Rangel: "Nothing is Going to Be Changed"
— Gabriel Malor And he says he won't agree to a promise now for action later.
Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak said yesterday at a townhall in his home state, "I'm more optimistic than I was a week ago" that a deal could be reached to pass a health care bill that bans public funding of abortion. Some speculated that this meant Stupak was ready to cave. "Obviously they donÂ’t know me," Stupak said in an interview this afternoon with THE WEEKLY STANDARD. "If I didnÂ’t" cave in November, "why would I do it now after all the crap IÂ’ve been through?"[...]
Stupak affirmed that he will not settle for an agreement to pass the bill now and fix the bill's problems on abortion later: "If they say 'weÂ’ll give you a letter saying we'll take care of this later,' thatÂ’s not acceptable because later never comes."
Stupak highlighted other problems with the bill: The president's proposal has not been translated into legislative language and it still leaves some special deals in place. "If you look at the PresidentÂ’s proposal," Stupak said, "it says that the Cornhusker agreement is out, but the Louisiana Purchase is in."
Feel the Nomentum, Bart!
UPDATE: And there's this little gem buried in a Daily Caller report:
Rangel, in an interview after the Democratic caucus meeting, said the abortion issue “didn’t come up.”“Nothing’s going to be changed,” Rangel said. “There’s no room to change it. Not now.”
Pelosi, a California Democrat, continued to send the message that abortion should not be such a prominent issue in the haggling over getting health care reform passed.
“We’re going to have a bill. It’s about health care,” she said.
Translation: there will be no deal.

Pelosi may be asking the White-House to ut-upshay on the deadlines, but the fact remains, she's still working against the clock.
Perhaps everyone is waiting to see what these proposed fixes look like, but its highly unlikely that they're going to break new ground or convince anyone on the fence.
With it becoming increasingly obvious that she isn't going to be Speaker anymore come November, her power is waning.

This has been out there but not played up that much due to the fact that it only approximates what Charles Krauthammer (that guy's been a little squishy lately, imo. But I digress) calls "social" vs socialist healthcare - what social healthcare will eventually become due to the mind numbing effects of socialism on a person's interest in experiencing actually being alive.

Stupak is a distraction. He won't be needed after other No votes flip. There is plenty of stimulus money available for Pelosi's "lobbying" efforts and everyone has a price. I can vouch for that.

In practice its probably over now.
The only question is when Pelosi and Obama are going to admit it.
"Never" is a reasonable possibility, though unless they cram in a vote, I think they're probably going to have to issue some sort of deliberately ambiguous statement conceding defeat after the Easter break.
They won't explicitly admit its over, but they'll start to say things like "healthcare reform is still being worked on, but at the moment other legislative efforts are taking priority".
The Dems just aren't going to want this issue still hanging over their heads coming into the fall elections, and after them they won't have a snowballs chance in hell of passing anything anyway.

Pelosi is far too radioactive to twist arms for votes. She's a ticking timebomb in close House races. Incumbents cannot attach themselves to her. If they do they lose.
I doubt Pelosi knows this. Yesterday her statement to the National Coalition of Counties is yet another campaign ad. She's cutting campaign ads for the NRCC and every single challenger in the country.
"We have to pass this bill to find out what's in it."
That is comedy gold.

Senator Reid has created the impossible for Pelosi. He's overplayed his hand and now the bill is stuck. Yes votes on Pelosicare are now No votes on Reidcare.
I could be wrong, but I think the chances of the House passing the Senate bill are about as likely as Rahm resigning before November.

Don't worry. Pelosi has two choices here:
a. Admit that with a massive House majority and a Senate supermajority, on her personal signature issue, the wet dream of every Liberal for the last 30 years, with Mr. Nobel-winning Hope-n-Change behind her, after expending all of her political capital, she *still* couldn't get it done, or
b. Act like passage is inevitable and keep kicking that dead horse.
She's picking "b".
Again, if she thought she had the votes to pass this, the Senate bill would already be law.
Also, Pelosi, et al, have been working on this for nearly a year already. All the arms that can be twisted have probably ALREADY been twisted. So far as I know so far there have been no public defections from the "no" camp to the "yes" camp, and there is absolutely nothing to suggest that either her or the President's rhetoric has convinced anyone to change their minds.
Again, her political capital is drying up and time is NOT on her side here. The longer this drags on, the less likely it is to pass.
On Stupak, he may have assembled a coalition of 12 "no" votes on the abortion issue, but for at least some of them, that might just be cover to flip their votes anyway. So even stipulating that the abortion issue gets fixed (which it probably won't), that still may represent a net loss of votes here.
Remember, Pelosi's margin right now is either zero, or less than zero.

I don't think she has the votes, never had the votes, won't ever get the votes -- she's the walking dead and the rest are soon to be, unless they start selling each other out. Expended their political capital too much, too soon, and too quickly.
At least that's my cautiously optimistic take on this. Better add "crucify the infernal thing and then stone it to death at the gates of the city" to the list of ways the healthcare bill must be offed; this thing seems to have more lives than a black cat.

"...There's over 8 months until elections...."
But there isn't 8 months until the elections. Texas has already had it's primary, and there are a ton of other states with primaries in the next couple of months. I take your point that Crazy Nancy and Presnint Milli Vanilli could, if they wanted, keep talking about this right up until election day (and beyond, if they wanted), but the players who want to get elected, or more importantly, re-elected, have to know that they have to get this Healthcare Reform Debacle behind them one way or the other, so they can get about to their real business--keeping their jobs. And, given that the knucklehead D's failed to do the really smart thing last fall--let this thing die then--they have to do this now.

In order for it to be forgotton before the elections they would have had to get it done before the fall of last year. Even with the help of the lying MSM the public will not forget by this Nov.
In short, it is too late for the Dems. The big question is will the Repubs be able to benefit by it or will they continue to roll over and ask for another.

If helps any, here is the congressional schedule:
Recesses: March 29 - April 11; May 31 - June 6; July 5 - July 11; August 9 - September 12
Congress takes lots of holidays. I'm beginning to see that as a good thing.
The scheduled date for the adjournment of the House is October 8.
My take is that if this thing can be held off until August 9, it's pretty much over. I don't think anybody in the House will want to campaign for Obamacare just before reelection. I hope that this makes it easier to put up with than an eight month grind until November 2.

68 Look at it this way: if healthscam gets defeated, then crap n' tax and amnesty will be easier battles...and with the way our precedent is getting wee wee'd (if he doesn't get his way he's going to punish the American people by not doing a damn thing as far as the economy or national security is concerned) they could be dead before they start.
There are consequences to actions -- if P-lousy and the precedential kid have decided to throw a temper tantrum over healthscam (that's certainly the way it's beginning to appear); they could end up destroying their party as well as themselves (hopefully the country can be saved from going down with them). It does however perhaps provide the opportunity down the road to rid this country of the traitors within its boundaries, or at least one can hope.

Again, time is working against the Democrats to pass this, not for them. The climate to pass this isn't going to improve over the next few months, let alone going into election season.
Their best chance is to try to ram this thing through right after the "Presidential" fix-draft comes out, and that means in the next few weeks. If they can't get it done before the coming April/Easter recess, there is virtually no way they'll be able to get it done after that break is done.
Realistically, Pelosi probably is NEVER going to have the votes necessary to pass this in the bag. I think rather than gamble on a vote that is likely to fail and embarrass her, Pelosi will just leave this issue on the backburner until her time is up.
So (like cap and trade) there may not be real "closure" on this until after the elections, even though the political reality is that the Dems probably only have a few more weeks to actually pass it.
#70 "Cap and trade" is effectively DOA in the Senate already. The reason there hasn't been a Senate vote on it is because it wouldn't pass, and that was even with the now-gone Dem supermajority.
I suppose Amnesty is a possibility, in the sense that the Obama adminstration hasn't tried to tackle immigration reform yet. Still, I'm not that worried about it. With something like 70% of the public against it, amnesty itself is *highly* unpopular, even more so than gov't takeover of healthcare. With such a poisonous feature, its questionable that a comprehensive immigration reform package could muster a winning coalition including amnesty.

Crap & Tax, Scene I is dead. Scene II was being rewritten two months ago, and looked like it had better chances.
Fear not. Linseed Gwaham, with his mentor John McLame in the shadows, started on Scene II about three months ago. It's got enough drillin' and old utility exemptions to pull in enough RINOs.
It's scarier than before, having any chance of passing.
