— Ace The deuce you say! But I heard him say ten times he would never run as an independent!
Check out the AP's headline, which casts Crist's self-serving, vow-breaking decision as a heroic stance against DC insiders:
Ignoring DC pressure, Crist mulls independent run
"Ignoring pressure" from the DC establishment? Affirming his "independent" integrity? And here I thought it was just because he was getting his lightweight ass kicked up and down the Florida panhandle.
Thanks, AP, for setting me right!
Gov. Charlie Crist said Monday he may quit his GOP primary race and run for the Senate as an independent, his once-promising career threatened by fast-rising conservative opposition. After weeks of insisting he would stay in the Aug. 24 primary, Crist told The Associated Press in a phone interview he intends to be "very, very thoughtful and deliberate" as he makes up his mind. The governor trails conservative rival Marco Rubio by double-digit margins in public polls after holding a huge lead at the outset.
The race is being closely watched nationally as a test of the strength of the tea party movement vs. more moderate Republicans. Rubio rose from obscurity to a favorite among conservatives with strong support from tea party activists. Crist, a moderate leader in one of the nation's largest states, had been considered a potential GOP presidential or vice presidential nominee.
For a long time, liberals have insisted that it is conservatives' social positions that make them extreme and unpalatable. And I include David Frum and Kathleen Parker types as "liberals" there -- I keep hearing this claim that if only we'd jettison the social cons, our party would no longer be racist and icky. The establishment media -- our country's self-appointed arbiters of permissible political thought -- have assured us that it's not fiscal conservatism they find extreme, just that awful Bible-humping social type.
Apparently not, because the AP sets up a distinction between the fiscally-animated Tea Partiers and "more moderate" Republicans.
You'd almost think they despise us -- all of us -- and are simply attempting to create wedges between us or something.
Crist said he intends to listen to Florida residents as he decides his political future. He must make up his mind by the April 30 deadline to get on the ballot...
Yes, he'll be listening to "Florida residents," and certainly not his paid pollsters and political consultants.
He's doing this for you.
As with his best bud Obama -- you ought to be thanking him.
McCain: I Won't Support Crist If He Jumps Independent: "I support Republicans."
He says that now, but if Hayworth starts outpolling him I suspect he might go a little Maverick as regards his promises.

Crist as an Indepedent on the ballot will have no significant impact on the election. In Massachusetts, however, it's a different story.
If we have a three-way race for governor, Deval Patrick will be reelected.

Crist bails and runs as an indy and conservatives will have locked up the idea that "conservatives endorse moderates, but moderates never endorse conservatives" in this party.
He bails and your "elect moderates who can win" mantra is dead. It's complete bullshit that every "moderate" (lately, Dede and Crist) either support the democrat in the end, or seemingly attempt to get that democrat elected.
I concur. I remember in 2004 Pat Toomey was running against specter in the primaries and almost beat him, i think he was within 30 thousand votes. Anyway, when it looked like Specter might lose all the RNC establishment came out for specter. Bush, Santorum, etc etc. And look what happened.
I don't hate david frum and the others. our ideas on ecomic policies are similar, but i am sick of being told conservatives have to buck up and back the moderate for the good of the party, but they NEVER say the same when a conservative is the candidate.
This staterd in 1964 with Barry Goldwater when the Rockafeller republicans abandoned ship and gave LBJ a landslide victory that resulted in the Great Society and escalation without purpose in Vietnam.

If he runs as an independent, he's not only going to get flogged like a rented mule, but his political career will be over. (No one loves a traitor, Charlie, not even the people who paid him.)

What's happening here is Hoffman is threatening to spoil the race if another, apparently perfectly acceptable conservative wins the Republican primary.

You could be right. And Hoffman himself has been silent; this could be a case of the Conservative Party driving this forward and telling their favored candidate to hush up and watch. But if this story is correctly characterizing the state CP chair as having no substantive problem with Doheny as a conservative candidate -- and with the Republican nominee to be decided in a primary rather than by appointment, as was the case with Scozzafava -- the rationale that existed for Hoffman's third-party candidacy during the special election disappears.
Of course the Conservative Party is totally independent of the GOP and can do whatever it wants, but I thought the main rationale for its existence was to put up alternative candidates when the GOP nominee was unacceptably liberal -- otherwise they routinely endorse the Republican candidate in the general election. But if they start cutting the legs out from under conservative Republican nominees, then they're no better than any other spoiler third party that ensures Democrats get elected. I'd hate for this seat to be lost to Bill Owens for a generation just to satisfy some leftover snit-fit over who "earned" what.

The Tea Party isn't supposed to field a third-party candidate, because see then that would result in a Democrat victory.
But if any of the Republicans feels like maybe they aren't going to keep their precious seat, well then it's all fine and good for them to eviscerate the Republican Party and run as an independent third-party candidate.
Now, I get it.
It's really more about Repulicrats (i.e., Democrats who have infiltrated the Republican Party) getting to keep their seats even if it means the death of the Republican Party than it really is about keeping to a two-party system.
The next time a Tea Party candidate decides to run as a third-party candidate in the two way race, I don't want to hear a lot of Republican Party fucking moralizing about how this only ensures the election of the Democrat.
Charlie Crist is proving that the Republican establishment doesn't give a rat's fucking ass about ensuring the long-term viability of the Republican Party. They'll gladly run as third-party candidates if that's the only way they think they can keep their sinecures.

Chuck says there's precedence, and there may well be, but here you see a party basically pruning itself. Going around and saying, "Well we really don't like Arlen Specter. You go find something else to do. Go be a Democrat." We see this with Charlie Crist perhaps being given the boot. Bob Bennett, a real conservative, getting perhaps the boot out in Utah at some point in this process this year. And then of course John McCain who was the Republican nominee for president last time around. All being treated like, well, you know, like tissue rejection, like "You don't belong here."
So, Matthews just did us a really nice favor. He's making a list of all the people MSNBC would rather not see "purged" from the Republican Party.

Apparently not, because the AP sets up a distinction between the fiscally-animated Tea Partiers and "more moderate" Republicans.
The AP prescribes to the Charles Johnson view of Tea Partiers. Where in reality that are really about fiscal conservatism being the main platform and focus and are anti-big government, they view them as being nothing but racist bible thumpers. Its the view that always threw me before the bikerider went off the deep end because of his anti-religion views he should have been all over in full support of the Tea Parties. Though I'm sure the reality is that someone he deemed a racist supported the Tea Parties so they became default Nazis, just like everything else.
McCain: I Won't Support Crist If He Jumps Independent: "I Support Republicans"

Parties only seem to matter to certain members of the Republican leadership when they're the one's getting the party cash and the green light.
Otherwise, they'll run as Independents or even Democrats. Doesn't matter. If need be, they'll join the Democrat Party like Arlen Spectre did.
If you care about the long-term future of the Republican Party then we have to go through the process of identifying those people, like Charlie Crist, who put their personal ambitions above the party, and we need to cut those fucking assholes off at the knees to send a message to everybody else who would try the same maneuver.
If you work with Charlie Crist, you're signing your own death warrant as far as continued employment in Republican political circles goes.
Don't. Work. With. Charlie. Crist.

The problem with making too big a tent is you no longer stand for anything. For a party to be anything other than a faction you need to stand for something.
The voters are relatively fiscally conservative, and yet the Republicans got creamed in 2006 and 2008. Why? Because they don't own the issue anymore. We had Republican majorities in Congress and a Republican president and we still ended up with the biggest expansion of domestic spending in history.
To hell with that. I don't expect politicians to vote my way on every single bill, but I don't think it's too much to ask that you don't sell my descendants into debt slavery. And I rather see people like Specter and Crist change parties than give Democrats another opportunity to say "well, sure, we increased the size of government, but so did the Republicans when they were in charge, so what's the point of voting for them?"

He will lose, Rubio will win.
Crist's wife beard will file for divorce within 30 days.

The main reason he hasn't already announced an independent run is because he knows most of his campaign staff AND most of his gubernatorial staff will quit the instant it happens. And as Rich Lowry rightly noted, his poll numbers will only go down from the roughly three-way tie with him leading within the margin of error where they are now. Jeb Bush will step of retirement--unlike his brother, he's still very popular down here--and not merely endorse Rubio, but do everything he can to annihilate Crist.
If Jeff Kottkamp has any sense (and I worked for him, so I know he did at some point), wants a chance in his AG race and a political future, he'll resign as Lt. Governor the moment Crist announces an indy run, and endorse Rubio. I give him credit for essentially staying neutral up until now: he's no RINO, and I suspect hasn't backed Rubio out of loyalty to Crist for giving him his job. But ditch the party and that's out the window.

Parties matter.

"Parties matter a lot less than votes on bills."
Bullshit. The House is majoritarian, unlike the Senate. Party control of the House determines the Speakership. Who the Speaker is determines the composition of the Rules Committee. And it the Rules Committee, as the Speaker's agenda-setting mechanism, that really runs the House.
Party control in the House determines not just what the votes are on bills, but, more importantly, which bills ever come to the floor for a vote, and what amendments are in order on those bills. That is why, in the House (and not in the Senate), the parties DO matter more than votes on individual bills.

123 So, is Cornyn feeling like a tool now?
No, but it IS after hours in Florida, so Gov Crist probably has a hankerin' for one right about now....

Look at Ed Cox, who runs the NY State GOP. Even Rudy wasn't good enough for him. He actually started a pissing match with him, and Rudy got pissed and dropped off the radar. Cox is backing a Democrat who recently switched to Republican, Steve Levy, to run against Kirsten Gilibrand. Last year, Cox backed a Republican who switched to Democrat during the election. So, yes, the party is fucked in NY state. If NJ can do it, we should be able to get a real Republican elected.
Part of it has to do with this:
Doheny, in addition to picking up the early endorsements, made a good case last week that he has the resources to outlast Hoffman. Doheny reported to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday that he raised more than $363,000 in the first quarter ending April 1, leaving him with more than $813,000 in his campaign account.
There must be a decent lesbian bondage strip club around those parts. Also, do they deliberately yellow Hoffman's teeth in photographs? They're not so bad when I've seen him on television.
