans we have always been.
